Chapter 444: Wild Child
These large and medium-sized cities in the empire are like children in a big feudal family, and the more children there are, the less attention parents can give.
These million-dollar metropolises of the empire itself have consolidated their leading positions, some have risen to their former glory, and some have been overshadowed by other fast-growing cities.
in these cities
The seventh-ranked New Xi'an with a population of 1,036,900 and the eleventh-ranked Donggang with a population of 728,600 can be described as a pair of wild children, which have risen rapidly in just over a decade and created remarkable economic and colonial construction achievements.
Paradise Island, a large city in the west and east of the royal territory, rarely receives government financial allocations, and more comes from the special construction funds of the Royal Home Office, as well as its own fiscal and tax revenues.
After the North American War
The Imperial Interior Government was able to free up more funds for the construction of Paradise Island, and the successive construction of the Western Railway Network and the Eastern Railway Network has achieved initial results, with the Western Railway Network with New Xi'an as the core opening mileage of more than 1,370 kilometers, connecting several important cities and 10 towns around it.
The eastern railway network with Donggang as the core has reached more than 460 kilometers, which has also greatly promoted the in-depth colonization of the eastern part of the country, accelerated the circulation of goods, and has a stronger population carrying capacity.
The early immigrant towns entered a mature period, bringing a steady stream of tax revenue to the government of the Paradise Island Territory directly under the Royal Crown, which can be used for urban construction, railways, highways, reservoirs, bridges and farmland facilities and other infrastructure investment, forming a good trend of rolling development.
In 1864, the Royal Interior Office allocated 11.5 million Tang Yuan to the territory directly under Paradise Island, and the fiscal and tax revenue of the territory reached 34.61 million Tang Yuan, with a total of more than 4,600 Tang Yuan, most of which were used for the construction of various basic facilities and education and health, forming a relatively complete social system.
According to statistics at the end of 1864;
The immigrant population of the Paradise Island Territory directly under the royal family reached 3.516 million, and the seven major cities led by New Xi'an Donggang absorbed 2.21 million people, accounting for about 2/3 of the total, and more than 1.3 million people were distributed in the scattered towns and villages.
Except for the two cities of New Xi'an and Donggang, the rest are all agricultural cities, with only a small number of rice mills, flour mills, oil mills, canneries and other enterprises, and the proportion of industrialization does not exceed 20%.
The industrial development of Paradise Island is concentrated in the two cities of New Xi'an and Donggang, especially New Xi'an, the seventh largest metropolis with a population of one million in the empire, and has successively built steel mills, more than a dozen large and medium-sized cement factories and shipbuilding plants, three sugar mills of considerable scale, more than a dozen pig slaughtering enterprises and some food processing factories and canning factories, with a relatively complete range of industrial production capacity.
Paradise Island, near the equator, has a rich geographical and climatic layer, with a typical tropical oceanic climate and a rainy and humid tropical rainforest climate, and the tropical melons and fruits produced here are made into canned fruits and exported to the North American continent and Europe, which is a very popular bulk export product.
Besides
New Xi'an also vigorously developed tobacco, spices, cane sugar and natural rubber plantation, and formed a certain scale of industrial advantages, the export of cane sugar spices in addition to meet the needs of the empire, but also exported to East Asia, Central and South America and Europe, can obtain tens of millions of Tang Yuan of stable income every year.
Taking advantage of its tropical seaside location and proximity to the southwestern Pacific fishing grounds with many islands and reefs, New Xi'an has actively developed the marine fishing industry, and has established a fishing fleet that ranks second in the empire after Seattle's commercial fishing fleet, and has penetrated deep into the surrounding Sulawesi Islands, Luzon Islands, and even as far as the Brahman Islands to fish, with an astonishing amount of fish.
Local specialties such as dried salted fish, dried salted shrimp and canned fish without spines are all special products that can be exported in large quantities.
Objectively speaking
As the only overseas territory among the top ten cities of the empire, New Xi'an is far inferior to the empire's native metropolises, and there is a big gap.
At the end of 1864, the value of industrial output was only 36.6 per cent, while agricultural output still accounted for an absolute majority of more than 52 per cent, with commercial trade and the tertiary industry accounting for the remainder.
Compared with the empire's native metropolis, the biggest advantage of New Xi'an is its geographical proximity to Southeast Asia, both immigration and goods export are closer to the mainland, product exports are more convenient, grain, flour, oil and sugar have a huge consumer market.
New Xi'an is a metropolis full of strong Chinese architectural style, the roads are wide and smooth, the green belt is divided by flowers all year round, and the buildings on both sides of the street are heavy eaves and arches, and the height is staggered.
Looking at the past at a glance, people mistakenly think that they dream back to Xi'an City in the Han and Tang dynasties.
The urban architecture absorbs the tall and magnificent characteristics of the Han and Tang dynasties and the beautiful and dignified style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and organically integrates them into one, forming a unique island style.
There is no shortage of 8~9-storey high-rise buildings here, but without exception, they all use big red colonnades and cornices, and the unique Chinese doors and windows make these high-rise buildings look elegant and dignified, and highly recognizable.
In stations and public places, a wide range of wind and rain corridors and palace-like structures are used, highlighting the unique charm of oriental architecture.
Like the large cities with a population of one million in the empire itself, New Xi'an also banned horse-drawn carriages, ox carts and other animal-powered vehicles from entering, and promoted trams and automobiles in an all-round way, and pedal tricycles and rickshaws for short-distance travel, and horse-drawn carriages were basically invisible on the streets.
Mosquitoes and flies are abundant in the tropics, and delicate horses are susceptible to disease and death, so ox carts are the most common here, but they are forbidden to enter the city.
Blooming all year round, quiet and peaceful, sunny and pleasant, New Xi'an has earned the reputation of "Flower City" and is an extremely livable metropolis.
As an important node city of the golden shipping route in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, New Xi'an was originally the first city for mainland immigrants to set foot, most of the Chinese immigrants passing through here would go ashore to rest, the weak and sick were treated, and the ships were supplied with coal, clean water, vegetables, fruits and grains, and a large number of needs promoted the continuous prosperity of the city.
This after July 1864
In order to alleviate the severe congestion at the port, the port where the migrants landed was changed to Aber Port, which is more than 260 kilometers east of the new Xi'an Port, where the "Dahekou City" is located.
Dahekou City is an agricultural city belonging to the new Xi'an urban agglomeration, bordering the endless Pacific Ocean in the south, and a mighty Mabera Desert River in the east, not far from Jiuxing Town.
Dahekou City is located on the western side of the estuary, and there are a series of islands and harbors on the periphery, forming a very advantageous port city geographical conditions, this is an important city with a population of about 210,000.
Since becoming a port of entry, Dahekou City has taken a ride on economic development, with as many as 500,000 or 600,000 Chinese immigrants returning to the port every year for supplies, hundreds of large migrant ships needing a staggering amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, grain, coal and clean water, and the strong demand has created many jobs and promoted the rapid prosperity of the city.
As a metropolis with a population of more than one million, the development of industrial categories is relatively mature and complete, and the role of immigration and transshipment business in stimulating the city's economy is no longer obvious.
This big cake smashed on the head of Dahekou City, and it was obviously different.
After so many immigrants every year, a little bit of picking a few to stay can strengthen the weakness of the local economy, culture and education, and old Chinese medicine doctors, blacksmiths, leathermen, carpenters, stonemasons, pottery and porcelain craftsmen or pear orchard families are all essential nutrients for a city.
New Xi'an doesn't want it, it doesn't mean that Dahekou City doesn't need it!
If you take a handful of it, you can eat it with a mouthful of oil.
