Chapter 241: The Black Tide

In the streets almost filled with black mud, Curt with Lizzy on his back is galloping along the ash-covered road towards his next destination.

In some time, the streets were filled with the burly giants, who were not sane and violently waved their limbs, attacking their compatriots as ugly as they were with their last force. The black mud that had been sprinkled from them rained down on the ground, spreading little by little on the pile of ashes.

The height difference became a fatal disadvantage at this point, and the giants didn't even bother with the two people passing by, but Curt still had to move forward cautiously, because their movements were so rough that they could crush Curt and Lizzie into meatloaf with a light stamp.

In order to avoid accidents as much as possible, Curt had to carry Lizzie on his back and run around the few remaining open spaces. He made his way through the ranks of giants, avoiding the sludge that fell from the sky - if they wanted to advance, they had to look for as many clearings as the black mud had not yet encroached upon.

The situation seemed to be getting worse and worse, and the black mud that had rained down on the ground spread little by little until all the ravines were filled. While they can still find plenty of foothold, there is no doubt that they are being overrun by the rotting sludge at a rapid pace.

Every time a giant falls, its body collapses into a liquid state in an instant, and most of its body melts into the darkness of the roadside. But after a few moments, the ripples from their fall will bring up a giant that is almost identical to it.

In the past, Lizzie used to feel that darkness was incomparably closer, and when they were under her control under the control of spells, they were as convenient as her siblings. But the darkness here is hardly to feel the slightest intimacy. They are crazy beasts, roaring and devouring a qiē.

For some reason, there seems to be a tendency for these monsters to multiply with their bodies mostly made of sludge, and even in areas that were previously open spaces, giants are already fighting each other. Thick sludge spreads under their feet and becomes a mass in the blink of an eye.

Since the dawn came. Two hours or more had passed, but neither of them had ever seen any light appear above the sky. The darkness seemed to be boundless, it had completely dominated the world for a long time, and now it was even more arrogant in the streets.

Not long ago, the two had inlaid the gray crystal given by the boy into the center of the last tower. When they saw the mechanical structure inside the tower start working again, they both knew that their destination was now a pitch-black tower at the end of the road in the distance.

Lizzie didn't have time to gain insight into the city's plans. However, it was undoubtedly designed as a giant Rubik's Cube. As soon as the stone tower at the center of the area began to operate, the remaining magic energy immediately became active along the path of the road, and the streamers that galloped on the ground were the traces of magic power.

Each of these towers was responsible for the energy turnover of the nearby area, and when the mechanical structures were put into operation, the neighborhood around the stone towers began to shimmer with a faint light. This seems to be a slight deviation from Lizzie's reasoning. But these are also nodes of energy.

The status of these towers in the Rubik's Cube may have something to do with the decoration of their interiors, and Curt was inexplicably reminded of what he had observed when he placed the Grey Crystals in the various towers. Not only is there a difference in height, but the interior decoration of the stone pagoda also clearly shows the identity of their owners.

If you just look at the architectural structure of the stone tower, you will often have the illusion that the stone tower is about to disintegrate. The corridors were in ruins long before the two arrived, they were all made of hard stone, and after all the damage that followed, all that left behind were the clanderly remains.

Similar to the bird crest that appeared on the first stone tower, several unique artifacts can be found on the top floor of each stone tower. Circles or polygons, and even coats of arms that resemble coats of arms. Without exception, they all radiate a wonderful brilliance that makes people feel mysterious.

As the central pedestal, they are all made of the same crystals. But each has its own unique design. From the crusted trunk of a tree to the prismatic columns polished by the hands of craftsmen, the pedestals all sit metal rings at the top waiting to be embedded in the grey crystal.

I don't know if it's intentional or not, the grooves on those metal rings are all exactly the same size. It may have been a simple move for Curt, but compared to the giant's body, the grooves that could hold the gray crystals were too small to be easily embedded.

Curt subconsciously touched the empty bag around his waist. He still remembered that the bag of grey crystals that the boy had given them had a similar appearance. They appear to be carved out of the same mold, and there is no clear difference between individuals.

No doubt. The boy had been prepared for this, and he knew very well what had befallen the world. And his current actions naturally have a clear purpose. It's really strange that he's busy for a purpose in such a world that seems to be "dead".

Although they were suspicious of these things, the two of them eventually embedded all the gray crystals into the crystal center inside the stone tower according to the boy's request. After a while, the stone towers were up to work, and it seemed that even the decaying materials were still barely maintaining a certain amount of function.

Marvelous patterns carved into the inner walls, and the inscriptions that line the towers - and the circular coats of arms that shimmer with a metallic sheen. The moment the grey crystals were embedded in the central pedestal, they immediately followed their predetermined trajectory, while also flickering with a mysterious shimmer.

In just a few breaths, the glimmer of light that appeared on the street spread to the distant tower. Although it seemed to be nothing more than a candle in the wind, that glimmer of light was enough to dispel a small part of the surrounding darkness and show the direction the two were heading.

Even the churning sludge around it seemed to cower in the light, and it wriggled like living creatures, and in a moment it retreated out of a path.

But the cringe of the sludge was only a small thing in a moment, and after the initial fear subsided, the sludge became irritable. They were like living creatures gathered together, rolling up in anger, and the surging black slowly expanded, constantly devouring the surrounding qiē and becoming stronger.

The surging darkness had a fluid-like nature, and they were still in the corners of the horizon and became extremely frantic in an instant. But after a while, the turbulent "currents" merged into a heavy tide, and they rushed frantically left and right on the street, engulfing the qiē that they touched.

Under the impact of the black tide, the fighting giants fell, and the pitch-black sludge sprayed out from all over their bodies, and the flying muddy water also smashed to the ground under the traction of gravity, making the pitch-black frenzy, which already had the power to blow wither, even stronger.

The spilled mud is like a summer rainstorm, but it is inexplicably quiet within this rain curtain. Whether it's dripping sludge or fallen giants, they play out scenes of battle over and over again, but they don't make a sound, as if they are illusions outside the world.

Waves of darkness rushed in, and they gathered together, trying to drown out the glimmer of light that tried to drive them away. I don't know if they know that the two of them are the ones who are responsible for attracting the light, and they chase Curt and Lizzie like hornets that have been stabbed in their hometown.

"Curt, I might want to trouble you to run a little faster...... If we continue at this level, it will probably take less than a moment to be caught up by the turbidity current. Just as Curt dodged the fallen giants almost at a distance of paper, Lizzie, who was behind him, suddenly said, "I don't know what will happen if I get touched by this thing, but I can guess a little bit by looking at the appearance of those giants." ”

Lizzie glanced back at the darkness behind her, and they slowly surged in their direction like a tidal wave. The sticky turbidity current, slow and powerful, silently pressed in the direction of the two of them, and in a moment they saw that the road they had passed not long ago had already been submerged.

The giants who were still fighting each other didn't even have time to struggle, and they were swept away by the black mud that gave birth to them. The giants involved in it were torn apart by the manic darkness in a matter of moments, and the severed limbs melted into the darkness and became a part of it.

A strange silence filled the streets, and even if the torn giants had fallen into the black tide, they still did not forget the "mission" of fighting each other. The limbs were intact and intertwined, and the giants who lacked arms and legs had to fight hard to attack the enemy in front of them, even if they used their teeth.

It's like crazy...... Perhaps for them, who have long been out of their minds, there is not even the concept of "madness" left. Born to die, to be resurrected - these giants trapped in the black mud continue to kill and be killed meaninglessly, without knowing what they are for.

"It's really sad...... I did my best. ”

With a deep sigh, Curt sped up his run, a self-deprecating smile on his face. Even after receiving that damn curse, they don't care about death, but these giants who keep repeating the cycle of life and death in front of them are probably even more miserable than them.

The darkness was about to envelop the streets, but the glimmer of light leading to the pitch-black tower in the distance had forcibly organized a path. Light and shadow tore through the space in an instant, and a golden sandstone road glittering with the sun's brilliance loomed through the cracks.

This is stuck in the old days, running on this road, they even faintly saw some giants in gorgeous costumes. They were red-eyed and had a very different appearance from humans—but they walked through the city in a hurry, like all ordinary people.

But this scene was soon engulfed by the rushing black tide, and when all the light was covered, all that remained was a lifeless mud. (To be continued)
