Chapter 499: Thorough Investigation
As the sentinels disappeared from view along with the corpses, Tyrande whispered a few words of prayer. Then she frowned and said to Malfurion, "I've been told what Varian did. I was shocked. What happened to him after he left? Did you come with him?"
"I went and talked to him...... The result was not much better than the vote. We can't expect him to be the leader we seek, Tyrande. There's no time now. β
"Now more than ever! Love, don't you understand? Elune has foreseen it! Varian must lead us in this darkest hour!"
The Great Druid grimaced. "As long as he has a relationship with his son, he can't even lead himself. I've heard that two men had just had a fight before I dared to go to their lodgings. That kid has grown a lot. He was still young in terms of human age, but he was mentally mature. I think there will be more and more problems between Varian and him. β
"Elune can't be wrong, my love!"
He thought about it for a moment, then sighed. "There may be one more hope. Perhaps there is a way for him to accept what he has been through, and in doing so, to learn to forgive others, especially Jean. Because they have all made mistakes one after another. β
"What are you going to do?"
Malfurion took her in his arms and hugged her tightly. "First and foremost, continue to have faith in you. Secondly...... I think I'll have to invite Varian to go hunting......"
"Are you feeling better?"
Garrod moved. He was still a little stiff, and his shoulders hurt when he moved his arms, but other than that, everything was fine. The terrible torture he endured is now only a memory. But even that was too uncomfortable.
"Almost. He replied cautiously. "Where am I?"
"Where I stayed. Mavi replied. She crouched down beside her brother. A large glass of fruit wine was handed to him. Garrod found himself lying on a mat of reeds, which he assumed was Mavi's bed.
"Thank you. Garrod's gaze quickly swept across the room. As he had thought, Mavi had very few personal possessions in his room, save for a column of weapons leaning against the opposite wall. There is an intimidating attraction. Garrod remembered that his sister had a special interest in blades before she joined the Sisterhood, and he noticed that in addition to a remarkable set of Night Elf weapons, she had several items from other races that were apparently in her collection. "What's wrong with me. β
"You've stepped into a trap. That was undoubtedly to be used against the upper elves. If someone else stepped on it, he would have died. β
"I thought I was going to die. β
That made her laugh. "It's just a skin wound. β
Garrod realized the pride in her voice, proud of his toughness.
"Niva said you came for me," Mavi reminded.
He told her how he discovered the tragedy. and how Tyrande and Malfurion ask him to assist his sister in her investigation. Mavi snorted in acknowledging the suggestion.
"I've examined the body that tripped you," she replied, her voice smiling again. "Same as the first one. It seems that someone is very focused on this. I don't blame them. Who wants the High Elves to join us again?
"High priestesses and high druids want that. β
Mavi chuckled. "What about you? Do you forgive these high elves? Tell you the truth?"
He couldn't lie in front of her. "I think they have a lot to atone for, but I advocated forgiveness at the end of the War of the Ancients, and it still is. I trust the judgment of Tyrande and Malfurion. They are all people who have the highest interests of our people at heart. β
"Naturally. Mavi stood up, then held out her hand to him. "Are you done drinking?"
Garrod didn't even notice that he had finished his drink. He handed her the cup back and tried to stand up.
"Don't rush here, brother. β
These words made him even more determined to stand up. The former officer took a deep breath, then straightened up.
"Good," his sister commented. "If only you've recovered. I think we can start the mission again, huh?"
He remembered the corpse. "Have you double-checked the victim?"
"Within the little time they allow. The High Elf Valdinβdo you know him?βhad his dead companion quietly taken away. The action is even faster than last time. I think they weren't very happy with some of the examinees we did on the bodies. β
"Mavi ......"
"Hah, don't be upset, we didn't cut him open like the Assassins! I think the High Elves were afraid that I would find some magical gadget and hide it. She sneered. "It's like I want to get their power. No, let's go back to where you had an accident. Come ......"
He did not object to her proposal. They walked to the place where the Keeper was training, just in time to see Niva there again. She immediately joined the two of them, sticking to the other side of Garrod and touching him from time to time, making Garrod nervous.
"According to Niva, you were chasing something. Did you see it?"
"Nope. No matter who it is, it's too fast every time. β
"Whoever it is? Is it a person? Are you sure it's not an animal that appeared by chance?"
Garrod hesitated for a moment, then replied, "No. It's a person. He spoke to me and even helped me. β
The two women stopped. Mavi leaned over. "Tell me for. β
Garrod described the scene of their exchange and how apologetic he was about the target he was chasing.
"So he saved you, and then he ran away. It could be realizing that you're not the prey he wants: an upper-class elf. β
"He said he didn't know there was a trap here...... And why? What would a high-level elf do in this place?" At this point, they finally arrived at the scene, Garrod said, pointing to the place in front of him.
Niva immediately fell to her knees where she thought she had been lying. She scrutinized the trunk of the nearest tree. "There's something about this that we hadn't noticed before. Some fur. β
"Interesting. Mavi looked at it. "Hmm...... It's fur. And someone has helped you here...... Elder fur man?"
He easily grasped the meaning of her words. "You think it's a werewolf?"
"Probably. Werewolves have been spying on us at the edge of the city," his sister took the initiative. "They have been allowed to enter the city, and people have been allowed to go in from time to time. But they also seem to have developed an interest in sneaky activities in the neighborhood. β
The captain of the former guard blurted out, "Do you think they were the ones who killed the upper elves?"
"I don't know what reason they have -- I don't know for a moment -- but they could also be being used as a gunman. No one can rule it out. The notes were written in the same ancient script. β
"Then there must be a Night Elf in the middle," he affirmed. "Someone who lost a loved one in the war. β
"Well, the range is much smaller now. His sister interjected sarcastically.
"I'm going to talk to that werewolf again. Garrod was desperate to recall any detail, and that voice was the most important clue. "First figure out why he's lurking around here. But it may not have anything to do with the upper elvesβ"
Mavi snorted. "Oh, it must be! There is no other plausible explanation. β
He couldn't think of any other reason. "Where do werewolves live?" I've heard of it, but I'm not sure yet......"
"Oh, we know where they are. What do you think, Niva?"
The other caretaker rubbed Garrod with his arm and brought his face in front of him. "It's a good time too. β
Garrod was confused. "Do what?"
Mavi laughed. "Of course it's to investigate the wolves. β
"'Wolves'......" he finally understood. "Is that okay?"
"The High Priestess and the High Druid have authorized me to investigate this case thoroughly. Werewolves have to behave a little bit of a good way. β
She took the lead. Niva pulled Garrod until he finally couldn't stand the caretaker's movements and quickened his pace to follow Mavi. (To be continued......)
