Chapter XXXV: Limited Investigation

The Russian army invested more troops, and one infantry company after another, armed with rifles, rushed to the Austrian positions one after another.

The deep woods were like a greedy maw devouring the lives of the Russians.

The Russian army was supposed to launch a more aggressive attack, but the 239th Regiment was still on the march, and a large number of troops were still on their way.

One of the battalions that arrived earlier took on the combat mission alone, with a meager force, launched a senseless attack, and the officers never thought about casualties, they would only act according to orders.

After 20 minutes of fighting, the Russian infantry battalion was incapacitated, they threw down five hundred corpses in front of the position, and the officers hurriedly evacuated with the remaining three hundred.

The 239 regiment gathered troops, which, judging by the fire of the Austrians, had at most only one battalion of troops.

There was a dull sound of artillery in the distance, and as soon as the Russians heard it, the shells exploded right next to them. These officers and soldiers stood in the wilderness, without any protection. Grenades exploded, powerful explosions and flying shrapnel caused tragic casualties.

The Russian soldiers were in disarray, and everywhere there were terrified yells and mournful moans. This time there was no need for the officer's order, and the soldiers spontaneously evacuated to the periphery. Soon, there was not a single person standing on the bombed land, there were dead bodies everywhere, and wounded soldiers who had been abandoned by their comrades and left to fend for themselves.

Taking advantage of the hasty withdrawal of the Russian army, the main force of the 133rd Regiment attacked. They had realized the power of tanks, and more than two dozen tanks opened the way, leading the infantry in pursuit. The Russians began to think only about attacking, and under the surprise attack, they had no position, and could only swarm and flee.

The command of the 239 regiment of the Russian army sent two telegrams in a row to the 8 Army. First, they reported that they had encountered at least one division of Austrian troops, because they had corps-sized artillery fire. Before the military headquarters could call back, they reported that the Austrians had dispatched armored vehicles, and that they had retreated and could not resist the enemy attack.

The 133rd Regiment pursued the Russian army by car, and the battle went on to this extent, in fact, it was more like a disarming. The Russian army did not have time to organize a defense, nor could it take advantage of the situation and run away.

The Russians happily surrendered, and in the event of a collapse of the organization and no chance of victory, everyone instinctively defended themselves.

The battle was not only easy, but also quick. By the time the Austro-Hungarian soldiers arrived at the rear by car, the Russian baggage units were still unloading ammunition from the wagon.

There was no suspense in the result, except for the more than 900 people who died in the battle at the beginning, the remaining 3,000 people surrendered voluntarily under the leadership of their regiment commander.

Rudolph was still walking on the road with his large army when he received the good news. He instructed the messenger to send this message to the 12th Army, the 2nd Army, and also sent an adjutant to hand over the prisoners and send them to the rear.

Rudolf ordered the troops to speed up and advance in the direction of Lemberg as soon as possible.

Within a day, the telegram of commendation from the group army headquarters arrived, and the commendation order from the Supreme Command also came. Even Archduke Ferdinand, who was at the High Command in Przemyśl at this time, sent a private message. The Crown Prince's message was in the tone of an elder, directly addressing Rudolph's former name, Franz.

Rudolph inquired about the battle order as usual, and the army group command told him to slow down the advance and defend on the spot.

Rudolph was taken aback, naturally assuming that the friendly troops had lost their hind legs and did not complete the scheduled mission. He hurriedly inquired about the situation in the rear.

Rudolph was relieved by the return call from the military headquarters, and all the ministries were fighting according to plan. The Russian Eighth Army deployed two corps, 7 and 12, on the frontal battlefield west of Lemberg. Rudolph has already cut through the line of defense of the 7th Army, and the 12th Army is engaged with the Russian 7th Army at the gap, and they will protect Rudolph's rear.

The Russian 12th Army is in the northern theater, and they are being surrounded by the 3rd Army, the 20th Division, the 43rd Division, and the 103rd Brigade directly under the Group Army.

The Russian Third Army sent 7 divisions south to support, the 3rd Army was responsible for the defensive mission, they only had the 11th Army, the 41st Division and the 2nd Cavalry Division, the available forces, the 14th Army had been lost before, and now there were only more than 10,000 additional troops. There were also four divisions in reserve in the third episode, but only the 11 divisions from the 2nd Army were combat-capable. As for several cavalry divisions, after previous losses, the current cavalry divisions became either cavalry regiments or mounted infantry brigades.

Rudolph asked the command of the army group that he would conduct a "limited reconnaissance" to Lemberg. "General Elmolly did not think much about it and approved his plan.

Now that the 27th Division had crossed the battle line far and had marched 50 kilometers, the Second Army's front had only advanced a dozen kilometers, and these were still the main attack points, and these breakthrough units had now stopped and began to turn around and attack from the flanks. The 12th Army did not keep up with Rudolph's speed, they entered through the gap opened by Rudolph, and then met the Russian 7th Army, which reacted. The two divisions of the 7th Army fought and retreated, stopping the pace of the 12th Army. The Seventh Army also had a 62nd Division in the southern theater, but only the 240th Regiment remained in the south, and now this regiment was unable to defend itself under the attack of the 12th Army.

The battlefield in the rear was inseparable, and the 12th Army, after defeating the Russian 7th Army, had to rush to the south to organize defense. The 8th Army of the Russian Eighth Army was coming from the south, and the 24th Army was also drawing troops from southern Lemberg.

The main task at this time was actually to destroy the two armies of the Eighth Army and shorten the distance with Lemberg. Now Rudolph's mission is to stop the Russian reinforcements.

Rudolph will certainly get the job done, but he doesn't intend to defend on the spot. He planned to take advantage of the lack of Russian forces and kill directly under the city of Lemberg. The 36th Regiment marched in a northeasterly direction and was expected to reach Sumner tomorrow. Rudolfin's main force is now only 90 kilometers away from Lemberg. It's already 4 o'clock, and after another 5 hours of marching, it is estimated that it will be possible to cover 40 kilometers. The general army marches at a speed of 4~5km/h, can march 40km a day, and the speed of rapid marching can reach 8~10km/h, which can only last for four hours. However, Rudolph's troops had trucks, which were only enough for 4,000 men, but they were enough to transport the two regiments of the 27th Division first.

Rudolph left the 79th Brigade and his baggage troops behind and left first with two regiments. He is now deep behind enemy lines, but he has committed the taboo of dividing troops. Rudolph had no fear because everyone was too far away from him. The Russian army to the north is engaged with the Second Army, and they have mobilized all their forces to hold their positions. The Russian front was now 30 kilometers from Rudolph to the east and west, and the closest Russian troops to the northwest were 40 kilometers from him. As for the Russian 8th Army, which is far to the south, it is at least two days away from here.
