Chapter 40: Only in memory
ββ¦β¦ If there is still a need, one of us can be appointed to take the initiative to die.
"I just beg that I can let the other person go and return to the tribe to resume his life."
Prutt, who was wearing a sneering mask, bowed deeply and spoke slowly, his blood lingua franca accent was not very standard, and his speech speed was very slow.
The lines haven't changed?
Su Mo glanced sideways at Nornes, who nodded slightly, confirming his guess.
They weren't the only ones who had gone back in time, but the Pruth and Laval in front of them also seemed to have been reset.
Of course, it is not ruled out that it may be pretended...... Take it with a grain of salt.
Su Mo turned back and no longer asked Prute to take off his mask, but ordered bluntly, "We're going to your tribe." β
Still silent resistance.
"Since you are neither willing," he smiled meaninglessly, "then take us to your makeshift resting place." β
On the way to the low ruins this time, Su Mo focused on observing the scenes along the way.
At the end of the large bed of rocks was a sprawling lawn, overgrown with the kind of unkempt, slightly sloping weeds, and the grass was real when stepped on, with an eternal silence.
He seemed to smell a sweet scent, mixed with the fishy smell of the sea and a faint smell of death.
When walking up a hill and seeing a collapsed low wall not far away, the tips of Su Mo's ears, who were highly concentrated, suddenly moved, and he seemed to hear some subtle movement that was not easy to detect.
He stayed where he was, and said confidently and quite naturally: "I have some things that I need to find a place to make it easier." β
The three people in front of them also stopped and turned around.
Noons's gaze was vaguely suspicious, and Prutt was silent for a moment, then bowed and replied, "Your Excellency, please." β
Successfully breaking away from the group, Su Mo followed the direction from which the previous movement came from and walked towards the water surface under the hillside.
At the end of the lawn was a rocky cliff, about five or six meters from the shallows below, and Sumer stood on the edge of the cliff and looked down at the shallows, where several seal-like creatures were playing with a piece of wood rolling in the waves.
Su Mo squinted his eyes, not planning to really go to the toilet, raised his foot and kicked a small stone to fall off the cliff, falling into the water, making a "plop" sound.
The movement caused the "seals" to look up and cry out at the sight of him, small gray "seals" with red, button-like eyes and glittering teeth under their long beards.
Su Mo's eyes were lowered, staring at the toys that the "seals" were playing.
Not wood, but a corpse.
It was gray, there was no blood on its body, its arms were gone, and most of its face was missing.
The seal-like creature arched and gnawed on the carcass, and the carcass was rolled around in the water, revealing a bit of desolation.
When Su Mo arrived at the ruins, the first thing he saw was a collapsed low wall made of concrete, which, although it had fallen, could still block the cold wind outside.
The campfire in the tent had already risen, and Prutt was wearing his sneering mask, his numb eyes staring straight at the small flames in front of him.
Walking into the tent, Su Mo sat down by the fire and asked directly, "What's the matter with the 'seals' under the cliff?" β
Nornes: "Seals? β
Summer told him about the seaside before.
"Vampire seals," Laval said through his mask, "your masterpiece." β
As she spoke, she stood up directly.
"Will you listen to me?"
Laval asked, as if talking to himself.
Things went round and round as if they were back to square one, only this time, like Prutt, she didn't take off her mask.
Summer and Noones didn't move, neither agreeing nor disagreeing, and Laval was already pacing around the campfire.
The process was clearly rehearsed, like a dance, every move had rules to follow, and her voice was just as formal, emotionless, like testimony in court:
"You murdered your offspring.
"They have destroyed their homes, destroyed the world on which they lived, and left them to weep in the ruins.
"They are devastated mentally and physically, and they are our parents.
"Their lives are full of sorrow, and the legacy they have given us is sorrow."
"The inheritance we receive is mourning." Prutt echoed calmly.
Laval continues:
They died weeping, not knowing where this endless sorrow came from.
"They only understand one thing: only us, only their children will hear them cry.
"If they survive, we will continue to mourn and weep."
"We will continue to mourn and weep." Prutt chimed in again.
Laval's voice was clear and soft, sounding like a song and a sermon:
"Cities have been destroyed by natural disasters, forests have been reduced to ashes, books have sunk to the bottom of the sea, and lives have been lost.
"History, culture, heritage β the archives of civilization are falling apart and destroyed.
"Human civilization exists only in memory."
"Only in memory."
Prutt repeats mechanically.
The more Su Mo listened, the more incredible it became, and the more he listened, the more creepy he became.
He jerked his head up and asked in an eager tone:
"You'reβ"
The words he held in his throat were frozen again with the picture in front of him.
Laval stopped.
She lifted her mask with Prute in front of the campfire, looking at Summer and Nornes with blank eyes.
Then their heads fell from their necks.
Frozen in mid-air, unable to see the expression clearly, only two ugly pottery masks could be seen.
The corners of one mouth turned upwards into a shallow smile, both a friendly smile and a cold and terrifying sneer.
The corners of the other mouth were bent downward, and his face was full of sorrow, suppressed with deep sadness, anger, and hatred.
Su Mo's vision suddenly fell into darkness.
The air was cold, and he smelled the familiar smell again.
It was the smell of earth, the smell of mud after the tide receded, the smell of death.
Death as insignificant as a feather.
His eyes went dark...... Then quickly sober up.
The tents and fires disappeared, and large rock beds appeared.
Su Mo retracted the foot that he had stepped out of by inertia and stopped in place.
Nonnes, who stepped out of a position, stopped at the right time, turned around and asked, "What did you find?" β
Sumer: ......
He calmly held out a finger and pointed to the sky above him.
