Chapter 742: The Soldiers Pressed the Realm

Inside the old town of Batavia.

The Governor's Palace of the Dutch East Indies is a two-storey slew of Dutch-style buildings with an unpretentious appearance, the only thing that shows its identity is a high flagpole at the entrance with the flag of the Kingdom of the Netherlands flying.

In the governor's office on the second floor.

The Dutch colonial governor Poce's collar was ripped open irritably, and his hairy chest could be faintly seen, and he held a glass of whiskey in his hand, raised his hand and took a sip before saying;

"I knew, I knew it was going to turn out like this. The East Indies, to which the kingdom belongs, are like a courtyard full of bacon, and they will definitely usher in dangerous snatchers, either the Tang Kingdom or others. ”

"Your Excellency the Governor, based on the good interaction between the Queen's Government and the European powers, the threat from Europe can be completely ruled out."

"General Michels, thank you for stating a simple and useless nonsense. Now we are Dutch girls standing on the side of the street leaning on the door and laughing, whether it is the British, the French, the Germans, the Tang people or even the Fuso, as long as we come to patronize, we have to greet them with a smile. Pray that they will be happy and leave, and don't rape and then kill, and then throw their corpses into the wilderness. ”

Governor Pose used a vulgar analogy, then tilted his head and poured the remaining whiskey from the glass into his mouth, swallowing it with a "grunt", and his face flushed.

General Michels shrugged his shoulders in disapproval, and he glanced at the lieutenant Sir Van Basten, who smiled helplessly.

General Michels said; "I don't refute the first few, but you mentioned the Japanese people, which makes me feel very uncomfortable."

"Admit it, Your Excellency General, after the Fuso people won the victory in the Sino-Japanese War, it has been widely recognized internationally that their naval combat effectiveness has been ranked among the naval powers, much stronger than ours."

"Alas, I really didn't expect that a dog from the Tang Kingdom would also walk in front of the glorious Dutch Kingdom that once spanned the seven seas. Your Excellency, I cannot refute your words. ”

"The strength of the strength will inevitably lead to the expansion of ambitions, no matter how we retreat, the Tang Empire can always find an excuse to go to war. Cheer up, gentlemen, for the Queen's Colony is about to face an unprecedented war. Governor Pose said with a solemn expression.

He walked over, looked at the few people in front of him with stern eyes, and said in an accentuated tone;

"The colony of the East Indies is the foundation of the stability and prosperity of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the home where we have been in business for 300 years, our territory, where we have nothing to fear.

I don't expect you to defeat a powerful enemy at sea with those few small sampans, that is neither realistic nor possible.

Our main battlefield is on land, in every city and forest, in every mountain and island, and the royal army will fight to the death against a formidable enemy.

Kalimantan, Sumatra or elsewhere, each is a separate battlefield.

Completely predictable

It will be a long and arduous war, and the Dutch royal family will also carry out active diplomatic activities in Europe, to gain the sympathy and support of more countries, and to put pressure on the aggressor.

Gentlemen, the time has come to test us......"

Due to the small number of people, the Dutch colonial government practiced minimalist colonial rule, ruling the most likely large territory with the least number of men.

The colonial structure of the Viceroyalty of the Dutch East Indies was very simple, consisting of a seven-member council, headed by His Excellency the Governor appointed by the Queen, in addition to the Speaker, the Superior Commercial Commissioner and Deputy Governor, the Superior Commercial Commissioner and Inspector, the Superior Commercial Commissioner and the Justice, the Superior Commercial Commissioner and the Magistrate, the Superior Commercial Commissioner and the Tax Officer, the Superior Commissioner of Commerce, and the Secretary of the Governor's Office, which were responsible for all political, economic and military affairs of the colony.

The Governor's Office implements a tax package system for all regions and cities in the subordinate colonies, with local indigenous chiefs and overseas Chinese leaders serving as tax collectors. Tax-payers of Chinese descent in Batavia called it "Kapitan", an official position granted by the Queen's colonial government.

The "Kapitan" has a court in the old city of Batavia, a prison station, and a group of tax collectors, thugs and private armed forces around the "Kapitan" adults.

End of the 19th century

The total population of the entire Dutch East Indies is about 13.5 million, and the white Dutch, Dutch-Indians, or white immigrants from other countries at the top of colonial rule account for only 7.3% of the total population, which is worth more than one million people.

Among them

For every 100 whites on the island of Java, more than half are Dutch-Indians, and more than half of white Europeans have chosen native or mixed-race spouses, which is transnational. The white people of mixed race born of marriage are called Dutch-Indians.

In the entire colony of the Dutch East Indies, the proportion of Dutch Indians remained high all year round, followed by low-level white immigrants from Europe, whose countries of origin were very complex, including the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, etc., which was the second largest source of local white ethnic groups.

The first generation of white immigrants from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the colonies of the Dutch East Indies, totaled more than 100,000, about 3 to 4,000 new immigrants a year.

For more than a decade

The Kingdom of the Netherlands had increased its immigration to the East Indies colonies, and before that, there were fewer than 1,000 white immigrants per year, with a minimum of 73 in the early 19th century.

From the beginning of the 16th century to the end of the 19th century. The Dutch colonized the East Indies for more than 300 years, and the real boom in immigration to the East came after the opening of the Suez Canal.

Population scarcity has always been the Achilles heel of the Dutch Kingdom, but as a strong, aggressive, and adventurous maritime people, it is by no means the character of the Dutch to be captured under the threat of the Tang Empire.

In the secret talks of the high-level officials of the Governor's Palace, in the face of the critical situation of the imminent large-scale invasion of the Tang State, it is not surprising that the principle of "adapting measures to local conditions and resisting stubbornly" was formulated.

They have no 3rd way to go except to resist or surrender.

The Governorate of the Dutch East Indies had been waging colonial wars for many years, and they were very familiar with the situation in this western Pacific island, and they were confident that they would be able to drag on the war until the day when the Tang Empire was exhausted.

Before that

The Royal Dutch Army's war to conquer Aceh lasted 25 years since March 1873, making it the longest bloody conquest.

In March 1873, the Netherlands sent warships to invade Aceh, provoking the Aceh War.

In January of the following year, the Dutch army, which launched a large-scale attack, defeated the army of the Kingdom of Aceh with advanced firearms, and occupied its capital of Greater Aceh and the royal palace.

In early 1874, the Netherlands announced the formal annexation of Aceh.

However, this was only the prelude to a much longer war of conquest, and instead of submitting to the Dutch colonists, the tenacious local natives launched a large-scale organized revolt.

The local feudal lords of Aceh supported the new Sudan-Dan and led the people of Aceh to continue the struggle against the Dutch, and the indigenous rebels who retreated to the jungle frequently counterattacked, and the entire Aceh region was on fire.

After the 80s, the well-known sect leaders of Aceh, such as Dugu Uma and Dugu Tyro, successively launched a large-scale "holy war" to defend the sect and drive out the invading infidels, adopted guerrilla tactics, and dealt a heavy blow to the Dutch colonial army in different ways.

After 1894, the Dutch colonists changed the original method of unilateral military suppression, and adopted a new strategy of holding the defensive line, bribing the local feudal princes and nobles with money and power, and dividing and isolating the rebels, which greatly weakened the rebels.

It continues to this day

The 25-year war has brought great devastation to the entire Aceh region, leaving vast tracts of countryside deserted and countless people killed in blockades and strangulations.

Before the war, the original Kingdom of Aceh had a population of more than 2.37 million people, making it a relatively wealthy and powerful Southeast Asian country.

Now

According to incomplete statistics, the population of the entire Aceh region has dropped by more than half, countless old and young women and children have died of hunger and heat in the jungle, and more than seventy percent of villages and towns have been destroyed by war.

To this day, tens of thousands of rebels are still active in the jungle, fighting for 10 years.

In order to extinguish the resistance in Aceh, the Dutch colonial governor Poes sent many troops from Java to support the army led by Michels.

Only these two years

The 13,700-strong army supporting the Aceh battlefield alone led to anti-Dutch uprisings in many areas of the Batak region of northern Sumatra, with General Michels running amok in the Batak region.

Enraged, the usually hard-line governor Pois sent two more troops to Sumatra at the end of last year and in January this year, bringing the total number of reinforcements to more than 11,000.

After repeated reinforcements, the total number of Dutch troops on Sumatra alone reached more than 55,000 people, which is only the main force of the white people, not counting the local indigenous servant army.

Such a situation even caused concern in Europe, said Balde, the colonial minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in a letter to Pouss;

The Dutch transferred a large number of troops from Java to Sumatra, and the defense force on the island of Java would be weakened, and there were many kingdoms on the island of Java, and in the event of an anti-Dutch incident, the colonial government would not be able to deal with it, and reminded him to guard against the serious risk of getting out of control.

Who knows

After the serious deterioration of relations between Tang and Dutch, Governor Pose sent troops to reinforce Sumatra, which became a clever way to prevent trouble before it happened, and won unanimous praise in the Dutch Kingdom, which no one could have imagined.

Now, the military deployment of the governor of the Dutch East Indies in the islands has been put in place, waiting for the Tang Empire army to attack, and then teaching the other party a hard lesson with an iron fist.

The last hope of holding on to this colony rested entirely on the Royal Army.

"Oh no, Mr. Governor, there are a large number of enemy fleets off the coast of Batavia, and there are very many of them......" It was the Governor's secretary Wiltman who suddenly broke in, and the look of panic on his face could not be concealed at all.

Hear this

The faces of everyone present changed, it was one thing to expect this day, and it was another thing to really face the pressure of the soldiers.
