Chapter 15: The Second Son (I)
Standing in the hall of the church, passing through the beautiful frescoes, looking up at the sculpture of the glorious cross on the pulpit, on which the dawn sun spreads, staining it with a layer of holy radiance. The black-haired boy even involuntarily felt a feeling of wanting to bow and worship.
Perhaps this is the common denominator of all religions - the accumulation of their connotations with the noblest words and the most mystical knowledge, the infection and shock of people's hearts with their environment and atmosphere, and finally the belief that even they themselves are true of this qiΔ. As he prayed with his hands folded in his heart, Edward thought sarcastically.
In the early morning the church was empty, and there was not even a person. Isolated in front of the statue of the Radiant Cross, Edward resembles a devout believer who has come early to finish his first prayer of the day.
"Edward?" Pushing open the door, Weber was a little surprised to see the familiar figure of the little priest, and then walked over very happily: "Are you here to pray, so early?"
"By the way, I stopped by to visit a friend. Edward smiled and looked at Webb behind him, and beckoned to the chair next to him: "While it's still early, are you interested in chatting with me?"
Weber was clearly not the same little priest he used to be, as could be seen from the clothes he wore aloneβa robe of coarse black cloth had been replaced by a delicate and soft white wool fabric, and the workmanship was much more refined than before, and light calfskin boots, a clean light-colored shirt underneath the robe, and a thick copy of the Glorious Proverbs in his hand.
If you have to compare it, Weber Alexander is now more like a priest of the Glorious Cross, the barracks and the church are the most hierarchical places in the whole world, and how the status can be recognized at a glance by the way he dresses - it is obvious that the "miracles" are enough to make the little priest favored by the bishop.
"Originally, as a freshman who had just finished my practice, I was not qualified to put on the formal attire of a priest, let alone stand in the pulpit and give lectures to the believers - even though it was only in the morning. Despite his restrained appearance, the little priest still had a look of intoxication on his face.
"Oh, that's a ...... Congratulations. β
"By the way, when are you going to return to the capital?" The elated Webber didn't hear what Edward said clearly, and raised his big eyes and asked with a smile, "I thought you were leaving today." β
"It may take a day or two for Lady Kwyn to invite me to be Sir Allen's squire for two days. Edward brought the subject back with him, and asked with a very casual look, "Can you tell me about this lady?"
"You mean Mrs. Angelica, she is a good person, she is very reliant, she often goes to the church to donate, even the almshouse in The Hague Harbour is maintained by Madame. Speaking of the lord's wife, the little priest seemed to have a good impression of her: "But...... Mistress Kwyn didn't like her very much, and didn't know why. β
"Is she rich?" Edward asked rhetorically, "It must cost a lot of money to maintain a harbour almshouse, right?"
"Of course, who doesn't know that Madame Angelica's father is the famous Marquis Holard Minest, who has been the king's Minister of the Interior for twelve years, and is also in charge of the kingdom's fleet. The little priest nodded as a matter of course: "Just back then, when Lord Kwyn married Lady Angelica, the whole Hague Fort was a sensation!"
"It would be nice if you were to be an errand boy for Sir Allen, Madame, who has always been generous, but beware of Lord Kwyn. Webber covered his mouth with his right hand and whispered in Edward's ear, "I heard the Bishop inadvertently say that after Sir Serra's death, Mistress Kwyn has been suspicious, and now Sir Alan is his only heir......
This kind of story of brothers killing each other for inheritance is not new in this world, and even simple people like Weber, who have barely left the church, are familiar to them.
"I'm sure the Bishop must have sued you, and you can't sue anyone else about this, right?" Edward glanced sideways at the little priest, and a playful smile curled up at the corner of his mouth, "Then why did you sue me?"
"Because I believe in you, I ...... I know I'm stupid to say that. Webb lowered his head, his face painted with the color of inferiority, and his eyes were confused: "But the Radiant Cross answered my prayer and let me survive to witness the miracle on you, so ...... I will never betray you, whether you consider me your friend or not!"
Edward's smile was even more playful, wasn't it? He had always felt that it was extremely incredible for a person to wholeheartedly believe in another person, and it was impossible for anyone, not even parents, to do this, because it was so degrading.
Or should we put it another way - what is the difference between believing wholeheartedly, believing in another person with all our hearts, and that person's slave?
"My dear Webber, what are you talking about?" Edward patted Webber on the shoulder with a gentle smile, "You are my best friend, I promised to protect you, I swore it!"
Looking at the little priest's excited cheeks with tears oozing from the corners of his eyes, the black-haired boy continued very casually: "Then according to your statement, no matter whether Lord Kwyn is happy or not, Sir Alan will inherit the Hague Castle?"
"This is inevitable, after all, Lord Kwyn has no other children, even if there is a certain bastard kingdom will not admit it, the only person who can inherit Fort Hague can only be Sir Allen. Webb nodded.
So that lady Angelica did have a reason to kill herself...... If she really had anything to do with that Aiden wizard, she naturally didn't want this matter to be revealed. Edward vaguely remembered the events of the previous night, when he bumped into his wife in that dark hallway.
She had been alone in such a dark place with her hands behind her back, maybe she had a dagger or something in her hand...... It is very unwise, but what a mother can do for her son is never something that mortals can guess lightly.
Just as the two of them were chatting, there seemed to be a slight sound of footsteps outside the church, and Edward indifferently got up from his chair and said goodbye to Webb with a smile: "Then dear Webber, it seems that it is time for you to work, and it is time for me to leave." β
"You're always welcome here, Edward. Holding the "Glorious Proverbs" in his arms, Weber nodded vigorously: "You can come to me at any time if you need it." β
The black-haired young man laughed and turned to leave. When he was about to walk to the door, he stopped with some hesitation and turned his eyes to the little priest on the pulpit: "Although it is only a building, it is best for you to return this honor of being able to give a lecture in the early morning to the bishop in public tonight." β
"Huh?" Webber was slightly stunned, although he didn't understand why, but he still nodded subconsciously: "I know." β
Not everybody is like you, Webb Alexander. How many people are burning with jealousy on that glorious step while you stand on that glorious step, trying to drag you down from it, and are you ready to fight?
It was already morning when he came out of the church, and Edward had not forgotten what he had promised Lady Angelica, and walked back to the castle along the road to the church entrance - although Edward was still unsure of what she wanted to do, it would not be so easy for the other party to kill him.
By the time he returned to the castle, Alan had already arrived. The young girl put on a somewhat tight leather armor and held a war bow, and after noticing Edward who was walking over, she did not hesitate to open her bow and shoot at him, with a sly smile on her face.
Edward's body tensed immediately, instinctively trying to turn sideways. But the expectant gaze in those eyes immediately made him suddenly realize, and then he drew his sword out of its sheath!
The shiny steel sword painted a golden light and shadow in the harsh morning sunlight. Only to hear the wind blowing, and the slender shaft of the arrow broke in two in mid-air, and fell at Edward's feet as if it were wailing.
Really...... The black-haired boy looked down slightly at the shaft of the broken arrow on the ground--this arrow had no arrow! Even if he didn't cut it down, it would fall in front of his feet like a paper airplane at most. If I had avoided it just now, it would have been a lot of fun.
"You're amazing, it's the first time I've ever seen someone cut down with a sword, and the knights are at best able to get out of the way. Excited, Sir Alan put his bow against the retinue next to the wooden target, jumped over, and patted Edward's shoulder gently: "I was a little worried when my mother told me, but it seems that I was thinking too much!"
"Lady Angelica?" Edward immediately became alert, but his face was still full of humility, and he asked cautiously pretending to be cautious, "Does she think so highly of me?"
"I don't know why, but Mother does admire you very much, saying that your sword skills are far beyond ordinary people, and dozens of ghouls are no match for you, let alone an arrow!" Allen's tone also carried a hint of joy for Edward: "But I still think something is not right - how can you use a weapon against infidels and devils to point at guests, it seems that I am thinking too much!"
In this person's thinking, he should be happy to be a little squire with no status, and he should be full of excitement and gratitude.
He couldn't see the malice hidden behind this arrow, and he couldn't think of it...... Edward showed a grateful expression, and replied indifferently: "No, no, no, it's also my honor to be able to see your kindness." β
