Chapter 8 Fields
What's that, a berry, or a radish root?
Lu Ning twisted his body and pressed down as hard as he could, reaching for the flower and grass under the rock.
With a stabbing thud, his sleeve was torn by a stone, and the only communication between the two pieces of cloth on the front and back of his shirt was completely separated, and a cool air came from his side into his clothes.
Lu Ning shuddered. It took a long time for the cool air to be slowly dispelled by the warmth of the redstone.
Lu Ning glanced at it and shook his head helplessly.
This dress can basically be regarded as nominal, and the slightest warmth is completely gone.
When I have the resources to go back, I have to find an opportunity to make up for it, and as for today, I guess I have to go back to the camp early.
Lu Ning no longer cared about the clothes on his body, and reached down hard, shifting his weight towards the rock under his feet.
"There it is!"
Lu Ning lowered his body, decisively copied down, and finally held the stems and leaves of the plant in his hand. He steadied himself and lifted upwards with all his might.
Whoop -
A cloud of snow mixed with stones under his feet slid down, and Lu Ning didn't know if it was because the snow under him was too thick or because the wind in the canyon was too loud, but he couldn't hear the echo for a long time.
But he himself was frightened enough by this moment, and hurriedly put his body on the stone wall. However, he soon realized that what had slipped down was only a small piece of rubble on the edge of the protruding rock, and that there was no danger of shattering in itself.
Lu Ning breathed a sigh of relief and looked at the plant in his hand.
This look surprised Lu Ning.
The plant is no more than two feet long, but the leaves of the grass are clear and green, and they are delicate. The top of the leaf has an orange flower top, and under the leaf droops three or four fiery red fruits the size of a ping-pong ball, shaped like a lantern.
Lantern Grass Fruit, this is the name Lu Ning gave him.
This thing Lu Ning has seen - in fact, this is a very common plant.
But Lu Ning had only seen it frozen to death, but rarely saw a lantern plant that bore fruit.
And more importantly, this plant blooms in such a cold and windy place, but it is alive!
A lantern plant fruit that has survived the cold disaster that swept the world and is still very vigorous!
Are there any other surviving lanterns around here?
Lu Ning cautiously looked down, but saw that there was an empty place under the cliff, except for the wind and snow and bare rocks, and there was no second plant with the same kind.
Lu Ning soon realized that this lantern plant was probably a very special specimen - and probably the only one in his range that could grow in the cold wind.
Gotta bring this back to camp!
Lu Ning quickly made up his mind, carefully tucked the lantern plant into the elastic band around the waist of his pants, and then climbed back to the top of the cliff the same way.
……
Lu Ning sat in front of the campfire, with many more scratches on his body than when he set off, his pants were torn in several places, and his clothes were already two tattered strips of cloth - but he still thought his trip was well worth it.
He was nervously awaiting the ghost's reply.
The ghost didn't keep him waiting long.
"Scanned. The plant specimen is indeed very vigorous, and despite the fact that its roots have been detached from the soil and broken in several places, it is still absorbing some kind of energy that is unknown to the vicinity. The ghost said.
"Unknowable energy? Could it be that the aura of heaven and earth or the magic of the elements is not successful? When Lu Ning heard this, he was a little puzzled.
"There are no similar records in the database, so there is no way to infer them." The ghost returns, and then proceeds to report:
"The fruit of this sample...... It is edible and poses no life-threatening threat to the captain. The seeds of this plant can germinate and grow under the current temperature conditions, and the growth cycle is extremely short, and it is expected to complete the process from germination to fruit ripening in only two to three weeks, and other properties are unknown.
"The ship's scan results have been reported, above."
The ghost said quickly.
Although there seemed to be a pause in the ghost's tone when he said "edible", Lu Ning didn't notice the slight anomaly, but was overshadowed by a huge surprise.
A perfect plant that could grow in the current low temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius, with edible fruits, and ripened in less than a month – which meant he could finally ......
Seed! Field! Finish!
I can finally get rid of the current life of only daring to eat once a day and only daring to be 60% full at each meal!
Lu Ning suddenly woke up from his stupid face imagining the future, and his eyes when he looked at this lantern plant suddenly became extremely hot.
"This is a baby, don't go wrong......"
Lu Ning counted, and there were only three fruits hanging on this lantern plant, which was not a lot.
"In order to be able to eat enough in the future, I can only endure it now, and this time I won't keep it for food, and plant it all."
Lu Ning carefully took the lantern plant to a place a little further away from the campfire, and then took out all the tools he had built these days to dig a small pit in the frozen soil.
"Hmm...... I didn't notice it before, but the soil here is unexpectedly quite good, but it's just a little frozen porcelain. ”
Lu Ning turned the clumps of soil with stone chips, these soils are dark in color, fine in particles, and the soil is fine and dense, making it very good land for planting.
He felt like he was playing some kind of strategy game right now, with a hexagonal lattice under his feet, and he himself was the peasant unit.
Just when playing the game, he only needs to click on the grid and select "Improve Field" to complete the remodeling with a hoe, and now he has to spend a lot of physical strength and patience with a pile of stone chips, bone awls, and hand axes to complete the soil bit by bit.
Finally, before sunset, Lu Ning successfully turned over the piece of soil, and then dug many small pits.
Lu Ning then carefully placed the plant in one of the pits and refilled it with soil.
Then Lu Ning turned to the second pit, took a fruit and put it inside, and filled it with new soil - but when the fill was halfway through, Lu Ning suddenly thought of something.
He reminisced, then ran to the other side of the dilapidated house, and retrieved something from the snow that he had forgotten for a long time.
An expired loaf of bread that had been buried in the snow for a long time.
Of course, he didn't take it to eat—but it occurred to him that there wasn't a little bird droppings on this bread......
Maybe, maybe, maybe...... As fertilizer?
He didn't know if it would work, and he wouldn't have tried anyway—so he chopped up the bread with his axe, and buried it all in the ground, along with the fruit.
On top of that, he'd taken out all the unknown seeds he'd found before—which he had intended to use as backups. If the berries are finished, the seeds should last for a day or two when roasted.
He had never thought about the use of keeping these seeds in such temperatures other than eating.
But the lantern plant he found this time opened his mind, so he took out all the seeds and asked the ghost to test them with the ship's high technology.
The end result was very encouraging: six of the twenty-five seeds had a high probability of germinating in this climate.
So Lu Ning planted these six seeds into the soil as well.
Lu Ning looked up, the cold wind was howling, and the clouds were heavy, very similar to the day he had just landed.
After all was done, Lu Ning finally straightened up and bent his waist for a long time, and then half of his body went into the warm tent with only his head exposed, and roasted rabbit meat on the campfire to eat.
Not far behind Lu Ning's tent, a verdant plant swayed in the wind, and a thin layer of snow had been laid on several barely visible dirt pits.
Not only does it not look like a field at all, but it looks more like a weed growing on the ground.
But it's the second thing that has life in the camp.
And what lies beneath the soil will soon sprout.
