Chapter 18: Catch it all
As the mastermind behind the night attack, Townsend accepted Governor Swan's apology.
"It was found out that Elizabeth's maid Gillian Ann and the groom Henry conspired to steal the property while Elizabeth was asleep."
Governor Swan was indignant: "They even stole my horse!" β
"It's good that people are okay." Townsend reassured.
"Fortunately, Mr. Tang's property was not lost, otherwise I wouldn't know how to express my guilt." Governor Swan sighed: "I will issue a wanted warrant to definitely arrest the two of them!" β
"Shouldn't they go far and just go and arrest them?" Townsend came up with an idea.
"Today is Colonel Norrington's promotion ceremony, and we can't afford to make a difference." Governor Swan gritted his teeth: "They'll pick the right moment!" β
"Thankfully, none of the things they stole were of much value, except that Elizabeth seemed to have lost an important memento."
"What memorial?" Townsend asked.
"Elizabeth won't tell me." Governor Swan said this, and spread his hands: "Maybe it was a gift from Mr. Turner, or she wouldn't have hidden it from me." β
"Daughters always have a bit of rebellious thoughts when they grow up, don't they? I just hope it doesn't affect her mood to participate in the ceremony today. β
"Mr. Swan is such a caring father." Townsend complimented: "I'm sure Elizabeth will adjust, it's time for me to get ready, it's my last day at Port Royal." β
"Oh, that's right." Governor Swan suddenly said, "Your game worth five hundred gold coins... Just today, right? Unfortunately, I don't have time to observe, I have to prepare for the ceremony. β
"Mr. Tang, don't forget to rush to the naval fortress on the cliff before noon, this is much more important than the game."
"Of course I won't miss it."
At this time, the butler came over and said softly, "Mr. Tang, Lord Governor, Mr. Turner is waiting in the drawing room. β
"William Turner? What is he doing at this time? Governor Swan was stunned for a moment, and suddenly patted his head: "I almost forgot, he was going to send a gift for Colonel Norrington." β
The two walked to the parlor and saw William standing there restlessly, and as soon as they met, they couldn't wait to ask, "Good morning, sir, I heard that there was a theft last night, is Miss Swan okay?" β
"That's not something you need to care about, Mr. Turner." Governor Swan's tone was not polite: "What about what I ordered?" β
William Turner then opened the long box in front of him, revealing a stabbing sword, and said, "The blade is of steel, and the hilt is inlaid with goldβ"
"That's it." Governor Swan interrupted Mr. Turner's introduction, closed the long box, and said, "I believe in Mr. Brown's craft. β
He was obviously not in the mood to make small talk with William, but said, "Mr. Turner, please take care of yourself." β
Then he hurried down the stairs.
William Turner opened his mouth, speechless.
"Mr. Swan is not in a good mood." "Don't worry, Miss Swan is safe, but she has lost some things, and I heard that there is an important souvenir among them." β
William Turner breathed a sigh of relief: "Miss Swan is fine. β
"Let's go, Mr. Turner, it's time to leave for the docks." Tang Sen patted him on the shoulder: "As one of the seven challengers, I don't think you want to miss today's game, right?" β
"Of course, Mr. Tang." William Turner paused for a moment and whispered, "Actually, I made that sword, and I think it's a masterpiece, but it's a pity that even if you say it, Governor Swan won't believe it." β
"People always prefer to trust famous people, Mr. Turner." Tang Sen Shi Ran said: "You are still young. β
William Turner nodded in agreement.
Although the face of Mr. Tang next to him did not look much older than himself, William Turner did not feel out of place when this sentence came out of Mr. Tang's mouth.
Presumably the difference in status and style?
Walking out of the governor's house, Warrant Officer Tom was already standing at the gate waiting.
"Good morning, Tom." Townsend smiled and patted him on the shoulder.
Tom bowed his head and saluted, quietly handing a small package to Townsen.
Tang Sen rubbed his fingers, the corners of his mouth slightly hooked.
"It's a good day, isn't it?"
......
Today is a big day for the people of Port Royal.
It's not because Colonel Norrington went one step further and was promoted to brigadier generalβ
Honestly, who cares about that?
The only thing people care about is the young, golden and mysterious Mr. Tang.
The dock was more lively than any other day, and there were even quite a few people lying on the rooftops of the nearby rooftops.
No one wanted to miss Mr. Tang's last day at Port Royal, and no one wondered which lucky one would have taken away the 500 gold coins that had been sitting on the dock for five days and had been coveted by countless people.
Of course, they are more looking forward to the news that Mr. Tang said yesterday, and no one wants to be the lucky one who can continue to participate in Mr. Tang's games.
"Everybody knows what they're going to do today, right?"
Standing under the protection of the soldiers, Townsend raised his voice, "Let's welcome the seven challengers." β
The crowd erupted in a wave of cheers, and the seven challengers stood in a line, their faces flushed with excitement.
Even if they fail to challenge, this is the highlight of their lives.
There were women, teenagers, blacks, and wealthy merchants, but there was no doubt that they all had a reason to win five hundred gold coins.
I have to admit that Mr. Turner was the most conspicuous of them all, and with his handsome face, he won the cheers of many young girls and women.
"The rules of the game today are as simple as ever."
Townsend clapped his hands and motioned to the challengers, "Gentlemen, ladies, please put your hands on the box, yes, I'm talking about the box full of gold coins." β
The box was not large, and the challengers had to huddle together, until they had put all their hands on the box, and Townsend said, "Very well, then the game begins." β
The challengers were stunned for a moment, and one of the black men stood up and said cautiously, "Mr. Tang, you haven't told us the rules of the game yet. β
"Really?" Tang Sen raised his eyebrows and said, "Mr. Nopu, I don't think the rules of the game matter to you anymore. β
"For... Why? The black man named Knop asked uneasily.
"It's a pity." Tang Sen spread his hands: "Because you have been eliminated." β
There was an uproar around, and Nopu's already black face turned even darker and purple at this time, and his emotions collapsed instantly, and he roared angrily: "No! It's not fair! I didn't do anything! β
"No, you did." Tang Sen's tone was flat: "Look back at your competitors, do you see the difference?" β
Nopp looked back blankly and saw six challengers huddled together, some still dazed, others with a blank expression.
"I... I don't know..."
"You can't take your hands off the box, or you'll be considered giving up, right?" At this time, William Turner spoke: "That's why this Mr. Nope will be eliminated." β
"That's right, it looks like someone has already figured out the rules of the game." Townsend complimented, "Mr. Turner, you are very smart, but in my game, it is not enough to be smart. β
"Mr. Tang! Mr. Tang! Give me another chance! I'm not ready! Nop shouted.
"There is no second chance in life, sir." Townsend said coldly.
"Nope! No! No! β
In the frantic struggle, Nop was driven out of the encirclement by the soldiers, and the remaining six challengers immediately pressed their hands tightly against the glass box, not daring to move.
"Gentlemen, take it easy." Townsend laughed, "Glass isn't something sturdy. β
"As you can see, the rules of this game are called, no matter what, don't let your hand leave the box, and the owner of the last hand on the box will have the wealth, and the others, will get nothing."
Suddenly there was a noisy discussion around him.
"It's another game of willpower, and Mr. Tang seems to like this type of game."
"It's not just about willpower, it's about physique, it's a pity, if it were me, I would never let go until I starved to death!"
"Tie your hands to it! Gentlemen! Don't lose! β
"Will! Come on! If you win, I'll marry you! β
"Mr. Borg, please calm down, Will is a man!"
β......β
Ignoring these discussions, Townsend continued, "Of course, you are all winners of previous games, and I believe you have enough willpower. β
"You might be able to hold on for a day, two days, three days, or even a week without letting go."
"But unfortunately, I don't have so much time to wait for the winner to be born, so, while you insist, I will use all kinds of means to interfere with you, and believe me, this game will end sooner than you think."
With Town's words, the pressure gradually enveloped all the challengers present.
"Okay, it's still early, you can prepare mentally, and then, I'll announce another thing."
Tang Sen paused, looked around, and smiled, "I think everyone knows what I'm going to say, right?" β
"Yes!" Everyone spoke in unison, full of anticipation.
"That's right." Townsend nodded, "I said yesterday that I would pick a subset of people who will be eligible to continue participating in the game. β
Townsend turned around, pointed to the sea, and said, "Everyone knows that I am about to leave Port Royal, and this decision will not change. β
"I'm happy to bring some people with me, and I believe it would be a good spice to be able to play some enjoyable games every day in the boring life of sailing."
"Sure enough, I guessed it!" As soon as the words fell, someone suddenly shouted excitedly: "Mr. Tang, take me!" I've been at the pier since day one, please give me this chance! β
"Pick me! I'm a veteran sailor! β
"Mr. Tang, choose me! I'm good at playing games! β
Tang Sen pressed down with both hands, quieting down the excited crowd, and then said, "I know everyone is in a hurry, but don't worry yet." β
"The sea is dangerous, and I want everyone to take responsibility for their decisions."
"Therefore, I can only regret to announce that the rest of the journey will not include the elderly, children and women."
Protests erupted from the crowd, but the volume was too low and was quickly silenced by the voices of others.
After all, in this area of Port Royal, the proportion of elderly children is still very small, and as for women... Even they themselves don't think that women can sail on ships.
"As always, I think choice and luck are the most important components of the game."
Townsend continued: "You can see these ships docked in the harbor. β
"I've already bought some of the boats, but I'm not going to tell you which ones I bought, and you can choose to board any of them."
"If you choose the right ship, then you will follow me to the sea."
As always, Mr. Tang's style has long been accustomed to it.
"With so many ships in the harbor, the chances of boarding the right ship are too small!"
"Otherwise, do you think everyone can follow Mr. Tang to sea?"
"Hehe, sailing at sea can take months at every turn, even if you only play once a day, it will always be my turn, I think I'm going to get rich!"
"Pick the biggest ship! Mr. Tang definitely likes the big one! β
"How can Mr. Tang be so easy for you to guess, maybe he likes small ones?"
"I don't care, I'll go first!"
β......β
Looking at the people who couldn't wait, Tang Sen waved his hand and said:
"Now, gentlemen who want to go to sea can go to the soldiers on the docks, and they will check whether you are qualified to go on board."
"The results will be announced when the afternoon sails, and if your ship has sailed, then congratulations, you've been chosen."
With that, Townsend ignored the bustling crowd of people preparing to board the ship, and turned to the soldiers surrounding the challengers and announced:
"Soldiers, please help me keep an eye on the challengers, and if someone's hand leaves the box, please let him out of here."
"Of course, it's hard work, so when the final winner comes out, I'll give everyone ten gold coins each."
After speaking, Tang Sen left the scene with Tom Shi Ran.
"Mr. Tang is really a good means, these people will not know that most of the ships present already belong to Mr. Tang." Tom whispered.
"I didn't deceive them, did I?" Tang Sen said lightly: "It's just a part of the facts." β
"Let's get down to business, has Colonel Norrington already decided on the list of soldiers who will escort me to sea this time?"
"The news announced last night that this time it was the Intrepid and the Interceptor, a total of one hundred and twenty soldiers sailed with the ship, and all the other soldiers were left behind in Port Royal, and the list of remaining soldiers is here." Tom handed over a long piece of parchment.
Tang Sen quickly glanced at the names on it, and suddenly smiled: "Interesting, they are all very familiar names." β
"Colonel Norrington thinks that the soldiers who have accepted Mr. Don's gift do not need the bonus for sailing, and that their money bags are already bulging." Tom said.
"It's really empathetic." Townsend dusted off the parchment:
"The soldiers who were left behind must be sad now."
"Let's go comfort them."
