Chapter 16 The Buddha Relics of Yunju Temple
Li Ruhui and Zong Zhenlei came to Ma Zhen's house, and the chubby Ma Zhen's mother took the two of them with a smile.
Li Ruhui entered the door and smelled the aroma of coffee in the house, put down the fruit in her hand and asked Ma Zhen's mother for coffee, she knew that they must have freshly brewed coffee at this time, because the coffee made by Ma Zhen's mother was particularly fragrant.
Ma Zhen's mother brought them into the study and brought them coffee with a smile. Ma Zhen's mother first asked about their situation and the current situation of several classmates she was familiar with, and then told Ma Zhen about the embarrassment she encountered in Shanghai and the bad things that she didn't have a boyfriend so far. Li Ruhui and Zong Zhenlei laughed at each other, just like reuniting with an old friend of the same age.
After chatting for a while, Ma Zhen's mother laughed at herself that she was now a straw bale, and she urgently needed a night's sleep at noon, so that they could read freely, and disappeared into the door to the bedroom after speaking.
Ma Zhen's family is a Catholic family, Li Ruhui knows that Ma Zhen's parents are Catholic, her home is not far from Naoma Catholic Church, and her family often goes there for Mass; When Li Ruhui was in high school, she also went to that church with Ma Zhen to experience the atmosphere of pursuing spiritual growth in a quiet state of mind.
Li Ruhui carefully closed the door of the study, and when she turned around, she saw Zong Zhenlei standing in front of the glass door of the bookcase, so she grabbed it and wanted to open the cabinet door, but she couldn't open it; Zong Zhenlei smiled, stepped forward and rotated the door handle, opened the bookcase, and familiarly took out the Japanese book "Research on Fangshan Yunju Temple" published in 1935.
Zong Zhenlei explained: "I borrowed the Chinese translation of this book from the school library, and I had some doubts about the problems in the book, and I wanted to come to Ma Zhen's house to see the original version for a long time; The last time I saw this book here, I was in high school, and although I didn't know Japanese at the time, I always remember having this book in my collection. ”
Li Ruhui also picked a book, and when she looked back, she quickly read the book in his hand, held the book in her hand, looked out the window and was stunned, so she touched him with her own book and said, "What did you find?" ”
Zong Zhenlei looked back: "I'm thinking about Tongyun saying that his master participated in the demolition of the south tower of Yunju Temple. This book introduces the situation of Yunju Temple, and introduces the north tower of Yunju Temple in detail, but in comparison, it introduces very little to the south tower, only two photos and a small number of texts speculating on the age of the tower. When I read the Chinese version of this book at school, I felt that the Chinese version introduced Nanta less, and I always thought that there was an omission, but now compared with the original book, it seems that the Chinese version is correct. I'm wondering, is there anything to be done between this book and Tongyun's master's demolition of the South Tower? ”
Li Ruhui listened, as if she felt halfway through, but she didn't understand: "Can you tell me more about the South Tower?" ”
Zong Zhenlei scratched his head and said, "Okay, I'll be more detailed, you can also help me sort out my thoughts while listening." Yunju Temple is a thousand-year-old Buddhist temple, and there are two towers in the temple, one south and one north; After several Japanese scholars visited the area, they published "A Study of Fangshan Yunju Temple" in March 1935. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the temple was surrounded by the Pingxi anti-Japanese guerrillas in the winter of 1938, the Japanese bombed the Yunju Temple, and the military aircraft blew the Yunju Temple beyond recognition, but the south tower was still there; In 1942, under the pretext of repairing fortifications, the Japanese army led people to dig the South Tower; According to the information, they found several Buddha relics in the stone letter under the pedestal of the south tower, and Tongyun's master participated in this operation. ”
Li Ruhui arranged the time of each event: "The Lugou Bridge Incident was on July 7, 1937, after the Japanese army invaded North China, there was the destruction of Yunju Temple, this book was published in 1935, indicating that there was no Lugou Bridge Incident when the book was published, and the south tower was still there when the author inspected Yunju Temple. ”
Zong Zhenlei nodded yes, and then said: "This book introduces the Leiyin Cave, which contains three Buddha relics, and the relevant accounts of the Ming Dynasty monk Hanshan. However, when the Japanese army demolished the South Tower, the Leiyin Cave was not damaged. So I was thinking, judging from the incident of their excavation of the South Pagoda, the master of Tongyun, as a participant, must have studied the Chinese book on the collection of Buddha treasures before the excavation, and it should also include this book; This book introduces the North Pagoda a lot, the Leiyin Cave in detail, but the South Pagoda very little, and it is strange that when the Japanese are looking for Buddha relics, why would they dig up the South Pagoda instead of digging the North Pagoda or the Leiyin Cave? ”
Li Ruhui said casually: "If you say something, you don't necessarily have it, but if you don't say it, it seems to have it?" ”
Zong Zhenlei listened, looked at Li Ruhui, as if he had suddenly opened his mind, and excitedly patted the book and said: "Yes, Tongyun's master may have this kind of idea!" ”
Li Ruhui made a "shhhhh He pushed the coffee cup inward again, and said to Zong Zhenlei, who was still excited: "Don't be excited, first tell me why Buddhism values relics so much?" That's what I've always wanted to know. ”
Zong Zhenlei closed the book, was silent for a while, and said, "Okay." There is a saying in Buddhism that relics are the condensation of merit, compassion and wisdom of high monks during their lifetimes, and as for Buddha relics, they are naturally felt by Buddha Shakyamuni because of the merits of precepts and wisdom during his lifetime. The Great Nirvana Sutra says: 'If you see the relics of the Buddha, you are seeing the Buddha'. This Buddha refers to the true body of Shakyamuni Buddha or the symbol of the Dharma.
Li Ruhui heard this statement for the first time: "What do the Buddha's relics represent? ”
Zong Zhenlei nodded and said, "Yes, it represents the true body of the Buddha or the Dharma." Note that Buddhism is not a Buddhist law, but refers to the Buddha's words and teachings that truthfully proclaimed the truth of life in the universe that he realized, which is immeasurable wisdom and enlightenment. ”
Li Ruhui then asked: "You just talked about relics, but is there only one kind of Buddha's relics?" In addition, how to distinguish between the Buddha's and the monk's? ”
Zong Zhenlei raised his voice and said: "There is a book in Buddhism "Dharma Garden Zhulin", which has already answered your question, and it says: 'There are three kinds of relics: one is the bone relics, and their color is white; the second is to send relics, and its color is also black; The third is the meat relic, whose color is also red. There are also three kinds of bodhisattvas and arhats, if the Buddha relics are not broken, if the disciple's relics are broken. Therefore, the relics of the Buddha cannot be broken by a hammer, but the relics of a high monk are broken by a hammer; The Buddha relics also have a bright saying, some monks said that the Buddha relics: 'Baoguang Heyi Lianhui, shining day and night, looking at the stars from afar.' It means that the light is as bright as the stars in the night sky. ”
When Li Ruhui heard this, she felt that she could supplement her knowledge of Buddhism, so she said, "Let's talk about matters related to the worship of Buddha relics." ”
"In the Buddhist world, Buddha relics are Buddhist relics that are usually enshrined in stupas. According to the record of the "Treatise on Great Wisdom", it is said: "Offering Buddha relics, and even mustard seeds, its blessings are boundless." This means that if you offer the relics of the Buddha, you will receive immeasurable blessings. ”
"It's enough for me to digest it for a while; Okay, let's change the content, and you can talk about the Buddha relics related to Yunju Temple. ”
"You will ask more and more questions halfway, and I will start with the source of the Buddha relics. It is said that after the Buddha Shakyamuni attained Nirvana, his disciples received 84,000 relics of the Buddha's true body. This relic was originally divided into eight parts, and was built by the eight kings to build a pagoda and offer offerings. In the time of Emperor Ashoka in India, Emperor Ashoka ordered the excavation of the stupa built by the eight kings, rebuilt the new pagoda and sent the Sangha to preach in various places, and some of the Buddha's relics flowed into China. ”
"I know this, we in China have been worshiping Buddha for a long time."
"During the Sui Dynasty, Emperor Wen of Sui Emperor Yang Jian revered the Buddha, and the Indian monks gave him a bag of Buddha relics. Emperor Wen of Sui later issued Buddha relics to the whole country to let the states build pagodas and Tibet, and it is recorded that at that time, the three kingdoms of Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla all asked Emperor Wen of Sui for a Buddha relic. ”
"But there are so many Buddha relics, give one in each place, how many towers will be built!"
"There are also many ones that are hidden together, such as the Buddha relics in Yunju Temple. After the death of Emperor Wen of Sui Emperor Yang Jian, the enthroned Emperor Yang Guang of Sui also respected the Buddha, legend has it that Emperor Yang of Sui learned that he respected the monk Zhikai as a teacher and a wise man, and there was a monk Jingwan who was also out of the teacher, carved a stone scripture in Baidai Mountain in western Beijing, in case the Buddhist scriptures were destroyed and lost, then he gave three Buddha relics to Jingwan to show merit. ”
"Didn't Jingwan hide these three Buddha relics in the tower?"
"After the Buddha relics were in the hands of Jing Wan, the world was in turmoil at that time, and legend has it that Jing Wan was worried that the destruction of the Buddha would cause the temple stupa to be destroyed and the Buddha relics to be robbed, so these three very special Buddha relics were placed in the relatively hidden Yunju Temple Leiyin Cave."
"The experience of these Buddha relics is so tortuous!"
"The more valuable things are, the more twists and turns they have."
"Didn't you say that the Japanese army found a few Buddha relics in the south tower of Yunju Temple? Is it the same as these ones? ”
"It is said that the Buddha relics found are white bone relics, and the book records that the three Buddha relics hidden by Jingwan are red flesh relics, which are the best Buddha treasures, and they are even rarer."
"Yes, Tongyun's master went to Yunju Temple and didn't dig up these three Buddha relics, why? Could he not have known that it was in the Thunder Sound Cave? ”
"Master Tongyun should have known that Yunju Temple had these three relics hidden in it, and he participated in the excavation of the South Tower, perhaps to find these three; However, after excavation, it was found that although the Buddha relics hidden in the tower were not these three, it is estimated that there were doubts about whether there were really Buddha relics hidden in the Leiyin Cave; As you just said, he probably thinks that there is not necessarily something that is said, but it seems that there is something that is not said, and other factors do not make a timely attack on Lei Yin Cave; One of these other factors is that although the book "Research on Fangshan Yunju Temple" recounts the process of Hanshan obtaining enlightenment and hiding the Buddha relics in Leiyin Cave, it also writes a sentence "If the Deqing record is true", this leaves uncertain factors for judging whether the Leiyin Cave still contains Buddha relics; ”
Li Ruhui asked in confusion: "Deqing record?" What is the relationship with Hanshan? ”
Zong Zhenlei smiled and said: "You need to make up the class, Hanshan is the law name, Deqing is his law name, the same person, he is one of the four great monks of the Ming Dynasty." ”
Li Ruhui let out an "oh", ignored his ridicule, and seemed to pay attention to another question: "I think you have played a little more, as if you and Tongyun and his master are following each other, let me ask you, how do you determine that the three relics hidden in Jingwan are the relics of the Buddha?" ”
Zong Zhenlei took out a text stored on his mobile phone and handed it to Li Ruhui to read: "Hanshan recorded in "Zhuozhou Xishi Jingshan Lei Yin Hori Relic" that when the Sui Dynasty monk Jingwan placed these three relics, he inscribed 36 words on the bluestone cover containing the holy relics: 'The twelfth year of the Great Sui Great Cause, the fourth month of the fourth month, Ding Sishuo, the eighth day of Jiazi, placed the Buddha relics in this letter, and wished the abbot to be eternal', which was used as the basis for the inheritance of the three Buddha relics. ”
After reading it, Li Ruhui pondered for a moment and asked, "How do you know that there is a stone letter containing holy relics?" ”
Zong Zhenlei patted the Japanese book in his hand and said: "The Ming Dynasty monk Hanshan recorded it in his article, including this Japanese book, which also wrote this stone letter, but the Chinese translation wrote the inscription on the cover of the stone letter 'April Ding Si Shuo Eight Day Jiazi' as 'April Ding Mao Shuo Eight Day Jiazi', which is why I want to check the Japanese text." ”
Li Ruhui was convinced: "It's okay, it turns out that you can really understand the original Japanese text!" Didn't pull you in for nothing, you're a living dictionary! She thought for a moment and asked, "The difference between '巳' and '卯' in this sentence does you estimate that it has an impact on Tongyun's master's behavior of finding these three Buddha relics?" ”
Zong Zhenlei said: "I think it will affect Tongyun's master's decision to dig the thunder sound cave. This 'Si' first appeared in the enlightenment account of the two high monks of Hanshan and Zibai, and this 'Mao' was first seen in the late Ming Dynasty Liu Tong's "Dijing Jingwulu", he wrote that 'the 12th year of the Great Sui Great Cause Bingzi April Ding Mao Shuo 8th Jiazi placed the Buddha relics in this letter three wishes for the abbot eternal calamity', and later the Qing Dynasty Qianlong "Siku Quanshu" also copied and used; But Liu Tong is not a party to the Buddha Treasure, he has not seen the bluestone cover, and it is estimated that there is a clerical error; In the book "Research on Fangshan Yunju Temple", it is said that Hanshan's account is quoted, but the '巳' in the original text is said to be '卯', which naturally makes people wonder whether this book really quotes Hanshan's account, and uses such an uncertain sentence as 'If the Deqing record is true', if Tongyun's master has studied this book, it will presumably affect the determination to act on the Lei Yin Cave. ”
While the two were talking, Li Ruhui's mobile phone rang; After answering the phone, she said to Zong Zhenlei: "Look, I forgot the time, the professor is waiting for us!" ”
