Chapter 44: The End is Near
Regel and Matthew are members of Marlowe's Shadow Force, an organization composed mostly of orphans. In Marlo's coup d'Γ©tat ten years ago, Regel and Matthew lost their parents. They were only eight years old at the time, and after the unrest ended, they were sent to an orphanage in Maro City.
If it had been the reign of Nero, the previous king of Maro, they would never have been adopted by an orphanage so easily. At that time, most of the orphans of the Maro Empire would be accepted by black-hearted merchants, either sold as slaves to the mines, or prostitutes, who became perverted nobles because of their appearance.
And a very small number of lucky orphans will be recruited by some organizations in the dark and trained to become the dead soldiers needed by the organization. Although the endings are mostly tragic, they are countless times luckier than those who die in the mines quickly, or who are toyed with to death.
Nero's son, Caesar, was a different king from his father, young and charismatic, who worked hard to build the country into a great power. In his second year on the throne, he discovered that there were a large number of orphans in the country who had been born of his father's tyrannical incompetence.
Caesar then passed a law that all the orphans would be used to form an army, and all the funds for their support would be paid for by the state. Trained to be Caesar's eyes in the dark, to eavesdrop on the ears of other nations' secrets, and to assassinate traitors and enemies. This unit, which Caesar himself named Shadow, secretly killed many [***] officials who were ostensibly immobile during Caesar's internal purge.
They operated in Carthage, gathering Carthaginian military and economic power and rebelling against important officials. When the royal capital was besieged, it provoked the contradictions of the southern nobles of Carthage, making them unable to support the royal capital. As an organization in the dark, they have grown into a presence that warns all kingdoms in just ten years.
At the age of fifteen, Reegle and Matthew joined the Shadows after leaving the orphanage and received all the training they needed. And graduating with honors, Matthew and Regel officially began to act as shadows, beginning to move and be in the dark. The two who had known each other in the orphanage were assigned to a team after graduating from the training center.
After the outbreak of the direct war between Carthage and Maro, both of them died in an assassination attempt due to their superior performance, as well as the captain and vice-captain of the team. He was promoted to captain and vice-captain, and a month later led the team into Elamite to pursue the fleeing Carthaginian royal family, and his whereabouts have not been known ever since.
"Have you finished meeting the city lord?" Matthew, who was staying in the office, watched Regel walk in and asked, "What does the city lord say? If he does it, then everything will be easy, let's just make up some suitable reasons, and find a few scapegoats and everything will be fine." β
"Then your wish will be frustrated. Regel loosened his neckline a little, sat back in his seat, and said, "The city lord doesn't know anything about this matter, because it involves leaks. Even if we catch the prisoner, we still have to check for the unstable blacksmith. And when we do that job, we have to start our training. β
"Ah, I don't know what else we have to train. Matthew leaned on the table a little weakly and said, "We are good hands, except for the mission that failed because the dead captain was stupid, we have no experience of failure at all!"
"If you don't fail, how can you be here? Legel tossed a weapon that looked like a dagger to Matthew and said, "This is a special weapon of our Party Guard, and it is said that there is a uniform uniform, but it seems that it has not been made yet." Because I've been checking this thing recently, the city lord sent us the weapon first. β
"All black, knife?" Matthew pulled out the weapon, which was only half the length of an ordinary long sword, looked at the straight and slender blade and asked strangely, "What is this? If it is a short sword, it has only one blade, and the tip is obviously the arc of the knife." Although the all-black design is very good, it will not be noticed because of the reflection. β
"Well, that's what the weapon looks like. "I didn't ask what it was called, it was similar to a knife, I tried it when I got it, and it's a very good thing." The speed of the attack is very fast, which is suitable for those of us who only use. β
"By the way, the guy named Glock just now sent something, it seems to be some clues about the case. Matthew put away his weapon and hung it on his waist, handed a document to Regel and said, "Well, because I read it in vain anyway, I didn't read the content." β
"The werewolf was found dead. Regel turned a few pages to the file and said, "The goblins who were cleaning the sewers, while cleaning the blocked water outlets, found the werewolf's corpse. There's a patrol there, and they've all been smashed. And that Glock is really capable, the tavern where the last of the slain Capitol spies haunted has also been found. β
"Are you going to that tavern later?" Matthew asked, "If it were me, I wouldn't have gone back to that tavern after I heard that the person who bought the information had been killed, and the tavern wasn't tasty at all!"
"Don't go there yet. Regel looked at the still bright sky outside and said, "Let's go and see the werewolves first, maybe something is different." The things in the document are too vague, so you still have to confirm it with your eyes. β
The place where the bodies were stacked was on the outskirts of Thunder Bluff, a very remote place. At the beginning, Mo Yan didn't think about the stacking of corpses, after all, it was good for corpses to be eaten by monsters, and there was no need to spend effort to bury them. The Salts in the city have their own family cemeteries in their original villages, so the dead will be transported back there for burial, and they will not have anything to do with Thunder Bluff.
But this murder was killed by a spy in the name of the messenger of the council city, so these corpses still need to be stacked somewhere before they are returned to the council city for some simple repair work. So a shady house near the city wall was used as a storage place for corpses.
"Bastards, don't steal corpses!" Regel heard a noise coming from the house, pushed open the door and walked in, seeing a group of goblins piecing together corpses. and a gray dwarf with a wooden stick smoking a goblin with blood on the corner of his mouth.
"Oh, it's you. The gray dwarf saw someone coming in, squinted at Regel and Matthew, and said, "You have come too quickly, the corpses of those werewolves have just been delivered at noon, and they have not been completely repaired, they have been cut to pieces." And from time to time, there are working goblins stealing food, which is really troublesome. β
"Do you know what kind of weapon caused it?" Regger looked at the minced meat piled up on the long tables, and asked the dwarf in charge of repairing, "Since you've been doing this in the dungeon before, you must already be quite experienced, right? What kind of weapon could cause such damage?" β
"Not a sword, not a knife, not a blunt weapon. The dwarf picked up the flask on the table and took a sip and said, "And there are also a lot of bite marks on the bodies of these werewolves, and some of the traces of weapons have been destroyed, so I can only roughly deduce that it is a long-handled weapon." β
"Is it a long-handled weapon? Is it a long-handled scythe?" said Matthew, looking at the slash marks on the pieces of minced flesh, "If that's the case, it's possible to cause such a wound." β
"There was a werewolf who had been stripped of his hair. The dwarf pointed to a piece of a werewolf and said, "The hair of those werewolves at the scene must be this guy's." Hehe...... It seems that when he was alive, he was plucked out of his whole body. It hurts just to think about it!"
"Such a style...... Matthew, do you remember anything. Regel seemed to remember something and asked, "About a certain shadow madwoman." β
"Hey...... It's not funny at all. Matthew, who was asked, said with a rare nervousness: "She's not going to be in Elam! And she's not the only one who wields a scythe!"
"Well, I'm just talking about it. Regger looked at the nervous Matthew and said with a smile: "This won't be what she did, if she was doing this, she would be targeted on the first day she came to the city." The swaggering way of action is not at all like a person in the dark. β
"Whew......," Matthew said with a sigh of relief, "Don't scare me with this kind of thing in the future! I don't want to marry a woman like that......"
"Let's go. Regel shrugged his shoulders and walked out, "I'm paying a visit to the guy who sells the information, and we'll be done." When the time comes to arrest, it is estimated that there will be chaos in the city for a while. β
"You already have a clue about the prisoner?" asked Matthew, following him.
"Of course. Regger smiled and said, "The guy with the scythe and the obvious bite marks...... This is a demon. A guy who went berserk after eating a monster. β
