Chapter 9: The Gunman's New Identity
John opened his diary with the smell of Valentine's morning grass, he felt that he was sorry for not writing down so much, just like most western cowboys, John was not good at expressing his heart, he liked to read and write, this is the habit of civilized people, isn't it? Cowboys may not only be armed and horseback riding, but many are also friendly painters. John calls his work the Sadder's Statement, like John lying on the windowsill of a police station, watching Mr. Fowler come to work dressed up.
"John, I knew you couldn't stay in bed, and in a little while the sheriff was going to come and see you, poor bastard."
John was worried about how to explain what had happened to Sheriff Malloy, and if he didn't like it, he might be sent to Detective Pinkerton to be left at their disposal, and at that point, the death penalty would be the lightest punishment.
Mr. Fowler saw John's frowning brow, and he worried for the young man in front of him, Sheriff Malloy was always uncertain, and he could fight for the honor of the policeman at the expense of a large bounty.
"John, everyone has a predetermined life, and if we put our precious energy into gambling on other people's decisions, it will be really unfortunate." Mr. Fowler lit a cigarette, hoping that speaking would help John.
"Mr. Fowler, my soul was pierced to death by that train a long time ago, and my life can be taken by someone else at any time, but my wife and children, Ashley and Jason, they are innocent, and they should not be involved in this pursuit."
"Have you settled them in?"
"They went to Oklahoma, where Aisley's father had a vineyard."
"That's good, the bounty hunters won't chase that far. I promised your father to protect you, but I've been doing it for years, and three years ago Miller said to visit you, and I parted ways with him on the Colorado River, hey...... I thought he wouldn't come back, so I became a bounty hunter, and then I met Sheriff Malloy, who had some style problems, but he must be a decent person, and I will intercede for you, and if it really doesn't work, I'll take you out on a raid, and we'll go into exile together. You saved my life, and it's time for me to pay it back. ”
"Brother Fowler, I heard you caught the train robber, is that so?" A gruff voice came from outside the door.
John put his hand on the holster, and as Mr. Fowler said, he could create chaos in order to escape.
"Well, it's just Williams and Solm, those two moves are always one step ahead of me." Mr. Fowler replied calmly.
"It's not as good as those young people, we're all old bones." Sheriff Malloy opened the door neatly, and John saw that he was wearing an old khaki coat, brown bib pants that fit his lean body very well, and only the sheriff's hat he wore could make people recognize him, and John could see that Sheriff Malloy was not a person who liked to put on a show.
"Wow! Wow!" Sheriff Malloy saw the heavily armed prisoner - John and his henchman deputy battalion commander stood together, and was directly startled, and then opened the wanted list on the table next to him, and looked for a while.
"Oh, that's a familiar face, you're John Coaster, aren't you? Brother Fowler never mentioned you, and when I arrested someone, there were only prostitutes and technicians standing together, and I was curious about your relationship. ”
Sheriff Malloy pursed his lips and continued, "The Federation has placed a bounty of two hundred dollars on your head, which is really a tempting number, and there is only one person before you who has a higher bounty than you. ”
"Lange." John said.
"Well, it's this guy like Jack the Ripper, who in 1887 wandered to New Hanover to burn, kill, and loot, and I can't believe that Detective Pinkerton hired him. A farmer put a bounty of two hundred and fifty dollars on his head, and I chased him to the Black Swamp with dozens of brothers, and the devil got a Maxim machine gun out of nowhere, and I will never forget the night when the sky was lit up by missiles and the swamp full of corpses, but I let him escape!"
"I'm sorry, I'm just so talkative, and you didn't let your guard down on it, if I were you, I wouldn't put my hands on the holster and make it look like I'm going to a duel, but I appreciate this vigilance, it's a prisoner's basic skill, isn't it? Or a gunslinger. ”
"Malloy, he didn't commit a crime, I can vouch for my life." Mr. Fowler interrupted.
"No, we are all guilty, since the time of believing in God, Brother Fowler, don't you just wait for salvation with a beard, you said it yourself. This young gunman killed Lange, even if he killed someone, he was also guilty, but his life was left to this righteous nation before God made a judgment, and now this power is in my hands. Malloy said.
"And what about your decision?" Mr. Fowler asked, and John felt a storm coming.
"I don't want to see two crazy bastards wreaking havoc on Valentine's law enforcement center."
"So you let me go?" John asked.
"I don't dare to protect you like that, I'll try to keep you from being pursued by the police in North New Hanover."
"Sheriff, there are very few people who can understand me, and you are one of them." John said gratefully.
"Alas, young people are young people, I can't decide right from wrong, you're just using your power to do justice and owe no one, right, Brother Fowler?"
Mr. Fowler smiled and nodded, it seemed that their worries were unnecessary.
Although John has been sheltered by Sheriff Malloy, he knows that the price is to sacrifice some of his freedom, at least the plan for revenge must be put aside.
"John, I know you're going to be idle, why don't you find something to do, what do you think of being a police officer? It's a great shelter so that you can get in and out of the wanted area as you do official business. "Sheriff Malloy is really a good man to the end, and there are not many wise old men like this now.
Ten minutes later, Valentine ushered in its new officers, and seeing John wearing the same six-pointed star badge on his chest, Thorm, Williams, and the other officers opened their mouths wide, especially when John rolled over and rode on the Black Pearl, Williams had a hundred reluctance on his face, he could not have imagined that the prisoner he had brought back had become their colleague.
