Chapter 29: Off-plot encounters
Egger was stunned, utterly stunned, even more so than he had watched Bran fall in front of his eyes—neither in the novel nor in the TV series, he could remember what attack Bunyan Stark had encountered on his way back to the Wall from Winterfell. Was it coming at them, did Jaime and Cersei send someone to kill them, or did the Starks find out they were lying and caught themselves?
It shouldn't be.
Stunned for a second, the soldier's instinct made him react, and he drew his steel sword with the same bang, protecting Tyrion's two guards behind him before they could react. This short Lannister, but his hope of leaving the Wall: "My lord, you hide quickly!"
"Lord Bunyan, come out quickly, I'll cover you!" One of the rapist recruits was unlucky enough to be shot in the shoulder and rolled on the ground screaming, and Yoren shoved the skinning knife into the hands of the other recruit and yelled at him, "If you don't want to die, just follow me!"
The curtain of the tent was lifted, the chief ranger came out with his weapon in hand, and figures rushed out of the darkness on all sides, screaming and killing the camp, and from the sparse arrows and flying stones, he quickly analyzed the identity of the attacker: "It's a savage......! Damn, it's too late, everyone retreats to the stone wall, ready to engage!"
The two Lannister guards were supposed to obey Tyrion's orders, but instinctively obeyed Stark's command in the same panic as their master, and the group of nine huddled back to back with each other to the old stone wall against which the tent rested, and surrounded a wounded man and a Lannister in the middle, with serious and nervous expressions ready to meet the enemy.
"Aren't the wildlings on the north side of the Wall?" Tyrion hunched his neck unaristocraticly behind the two tall men, Egg and Jon, unable to see what was going on. The traverser was relieved to find out who his enemies were, while the bastards were thrilled to be given the chance to show off their skills so soon. Conversely, the two Lannister guards were both dressed in full armor, but only one behaved like a soldier. "No one told me the north was so dangerous!"
"Occasionally, a small group of wild men will climb over the Great Wall, but rarely will they go deep into the wolf forest......
"Can you give me something to use as a weapon, I don't have anything to defend myself against!"
"No, it's coming!"
There were no heralds, no flags, no drums or trumpets, not even swords, and the wildlings who rushed towards them were mostly wooden sticks and stone spears and axes......
Such a rabble of wild men, even if they were superior in numbers, should not be bold enough to attack such a team of nine people with the existence of the Night Watch, what made them do this?
There was no time to think about it, and the enemy came with a bang. The wildlings were ragged and scrawny, wearing a patchwork of hard leather or ill-fitting tattered armor, none of them even having helmets.
The Night's Watch was ready for a bloody battle, but as soon as they exchanged hands, Iger sensed that something was wrong, and although about ten savages in front of him rushed to surround them with shouts and shouts, none of them really rushed to the crowd to fight them, but stood two meters away, shouting and waving all kinds of weapons in their hands, but they defended more and attacked less, and did not seem to want their lives at all. Not only that, but there were also several wild men who were obviously female, following the men, and began to loot everyone's things with their hands and feet, even the squirrel that Yulun had not yet skinned......
The young and vigorous Jon took the initiative to attack, but was stopped by two guys with wooden shields, and several swords only left marks on the wooden boards, and was soon called back by the chief ranger who was worried about his nephew's safety.
If it was just for the property, the people didn't escort any important items anyway, so they couldn't do their best to let them take it.
With such a thought, the weapons of the two sides played with each other tentatively, and after a stalemate of only a few dozen seconds, Yu Lun was the first to notice that something was wrong: "Their target is a horse!"
Bunyan looked back in horror, and sure enough, he saw several figures sneakily approaching the horses that everyone was leading not far away, cutting the ropes one by one.
Stark suddenly realized, his face was angry, in the case of the declining army of the Night's Watch, war horses are more scarce support than people, no longer worried about the lives of his subordinates, he waved his steel sword: "Stop them!"
Egger and Yolun, as night watch soldiers and Bunyan's subordinates, were naturally the first to respond, and they followed the commander to rush towards the enemy, tearing apart the opponent's loose formation at once. Then there was Jon and the Lannister guard named Jack, and the tide of battle turned in an instant, and the crowd that had been forced to shrink together at first rushed forward after a shout, and as Bunyan slashed down a man with a clean sword with Egger's cooperation, the originally imposing savages scattered like frying pans, and some even threw down their weapons and the planks that served as shields, and rushed into the darkness without looking back.
This is a very familiar "battle" that Egger has participated in since joining the Night's Watch, except for the one where the killing of the strangers is really thrilling, the rest is just following the Rangers to drive away the wildlings who are too close to the Wall. The pursued residents of the outside of the Saiwai also ran in this way, and countless bloody facts proved that none of those who dared to turn back and resist could escape from the standard steel sword......
The chief ranger's order sounded loudly: "Poor Kou Mo chase, protect the horse first!"
The two Night's Watch soldiers followed the commander closely, and it took only a few seconds to rush to the edge of the tree where the horses were being led. The savages outside the encirclement took advantage of the short minute that everyone was besieged, and had already cut many ropes leading the horses, and took away many horses by way or on horseback.
Most of these horses were gifts from the Northern Lords to the Night's Watch, and Egg and Yoron, members of the Blackcoats, might have a chance to ride them...... As the three heavily armed and darkened Night's Watch approached, the nearest horse thief shouted at his companions, abandoned the remaining horses, and plunged into the woods with the loot already in hand.
The rest of the men didn't have the ability to execute orders so well, and the recruits and Tyrion cautiously stayed where they were, while Jon and the Lannister guards named Jack yelled and chased after the enemy, catching up and cutting down two of them in succession, before they stopped their pursuit and returned to camp without finishing their pursuit.
......
The freshly cooked broth leaked out of the ground due to the iron pot being shot, and the aroma was overflowing, and everyone's temporary station was in shambles. A few loaves of bread that had been taken out and placed on the table to be eaten were missing, a dead squirrel was carried away by a female savage, and a piece of clothing and an iron spoon that had been inserted in the pot were missing...... And many more bits and pieces, inconsequential.
If you don't count the horses, they have little to lose.
"Why did they take my books, God, are there any literate among the wildlings?" said Tyrion, jumping to his feet, "Forget about the rest, I borrowed it from the library of Winterfell!"
"I'm afraid they don't even know what the book is, but they can't help but walk away just by looking at it. Iger expressed regret, "Nine times out of ten, it was turned into a fire starter, or it was torn off one by one to wipe his buttocks." ”
"Do you want to chase?" Yu Lun's face was gloomy, and he looked even more fierce: "Eight horses are missing." ”
"That's fourteen horses left. Bunyan frowned, and after thinking about it, there were about twenty men and women on the other side, and if he wanted to pursue or kill them all, it was definitely not enough to rely on only three night watchmen, and there was probably an ambush in the woods, so he could only shake his head and refuse the Raven's proposal.
An inexplicable attack ended with Egger being the fourth time he had fought a wildling, and the first time he had been passively attacked, but as with the previous three times, there were no casualties among the Night's Watch.
The difference in combat effectiveness and quality between professional soldiers and peasants is so huge that it is like a wolf and a sheep - in theory, a flock of sheep can unite to kill a wolf, but in practice no sheep would dare to slow down a step because of this ethereal possibility. As long as they didn't panic, even if they had the advantage of being the first move, the savages could only withdraw from the battlefield in disarray after dropping three corpses...... Had it not been for Bunyan's eagerness to keep the remaining horses, the results would have been much more than that.
Only one recruit who had not yet officially joined was unlucky enough to be hit in the first round of sparse rain of arrows, but fortunately, the savages did not have strong bows, and the quality of the arrows was extremely poor - they used stone arrows that did not even have barbs, and only had to pull out the arrows to disinfect the wounds, which could only be regarded as skin wounds.
For Jon, Tyrion, and his two guards who had never fought in a real war, repelling a sneak attack at the cost of zero for three was undoubtedly a big victory, and for Egger, his own safety was more important than anything else, but Bunyan Stark felt extremely ashamed that Castle Black, which had not many military horses, had been stolen by a group of wild men who had crossed the Wall, and had never suffered such a big loss since he joined the Night's Watch.
What the attack meant was more important than the loss of the horses: the savages were speeding south, the situation north of the Great Wall was clearly deteriorating, and the next patrol had to be organized as soon as possible to determine the situation.
