Chapter I
Rome, Italy.
The Vatican was shrouded in the silence of the night, the light moon was in the sky, and the tall buildings of the inner city dragged the majestic shadows on the ground. Many of the houses damaged in the previous attacks had not yet had time to be repaired, and the dilapidated ruins gave this copy a grim look to its solemn image.
It was silent, except for the occasional ghostly flash of the faint footsteps of the Holy See patrol guards in the corner, there was no sound in all directions, and there was an eerie silence.
In this quiet place, a figure flashed out of the shadows without warning, and walked towards the Vatican Center with such a swagger.
The visitor was dressed in a black dress and walked alone in the night. His demeanor is as if Louis XIV, the Sun King, was strolling leisurely through the exquisitely manicured gardens of Fontainebleau, completely out of step with the solemn atmosphere around him.
Slowly approaching, only to realize that the person who came was Lever. He walked idly with his hands in his pockets, seemingly casual, but always able to strike a wonderful balance between the shadows as he went. Under the night breeze, the placket of Lever's dress was slightly raised like the thin wings of a night moth, and the evil elegance was vividly displayed.
He had no intention of hiding at all, but several times he walked past the guards who were wide-eyed and vigilant, and they ignored him as if they were airy, and the darkness was like a light feather coat, completely hiding his whereabouts.
With such a swaggering transfer of ownership, Lever entered a no-man's land, and finally came to the Papal Hall in the center of the Vatican. This solemn Baroque building, which had collapsed in half after several attacks, was littered with large pieces of rubble that had not had time to be cleared, and was briefly covered by a curtain around it.
Standing in front of a shadow in front of the curtain, Lever rested his chin in one hand and looked at the remnants of the Papal Hall with interest. In the moment, a group of papal guards on night patrol walked almost tightly against his body, their boots clicking neatly on the stone floor, but Lever didn't even look back.
It wasn't until the figure of the papal guard disappeared around the corner that Lever tilted his head, took two steps through the curtain, and walked into the depths of the hall around the collapsed ruin.
After fumbling around the walls, Lever quickly found the entrance to the Inquisition, and with a few strokes on the door, he untied the barrier and re-entered the place where he had been imprisoned for four hundred years.
Dark, rancid, hopeless, eerie... The aura of the underground inquisition, which was so familiar to Levle, that he couldn't help but take a deep breath, and a look of disgust immediately appeared on his face.
"Stayed here too long? I would have felt so graciousβ" muttered, and Lever shook his head at what he thought was ridiculous, and walked down the circular staircase.
Amid the monotonous sound of dripping water from nowhere, Lever gradually walked down, and just as he was about to reach the bottom floor, he suddenly heard a loud shout from the darkness: "What person!? β
Lever didn't answer, and after a moment, the voice turned to extreme surprise: "Lord Lever? β
As he spoke, a gloomy man with his head and face in the clergyman's hood stepped out of the darkness, holding a dim wind lamp that slightly dispersed the darkness around him.
If you look closely, you can recognize that this man is the same guide that Konstantin had been when he came to see Lever. There was a deep surprise on his face at the moment, obviously overwhelmed by Lever's sudden appearance here.
"Matthew, are you okay?" Lever smiled at him.
The priest named Matthew bowed respectfully to Lever, "I am fine, Lord Lever. At the same time, the man stepped backwards, resting on the heavy iron gate that cut off the road.
His attitude towards Lever is heartfelt and respectful, but his body movements are absolutely vigilant, which seems contradictory, but in fact it is very reasonable. Lever has been imprisoned here for four hundred years, and with his charisma, successive generations of guards have treated him with great respect, but these people are after all selected believers who have a strong faith in God, and in any case, they have a clear understanding of their duties, otherwise with their attitude towards Lever, I am afraid that they would have released him in private.
Lever was not surprised by Matthew's behavior at all, and slowly took a step closer, and he said indifferently: "Let me ask you, Matthew, where are those dragon eggs hidden?" β
Shocked, Matthew instinctively shook his head: "I don't know." β
With a snort, Lever looked at him mockingly: "Don't give me this set, although your guards are not known to the outside world, but their power is the most entrenched in the Vatican, what can I hide from you?" If there is something hidden in the Vatican that the Pope may not know, you will never know. β
A drop of cold sweat slowly slid down Matthew's cheek, he looked nervously left and right, and shook his head firmly again: "I dare not lie to you, Lord Lever, I really don't know anything. β
Lever didn't continue to ask, just smiled lightly: "Really?" Then I'll change the question, can you tell me what is being held in cells 1 through 3? β
If Matthew was just taken aback, then he was in a state of flux at this moment. He looked at Lever with his mouth wide open, and then stammered, "You... You ask... What does this do? β
Lever scratched his head: "As a real demon, I can only be locked up in cell four, so for the past four hundred years, I have wondered what is in the first three cells, and I am more 'valued' than me." If you don't want to say it, I don't mind seeing it for yourself. β
"Nope! You can't do that! You can't see it! Matthew suddenly screamed, his voice tinged with fear and horror that sounded terrible in the darkness of his cell.
Very pleased with his reaction, Lever leaned over: "So, tell me where the dragon egg is hidden?" Otherwise the consequences should be clear to you. β
"No... No..."Matthew couldn't help but shake his head, as if he wanted to squeeze his whole body in, desperately shrinking into the iron door behind him: "Even you, it's impossible to break the barrier of those three cells. β
In an instant, Lever's face became extremely hideous. Pulling Matthew over, he roared in a deep voice, "Don't provoke my competitiveness, or I'll really do it." Now for your last chance, where are the dragon eggs? β
Matthew was devastated, and the tenacity of his long stay in this hellish place could not stop him from crying like a helpless child, tears staining his pale face to the ground.
"I say, I say, but please forget about those three cells," Matthew sobbed, "something was sent by the Pope a month ago, and it was placed in the cell where you were held." β
"My cell?" Lever couldn't help but be stunned: "Konstantin knows how to choose a place. "The Inquisition is the most heavily defended place in the Vatican, and it is indeed the safest place to place dragon eggs.
"Open the door." Lever motioned for Matthew to get out of the way.
Matthew moved to the side, and said uneasily, "You promised..."
Lever snorted impatiently, "Don't worry, I have more important things to do." β
Knowing that he could no longer stop Lever, Matthew had no choice but to open the iron door. Under his guidance, Leval descended unhindered to the bottom of the dungeon and into the cell he knew so well. The books and other items in the cell have been cleaned up, and there are more than a dozen dragon eggs scattered on the smooth stone floor.
Seeing them, Lever smiled with satisfaction, and with a slight gesture of his hand, the dragon eggs had floated out of thin air, slowly gathering around him.
Turning around and walking out, Lever suddenly stopped, turned back to Matthew, and said, "Do you know what will happen if I take these dragon eggs?" β
Matthew nodded vigorously: "I know very well. But our guards throughout the ages have had a commandment that even if the whole of the Holy See were sacrificed, the contents of those three cells should never be allowed to escape. β
Glancing at him meaningfully, Lever nodded, "You should be glad that I do have something more important, otherwise I would have liked to be the guy in there..."
Holding the dragon egg in the air, Lever swaggered out of the Inquisition, as if he was not worried about him, and Matthew, who should have stayed underground for the rest of his life, followed him out without a single step.
Due to the dragon's egg, Lever could no longer hide his figure, and he was discovered by the Holy See guards who were patrolling the night after taking a few steps. With the phrase "What people! Soon a large number of guards had arrived from all directions.
Most of the guards didn't know the two, so while surprised how Lever managed to sneak here, they quickly fulfilled their duty and surrounded Lever and Matthew.
Naturally, Lever didn't pay attention to the papal guards, and Matthew also turned a blind eye to the chaos around him, just leaning over and looking at Lever worriedly.
The strange behavior of the two eventually aroused the vigilance of the leading priest, and besides, the dozen or so dragon eggs around Lever didn't look like ordinary things. Signaling his subordinates to be safe, the priest quickly reported the situation.
Ignoring the noise of the papal guards around him, Lever turned his head and asked with a smile, "What are you still doing with me?" β
Matthew was frightened: "Don't dare, I'm just... It's just..."
Lever patted Matthew on the head like a child, "I remember when you first came in, you were a hairy boy in your early twenties, full of devout faith in God. After all these years, compared to the guy who hung on the cross, have I ever lied to you? β
Without waiting for Matthew to answer, he already said to himself: "Don't worry, if I have a choice, I will never go back to that damn place for the rest of my life." β
Hearing him say this, Matthew's lowered face showed a relieved expression. Glancing disdainfully at the guards around him, Lever said leisurely, "It's time for me to go." β
During this time, the Vatican was tense, so as soon as the priest reported, Constantine hurried in under Locke's escort. At the sight of Lever and the dragon eggs floating around him, Konstantin almost collapsed to the ground as if he had been snatched out of his life.
"Stop him!" Konstantin shouted.
Turning back, Lever also spotted Konstantin stumbling over. At this moment, the frightened expression on Konstantin's face made him feel extremely happy, and he made a gesture of reaching out to Konstantin and swiping it around his neck, and Lever's right hand was raised abruptly, and at the same time, a gust of wind struck, and the huge vulture Shalai appeared in the air.
One-claw leaned down and grabbed Lever's shoulder, and with a long roar, Shalai flapped his wings into the night sky, leaving only the papal guards in the middle of the field looking at each other. Still a Templar, Locke reacted quickly, taking a step forward, he grasped the paladin's sword, and swung it diagonally into the air from the bottom to the top.
A blazing holy light left the sword and slashed into the air, how could he put this little holy light in his eyes, Lever flicked his finger in the void casually, and the holy light immediately changed direction and shot straight into the night sky.
In a matter of moments, Charle had taken Lever for miles, and soon disappeared into the sea of Roman lights. Watching Lever take away the dragon egg, Konstantin's face was as dead as ashes.
Suddenly, seeing Matthew cowering in a corner, Konstantin seemed to understand something, and he rushed over in anger and grabbed the jailer who looked like a dead man: "Look at what you have done, why do you let him take the dragon egg!" β
In the face of the exposed pope, Matthew has no respect at all. Glancing at Konstantin with cold eyes, he said slowly, "Because we have more important things to protect." β
"What's more than those dragon eggsβ" Konstantin exclaimed angrily, and in the middle of his sentence, he suddenly understood something.
"Yes, Lord Lever threatened me that he wouldn't mind meeting the prisoners in those three cells if he didn't hand over the dragon eggs." There was no more caution in the face of Levelle, Matthew said coldly.
As the Pope, it was impossible for Konstantin not to know the importance of the three cells, as if he had lost his last strength, he let go of Matthew with a long sigh: "It's over, it's all over now..."
Glancing at Constantine coldly, Matthew pulled up the hood of his clergyman's uniform and put it on his head, and without saying a word, he turned around and walked towards the dilapidated papal hall behind him, leaving only the Papal Guards who looked at the desperate pope in the middle of the field...
