Section 8: The Traveler of Acasta (2)
Nothing was said all night.
After dinner in the evening, Henry found more firewood to increase the time the campfire burned - they were a little far from the camp, and the formation of more than a thousand men caused most of the beasts to run from the edge of the forest into the depths, so that the two of them entered the deeper forest in order to hunt them.
Although the larger, more intelligent beasts would hide farther away so there was no real danger nearby, Henry kept the campfire from going out. Fire always scared the wild animals away, but the two chose the large branches with thick trunks as a place to spend the night.
This is necessary to be cautious in the warm coastal forests, where there are still countless nocturnal snakes, insects, rats and ants beneath the woodland floor, despite the vigorous campfires.
Staying away from the ground is the best way to prevent you from waking up to find yourself crawling with centipedes, cockroaches, beetles, spiders, and ants, and on the trunk of the tree they chose to rest on, Henry smeared it with some kind of powdered mixture of sap with a strong pungent smell that they had brought with them.
"Insect repellent powder, it's available at any adventurer's store, and it's incredibly cheap," the sage explained to a curious Mira, and after that, the two spent their first night in the wild.
What woke up the white-haired Lo Ann Lori was a drop of dew that had accumulated on the leaves of the trees in the early morning and finally overwhelmed and dripped on the tip of her nose.
It was just dawn, but Henry beside her had already descended from the tree.
"Click" Mira unfastened the leash on her body, and it was no joke to turn over and fall from a branch several meters high at night, even if the tree they chose was spacious for the girl's size, but it was necessary to avoid any accidents.
"Woo~" The waist tightened by the belt and the sleep of curling up carefully on the trunk of the tree and unable to stretch it out made Luo An Da Lori wake up only to feel sore, she moved her body slightly, and the tip of her nose sniffed a smell of bread.
The roast hares and roast snakes that had been left over from last night had been thrown far away by Henry, and the appeal of meat was far higher than that of grain, and they did not want some beast with a keen sense of smell to come here while they were asleep.
Mira cleaned up and put on her coat for the quilt, then clung to the trunk and climbed down cautiously.
"Get up," she said, handing Henry the strap that held her body in place, one of the sages used to carry her sword, and Henry took the strap and handed her a glass of water made of large leaves to Mira.
Water sources in the wild are often dangerous, and there are countless people among mercenaries and adventurers who have contracted dysentery and the like from drinking raw water outside. In much earlier times, even when the king's army went to war in a foreign land, the first thing to deal with was not the enemy but supplies—a fact that has not changed to this day, but which has been left to the discretion of the soldiers—we have gone far away.
Most of today's travelers carry a small iron pot that can boil water, which is the safest way to boil, and the hot water can also warm your body or wash up. However, this was limited to those who had horses or wagons, and hikers like Henry and Mira were still only able to gather water in the wild.
Fortunately, the waters and plants of the Ecasta Plains were abundant and the air was very humid, and the small matter of fetching water alone was not at all difficult for Henry, who had the name of a sage.
The large leaves in the woods are an excellent container for water, and after making a rough shape with the widest part in the middle, and then holding it with some clean rattan, a simple water cup is made.
There was no obvious source of water in the forest where the two were located, or in the vicinity of it, maybe there was a dark river, or maybe there was a stream further away that hadn't been explored, who knows.
There is no water source that can be taken at any time, so what is in this cup?Mira watched as Henry carefully recalled what he had said yesterday—observe and study—and she took a sip, and there was some fresh smell of the water peculiar to plants, and the Loan girl cast an inquiring look at the sage.
"There are several sources of clean water in the wild, one is rain, the other is snow, and there is the early morning dew. But we don't have the first two here for the time being, and the latter is too time-consuming to collect, if there are better options. Henry placed the large leaf of bread at just the right distance near the rekindled campfire, then turned and pointed to the tree behind him.
"Lianas—I mean, vines and the like, just make a cut in the root to catch the kind of thing you're drinking right now," Henry said to Mira, and the girl nodded, silently memorizing it.
"I'd like to bring a soft kettle made of lamb's skin if I can. Although it may have some strange smells for a while, it is better than having to fetch water in the wild every time. Henry shrugged, and Mira gave him a roll of the eye.
"We need more than a kettle," said the girl, sitting down next to the sage.
......
......
After eating the re-baked bread, the two quickly returned to the camp, and before it was quite dawn, deliberately avoiding the mercenaries who were still sleeping with their weapons in their arms, Henry and Mira came to the carriage where preparations were being made.
Not too many people paid too much attention to the arrival of the two. The entire team of coachmen, caravan guards, caravan leaders, travelers, mercenary group members, and freelance mercenaries added up to more than a thousand people, so although a big man with a little girl who was obviously a mercenary was a bit eye-catching, few people would pay attention.
Henry and Mira walked to the front of the line again to the lightweight cargo area, and they stopped by a carriage to wait for the group to leave.
The driver of the carriage was a middle-aged man of about 35 years old, and unlike the others, he also brought his son with him. The red-haired boy with some freckles on his face about Mira's age lit up when he saw Henry, who was tall and carrying a large sword—obviously a guy like him with a big sword on his back was quite handsome to a child, but he immediately noticed the white-haired Lori behind him.
"Oh, is that a short sword?" the boy who pounced on the wooden chair at the front of the carriage startled the girl a little, and she turned her head, only to notice that there was another peer in the convoy.
“...... Yes," the girl nodded shyly, and the red-haired boy looked longingly and said "Oh!", and then he stared at Mira: "Are you also a mercenary, you look about my age, can I look at your short sword?" The noisy red-haired boy attracted the attention of the two adults, and the middle-aged coachman with a mustache and a small figure looked at Henry with a wry smile and nodded, and the sage responded with the same motion.
“...... No," Mira shook her head again, and the red-haired boy shouted "Show me!" and lunged at her - a gesture that completely frightened the girl, and she took a big step back with the dagger at her waist, and it was at this time -
"Yo-oh Uncle Benny has defeated the damned Loan robbers!!" suddenly came the sound of galloping horses from the bustling convoy behind, and the blonde young man from before rushed straight at the girl with his horse in his hands - Henry turned around in a flash of lightning, but it seemed too late-
“......”
"Boom-bang-what!-"
"Boom-boom!"
The smoke and dust dispersed, and the sluggish Luoan girl stood in place in a dodgy posture.
He didn't draw his broadsword.
The audience fell silent, and the coachman grabbed his son and pulled him back.
For a split second henry was a short knife in his hand, and he threw it at the blazing horse at full speed - the knife plunged into the joint of the white horse's forelegs, causing it to fall to the ground before it could step on Mira, and the blond young man was covered in mud.
"Ahh
"Oh my god Vanessa, oh my god what these shitty bastards have done to you......"
"You!!, you damn poor bitch, what have you done to my Vanessa!!!Do you know how much she cost me, this is a purebred warhorse, and you can't afford to lose her a hundred of them!" Benny scrambled to his feet, but Henry ignored it, and simply walked over and picked up Mira, and then asked her if she was okay in his usual calm voice.
"Boom-" The sound of metal clashing against each other and footsteps came from behind, and a huge movement caught the attention of the middle of the group, and all the caravan guards and regular mercenary regiments in standard chain mail ran over to see what was going on, and Benny, who saw them, immediately shouted.
"Kill those two dog mongrels, kill them for me!" ordered the high-ranking prince of the Chamber of Commerce, and the guards immediately leveled their spears, two of them apparently planning to behave in front of their masters, and the other companions grabbed their spears and stabbed at Henry.
"......" The sage pulled Mira behind him with a cold face, and he didn't make any dodge moves, but just stood there straight, letting two menacing spears stab at his chest.
"Boom-" The sharp silver spear tips with a violent cracking sound struck Henry's chest, but they came to a steady stop less than 10 centimeters from their target, unable to advance any further.
"Uhhh
Heng grasped the shafts of the two spears with one left hand, and with just one hand, he easily stopped the two men's thrusts.
No matter how hard the two of them tried, the tall sage stood still as if it were a stone tablet. His face was calm with a hint of anger, and in the next second, the muscles on his exposed skin erupted with the strength of his arm.
The barrel of the hardwood gun was broken by Henry's one-handed "snap-" He casually threw it away, and the two caravan guards who had lost the tip of their spears took a few steps back with a stunned expression.
"This ...... Is this a human thing?" shouted one of them and tried to burrow into his companion, but then he was kicked out by a man behind him.
"Impulsive bastard, can't think calmly and want to run away when you're beaten? I don't need a waste wood like you here. "Out of the crowd was a man in the prime of life with the same black hair as Henry. He was of a very generous stature, and although he was not as tall as a sage, he was far stronger than Henry with a well-proportioned appearance.
The strong man's appearance was not angry, his sharp eyes swept back and forth, even Benny, who was the son's brother, turned his head and did not dare to look directly - but when he met the calm light blue pupils, the other party did not have the slightest hint of evasion.
"I'm the head of Armstrong's guard," the strong man said, glancing back and forth - there were only a dozen caravan guards and Forde mercenaries around for the time being, but more people would come at once.
"Henry Mayer," replied the sage.
"This is not a good place to talk, please come with me," Armstrong nodded, and then ordered the heavily armed men around him to walk further away with Henry. Only Benny, who was still kneeling next to the white horse, was quite noisy behind him, and after a while, Henry and the others heard Benny swearing loudly, almost femininely.
"Look at you shitty bastards! Get out of here! There's nothing to see here, get out of here!"
He shouted, and the group stopped at the front of the convoy. After waving the driver back a bit, Armstrong ordered his men to step aside and stand by.
The caravan guard didn't make his men attack, much to Mira's relief, who was following Henry closely.
"......" He glanced at Mira, then cast more of his gaze on Henry.
It was a moment before Armstrong sighed.
"First of all, I want to thank you, Mercenary Mel"
"Thank you for helping us take good care of that arrogant bastard," he said, and then sighed, "But then things will get quite ugly, because that guy's old man is my immediate boss, and even if I agree with you in my heart, I have my duty." ”
"......" Henry didn't speak, he understood that the other party must have a plan to deal with it when he said such a thing.
"Hand over your sword," he said, and the first to react to this was Mira behind Henry, the girl from the Loan, who looked rather helpless, and clung to the hem of Henry's dress, as if she wanted to say something but did not know what to say, and looked back and forth with eager eyes.
"I'll leave you the short sword and small sword for self-defense, but in the absence of a crisis, your big sword will be kept by us first. This is the bare minimum, and you will be restricted from moving around the passenger compartment at the end of the convoy for the rest of the day, for the convenience of both parties. ”
"This will be done until we reach Fort Ellen, where we will ask the Lord's Mansion to judge you and decide you for your crimes. Do you think this plan is acceptable" Armstrong showed calmness and wisdom beyond his appearance, and Henry nodded, unfastened the metal buckle on his chest in Mira's anxious eyes, and then handed the large sword in his hand to the other party.
"Oh-" The head of the caravan guard who took the sword sank his hands, he looked at it for a moment, and then raised his head to look at Henry with complicated eyes.
"You're not easy......," he said, and nodded to Henry, "Then we'll wait until we reach Ehrenburg," and then turned around and quickly departed with his men.
“...... Is that okay, for me. When everyone was leaving, Lori looked at Henry with worried eyes and asked.
"No problem," the sage smiled reassuringly, reaching out and touching her head.
Footsteps sounded behind the caravan guards again, and it was the red-haired mercenary deputy head who ran over with the caravan guards. Adella glanced at Henry, who was not carrying a great sword, from a distance of a few meters, and the sage nodded at her silently.
"......" The red-haired mercenary nodded in response, and seeing that the matter had been resolved, she didn't come any closer, but just took another deep look at the two of them, turned around and walked towards the back.
"Uhhh The loud and long voice reached every position in the group, and some of the mercenaries, who were still asleep, scrambled up from the trees they were leaning on.
The journey has begun again.
