EP.37 Best Partner
At Hogwarts, Quirrell was not an obnoxious person.
It's not because he's good, or how friendly and understanding he is, it's just that in the eyes of most people, he's not qualified to be hated.
Although Hagrid swore that Quirrell had been a good student at Hogwarts and that he had not been as nervous as he was before returning from Albania, he blamed all his character flaws on the reckless trip he had embarked on to "gain practical experience". But in fact, the original Quirrell was actually not very likable.
After graduating from school, he worked for a time as a teacher of Muggle Studies, a subject that, like the people it represented, was completely unpopular among students. For someone like Quirrell who is ambitious to make a career in his post and have his talents recognized by everyone, this is not a good starting point.
He was indeed very good at reading, and he was not bad at magic, and Hagrid did not lie about this. But to be a great teacher, or to go further, to be a fame and fortune, these two things are not enough. As time went on, his introverted, timid, and lack of self-confidence began to come to light, making his situation in school even more difficult.
After taking over the Defence Against the Dark Arts reins the whip, the situation deteriorated even further - a hard to imagine fact, as the only Hogwarts faculty member who had a lower voice than Muggle Studies teachers was the house-elves who worked in the kitchen, and even Filch's cat was more respected among the students, though that respect was mostly due to fear. When you leave the pulpit and switch to teaching a cooler, more popular, and more talented course, you generally feel better in the minds of your students than you did in the past...... Right?
But Quirrell is an example of that "unusual".
On the day he accepted Dumbledore's appointment, he seemed so high-spirited, as if the ridicule and contempt he had endured so far had finally been cleared, and he set out on a journey with the high-pitched fighting spirit of all his previous actions, determined to see the so-called "dark magic" with his own eyes, and everyone could see how vulnerable those evil forces were to his talent...... Before he turned into a wretched creature who was more cowardly, more timid, and more like a gutter rat, he was still somewhat confident in his magic skills.
No one knew what had happened to him outside, but since he had returned, he had not taken off the turban that was said to be some kind of holy relic, and the smell of incense purportedly expelling evil spirits was perpetually emitting from his body, and he was obviously really frightened.
Colleagues in the past have thought that for someone like Quirrell, a few swamp-dwelling trolls or a vampire that is not yet fully civilized will be enough to keep him from possession. For the first month of school, he had been in that trance-like state, with a terrified expression on his face, trembling and shrinking into a ball at the slightest movement.
Most people believe that over time, he will be able to free himself from his nightmarish memories and return to his normal self, that is to say, from the current "terrible" to the "ordinary bad" state. It's just that so far, there has been no sign of improvement in him.
Hagrid gritted his teeth until the end and didn't tell Harry a word about it, knowing very well how hurtful the scorn from the students could be to the teacher, so he was very reluctant to let gossip about Quirrell spread all over the world. But he forgot that Hogwarts actually had more well-informed and loose-spoken sources of information than he did.
For example, the portraits on the walls on both sides of the hallway, the ghosts wandering around, and ......
"I thought we had agreed on the issue of non-interference."
Severus Snape sat behind his desk, smiling and winking at Neil - the bastard didn't even knock on the door before he entered the office, but Snape couldn't do anything about it. Verbal insults, demerit points, confinement...... These small tactics he used to sow up strife between the houses were of no use to Neil, he didn't care about those things at all, and sometimes he didn't even pretend to care.
To hurt a person is to attack what is important to him, and at least in Snape's opinion, there is no such target within the scope of his power.
"You begged me to stay on the sidelines and turn a blind eye to your suspicious behavior, and I agreed." He paused, letting the sarcasm fill his voice, "And now, you want me to give you information?" ”
He stood up, walked around his desk to Neil, and looked down condescendingly at the other man - this was Snape's favorite position when talking to people, and what was the point of communication between people if you couldn't completely overshadow them in the middle of a conversation?
"I'm curious, Mr. Wan, what is supporting you to provoke my bottom line again and again. Am I a giver in your heart? ”
Neil bowed deeply and respectfully, looking very frightened, and his stomach was almost touching his thigh.
"No, Professor, I've never had such a rude thought. You are my teacher, my elder, and my important guest, and I have always respected you in my heart. ”
At this time, the shallow businessman often couldn't hold back the three words "wronged" that blurted out, and at most he reacted halfway through to temporarily stop his mouth, but Neil's flaws in a word were not exposed, and even his facial expression was not affected.
"Then why do you think I'll agree to help you?" Snape asked coldly, ready to sneer back in the meanest language of whatever the other person answered.
Neil blinked innocently, "Could it be that the little differences between us are more important than your repentance?" ”
The sneer on Snape's face vanished, and his expression instantly became terrifying. So far, there is only this sentence in the world that can make his heart lose in an instant, but it is also the only sentence that can prompt him to control himself and not to pounce on the other party and tear the other party to shreds now.
When he spoke again, his attitude was much calmer than before. It's just that the idea of making the other party suffer a little sooner or later has not disappeared, but it is just gradually improving towards a truly feasible plan as the mood calms down.
"What does this have to do with Quirrell?"
"I had to figure out where this bad feeling was coming from." Neil replied without thinking.
To be honest, even Neil himself can't explain the reason for staying away from Quirrell - it's extremely rare for someone like him to be immersed in nonsense like "the sidewalk is the way of walking, different from the way of car, we can only see the front of the house from the sidewalk, but not the back of the house, and we can only stand on the road to get the verification of it". The disgust seemed to be innate, and he instinctively didn't want to get close to the other person.
"The Ancient Blood is screaming, Professor, and it seems very reluctant to let me get close to Quirrell Quirrell, and I've survived so far by following its guidance. I wonder what happened to him that could trigger such strong feelings......"
Speaking of which, he thought for a moment and added.
"Of course, if Headmaster Dumbledore had told me again this time that this was another hidden stake he had arranged beforehand, I might have been tempted to break the rules and do something horrible to the client...... He really likes to watch everyone dance in the palm of his hand, doesn't he? ”
Snape managed to control his urge to nod.
