Chapter 31: The Last Supper
The Germans in the town were doomed to be wiped out when Henry could always take the first step to deal with their sneak attack and force them out for a head-on confrontation.
The captain of the "lieutenant colonel" B Company rushed to the town to join the tank company, received news of German reinforcements and came to Henry again.
"Captain, you can't give full play to the advantage of tanks in the town, you should discuss with Tang where to surround and annihilate this battalion of German troops outside the town, remember to call air support"
"Okay, Lieutenant Colonel," the captain said, and went down to let the soldiers rest and prepare for the evening battle.
"Tonight is my last day on the battlefield, and tomorrow afternoon, after arriving at the Allied logistics and defensive line, I will wait to return to the United States."
Henry stood in the central square of the town, quietly looking up at the sky, and the surrounding house made the sky above him look boxy, like a prisoner in captivity, although he could let off the wind on the playground, it was comparable to being really free from prison.
"Huh? The pair of German cousins" Henry's sight, a woman's head poked out of the swaying window on the second floor, looking at Henry and the American soldiers below.
"Just go take a shower and have a meal"
Henry stretched a big waist and rubbed his face, which was a little blank because he was in a daze.
Henry took out the food in his backpack, prepared dinner for 8 people, took his backpack, and walked from the staircase to the house upstairs.
"Knock knock, open the door, hurry up~" Henry knocked on the door, asking the people inside to open the door quickly.
The door opened from the inside, and a German woman in a red dress opened the door a little helplessly, and then retreated in panic.
"What's your name?"
"Nina"
"Anyone else?" Henry asked, looking at the clothes drying and turning his head.
"Nope! … And another, my cousin, is in the room now. Sensing Henry's sweeping gaze, Nina changed her tone again.
"Prepare a bucket of hot water for me, I want to take a bath, the food here, make it all after dark, you can take one by one, let the person inside come out and help you get it together, the food is ready, boil more water"
"Can it be done?" Henry put all the food on the table and looked at the woman across from him who had said everything without question.
"No problem, sir"
"Let's go"
Henry took off his military uniform and vest full of dust and gunpowder smoke in the main hall, he had just participated in a big battle, and hurried for a day, fortunately Henry's physical fitness was not ordinary, and he did not have the heavy body odor of other white people.
Hearing the footsteps behind him, Henry turned his head to see two German women coming out of the room.
"Hello, what's your name?"
"Emma, Emma Catherine"
"Can you play the piano?"
"Yes, I studied at the Austrian Conservatory, because where the defense line is being built, all the women and children cannot stay anywhere." Emma pinched her fingers and explained anxiously.
"Pachbel's Canon in D major, he's a German composer, you should know how to play it, play it, Nina go boil water."
Henry and Emma walked up to the piano and asked her to sit down and play, while Henry stood with his hands folded and leaned against the wall beside him.
The sound of the piano sounded, not very coherent at first, but later more and more fluid, but Pakhbel's canon was more melancholy than romantic as it was later adapted.
Henry prefers the adapted canon, like lovers chasing each other and accompanying each other.
"Let me come" The battlefield is sad enough, and it doesn't feel right after listening to it for a while.
Henry got Emma up, sat down and began to play the familiar melody that had been arranged in his head.
"Can this song be written?"
"Yes, for a few hours," Emma smiled, looking confident in her profession.
"Then you learn it, play it to me later, I'll take a shower"
"Huh?"
In the future, there is someone around you who can play the piano, and you can lie down and listen to whatever you want.
After Henry took a bath, he changed into clean clothes, and asked them to help wash the dirty clothes, Henry had not experienced this kind of life for several years, and the clothes came to reach out for food and open his mouth to be served.
It was getting darker and darker, there was no sound in the whole town, and all the American troops were outside to ambush the Germans.
Henry did not take them to avoid the bombing, because the German counterattack in the Ardennes was unsuccessful, and most of the German planes dispatched at that time were shot down, and the planes are no longer visible in Germany today.
By 9 o'clock in the evening, there was the sound of planes flying in the sky, and the occasional explosion could be heard.
By 10 o'clock, the roar of tanks began to sound in the town, and the tank company returned.
Looking at the increasingly lively square, presumably the loss this time is not very heavy.
"Don, come up to dinner, bring the rest of the people in the car" Henry shouted as he stood by the window and saw Don jump out of the tank.
"Yes, Lieutenant Colonel"
Everyone on the Fury Tank went upstairs and into the room.
"I've prepared dinner, and hot water, let's go wash up first, don't stand" Henry is here, this group of people don't dare to talk nonsense, funny.
"Yes, Lieutenant Colonel"
When they had finished washing, a group of people sat at the table, while the two women ate at the table next to them.
"Sit down, eat and talk, it's rare to have such a sumptuous dinner"
"Sit down," Don beckoned the others to sit down, and then picked up the knife and fork.
"How does it feel to conduct a joint operation tonight?"
"It's not very good, a total of two tanks were lost, while searching for German tanks, they were attacked by a sneak attack, and when they surrounded and annihilated the Germans at night, one was destroyed by rockets."
"There are undead people in the war, I just went to the 756 Independent Battalion, I lost several vehicles at once, and now only you are left."
"It's good tonight, I'll leave it to you later"
"It's a rare get-together, I wish each of us a return to the United States~, Trini, pour everyone a glass of wine"
Everyone stood up and raised their glasses together.
