Chapter 349: The Meeting in Santiago
The meeting between Chen Jianqiu and General Patricio Lynch was arranged in San Diego.
It is an ancient city with a great historical atmosphere, which is said to have been founded in 1541.
The city is built around the St. Lucia Mountain, and a variety of Spanish-style buildings line the foothills.
In recent years, the city has grown rapidly and on a larger scale due to the discovery and excavation of copper mines.
In Chen Jianqiu's eyes, the construction of San Diego is at least no less than that of Denver in the same period.
Ondejong led him and Camilla along the main road through the city, then stopped in front of a luxurious mansion at the foot of the mountain.
"This is General Lynch's mansion." Weng Derong said to Chen Jianqiu, who was looking up at the building.
He had been here once at the invitation of the general.
Chen Jianqiu took his gaze back, dismounted, and sorted out his clothes.
He wore a black cloth robe today, and Camilla, who was next to him, changed into a crimson dress.
Ever since Abiot had been in JuΓ‘rez, the girl had become his royal Spanish interpreter.
Compared to the general, he has ordered in advance.
When the waiter at the door saw the three men, he came up and took the reins from their hands.
"The general is waiting for you inside." He said.
The three of them walked through the door, through a long corridor covered with oil paintings, and came to a living room with an empty ceiling.
A middle-aged soldier in a military uniform is sitting on a Chinese-style chair with yellow pears.
He had a mustache, a very straight nose, and piercing eyes.
Presumably, this is General Patricio Lynch.
After seeing the three of them come in, he stood up and greeted them with a smile.
"Welcome, my Chinese friends!"
As soon as you open your mouth, it's standard Cantonese.
Chen Jianqiu pursed his lips.
It seems that there is no need for translation.
"You may be seated, you may be seated." He pointed to a few chairs opposite him, which were also Huanghuali, and said to the three of them.
The crowd took their seats.
After a while, a servant came up with four tea bowls and placed one on the coffee table next to each of them.
Chen Jianqiu smelled a strong tea aroma of oolong tea.
"I've been to Guangzhou, I've been there for a while." The general said to Chen Jianqiu, "The young businessmen there are dressed like you. β
"It's just that you don't have long braids on the back of your head." He gestured his hand to the back of his head.
"I'm Han, and I don't like that kind of hairstyle where people are not human and ghosts are not ghosts." Chen Jianqiu said.
The general obviously didn't quite understand what Chen Jianqiu meant, he was just a lover of Chinese culture, not a China expert.
So he stopped continuing the topic.
"Presumably, you are the same Mr. Chen, right? General Weng told me, under your leadership, the brown army is like a bamboo? The general said to Chen Jianqiu, as if he was talking to a junior in his army.
"I'm just a businessman, sir, and Weng Shuai is still a good conductor." Chen Jianqiu looked at Weng Derong, "More importantly, the Chinese soldiers regard this place as their homeland, so they share the same hatred and fight to kill the enemy." β
"Haha, I know this, I know." The general laughed heartily.
"I don't know if General Weng told you that those mine bosses in Peru don't treat Chinese workers as human beings." He recalled the first time he met Weng Dejon, "If I'm not mistaken, the original owner of your mine seems to be an American. β
"In our country, we are willing to give every Chinese worker equal citizenship and opportunities, which is what I have always emphasized to our leaders."
Chen Jianqiu didn't speak, Weng Derong looked at the general, and Camilla was tasting tea.
She was now the one in this room who didn't understand anything.
"Your intentions, the letter is also very clear, on the first point, I and the Chilean government will fulfill our promise to hand over Iquique to your self-government, the Chinese have proved with their own actions that they are willing to pay for this country."
The general said unhurriedly, and there was weight in every sentence.
"But the second one"
The general paused, and at the same time his gaze stopped on Chen Jianqiu's face.
"Mr. Chen, if you want to buy, or cooperate with the Chilean government to develop nitrate, I don't dare to promise you?"
"Oh?" Chen Jianqiu raised his eyebrows.
"As far as I know, you're from the United States, right?" The general's gaze was very sharp.
"Yes."
"There's a guy named Mbak Swanson, do you know him?" The general took a sip of tea from his own bowl, then spat out a few tea leaves into the spittoon to the side.
"I don't know." Chen Jianqiu shook his head.
"According to what we have learned, he and an American company behind him have played a very dishonorable role in this war." The smile on the general's face disappeared, "We wanted to hand him over to the U.S. government, but he is missing. β
A picture surfaced in Chen Jianqiu's mind.
The gentleman's body should now be crushed by stones under the seabed.
"We're not sure if that's his personal act or if it's on behalf of the U.S. government, but it's clear that there's no place for an American businessman here."
The general took another sip of tea, but Yu Guang was observing Chen Jianqiu.
"So, is that what the 'giant' behind you means?"
Chen Jianqiu's expression didn't make much waves, and he asked.
The general did not answer this question directly, but stood up and said to Chen Jianqiu:
"There is a gentleman who wants to see you, please come with me."
Chen Jianqiu gave Weng Derong and Camilla a look each, motioned for them to wait here, and followed the general out of the living room.
After they passed through a hallway, Chen Jianqiu saw a thick wooden door with carvings.
The general opened the door.
"Please come in."
Chen Jianqiu walked in, and the general closed the door behind him.
He surveyed the room.
The room has bookcases on both walls, on which are all kinds of books, including some Chinese thread-bound books, and on the top of one of the bookcases, there are large portraits of generals.
It seems that this should be the general's study.
And there was a man in a suit, who was standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling bed, with his back to him.
Hearing movement in the doorway, he turned around.
It was a lanky man with a goatee and a very heavy London accent
"Hello, Mr. Chen, it's a pleasure to meet you." He stretched out a hand to Chen Jianqiu.
Chen Jianqiu shook his hand, but his gaze stayed on his face and did not take his eyes away.
"Let me introduce myself, my name is Chris Hunt, and I am the British ambassador to Chile." The man said.
"Hello, Mr. Ambassador." Chen Jianqiu's face was not shocked, but he was muttering in his heart.
Ambassador? What do you want me to do?
"First of all, as an ally of the Chilean government, I am very grateful that you were able to contribute to the victory of this war." "The bravery you and your soldiers have shown in this war is impressive. β
This sentence made Chen Jianqiu a little surprised.
In his impression, the gentlemen of Old London in Great Britain all reveal a kind of arrogance of "Lao Tzu is the best in the world".
Not to mention the Chinese who have no status in the world.
The ambassador from London doesn't seem to be the same.
"What's the matter? Let's get it straight. Chen Jianqiu said straight to the point.
Ambassador Hunt hesitated, but said:
"Mr. Chen, we have sent people to study the battles you have won, to investigate the battlefields, such as the beaches of Iquique, and to observe the traces of those scenes, even the corpses."
"Study our battles?"
"Well, yes." Hunter nodded, "Because your record is so dazzling and incredible that it has piqued our interest." β
"After we synthesized the data and information from all sides, we came to a conclusion."
Hunter stared at Chen Jianqiu intently.
"You should have mastered a weapon with great lethality that didn't exist in this world before!"
