19. Building New Villages (I)

Warren the Ranger wakes up from his cold bed.

The room was pitch black, and the fire in the pit seemed to have been extinguished, with only a few embers emitting a dark red glow. A clammy mist crept in through the crack in the door, making Warren feel a little uncomfortable.

Warren sat up and lifted the cover, a somewhat worn piece of felt, the edges of which had become tattered due to age, and looked even more damp and cold after absorbing enough moisture from the mist. The Ranger hesitated, the appeal of the bed was rapidly diminishing to him.

There was an even, small breathing sound not far away, and the female thief Martha was sleeping soundly wrapped in a blanket, which was made of a whole bobcat skin, and although it smelled a little fishy, it was much warmer than felt.

Warren got up lightly, walked to the firepit, put a few pieces of chopped wood in it, and stabbed it a few times with the tongs. The embers ignited the firewood, and the bright flames flickered, reflecting Warren's face red.

The beating light in the fire pit drove away the clammy and cold feeling, and the roasted Warren body was warm. He sat silently by the fire, thinking about his thoughts with a somewhat dazed expression, until the first rays of morning light came in through the cracks in the windows of the hut.

There was some commotion outside the door, and the ranger stood up and walked to the door, and through the gap in the door panel, he could see that in the cold morning light, the doors of the wooden houses were opened, and many villagers stretched their waists and walked out of them.

After a night's rest, the men looked refreshed. Yesterday Lord Levi not only brought back a team of soldiers who looked very elite, but also brought back a lot of food. The villagers don't know the exact amount of food, but it is likely to be quite a lot, and the ration restrictions, which had been in place since at least a few months ago, have been lifted since last night.

Although it was just hard black bread and hot water, the rare feeling of satiety filled the villagers with gratitude for the new leader of the camp. Especially now in the open field behind the camp, steaming oatmeal porridge is tumbling in the cauldron, spreading the rich aroma in all directions, which makes everyone feel even more excited.

At least six months, when the shadow of the plague loomed over the territory, the farmers had to abandon their unripe crops and take refuge in walled villages. I watched most of the year's hard work drown in the thick fog that followed the demons.

This dense fog not only blocks out the sun and creates a more demonic environment, but also changes the flora and fauna, and most of the crops are mildly poisonous, although not fatal, but eating this corrupted food still causes diarrhea and low-grade fever, and it is obvious that it can no longer be used as a source of primary food.

The taste of oatmeal porridge was very sweet, without the faint smell of sulfur like rotten grain, and each villager could not help but smile with satisfaction on his face as he held a steaming wooden bowl in his hand.

The happiness that people in the midst of the calamity want is very simple, to be able to eat, to have a safe place to live, these are enough.

For breakfast, in addition to a large bowl of thick and thick oatmeal, brown bread is still served in large quantities. The reason for this was not only because of the kindness of Levi, the leader of the camp, but also because the villagers had to do a lot of work today, and they simply could not bear it without adequate nutrition.

The heart of the castle can produce supplies that can solve the food crisis, and the next crisis for the refugee camps is security. The last time the demon easily broke through the protection of the wooden wall, in addition to the weakness of the camp guards at the critical moment, another important reason is that although the refugee camp has built protective facilities such as watchtowers and wooden walls, the planning is not reasonable, and it is quite vulnerable to the demon's attack.

Levi's education from the Knights of Ston didn't include how to design village defenses. On the one hand, Stonknight himself did not have a territory, so he did not get involved in this issue, and on the other hand, Levi had only been with Stone Knight for a short time, and although Stonn Knight wanted to train him to become a knight, he was far from considering this problem.

However, after the lights in the wooden house were turned on overnight, Levi, whose eyes were red, took out a map of the village construction plan, which shocked everyone, including Sir Grace.

The role of each building in the camp is marked in great detail on this drawing, in which all the houses used as ordinary villagers are neatly planned in the center of the camp, the houses near the wooden walls are all used as the shelters of the camp guards, and the roof is covered with a tower with a wooden parapet wall that can be used as a watchtower. The camp guards, who lived in the houses below, could quickly ascend the tower from the inside via the stairs after being alerted, and strike with their bows and arrows at any enemy who tried to approach the camp.

In addition, the square as a meeting place for the villagers, the cellar as a grain storehouse, the water storage tank as a fire prevention measure, the blacksmith shop, the kitchen, the pig farm, the vegetable garden, and even a small open-air market are all planned on the drawings. The whole drawing was so detailed that Sir Grace commented in surprise that he even thought he was seeing the plans of a knight's castle.

In addition, the wooden wall, which is the main protective facility of the camp, is the top priority in the renovation work. The logs that had been sharp and piercing into the sky were cut off the tops and replaced with small platforms with wooden shields more than half a meter high that were fixed to the top of the wooden walls every few meters. There are fist-sized rocks stacked on the platform, and a long ladder is placed underneath the platform, allowing the guardians to climb to the top as fast as they can, and then rain down the stones.

This defense was obviously much stronger than the original wooden wall, and although the little demon was agile and tough, if he was hit by a stone thrown from the high wooden wall, his head would still bleed. The wooden shield on top of the platform allows the guardians to attack without having to worry about their safety at all times.

However, for such a large project, it is obvious that the villagers need to work hard for a long time before they can roughly make a prototype.

There was no shortage of labour in the camp, but there was a great shortage of skilled workers such as carpenters and blacksmiths, and the only one who could be called a blacksmith was the old one-eyed Dui who could barely hold a hammer, and there were slightly more people who knew the carpenter's trade, but the three men with the title of carpenter were in fact only apprentices who had just graduated from school.

Levi's drawings required a large number of blacksmiths and carpenters to complete, and when Sir Grace pointed this out, the young knight's squire smiled mysteriously, and then pointed to the pikemen beside him and said, "Sir Grace, these people are qualified blacksmiths and carpenters, and everything needed on this drawing can be made by them." What we need to do is to organize the villagers to do other work, after all, there are many places that need labor for such a large camp construction. ”

"Mr. Levi, you mean, they are both qualified blacksmiths, carpenters, and very good warriors, how is that possible?" Sir Grace shook his head in disbelief. However, at Levi's command, when one of the pikemen took off his equipment and picked up the hammer of Daddy Doi the One-Eyed, Sir Grace's gaze changed from surprise to horror.

The pikeman quickly repaired a longsword on the iron furnace, and his movements were even more proficient than that of Daddy Doo. Daddy Doy examined the sword with a professional eye, and then announced that the pikeman was definitely a blacksmith with a professional blacksmith's craft.

The carpenter's part, which didn't even need to be examined by the three carpenter's apprentices, was skillfully working on a double saw, and in three minutes a whole log was broken into a pile of planks, and the smooth surface didn't even need to be reworked and polished.

"Mr. Levi, can you tell me how your family has such rare talents?" Sir Grace couldn't help but sigh, he didn't really ask Levi to answer the inexplicable question, but was a little incredulous.

Levi coughed lightly, smiled apologetically at Sir Grace, then drew a circle on the drawing and said, "All right, guys, now we'll assign the task." Sir Grace, you are a well-known demon hunter with the strongest long-range striking ability, so I will hand over the command of the archer squad to you, and the early warning task of the camp will be entrusted to you. ”

"No problem, leave it to me. Sir Grace, still a little shocked, agreed.

"Warren, Martha, you are all old people in the camp, so you are more familiar with the people here, the logging team is handed over to Warren, a ranger who is familiar with the forest, and you are responsible for other odd jobs in the camp, Martha. After the construction of this new village is completed, I will officially take in the two of you as my followers. ”

"Yes, Lord Levi!" Warren and Martha looked at each other, both feeling a wave of excitement.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is our new village, and we must do our best to build this village to perfection. Let it be a place for us to live in the midst of the calamity!, please help me!" Levi finally announced loudly with a fist waving and his eyes shining.

"I will do my best!" everyone present responded loudly, and the atmosphere became intense.
