Chapter XXXVIII: Waterdeep 1
Sunlight filters in through the cracks in the velvet curtains, and the scent of flowers and plants drifts in with the air, competing with incense and ink for the sense of smell. There was a knock on the door outside, three long and three short. Then there was the sigh, the sound of a tray on the ground, and the sound of a man's departing footsteps.
Siegel woke up slowly, only to feel a sore back. He stayed up too late to learn spells and fell asleep on the table again. Stand up and stretch. The black tea placed next to the table had already cooled, but Siegel didn't mind and picked it up and drank it down.
It's a small three-story building in the northern part of Waterdeep, with its own garden and stables, right next to the "Three Peaks Tower" of the Mage Federation, and is a quiet place that few people come to. The original owner of the place was a merchant surnamed Deep, who was robbed of his goods by the wildlings north of Waterdeep, and died of a heart attack after going bankrupt. His widow wants to sell the house and pay off her debts so that her children can continue their education. Siegel came at the right time to buy the place with the help of Marcus Goren (owner of the Foam Barrel Tavern). After hearing the story, he kept the poor widow alive on the grounds that he wanted to learn spells himself, so he needed someone who could take care of food and cleaning. Mrs. Linda Deepp was very grateful and promised to do her duty, so she moved into the servant's room and stayed.
The Mage Guild in Waterdeep has always been an open and inclusive organization, and he is there for all mages who come to the New World. Here is the most important teleportation array in the New World, which can be connected to the Supreme Library of the Old World in an instant, which is the core of the Mage Guild. Therefore, when necessary, the Federation can obtain the strong support of the Mage Association, and no other force dares to move here.
It is precisely because of this confidence that the Mage Federation has opened a "study salon" to open up a channel for beginners who are interested in mastering magic. The price of learning is expensive, and it is a very loose form of self-study, but every week a few mages or doctoral students are organized to give lectures to teach the mage apprentices to get started as soon as possible. There are also frequent salons where apprentices and new mages can exchange experiences and promote the learning of magic.
Siegel had plenty of money, so it was easy for him to sign up and get books and lab materials related to the course. Learning at the beginning was very difficult, and Siegel had never been exposed to a formal education after all, so he had too much to tutor. Accurate pronunciation and correct writing, preliminary calculation power and classification methods, a large number of material properties and illustrated books of flora and fauna. For those aristocrats from well-to-do families, this is knowledge that they can slowly grasp as they grow up, but Siegel needs to learn it quickly in a relatively short period of time.
So apart from an hour of intense physical activity every day, Siegel spends all of the rest of his time studying. With the tenacity he had honed at sea, he spent two months rebuilding the basics, being able to understand the beginner's lessons, and quickly learned the dragon language, the language used by humans to chant magical spells.
A week ago, during an important lesson, the official mages of the Federation taught the spell "Spell Interpretation". Its function is to take the magic instructions written on paper and form a model of the spell in the mind, and all mages must learn this spell, which is the basis for learning and transforming magic.
It took Siegel a long time to master this magic, and then he kept practicing, using "Spell Interpretation" to learn magic materials, and he was busy until late at night, and finally mastered this spell completely and became an apprentice mage. This meant that he could learn spells slowly by reading other people's magic books, which was already a simple introduction.
For this, he was excited for a long time. He had two spell books for elementary spells, items belonging to the Wizards of the Knox Society. He also found a detailed explanation of the spell in the Rubik's Cube, but he still couldn't understand the spell on it, so he had to let it continue to sleep in the key space.
Through two elementary spell books, Siegel has been practicing basic magic. He has an amazing understanding and learning ability, and he has also cast spells by mistake, and he is physically and mentally prepared. Unbeknownst to anyone, it took Siegel less than four months to be able to perform multiple basic spells in less than four months from his arrival in Waterdeep to reach out to spells, a speed that had never been seen before.
Siegel didn't care about his record-breaking, and was still immersed in learning magic. He and Linda had agreed in advance to bring breakfast every day, but if the door was not opened, they only needed to put the tray outside the door and not push the door in.
Breakfast was cereal, boiled eggs, ham and oranges, typical Waterdeep style food, simple and rustic. Siegel finished his food in a few bites, then went downstairs with his plate. The cook is busy, washing vegetables and marinating lamb – it's the first day of autumn and everyone has to celebrate.
Ms. Linda Deepe is a human woman in her thirties with a dignified appearance and elegant manners. After her husband's death, she was left to live for her seven-year-old son, Carl. Carl is studying arithmetic and writing at the Temple of the Moon, hoping to find an opportunity to enter the Templar and become a respected priest. Even in the Temple, learning opportunities were limited, and only the best could join, so Carl worked very hard and rarely went home. Every time Siegel saw their mother and son, he couldn't help but think of the time when he was an ordinary seafarer. There are few opportunities to learn, and the bloodline is not noble, so it is basically impossible to get ahead. Class is as much a privilege as knowledge, and if it weren't for the adventures of Sir Bill, and then befriending Leah, Irint, and Dio, he wouldn't have been able to sit here and learn magic now. Even though Carl didn't say anything, Siegel could see the look of envy in his eyes. And Ms. Linda, who always called him "Young Master" in a way that couldn't be changed, but Siegel never thought of himself as a nobleman, just a lucky ordinary person.
"Lady Linda, prepare more good food for the evening, and leave one for Carl as well. If possible, buy some fresh fish. Siegel said, "I'm going out for a while, and I'll be back for dinner at noon." ”
"No problem, young master. ”
It's Wednesday and Siegel is going to the Foam Barrel Bar today to check the news. Elliint would correspond with him regularly, and if there was any news of Sir Bill, he promised to pass it on. But for months, it was as if Jazz had disappeared completely, and there was no news at all. His Royal Highness the Prince of the Star Nation is nowhere to be found: it is rumored that the Prince is near Fort Hub in Waterdeep, and Viscount Kira-Stadt believes that His Royal Highness has gone to the elven territory of Xinlin, while Leah, who is in Xinlin, denies this news. News from Mora's Top says that His Royal Highness has gone north, even beyond the northern defenses of Waterdeep, into the wildling's controlled area.
