Chapter 2: Who Am I?
Legend has it that in the eons of years before the birth of all things, in the endless time when all planes had not yet arisen, at the beginning of time and space, this world was empty but dark.
It all started in the dark. Darkness is the origin of all existence and the progenitor of all change, giving birth to the omniscient and omnipotent creator god Darimus, who single-handedly broke through chaos and spread his vast power into the endless nothingness, creating the existence out of the empty and vast nothingness.
The first thing was light. The light pierced the darkness and lit up nothing. Then, the hand of the creator god grasped the light and waved, and everything in the chaos flowed with it, never stopping, and time was born.
And then he created many, many things, including me and the world in which I live.
I don't know if this legend is true, but one thing I'm pretty sure of is that the sudden darkness did change a lot of things.
I don't know how long it took me to wake up from the darkness. In that absolutely lightless silent world, you will feel that everything has come to a standstill, vanished, and that the once sacred and powerful concept of "time" is completely frozen in a terrible nothingness, no longer meaningful.
When I woke up, it was business as usual. The sky was clear and the wind was clear, the grass was light and long, and the rough walls were connected into a gray-white ribbon, enveloping the city of Campunavia in the morning light.
The only difference is that the streets have become deserted. The bluestone road, which used to be blocked by the air waders who were always running around, was now empty. Only the natives who made a living from small business still stood by the shops where they made a living, quietly waiting for others to come.
My partner, the guy named Fred Guderian at the Gatekeepers, is still around. He still held the scabbard of his proud longsword in a serious manner, staring intently ahead.
Opposite him stood a kind-looking guard in guard armor and a standard sword at his waist. His eyes were large and bright, but they seemed to lack some sparkle. But he smiled kindly, as if he were ready to welcome visitors to the city.
Originally, this was a very ordinary gate guard, and there was no difference from the total eight guards of the four gates of Campunavia. But it was such an ordinary guard that made me feel an unprecedented shock.
I was suddenly desperate to find a mirror, hoping that it would tell me how I differed from the gate guard in front of me. I couldn't help but reach out and touch his nose to make sure it wasn't true.
The guard said to me suddenly, "Don't get too close to the jungle outside the city, Traveler, it's not as safe as it seems." About two months ago, a pack of wild dogs suddenly appeared there. They often attack pedestrians, causing panic in the city. Mr. Gerard, the sheriff, is worried about this, and if you feel strong enough to hunt down the three wild dogs and send their fur to the sheriff's office, Mr. Gerard will reward you. ”
I was so shocked that my jaw was about to dislocate. That's me! It's my voice! It's my lines! He spoke meticulously, and even the accents and staccato were exactly the same as mine. After that, he ignored me, as if he had no notice of my resemblance to him. Whether it's his demeanor or expression, I can't find out what makes him different from me.
What's going on? Is there an extra me in this world, standing in my place, exercising my duties, speaking to me what should have been said to me?
I looked away with some trepidation, and that's when I realized that the world I saw was a little different. Whether it's a house or a street, a layer of clear and bright colors fills my eyes. I knew every corner of the city as well as my palm prints, and I knew that nothing had changed, but for some reason, everything seemed so new and wonderful to me, and even the murmur of sewage in the roadside sink sounded so pleasant. I knew that some great changes were quietly taking place in my body, and it made me see things in the world that I had never seen before.
First of all, above everyone's heads, I saw a line of grass-green handwriting. Wherever they went, the line followed him. These are their names, for example, the patrol soldier who came over there has "Patrol Potter" on his head, and the hound that follows him has "Patrol Dog Fatl" on his head. I glanced intently at my partner, who had the words "Fred Guderian, the Gate Guard" written on his head.
I quickly came to the conclusion: this should be the imprint of each person's soul and a sign of their identity. I couldn't see them before, but now I don't know what's going on, and I have abilities that I didn't have before.
With this in mind, I immediately turned my gaze eagerly to the head of the gate guard who had replaced me. Directly above his head, a line of emerald green text made my heart cold to freezing point.
It reads "Gate Guard Jeffritz Kidd," and not so long ago, it was my name.
This is simply ridiculous, why did the label of my soul actually hit his head?
Could it be that he is the real me?
If he is me, then who am I?
I hurriedly raised my head, and above my head, I found my soul
There is a name written there:
"Jeffritz Kidd"!
The truth is that I'm no longer – or never have been – the gate guard Jeffritz Kidd, despite our similarities. I am a completely different person, my life is not tied to the foot of a certain section of the wall, and my soul is not subordinate to this thick and rough gate.
I'm a brand new person!
For the first time in my life, I discovered: I am free! I don't have to deal with endless questions and requests and repeat over and over again the words that I have repeated countless times.
"Get out of here and go somewhere else!" The thought came out of my mind and scared myself. Leave? For as long as I can remember, I have never left the foot of this wall. I've never had the idea, not even a thought about it. But now, this thought is churning in my heart, and I can't contain it.
"Leave, leave, leave...... Go somewhere else, go somewhere else, go somewhere else......" My mind was occupied by the voice of temptation, and my heart was both excited and a little nervous. Driven by this voice, I tried to stretch my legs and take the first step out of my post.
When my feet set foot on another piece of land, my heart felt like it was about to explode.
Can you imagine it? Ever since you can remember, you've been stuck in a narrow area less than three paces square, and you can only see the world less than two hundred steps from a fixed angle. But all of a sudden, you can decide where you want to go, what you want to do, do whatever you want, and see the world from a myriad of completely different perspectives. Your world has grown bigger, infinitely larger!
I can't describe how happy it was.
I cheered almost presumptuously on the spot, and if it weren't for anyone else, I would have done it. Just as I was regaining my soul, a part of the air around me suddenly became distorted. Thin figures emerged from these distorted air, from looming shadows to vivid and solid.
These are the Skywaders, and every time they appear, they have such a strange sight. In that terrible darkness, they did not know which strange plane they had taken refuge into. Now, they're back here one after another.
I felt a little abrupt standing next to someone who looked exactly the same. Before the plane-travelers had fully descended, I took a closer look around and walked towards the woods outside the city......
Before learning about this strange world, I thought I should know a little bit more about myself. I rummaged through myself and wondered what would help me on my journey.
I had a rucksack, which wasn't very big and didn't weigh much to lift. But when I opened it, I found that there were already quite a few things inside. I guess this rucksack has some kind of magic, it can hold about two hundred pounds of items without adding any weight.
In my backpack, I found a map. I'm all too familiar with this picture, it's an aerial view of Campunavia. When I was a gatekeeper, I marked the thousands of seekers who didn't know the way. In the center of this map, there is a blue bright spot. At first, I didn't know what this point meant, but as I walked and looked at the picture, I noticed that the bright spot was also moving in the direction I was heading. It didn't take long for me to confirm that the highlight sign was exactly where I was. It seems that there are some useful magic effects attached to this map, and I believe it will be useful to me.
There is also a mirror in the backpack. I took it out and took a picture of it, and found that it didn't show my face, but a long list of instructions and data:
Jeffritz Kidd, Tier 1, Human, Warrior. Strength 15, Intelligence 9-2, Agility 12-2, Health 180/180, Fighting Energy 90/90.
Attack 15+2, Defense 15+4.
Race Trait: Stoic, Defense automatically increases by 100% when health is reduced to 5%.
Philistines, trading and character rewards can be obtained more and spend 5% less money,
An all-rounder who can learn skills from three other professions.
Combat skills: straight stab, slash, block
Life Skills: None
I think this should be a mirror that directly illuminates the soul, which eliminates the image of life, extracts the most original thing of a person and directly restores it to a concrete number, so that we can understand ourselves more clearly.
In addition to these, I have a journal. I flipped it open and saw that there was already a line written on it. That line reminds me: Kill the three wild dogs and deliver the skins to Sheriff Gerald's office.
I remember that when the "real me" at the gate told me about the robbers, I seemed to vaguely agree. It seems that this journal can automatically help me keep track of the tasks I have accepted. I believe that this is also the effect of some kind of magic, and the person who created this practical magic is amazing.
A backpack, a map, a mirror, a diary, these four things seem to be something that everyone has. I've often seen the space-waders who move between planes fiddling with them. In addition to these things, I also have a small bundle of Moon Soul Grass in my backpack. It must have been picked for a short time, and its leaves were tender and soft, with tiny blue flowers blooming on it.
I pondered for a long time before I remembered where this thing came from. That's what the merchant who was in a hurry to trade gave me by mistake before that darkness fell. It is a very common herb that can be made into various potions after a simple refinement. But it didn't work for me, because I didn't know anything about refining medicines. I casually threw it back in my backpack and didn't bother with it.
All that's left is my clothes. Through the Soul Mirror, I found that my Iron Helmet increased my defense by 1 but reduced my Intelligence by 2 - I understood this very well, this Iron Helmet was small and narrow, and it was very inappropriate, and it was so tightly stuffed that I almost suffocated. In such a situation, no one can really concentrate on thinking. The copper inlay armor on my body increases my defense by 2, but reduces my agility by 1 - I think it's a bit heavy. The same goes for my boots, although they increase my defense by 1, the heavy weight also reduces my agility by 1.
The most valuable thing I have on me is probably the standard sword issued by the guards at the city gate. It looks ordinary, practical and sharp, increases my attack power by 2 points, and doesn't have any side effects.
All of the above, plus 50 coppers in my money bag, is all my possessions. The great joy I had at first being freed had now subsided, and I suddenly felt a little dazed. I'm used to being stuck in the cramped post at the gates where one person can stand, and I've been content with the stylized boredom of life. Now, you suddenly make me decide what I do, change my life, and where should I go?
I suddenly realized that my freedom had come too quickly and too strongly, and I was not ready to meet it.
The world, which was still bright and beautiful, suddenly became terrifyingly empty in my eyes. Ironically, I didn't hesitate to take the first step of a new life, and I was afraid to take that second step. Countless paths and destinies are presented to me, but I have no choice.
Just as I stood on the spot, deeply troubled by my unknown future, a miserable and terrifying scream suddenly came from ahead:
“…… Help me! ”
