Chapter 4: The Hope of Mankind
Dr. Jenner was stunned to hear this, as they hadn't heard anyone but the couple in a week after the military and other researchers had left.
The sound in the headset didn't stop.
"Hey!"
"Is anyone else?"
"I'm Leon Custer."
"I'd like to talk to you."
Dr. Jenner held the headset, but did not answer, he looked up, looked at his wife, and asked, somewhat bewildered:
"Melfa, what are we going to do?"
"Do you want to respond to him?"
Dr. Melfa approached the monitor in silence, bent down, and stared at the figure that suddenly appeared above, taking a closer look.
In his twenties, about 1.9 meters, strong, handsome, wearing police anti-riot armor, inside the armor is a set of gray-green county police uniforms.
He held a modified baseball bat with blood on it.
Melfa frowned, and controlled the camera to look around the square in front of the door.
What surprised her was that during this time, the seven or eight zombies that had been roaming the square had all been sanitized to death.
Melfa muttered for half a minute, turned on the switch on the headset, pressed the volume, and said in a low voice:
"I'm Melfa Pascal, director of research at the Atlanta CDC."
"Excuse me, Mr. Leon Custer, what is the purpose of your coming here?"

Whew, there's finally a response, and if I don't, I'll have to open the door violently after a while.
Leon was glad in his heart, he raised his head, faced the camera, his voice was calm, and he said word by word:
"Good afternoon, Dr. Melfa, I'm Leon Custer."
"I'm here to talk to you about a cooperation that will be beneficial to both parties."
The female voice in the speaker was silent for a few seconds, and then, in a tone, asked without any waves:
"Cooperation? I'm sorry, Mr. Custer, but I don't understand what you mean. β
"This is one of the most professional germ research institutions in the United States, and there is nothing we can work with you personally."
After hearing this, Leon's expression remained unchanged, and he said with a determined expression:
"No, Dr. Melfa, it's clear to me that you're in great need of help right now."
"The CDC's supplies are already seriously insufficient."
"How long will your electricity last?"
"Without outside help, do you want to stay inside and wait for death?"
The voice in the speaker was silent, and after dozens of seconds, he spoke again:
"Mr. Custer, how did you know this information?"
Leon shook his head.
"It doesn't matter, Dr. Melfa, but I can tell you."
"On the way to Atlanta, I met a fugitive researcher who had been bitten by a zombie, and I didn't know his name, but before I died, I learned this information from him."
There was silence in the speaker for a while before he spoke:
"Just assume it's true."
"Mr. Custer, you should know better than us about the situation outside, the CDC does need a lot of supplies, and it needs a long-term and stable supply."
"But, with your own strength, it's basically impossible to accomplish it."
"Moreover, the CDC is a research institution, and even if we get enough supplies, we can't provide you with any help other than germ research."
"As I've said before, we don't seem to have anything to work with."
Leon laughed, then restrained his smile and said with a solemn expression:
"Indeed, in the current situation, you basically can't help me with anything."
"But I know that the Atlanta CDC is probably one of the few remaining germ research facilities in the world."
"If we lose this place again, we will probably never be able to defeat the zombie virus again."
"I'm going to do my best to build a gathering place in Atlanta to gather the good people who are struggling with the disaster."
"Together, we support each other to defeat the damned zombies, rebuild our homes, and protect the hope of humanity."
Leon stared at the camera with a determined gaze, as if he could see the person opposite through the lens.
"Dr. Melfa, will you trust me?"
"Be my companion."
"Are you willing to gamble for the future of mankind?"
That's my goal, too.
The female voice in the speaker was silent for nearly a minute before she spoke hoarsely:
"What a great idea."
"Mr. Leon Custer, can't we just take your word for it?"
"But, as you say, for the sake of the future of humanity, I am willing to try once."
Click, the armored door at the gate slowly opened.
"Come in, Mr. Custer, and we'll talk about the cooperation you are talking about."

Dr. Melfa was in her forties, ordinary-looking, serious-looking, and most impressive of all her deep, pale blue eyes.
After Lyon entered the CDC, the shrewd and capable research director did not hold back, and she gave Lyon a very detailed introduction to the current situation of the base, including material reserves, various equipment and machinery, and the current research progress of the virus.
"In other words, what you need most urgently right now is virus samples, followed by the large amount of diesel or gasoline needed for generators?"
In the conference room, Leon asked with a serious expression as he sat back in a leather chair with his hands on his chest.
"Yes, at present, the power supply of the base can last for about thirty days, and because of the death and flight of a large number of researchers, our food and daily necessities are relatively sufficient, and we can supply a hundred people for about three months."
"And the most important virus samples, we have all depleted."
"Without virus samples, all research would have come to a standstill."
With that, Dr. Melfa tapped on the table and said in a somewhat urgent voice.
"So, Mr. Custer, we need you to get a new sample of the virus for us as soon as possible."
"For every minute of delay, in the future, the antibody serum will succeed one minute later."
"I know, it's very dangerous out there, but..."
Leon shook his head indifferently and said sincerely:
"It's okay, Dr. Melfa, that's what I'm here for."
"Don't worry about my safety, I've been living alone in the outside world for a month and know how to protect myself."
"You just have to tell me how to get those samples."
Hearing that Leon had been living alone for a month, Melfa's expression was slightly moved, and her tone became warmer, and she said:
"Your abilities are admirable, Mr. Custer."
"We need four virus samples at the moment."
"They are the blood and DNA of ordinary humans living in the outside environment, the brain tissue and flesh of zombies that are still active, and the brain tissue and flesh of zombies that have died."
"and the brain tissue and blood DNA of living people infected by the zombie virus."
Leon frowned, and just as he was about to speak, Dr. Melfa continued:
"Of course, I don't force a fourth virus sample, but I hope that if you can, you can help us get it, which is very important for the study of zombie viruses."
"The greater the number of hosts for each virus sample, the better, and it is best not to have less than ten for a single species."
"Every half a month, these samples need to be replaced."
"It's a long-term task."
"Today's task is to collect a few freshly dead virus samples from us in the square."
Leon nodded, this task was not difficult for him.
"Before it gets dark, I'm going to collect those samples."
"Now, then, let's discuss the conditions on my side."
