Chapter Seventy-Four: The Departure Ceremony
Many streets of Jerusalem today are much emptier than usual.
People gathered in front of the Cathedral of the Holy Sepulchre to watch the departure ceremony of the Crusades, and the dense crowds blocked everything.
When the regent Raymond needed to go north, all the affairs of the Knights of Jerusalem were piled up in the hands of Baron Goffrey.
He rode his horse side by side with Lothar and made his rounds.
Lothar laughed and quipped, "Baron GoldFrey, your dark circles are like the eye powder used to decorate those Saracen slave girls, it seems that the position of commander is not so easy to do." β
Gao Frey said angrily: "I haven't had a good night's sleep in three days, and the Jerusalem Knights are much larger than the Royal Knights!" β
The Knights of Jerusalem have more than 30,000 members, including many honorary members, of course.
But the part that remained in Jerusalem, which was directly under the orders of the king and the Grand Master, also numbered as many as 3,000 armed men, not including non-combatants such as servants.
Compared to the Royal Knights, which had a total of only 800 people, the Knights of Jerusalem were indeed a behemoth.
"I hope Lord Tiberias won't be like Lord Godfrey and leave a commander in the Order who is bent on bringing down the Grand Master."
"Oh? It turns out that Lord Gofrey is the commander, so it's okay. β
Baron Gofrey said angrily: "This year, I have to stay in my fiefdom for half of the time, and I have also taken a boat to Provence, and the affairs of the Order have to be handed over to Count Philippe, which has made his prestige in the Order soar, but how do I know that he will openly stand up and challenge your position?" β
They were actually in a good mood, after Count Raymond and other members of the Counts, as well as some of the Queen's nobles who had gone on the expedition, had left Jerusalem.
The royal party finally gained more power.
The nearly 800 troops of the Royal Knights and the 3,000 troops of the Jerusalem Knights were in the hands of Lothar and Baron Gaufrey, two hardcore royal parties, respectively.
Although the city defense army, as well as the noble private soldiers of the Queen Mother's Party, and the pilgrims, the newly formed crusaders were still in the hands of others, but this was also a great improvement.
Lothar and Baron Gofrey, respectively, led their hussars to the Cathedral of the Holy Sepulchre.
Hordes of soldiers, walking past the cathedral, receive the blessings of the clergy.
First of all, there are the elite knights in chain mail, burqas, and cloaks, who bring their attendants and carry all kinds of banners, all of them majestic.
There were even quite a few cavalrymen, even their mounts were covered with robes and leather armor to defend against the arrows of the Saracen cavalry.
Templars with red crosses on a white background, Hospitallers with white crosses on a black background, crosses, eagles, brown bears, beasts, irises... All kinds of coats of arms are inscribed on the plackets of those nobles and knights.
This was followed by a neat contingent of sergeants.
In the center of them was a huge chariot.
On the frame, there stood a huge golden cross, this was not a real cross, the real relics were stored under the cross, and in a chest on the chariot, guarded by a whole team of battle monks.
Because it was only a wooden block that could not be held up to the point where everyone could see it, the golden cross was cast to show that the relics were in the army.
Finally, there were the crusaders formed by the pilgrims.
Their team was a little chaotic and could only barely maintain a relatively neat state.
They couldn't even guarantee a deformed, worn iron helmet, and many of the spears they used were rusted with iron heads.
The shabby burqa, covered with inferior paint, is a red cross made in a hurry.
The amount of gold donated by Henry II was a lot of money, but even if he collected all the arsenal reserves, he could not arm such a huge army in a short time.
What's more, the army going north is only half of the army in Jerusalem, and it can also be supplemented by local lords along the way.
Therefore, most of the pilgrim crusaders, who were barely well-equipped, remained in the Holy City and were still in a state of training.
Lothar and his hussars, the royal knights, stood guard at the front of the church, guarding the empty throne behind him.
On the minaret, the bells rang endlessly.
The common people also gathered around, holding up images of the Son, the Virgin and the saints, praying earnestly that the warriors would return victoriously and kill all the infidels who had invaded the border.
Archbishop of Tyre and many of the clergy, standing before the throne, shouted: "May St. Michael bless you, devout believers, as you pass by the Holy Sepulchre, and be infected with the divine light, may you be invincible on the battlefield, and that no arrows or swords will hurt your body!" β
People shouted feverishly.
On this day, no matter how high or low, it seems that everyone is declaring their piety to the people around them.
This is, inside the cathedral.
The servants carried their shoulders and slowly came to the throne, and Baldwin IV, who had not been seen for a long time, slowly walked down from his shoulders, moving gracefully and slowly.
Except that he was still wearing a veil and wrapped in airtightness, he looked almost no different from a normal person.
His Majesty the King, today wears a white royal robe, wears a golden crown on his head, and holds a golden scepter in his hand, the top of the scepter, which is a curved, golden cross, which means natural monarchy.
It is the king of Jerusalem, both a secular king and a theological "shepherd."
The gold and white color scheme is the color represented by the royal family of Jerusalem and the coat of arms.
Just as the Gallic royal family favored blue, the royal family of Albion preferred red, and the imperial royal family preferred purple.
A plainly dressed servant, armed with a sword, stood beside Baldwin IV.
He was the servant who was in charge of delivering the word and leading Lothar to the king.
It's always so inconspicuous on weekdays.
But Lothar now understood that this servant was definitely not a simple person, because Lothar had carefully observed, and he held the saber in his hand, and the scabbard was made of demonic gold.
Knights, sergeants, commoners shouted Long live the king.
It was the first time they had seen His Majesty the King in recent times.
Although legend has it that the king was an unclean man cursed with leprosy, he was also the Providential Monarch who had saved Jerusalem from Saladin's iron heelsβand he was seen as the closest thing to God.
Some knights and nobles began to recite their own proverbs aloud, implying that they would return with honor and not disgrace their family proverbs.
His Majesty did not speak, but raised the scepter alof, allowing the people to admire its sparkle.
Baldwin IV did not linger long, but re-mounted his shoulders and walked towards the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre.
The huge team began to leave the city in an orderly manner, which was a long process, and many of the nobles standing in the stands felt their feet tingle.
But I still had to stay here to watch the ceremony.
Lothar took Prajna and Frynn, looking around vigilantly, beware of someone, intending to take the opportunity to cause chaos.
For this ceremony, all the heretics in the city have been ordered not to go out.
Even Zoroastrian altars and temples were closed.
