Chapter 31: Wasted Effort
The Halloween dinner seemed to last longer than usual, probably because it was their second feast in two days, and the students didn't enjoy the well-prepared food as much as they usually did. They all craned their necks to look around, showing impatient looks, and fidgeted from time to time to see if Dumbledore had finished eating. Like them, Lockhart just wanted to finish his meal quickly and hear who had been chosen.
The gold plates were finally cleaned and spotless. The noise in the hall continued unabated. But as soon as Dumbledore stood up, all the noise was gone, and Professor Karkaroff and Madame Maxime stood beside him, as nervous and hopeful as the others. Lou Bagmun smiled and winked at the students, while Mr. Scrimgeour looked expressionless.
"Well, the Goblet of Fire is almost ready, and the decision can be made," Dumbledore said, "I guess it'll be a minute, and the student whose name is called is to walk to the end of the hall and walk through this door to the next room along the staff table." He pointed to the door behind the clerk, "They'll be there to take the first order." β
Dumbledore took out his wand and swung it vigorously, extinguishing all but the candle in the carved pumpkin. All of them are in the dark. Only the flaming goblet of flame shone brightly in the entire hall, and the dazzling blue and white flames stinged the eyes. Everyone is watching, waiting, some are looking at their watches.
Lockhart is undoubtedly the most nervous, he knows who the three warriors are, but whether there is a fourth is what he cares about.
"It's time!"
"The player representing Durmstrang is," his voice is clear and powerful, "Victor Krum." β
Applause, the talk faded away. After a few more seconds of attention to the cup, it turned red again, and the flame pushed out a second piece of parchment.
"The contestant representing Beauxbatons is," Dan Bodeau announced, "Fleur Delacour!"
"Ron, it's her!" Harry cried. The girl stood up gracefully. Flicking back, the forging blonde hair strutted between the Ravenclaw and Heffbaf tables.
"On behalf of Hogwarts. He shouted, "Cedric Diggory!"
"Excellent!" Dumbledore was overjoyed after the last commotion. "Now, we have selected three players. I am confident that all of you, including the remaining students of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, will support your fighters wholeheartedly and wholeheartedly. Cheer them on, your contribution will be very realβ"
Dumbledore suddenly stopped talking.
Lockhart had been staring at the Goblet of Fire, and when the flames in the Goblet turned red for the fourth time, he stood up nervously.
A piece of parchment spat out of the flames, and he felt a darkness in front of him, and sat down in his chair, almost fainting.
"Gildero, are you alright?" Professor McGonagall next to him was startled, and Lockhart resisted the shame of being teased, got up from his chair, and went straight to Dumbledore next to the Goblet of Fire.
Dumbledore watched Lockhart walk straight up to him and handed him the parchment in his hand. Lockhart took it: Harry Potter.
After a whole day of monitoring the Goblet of Fire, and he didn't even know when the enemy was doing it, Lockhart shivered with anger and walked into the crowd and pulled Harry Potter out, startling the Gryffindor students next to him, and Hermione sat close to her, letting out a scream.
"Gildero, calm down!" Dumbledore snorted, and Lockhart recovered from his frantic stance. "Harry, you go behind that door first. β
"The Goblet of Fire has been caught in the Confusion Charm, it's a conspiracy! Someone wants to harm Harry Potter!" Lockhart couldn't care about his demeanor anymore at this time, "He can't participate in this tournament!"
"Gildero, we'll talk about that later," Dumbledore turned to Harry, "Harry, what are you doing standing, I'll let you go behind that door first." β
Harry walked forward along the teacher's desk and walked through the door, and the audience stared at him blankly. He was completely stunned that what Professor Lockhart had feared had happened.
Lockhart was then dragged by Dumbledore, and the adults walked through the door, leaving hundreds of students talking.
"It can't be," said Madame Maxime, her large, opal-wearing hand resting on Floru's shoulder. "You can't have two players at Hogwarts, that's unfair. β
"Dumbledore, we all believe that your age line will prevent young people from signing up. Karkaroff was still the same grim look, but his gaze was even colder. "Otherwise, of course, we will bring more candidates from the school, and the scope will be larger. β
"It's all Potter's fault, Karkaroff," Snape said mildly. The black eyes shone with an evil light. "Don't blame Dumbledore for Harry's insistence on breaking the rules, he's been in trouble since he's been here. β
Lockhart couldn't wait to jump, "Severus, it's not Harry Potter, I've been watching the Goblet of Fire for the past twenty-four hours! No one can do anything right under my nose, let alone a child!"
Snape was silent, but his eyes still glowed with evil through his greasy black hair.
Professor Dumbledore looked at Lockhart, and Lockhart became even angrier: "Even if Harry signs up, it should be a Hogwarts warrior, not a fourth." β
Dumbledore looked at Harry, "Harry, did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?"
"No," Harry replied, "Professor Lockhart kept watching. β
Snape snorted softly, clearly impatient and distrustful.
Dumbledore ignored Snape, and he continued, "Did you ask the students older than you to put them for you?"
"No!" Harry reacted strongly.
"Well, of course he's lying!" said Madame Maxim.
Lockhart looked at the group of people in front of him and said his lines clearly, and became impatient: "Yes, yes, yes, it may have been Harry's doing, but no matter what, he can't participate in the competition!"
Professor McGonagall echoed the same sentiment.
"Mr. Scrimthour, Mr. Bagmuns," Dumbledore seemed to have an idea, "you are the referee, what do you say?" β
Scrimgeour said, "Whoever comes out of the Goblet of Fire has to participate in the tournament, and there is a magic contract." β
Lockhart suspected that Scrimgeour had been charged by the Imperius Curse, but reason told him that this wizard was much stronger than Barty Jr. and Barty Sr., and it was impossible for him to be hit.
"Then let Harry play and throw in the towel. Lockhart wanted to make one last effort, and then he looked at Harry menacingly, "Harry, if you trust me, give up the game." β
Bagmun came out to play a round: "It's a good idea, it keeps the contract, and there is no danger. β
"Sign up again. Madame Maxim was not convinced.
"That won't do," said Bagmunt, "the Goblet of Fire has just been extinguished, and it won't burn again until the next match." β
"We withdrew from the game. Karkarov was not convinced.
"Your student is already involved in the contract, sir. Bagmun explained.
"Harry would have gotten in the game and throw in the towel, that would have been the best thing to do!" Lockhart repeated again, "Harry, you're going to throw in the towel, right?" β
Harry didn't know if he was frightened or what, and was silent.
"No matter what, I'm not going to let Harry play, even if I knock him out and take him away!" Lockhart was completely hysterical, "I do what I say!"
