Chapter 6: The Strongman

On July 7, 1937, the Lugou Bridge Incident broke out, and thus began an eight-year anti-Japanese battlefield. If we calculate carefully, in fact, the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression lasted for 14 years, starting on September 18, 1931 and ending on September 2, 1945.

The War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was the most painful and great war against aggression in the history of the Chinese nation.

The Songhu War of Resistance was the prelude to China's all-out War of Resistance.

Back on July 7, 1937.

Location: Shanghai.

Shanghai, at that time was a famous international metropolis in the Far East, with a population of 3 million, there were more than 50 countries of expatriates settled here, among the settlers, the Japanese were the largest, accounting for more than half of the foreigners in Shanghai, they mainly gathered in the public concession and cross-border road construction zone in the Hong Kong area of Shanghai, therefore, the Hongkou area is also called 'Little Tokyo'.

This day is definitely a festive day for Shanghai, because this day is the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Shanghai Municipal Government.

Then on the night of this day, the Japanese army launched an incident at Lugou Bridge on the outskirts of Beiping, and then bombarded Wanping City, and the full-scale war of aggression against China began.

In July, when the 'Lugou Bridge Incident' broke out, the Japanese Marine Corps increased its troops, built fortifications, and conducted exercises day and night in various key transportation areas in Hongkou, Shanghai, causing panic among the people. The Japanese expatriates along the Yangtze River began to evacuate, and the Chinese people living in the Chinese border in Shanghai also entered the concession to take refuge.

Shanghai is already stormy.

Interestingly, since the September 18 Incident, Japan has stationed a marine corps in Shanghai, and they often provoke incidents for various reasons, in fact, from this time, Japan's wolf ambitions have been exposed.

In 1932, the Japanese Navy created the 128 Incident in Shanghai, and its troops raided the Zhabei area in three ways. At that time, there were troops of the national army in Shanghai, which was the 19th Route Army, and the 19th Route Army rose up to resist and swore to defend Shanghai. The Shanghai battlefield endangered the capital Jianye, so the bald head sent the Fifth Army of the Central Army to the Songhu battlefield to support the 19th Route Army.

The 128 Incident ended with the victory of the Nationalist Army, which was mainly composed of the 87th and 88th Divisions of the 19th Route Army and the 5th Army.

However, the subsequent "Songhu Armistice Agreement" stipulated that Shanghai was designated as a demilitarized zone, and the Japanese army returned to the pre-war defense area in Hongkou and other places, while the Chinese troops were to withdraw from Shanghai and were not allowed to be stationed in Shanghai.

With the beginning of the July 7 Incident and the fall of Beiping and Tianjin one after another, the Japanese Army attacked the Nankou and the Great Wall Pass along the route, intending to rapidly advance along the three lines of Jinpu, Pinghan, and Pingsui and attack Chinese mainland in a big way.

On the second day of the Lugou Bridge Incident, the Chinese GC Party issued a telegram to the whole country: Pingjin is in danger, North China is in danger, and the Chinese nation is in danger.

He proposed that only by carrying out the national war of resistance can China find the way out. The united front of the anti-Japanese nation has been the consistent stand of the Red Party since the September 18 Incident.

On July 15, the bald head delivered a speech in Lushan.

If the war starts, it will be that there is no distinction between north and south, no distinction between people old and young, no matter who they are, they all have the responsibility to defend the land and resist the war, and they are all determined to sacrifice everything. Only by sacrificing to the end, fighting to the end, and only with the determination to sacrifice can we win the final victory. ’

In the Central Plains in August, the heat wave formed by the scorching sun sprinkled on the loess land, like a huge oven, and the heat wave formed distorted the vision.

In the ditch and ditch of the ridge, more than a dozen scrawny and ragged village peasants sat on the ground, tied with a long rope tied to their bodies, and one of them was a big man who was leaning on a stone, and suddenly fell to the ground, his eyes rolling and his lips chapped.

The ranks suddenly rioted.

"Sir, give this baby a little water to drink, or else it will be a dead ball."

Sitting next to the big man was a man in his forties, thin with skin and bones, dark skin, dirty and curly hair, a coarse cloth waistcoat covered with patches of needlework and thread, and a thick tone of voice.

The team of ten people, all tied by ropes, escorted them by the receiving unit of the national army, five soldiers with sallow faces and guns on their backs, wearing grass-green uniforms, led by officers wearing helmets, white strips of cloth on their chests are chest markings, and military ranks are written on them.

"Forget the dead ball, what's the matter." The commander of the receiving unit stepped forward, kicked the big man lying on the ground with his foot, and said nonchalantly.

Their trip was a conscription, saying that they were going to recruit soldiers, but in fact they were going to pick up strong men. These strong men are all cannon fodder who are about to be sent to the battlefield and go to the front line to block the Japanese army, what does life and death have to do with them.

The commander of the receiving unit touched the silver dollars in his pocket, and his mouth smiled crookedly, these silver dollars are the food and clothing expenses of these strong men, and if there is one less person, there will be less clothing expenses, and if there is food expenses, he will earn a penny of clothing and food expenses.

Therefore, more than anyone else, he hoped that these strong men would quickly die balls, and they were all dead, so that some of these silver dollars would go into his pocket.

Why is it said that it is a part, because the food and clothing expenses allocated to him for these strong men have been deducted layer by layer.

Since the end of the first KMT-CCP cooperation and the beginning of the White Terror, the bald head has destroyed the basic framework of the people that Mr. Sun has worked so hard to build, and the bald head has suddenly lost control of the grassroots, and the final result is that the countryside is occupied by landlords and bullies.

As the war on the front line began to tighten and the consumption of soldiers was huge, conscription began to be organized in various places.

At that time, the scope of exemption stipulated in the "Military Service Law" of the state government was too large, and as many as 23 groups of people, such as public education personnel, intellectuals, school students, and technical employees of industry, mining, and so on, could refuse or postpone military service, and it was also stipulated that they could pay for military service, which directly violated the principle of equality for all in military service and seriously reduced the military base.

As a result, the pressure of conscription was concentrated in the countryside at once.

However, the state government has lost control over the grassroots, and conscription can only be handed over to the localities, and the localities can be handed over to the landlords and bullies in the villages, while the squires engage in personal fraud, and the children of the rich landlords and peasants do not actually need to perform military service, and the burden of military service falls entirely on the poor peasants.

Conscription was handled by the feudal chief and chief, and in the countryside at that time, the positions of the chief and the chief were controlled and controlled by the landlords and bullies.

Conscription directly becomes the capture of strong men.

Even in the process of drawing lots for conscription, various forces manipulated the lots, making the conscription unfair.

The deduction of food and clothing expenses made the strong man unable to get any guarantee for three meals a day, and even ate less than the starving soldiers, and sometimes he could not even drink a sip of water.

They were denied food, they were forced to travel, they died of starvation, there were too many sick and dead, and the bodies of the dead men could be left there for a few days, and in many areas, the number of strong men who finally reached the front line was less than 20 percent of the total number of enlistments.

They are often poisoned by escort platoon commanders and military service chiefs, and they are not treated even if they are injured, allowing their wounds to become inflamed, rot, and eventually die.

As a result, the number of officers and soldiers needed at the front line was far from the standard.

For example, the Sixth Theater of Operations, which defended Chongqing, had 17 divisions under its command, but the shortage was as high as 40,000 troops, and even the Chinese Expeditionary Force, which was highly concerned by American advisers, could not achieve complete fullness, and all units could only go abroad to fight if they were not fully staffed.

On the one hand, he hopes to expand the army by conscription, and on the other hand, he also hopes to refresh the national spirit with militarized training.

However, things always backfire.

In response to the various tragedies that happened to the Zhuang Ding, the bald head also issued various instructions many times to protect and improve the treatment of the Zhuang Ding, and even carried out micro-manipulation to the point of very detail.

He once stipulated: "Recruits should have at least mats and straw mats, two inches thicker, and clothing, and should prepare three meals of rice and tea every day, and should also prepare porridge on the way when marching." ”

However, the money that was allocated was deducted by the commanders of each class, and the last silver dollar used on the strong man had to be continued to be deducted by the people who escorted the strong man's receiving unit.

In 1944, Jiang Menglin, then president of the Red Cross Society of China, wrote a report after inspecting the recruitment of Zhuangding in Nanyun, Nanhu, and Xiguang:

"Along the way, I saw outdated and strong men, skinny as wood, or lying on the side of the sick road and dying; or like a walking corpse, staggering on the mountain road; Or fall to the side of the road and let the dog chew. What you see and hear, if you hide it and don't say it, you really have the knowledge of the negative throne. ”

"There are 300 strong men in Shaoguan, and there are only 27 people left in Zhizhu. There were 1,800 people from Jiangxi, and only about 150 people were left in Zhizhu. There are 1,000 people from Longtan District, and only more than 100 people are left in Zhizhu. ”

"On the road to Xiangxi and Xiguang, I have repeatedly seen wild dogs competing for the corpses of strong men who have been thrown away due to death. In some places, the strong men were buried, but they were buried too hastily, often exposing one leg or one foot on the ground, and some seemed to be still twitching over there, probably not completely dead. ”

Outside Yanggui City, there is a place where a strong man passes by, because there are too many abandoned corpses, and the air is filled with a strong stench."

Those who make it to camp alive think they are safe, and hell has just begun.

Many strong men made it to the training camp alive, but before they went to battle, they were tortured to death by officers or diseases.

A telegram from the Command Department of the Nationalist Army said, "According to Yun, the commander of a certain regiment of the Nationalist Army: 'Our soldiers are either fat or thin, and the thin are malnourished, and the fat are ...... It's not really fat, it's puffy. The whole regiment died every day, sometimes as many as twenty. ’”

In the camp, the strong man was already sick...... The prefect was indifferent, and ordered him to go on with the usual lessons. Occasionally, those who are unable to operate due to illness will be beaten with wooden sticks or flat poles at every turn, and every punishment will cause the flesh and blood of the strong men to fly, either dead or wasted. There are even those who have been shot dead for minor reasons, and there are also those who have been beaten to death or thrown into rivers and valleys due to illness during the march, which is extremely tragic in the world.

Zhou Jiantao, who was the commander of the Lu (Zhou) Division of SC Province at the time, said: "Zhuang Ding went to the division to supplement the regiment, and the treatment was not much better. In 1939, each strong man was required to have 22 taels of food per day, but many of the logistics officers of the Kuomintang troops were vicious exploiters. The rice is mixed with sand, and the large scale is weighed in, and the small scale is weighed out. Regiment-level cadres will be given a discount to the company, and the company-level cadres will be deducted again, and the strong men can only eat a dozen taels of brown rice with sand every day. ”

During the eight years of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, 15.88 million troops were conscripted, but only 11.78 million troops were actually replenished. According to the statistics of mainland scholars in later generations, the national army recruited a total of about 14 million strong men in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, but the front-line troops received only about 5 million additional soldiers, which means that 8 million people died and disappeared in the process of recruitment and escort.

When Xia Yuan woke up, he realized his environment and smiled bitterly.

was still a platoon commander in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and when he arrived here, he directly became a strong man.

The commander who received the troops saw Xia Yuan wake up, kicked with his foot, and sneered: "Dog's day back to Lao Tzu to pretend to be dead, give me a beating." ”

Three or four soldiers came up with guns and smashed Xia Yuan's body and head with the butt of the gun, his already weak body was even more unbearable, he held his breath, and silently remembered the appearance of these people in his heart, and when he recovered, he must kill them.

The group of people got tired and walked away with a curse in their mouths.

More than a dozen strong men squatted together, staring at Xia Yuan who was lying on the ground, and when these officers and soldiers left, a strong man pushed the people around him: "Old man Wang, go and see, Dasha should not be killed." ”

Old man Wang was the middle-aged man who first asked Xia Yuan for water, forty or fifty years old, but he looked like he was sixty or seventy years old, his face was full of wrinkles, the wrinkles were wrapped in black mud, and his body was covered with loess.

"Big stupid, big stupid."

Old man Wang shouted in a low voice, kicked Xia Yuan's leg with his foot, looked back at the strong men behind him, and saw that they were unreliable, so he squatted on the ground and groped forward, reaching out and grabbing Xia Yuan's foot.

Xia Yuan opened his eyes, looked down, and a memory came to mind. The predecessor was originally named Xia Yuan, a villager in Xiajia Village, and he was a bit stupid.

In 1937, after the outbreak of the Lugou Bridge Incident, the Japanese army attempted to destroy China within three months, and a full-scale war of aggression against China broke out.

There are more than 100 people, walking dozens of kilometers, and many people died along the way, and when they came here, there were only a dozen of them left, and these soldiers tied them up with ropes in order to prevent them from escaping, just like leading a group of cattle and sheep.

The dead were buried at random by the side of the passing road, and some were not even buried, but simply thrown into a barren grass.

Dasha also died on the road, but he crossed over by himself, and Dasha came back to life.
