Chapter 4: Escape
Early in the morning, there was a rhythmic sound of horses' hooves stepping on the bluestone pavement and turf at the head of the west town of Heishui Town, and the few residents who got up early avoided this scene one after another. The riders rode large brown horses with rifles on their backs, and the six-pointed star medal on their left chest reflected the first light of the early sun, which was particularly dazzling.
It was a large group of police officers, who had gathered in front of a house on Walms Avenue on the shore of Pingtie Lake, led by Sergeant Dunbar, the town's veteran policeman, who was old but energetic, and whose energetic face showed that he was full of confidence in the arrest.
Sergeant Dunbar took the wanted warrant from his deputy and read in a loud voice.
"John Coaster, by order of the federal government, I have arrested you in accordance with the law. Because of the severity of your sins, the state sheriff has made it clear whether you live or die, so if you resist, twenty of my men will not spare their bullets. As for Widow Maryliver, you are suspected of harboring criminals. ”
After some remarks, Sergeant Dunbar threw away the paper and continued.
"Mrs. McLiver, your husband's case will be resolved fairly, and your husband will be justified, maybe you don't want outsiders to interfere in your private affairs, but Blackwater will never allow any unjust case, and will never let go of any criminal!"
In the attic, Mrs. McLivier looked at John with her piercing eyes, and said with a smile on her lips.
"John, you can rest assured, I won't believe his words, during the massacre in Blackwater Town, he also promised the whole town like this, and the murderer has not been found yet."
That being said, John was still full of guilt for Mrs. McLiever, and it all happened so suddenly, and from the moment he set foot in Blackwater, he had laid the seeds for him, for Mrs. McLifever.
"Someone must be informing...... We're going to have to get out anyway!" John said.
"yes, we have to get out." Mrs. McLivier repeated.
However, after being stunned for a while, John really couldn't think of any escape plan, Mrs. McLifevier's house was next to the neighbor's house, facing the cobbled streets of Blackwater and facing Pingtie Lake on the back. If you can't get out of the main entrance, you can only fly out with wings.
"John, I have a plan, I don't know if it's feasible. Your Mr. McLifer used to install a ladder in the chimney wall to make it easier to clear the soot, but now I don't know if it's secure. We can go up to the roof of the house through the chimney and escape from the top of the house without them noticing. ”
"Great idea! Mrs. McLiver, I think we'll have to try. A little hope rose in John's rapidly depressed heart.
Before the police could raid in, John and Mrs. McLivier swept the charcoal from the fireplace, and Mrs. McLifeffer dragged out a storage box out of nowhere and opened it for John to see what was needed.
"Mrs. McLiver!" John exclaimed gratefully.
Mrs. McLivier took out a roller-locking rifle from it: "This is Mr. McLifever's hunting gun, and now that he is gone, I hope this gun finds a new owner, John, and you are the most suitable person for now." With gratitude and respect, John took the gun and took some food.
"Alright, let's go." John said he heard police banging on the door. He scrambled into the chimney, and at the same time extended his hand to Mrs. McLifever, who shook his head and looked at him with a smile.
"This is my position, here is the burial of the people I love, and I will not leave."
Twenty years ago, John left home with a large bag of luggage, and his father stood at the gate of the manor and watched him leave with a smile.
Who would have thought that at this time, a similar warm current poured into John's heart......
The door was slammed open, and John climbed up with tears in his eyes.
Mrs. McLiever's roof is rum-coloured, the neighbours are olive grey, some are bronzed, and there are log signs in the grocery store, the roof of the loft with shutters, and the ducks perched on the chimneys, and the view of Blackwater.
John jumped down from the last row of houses, and Black Pearl chirped and John jumped right on horseback.
Blackwater, goodbye. Goodbye, Mrs. McLifever.
John patted the Black Pearl and rode head-on to the West Elizabeth hinterland.
