Chapter 31: The Caged Bird
The Military Technologies Group was one of the main players in the Fourth Corporate War, in which Military Technologies clashed fiercely with its rival, Arasaka Corporation. After a nuclear explosion at Night City headquarters in Arasaka, President Elizabeth Kress nationalized the military tech conglomerate, using its assets to bolster the collapsing U.S. military. Since then, the company has regained some of its independence, and some members of its board of directors still hold senior positions in the Ministry of Defense.
And military technology is often accused of engaging in morally inappropriate or blatantly illegal covert operations, such as hiring private armies to support revolutions, military coups, assassinations, terrorist attacks, and ethnic cleansing. The company is also suspected of planting and detonating a nuclear bomb at the Arasaka Group's Night City headquarters in 2023, though there is no evidence to confirm these claims.
In the office, the projection on the large screen shows the recent riots in Taiping Chau, since the theft of a batch of robots of Military Technology, the management of Military Technology is furious, vowing to find out the people behind the ghost and find these robots. Their first target is their rival Arasaka, and the two companies have formed a blood feud in the Fourth Corporate War.
The beginning of the Fourth Corporate War was a competition between two marine technology companies. At the end of 2021, negotiations between two marine development companies, CINO (International Maritime and Offshore Corporation) and OTEC (Marine Technology and Energy Corporation), reached an impasse over control of the remaining assets of a third-party company, IHAG (International Merchant Marine Company). The competition was fierce, and relations quickly deteriorated after the brutal financial confrontation ended. OTEC hired a military technology conglomerate to defend its interests and gained the upper hand in the struggle for a while. Naturally, CINO was not to be outdone and signed an employment contract with the Arasaka Group. At this point, the Fourth Corporate War, also known as the War of the Seas, officially broke out.
As in the early stages of corporate conflict, the first wave of blows unfolded quietly in the shadows β mid-level employees were assassinated, and some unseemly information was stolen or exposed. Both sides hired cyber hackers as strike forces, and they launched massive hacking attacks against the enemy's cached data and stock holdings, which in turn caused huge fluctuations in the global economy. These incidents forced cyber surveillance to impose a temporary communications blockade on the Arasaka group and the military technology group, but the show has only just begun. By the time the European Bank succeeded in mediating the conflict between CINO and OTEC, the real conflict had quietly shifted to the military technology group and the Arasaka group. At the beginning of 2022, a new conflict between the two security giants has begun, and now, this war is known as the shadow war. It also marks the second phase of the Fourth Corporate War.
The conflict in the shadow war phase is more open and brutal than before. Mercenaries and cyber walkers flocked to the two security companies to launch overt military operations and raids on enemy military and scientific institutions. While the nature of conflict is instinctive, the deadliest battle on the web begins when companies unleash a new generation of devastating viruses on their adversaries with cyber actors they hire. Some of this code is still running years after the death of its creator, leaving behind vast areas of darkness in cyberspace that cannot be repaired.
In June 2022, both the military technology group and the Arasaka group agreed that there was no longer a need to stick to a surgical skirmish, and the conflict entered its third phase, a thermal weapons war. The conflict between the two companies skyrocketed into an all-out war. Some cities, such as Rio de Janeiro, have been razed to the ground, and their residents have either been killed or uprooted as refugees.
Global trade has been paralyzed by military operations and market collapses. International trade routes have been dealt a heavy blow, and piracy is rampant and unscrupulous. While real-world conflicts are raging, cyber surveillance is also doing its best to protect the security of cyberspace. However, due to the corruption of server groups and databases around the world, as well as the destruction of thousands of viruses, cyberspace gradually died out, as we know it.
Eventually, countries around the world are tired of clashes between businesses. Some governments have begun to publicly blame the military technology conglomerate and the Arasaka conglomerate for the current situation, and have withdrawn their support for both companies while nationalizing their own assets. The Southern California Free State seized two companies' headquarters in Los Angeles. Texas and a number of European countries have followed suit with sanctions.
The Arasaka Tower, located in Night City, was the last of the Arasaka Group's headquarters in the United States to fall. The tower was obliterated by a tactical nuclear weapon detonated by an unknown mercenary group. There is information that the so-called "Atlantis Group", which includes Rogge, Morgan Black Hand, and Johnny Silverhand, who have become urban legends, are also involved, but there is not enough evidence to confirm the group's involvement. Morgan and Johnny have not been seen since the Arasaka Tower incident, and Rogge has repeatedly denied any involvement in the operation.
At the end of 2023, under pressure from the Japanese government, Arasaka finally conceded defeat, and the military technology group was victorious, but suffered the same heavy losses as his opponent.
In the company, Meredith Stott, the director of special operations of military technology, clasped his hands in front of him, and said with a grim face: "The situation is probably like this, there is a group of unknown guys who stole the company's military robots and threw themselves into the gang battle in Taipingzhou. β
A group of subordinates: "Yes! β
"Okay, Zoe, you stay. Others go out. β
"Zoe Frey, the third daughter of the Frey family, her father Daemon Frey is a high-ranking official of the Ministry of Defense, the eldest brother Horst Frey, a full member of the board of directors of military technology, and the second brother Harry Frey, a member of the Night City Council. Am I right? β
"That's right.... Director Meredith. β
"With a family background like yours, wouldn't it be good to be an honest lady at home, how did you think of working in the company, or this kind of life-threatening work department."
"I want to prove myself, no worse than my brothers, and I want to be recognized by my father." Zoe said bluntly.
"Hehe.... It's honest, but it's still naΓ―ve. β
"What do you mean?"
"Listen up to Zoe, a person of your status is not suitable to work here, if one day you have an accident under my hands, our entire department will not be happy, and you will be a big trouble and a big burden for me. Do you understand? Meredith said coldly.
In the face of Meredith's words, Zoe protested very stubbornly: "I can be responsible for my own safety, you don't need to worry." β
"In short, I don't agree with you to participate in this operation mission in Taipingzhou, you stay in the company honestly, you just need to write a report, don't make trouble for me, let alone find yourself unhappy, otherwise don't blame me for being rude, I have a way to deal with a little girl like you."
"But....... I. Zoe was interrupted just as she wanted to debate.
"Now you can get out."
Faced with Meredith's relentless orders, Zoe had to walk out of the office sullenly.
This is not the first time that she has been treated differently because of her status, and if given the choice, Zoe has wished she had been born into an ordinary family more than once.
After all, if you cherish your feathers so much that they don't get damaged in the slightest, you'll lose your wings and never be able to fly in the air again.
