Volume 1 The Stone of the Philosophers Chapter 8 The First Story
"It's a story that seems absurd to outsiders, and I don't expect you to believe it, after all, I doubt that I actually experienced it."
"That was when I was still working as a detective, and I worked with the National Police Agency on a case in which the suspect was a middle-aged man who was accused of killing his wife, but he firmly denied it, claiming that his wife had just gone back to the countryside."
"We investigated her wife's home, and her parents said they hadn't seen their daughter for a month, and that their daughter had been injured when she came back several times before, accusing their son-in-law of domestic violence."
"We were a little surprised because this man seemed so docile that his neighbors would even laugh at him for being weak-hearted, and that he didn't look like a man who would commit violence against his close lover."
"It's a little strange that the two old men seem to know me, and they glance at me, intentionally or unintentionally, when they explain the situation to the detective in charge."
"I felt as if they had something to say to me, so I decided to visit myself later."
"That night was our last examination of the man, and at that time we had not found his wife's body, and the man would have been acquitted if there was no evidence."
"The agent in charge gave him some special 'care', and he finally changed his attitude and told us a story."
Here's what he told us about the case: "
"This man said that he was very fond of animals since he was a child, and after marrying his wife, they had a black cat together..."
"He is very good to the black cat, and the black cat will always be by his side."
"Later, he developed a problem with alcoholism, and he began to become moody and punched and kicked his wife."
"Hearing this, I pulled my tie because I also have a habit of alcoholism, and even a few times I have drunk immorality, and every time I think about it, I feel a little ashamed."
The man continued. He said that one night, he came home drunk, feeling that the black cat was deliberately avoiding him, and that the power of the alcohol made him angry. ”
So, he grabbed the black cat, took a knife out of the pocket of his vest, and gouged out the black cat's left eye.
"I suddenly felt a little nauseous and had some headaches, and the detective next to me handed me a cigarette, which he said would help me with relief."
"I took a few puffs of the cigarette, and the smell of the cigarette was very special, and my discomfort did disappear very quickly."
"Seeing that I am back to normal, the detective motioned for the man to continue."
He said he woke up the next day feeling very guilty, even a little scared. The black cat's eyeballs were horrible, and they fled in a hurry at the sight of him. ”
"Every time he saw the black cat, he felt like it was reminding him of the crimes he had committed, which made him more and more tired and miserable."
"Finally, one night, he could no longer endure this torture, and anger and madness broke through his sanity, and he hanged the black cat from a tree in the yard."
"I took a few big puffs again."
"After that, a sudden fire destroyed his house, but fortunately he and his wife were fine."
In the ruins of the fire, he found a relief pattern on the wall.
"It was in the shape of a big cat, and strangely, there was a mark on the top of the big cat's neck, like a noose wrapped around it."
"He was so frightened that he couldn't erase the cat's illusion for months."
"Then one day, when he was drunk at a bar, he found another black cat, which was exactly the same as the dead one except for a clump of white hair on its chest."
"He took him home full of joy, but he was surprised to find that his left eye had also been gouged out, and he began to feel frightened, and every time the black cat made out with him, he wanted to strangle it."
"And his wife fell in love with the cat, and they began to become inseparable."
A week later, he was surprised to find that the white fur on the black cat's chest had turned into a pattern.
"A pattern of a gallows."
"Fear began to surround him, and he woke up from nightmares countless times."
"Finally, one night, he broke down, and he raised an axe and hacked the black cat to death along with his wife, who was holding him back."
"After the killing, he dug a pit in the yard and buried the bodies of his wife and the black cat in it."
"Maybe it's the detective's instinct, and I vaguely sense that there's something wrong with his narrative, but I just can't think of it."
"I covered my head, trying to figure it out, but in a trance I saw the suspect on the other side, and the police detective next to me, staring at me silently, their expressions like beasts about to eat raw meat."
"I shook my head and came back to my senses, the detective had already sent people to the yard of the suspect's house to look for the body."
"I went with them, and we came to the courtyard, and sure enough, in the northwest corner of the courtyard we found new excavation marks, which was a dirt pit."
"We thought the case was about to be solved, but we only found a blood-stained dagger and some blood-stained black cat hair in the dirt pit."
"Something is wrong! I felt like the truth was in my head, but there seemed to be an eye staring at me that I didn't have time to think about it. ”
"I was going to visit the old couple again, but the headache hit me again, and I had to go back to my own home."
"As soon as I got home, I poured a large glass of rum and drank it in one gulp, and the paralyzing effect of the alcohol quickly weakened the headache, but it also made me groggy."
"I sat on the sofa and looked in the direction of the window, the curtain of flannel had been drawn, but I always felt that someone was peeking in through the window, and I hated it, so I pulled open a hidden plank on the floor of the living room and went down to the cellar."
"This is where I put my wine, and almost no one knows about it, and no one will come, except my wife."
"I woke up a little bit for a moment. Do I have a wife? Why don't I have any impression of her? ”
"Looking at the neatly arranged bottles in the cellar and the labels with the origin and production date written by hand, I realized that this was not my handwriting."
"Something suddenly occurred to me, the man said that he had hacked his wife and cat to death with an axe, but in that pit was a dagger!"
"But why weren't the detectives surprised by the dagger in the slightest? Why didn't anyone raise an objection? ”
"I heard a lot of heavy footsteps on the floor overhead, and my brain started to get confused, where was that axe... Hatchet... Axe..."
"I covered my head and saw an old axe lying on the floor, rusty with some dark red marks on it. I bent down to pick it up and staggered towards the opposite wall. ”
"The color of that wall is very different from the surroundings, it looks like it is newly built, I am indeed drunk, vague memories flashed in my mind, eyes, noose, bloodstains..."
"My head hurts again, more than ever."
I began to scream in pain, smashing the axe in my hand against the wall in front of me.
"And as I slashed, a child-like cry began to sound in the walls, and soon it turned into a constant scream, a wild laugh, a scream, like a sound from hell."
"I grew frantic and made a big hole in the wall."
"In that mouth, a corpse with a high degree of decay and clotted blood stood there, and on the head of the corpse sat a large black cat with a large mouth of blood and an empty eye socket."
