Chapter 9: Joining the Guild

Lin Meng stood at the entrance of the large market square, feeling the sun falling on her back, and occasionally curious passers-by glancing at her. She felt slightly uncomfortable, hoping that at least a scarf or something would cover her bare shoulders. Wearing this outfit was a huge test for her compared to the old jeans or loose-fitting, head-covering hoodie she wore all the time. But she had to admit that the robe was comfortable, more comfortable than jeans, because the fabric that reached her ankles was very loose and flowy, churning in the gentle breeze.

"Adventurer's Guild...... The Adventurer's Guild ......" she stood in the middle of the market square, looking around the city, muttering to herself. Stalls and vendors lined up on the road, and for the new day, all of them were busy, with hundreds of adventurers and some "normal" looking people walking around, their excited voices rendering the city incredibly noisy. That's life now. Listening to the voices around her, she felt inexplicably happy, even if she couldn't understand some of what they were saying. It's just that the feeling is so energetic. Just here, surrounded by all this, made her feel inexplicably excited, even if no one spoke to her. After a long period of solitude, she lived again in a way she never realized.

"What are you looking for?" A loud voice behind her asked. Lin Meng was slightly startled, looking at the giant man standing behind a small wooden stall, with baked goods piled up behind him. She stared at him for a second, a little nervous.

"Ahh Belch......! ...... I'm looking for an adventurer's guild? She asked in an uncertain tone.

The giant man leaned over to look at her, looking a little puzzled. But then he straightened up, crossed his huge arms, and laughed happily. "Over there!" As she spoke, her fingers the size of two of her own fingers pointing into the distance. Lin Meng followed the direction he was pointing to see the building nested behind a large sign, which swayed between the two chains on it. The sign clearly and clearly reads 'Adventurers' Guild'.

Lin Meng smiled and thanked the man with some embarrassment. She glanced slightly nervously at the price sign above a small loaf of bread in the stall: '10 Orr'. She winced, waved goodbye to the man, and walked towards the guild. This is understandable. It was just a lowliest mushroom monster. If each hat is worth 3 Orr, then she must kill more than three monsters to be able to afford a loaf of bread. Besides, if she only eats mushroom monsters, she doesn't need bread. Although, eating monsters is a disgusting thing?

When Lin Meng stood in front of the door, he felt nervous. Her heart began to beat faster as she grabbed the hoop handle, and her hands trembled even more. She took a deep breath, then slowly exhaled, opened the door and stepped inside.

Suddenly, as she walked into the slightly darker building, the atmosphere changed. A strong shadow forms here, as if the sun itself cannot fully shine through the hazy yellowing window. The hum of the outside world is then silenced.

It was unusually quiet at the moment. The hustle and bustle of the city was completely cut off, and only the haunting voices that now appeared around her surrounded her, and the voice sounded like the song of a grieving woman, high-pitched and melancholy. The crystal clear sound resounded throughout the room, and Lin Meng looked around looking for the source of the sound. There were dozens of people here, but no one was singing, at least she didn't see it. Right in front of her, on either side of the room were rows of thick wooden tables, as if walking into a dining room. Sitting there are adventurers of all shapes and sizes. Humans, elves, and other races she's never seen before. All were dressed in a variety of costumes. They all gloomily looked down at their cups filled with amber and crimson liquids, and sat quietly in contemplation, listening to the strange voices around them crying and being fascinated. It was as if they were all lost in its calling.

When the girl walked in, some looked up at her, not out of curiosity, but seemed more out of excitement, as her quiet intrusion interrupted their silent lamentation. What is it? Is this the Adventurer's Guild? It felt like she was walking into a funeral. There was a heavy and tense atmosphere in the air. Her heart was beating faster again, was it here? Is she in the wrong place? Directly in front, past rows of tables is a bar. A waitress stood there, rubbing a crystal glass with her eyes closed, and she listened quietly to the mournful aria whose source had not been found.

Lin Meng clenched his fists, it was too late to turn back now. She swallowed silently and stepped forward towards the bar owner, only glancing at the very eye-catching sign hanging to the left of the door. She wanted to be pampered, but the pressure of being stared at was too great, and she could only walk awkwardly. The eyes of those around her followed her steps away, and returned to the cup in their hand, which they placed in front of them, staring in confusion. The elf-like woman at the back of the bar was dressed in clothes that Lin Meng had thought would be worn by a more senior bartender. Simple black trousers with a belt on top, white buttoned up, rolled up sleeves and a buttoned black vest over the outside. Her hair feels gray, gray blonde! Grooved back into a short loose ponytail that hangs down the back of the head. Two long bangs hung down in front of her face, and there were large burn scars under one eye and cheek. She is hardly much older than Lin Meng.

When the girl nervously walked to the bar, the bartender opened her eyes and walked towards her, not with a complicated expression like the others. She had no expression on her face, without any particular sadness or joy. It feels like it's just a blank slate. Lin Meng wanted to open her mouth and ask her where the guild was, or if she had come to the right place. But the words came to her lips and were not spoken, and it was difficult for her to explain herself, but there was no sound to be heard except for singing, except for the sound of a chair being dragged or a quilt being placed on the table. It seems wrong for her to break this silence.

The elf looked at her, her expression changing to an unusual curiosity. But just as Lin Meng closed her mouth again, the woman nodded, as if she understood what she was thinking now. Lin Meng understood this as a nod of greeting, and then nodded in response. The bartender turned around and picked up a small wine glass and a bottle filled with a black viscous liquid, and after pouring it full, he slid across the bar and came to Lin Meng.

She looked at it uncertainly, because she certainly couldn't afford this. Beads of sweat on her forehead as her heart began to flutter. Lin Meng raised his hand, waved lightly and said, "No!" Then she quietly gave the woman the three small coins in her hand. The bartender's expression didn't change, she turned her head to look at Lin Meng, and pushed the glass towards her again with a finger, and as the glass moved, the black liquid inside barely floated. It should be sticky.

What does that mean? What should she do? She didn't even drink much before. Why did a woman give her this? Lin Meng took a step back. The song called around her, never stopping. Its calm, numbing presence didn't ease her anxiety.

Something bumped into her, and Lin Meng looked down at it in surprise.

The masked little man, the one she had first met, the bartender who filled the second glass of wine, slid it towards them as well. What's going on? What situation did she put herself in?

Fresh hands took the shot glass, looked uncertainly, and then looked down at the little man who accompanied her, who held up the completely blurred white wooden mask, only an inch away from their faces. They raised their small glasses and toasted her. Fresh, not knowing what else to do, feeling the weight of the stranger's and goalkeeper's eyes pressing on him, he picked up his own cup, quietly smashed it on the outstretched lens, and drank the black liquid at once.
