Chapter 8: Receipts

Dock area, East Bailang Dockyard.

Once upon a time, it was a large shipyard designed and built by the Kingdom of Rune to conquer the Southern Continent, and it was silent for a while after completing its mission. But with the process of industrialization, it has been slightly transformed and given a new mission, which has made it active again, even more than before.

Today, it is the hub of Beckland's waterway transport, with five berths ranging from low to high, allowing almost any vessel to dock flush.

This design greatly facilitates shipping, so it is no exaggeration to say that any medium-sized cargo ship coming to Beckland will definitely anchor here.

At two o'clock in the afternoon, Varina came to the vicinity of the dock.

He pretended to be impressed by Susan's clever "trick", and took the opportunity to ask her a lot of relevant news, and finally agreed to come here to receive the goods on Susan's behalf, which made both parties satisfied.

Varina found the ship, only to learn that the captain had gone to a nearby Workers' Union tavern, so he had to look for it again.

He needs to discuss the handover of the goods with the captain before he can go to the dockers' association to hire workers to transport the goods back to the factory, and most importantly, he needs the captain's "cargo list".

The Workers' Union Tavern was much bigger than the Brave Bar, but luckily it was two o'clock in the afternoon and there weren't many people drinking. Varina glanced around and saw the iconic dark blue two-horned hat on the table of a middle-aged man with a vicissitudes of life.

He walked over directly and asked:

"Captain Trefrey?"

The middle-aged man looked up at him, "Yes, you are?" ”

"I was sent by the Xilun Textile Factory to receive the goods."

Varina took out the "Letter of Acceptance" that Susan had given him from his trouser pocket, stamped with the factory seal, and placed it in front of the man.

Captain Tfrey opened the folded note, glanced at it, and returned it to Varina, grunting.

He gulped down the remnants of the wine in the glass, put the glass on the table, grabbed the two-horned hat in his hand, got up and said:

"Let's go, follow me back to the boat."

In the captain's room, Tefrey took out the well-painted Cargo List from a small locked box and handed it to Varina.

For him, this is a necessary step. But in reality, Varina has another copy given to him by Susan, which is delivered in advance through the kingdom's communication system.

Varina opened it in person, and after making sure that there were no problems with the list, he confirmed: "I can go and hire workers now?" ”

"Of course." Tfrey nodded.

"I need a little help," Varina looked at the captain, "I don't know how many workers should be hired?" ”

Captain Tfrey smiled.

He reached out and patted Varina on the shoulder, saying, "This is something the dockers need to worry about, you just need to report the list to them." ”

"Thank you for your advice."

Varina thanked him and left, heading to the Dockers' Association not far away.

It is a small two-story yellow building that has been occupied by the Dead Eels and remodeled to use the first floor as an office hall for employers.

The furnishings of the hall were quite simple, with a row of benches on either side of the entrance, on which a few people sat sparsely, and directly opposite was a long counter with a dozen bookkeepers who looked to be fifteen or sixteen years old.

He explained his intentions, and the boy opposite hurriedly jotted down the key information, and was about to go up to the second floor with the note.

"Wait," Varina called out to the boy, "I'd like to borrow the bathroom here, okay?" ”

The boy nodded: "Yes, the bathroom is on the second floor, opposite the staircase, but the rest of the second floor is forbidden to outsiders." ”

The two went upstairs together, and the boy went straight to the innermost room, where Varina entered the bathroom.

The layout of the second floor is not complicated, and Varina can roughly grasp it by scanning it before entering the bathroom.

Coming up the stairs, directly across from the bathroom, to the left is a long hallway leading to the innermost office, flanked by several other rooms whose purpose Varina could not see due to limited viewing angles.

The boy entered the office, walked up to a red-haired man, and handed over a note, "Mr. Kirk, delivery order from the Silen Textile Mill. ”

Kirk took the note and waved the boy away as he read.

He quickly looked up again and shouted, "Quaid, you take 50 people and go and deliver this shipment." ”

……

When Varina came out of the bathroom, she saw two people waiting at the door, the boy and a fierce-looking man.

"Sir, this is Mr. Quaid who will help you deliver the goods, and he will arrange everything."

The boy went downstairs on his own after introducing him, and Quaid took the initiative to say, "Let's go, let's go find someone first." ”

Varina followed him out of the small building of the workers' association and soon came to a clearing on the corner.

A large group of well-dressed laborers had gathered in the clearing, and they saw Quaid and Varina in the distance, and they had approached spontaneously before they could get closer.

"Pay attention to the rules and don't let the guests see the joke!"

Quaid spoke, and the crowd's crowding and pushing movements immediately subsided most of the time, and soon, they quieted down, focusing only on Quaid.

"Delivery to the Silen textile mill, 8pence, I only need 50."

As soon as the words fell, the crowd immediately became chaotic again, and this time, Quaid did not speak again.

After a while, the crowd selected 50 people according to their own rules, and the rest of the people showed a look of loss and dispersed.

Varina witnessed the whole process, although his face was silent, but such a scene actually made his heart shake a lot. He knew that the life of the low-level workers was not easy, but he didn't expect it to be so difficult. For 8 pence, he saw many people either with nosebleeds or dark eyes, but still smiling.

And that's still now!

When the Grain Act is repealed, they will have a harder time.

And that's not the limit!

Varina thought of the future "Beckland Smog Incident" and felt a chill in her heart.

"Let's go, where does the ship stop?"

Quaid's voice brought Varina's mind back to reality, and he took one last look at the crowd to lead the way.

Arriving at the ship, Varina found that Captain Tefrey had already arranged for the men to begin unloading while he had brought them over.

Workers and sailors work together to unload the cargo from the ship little by little, like ants moving. During this time, Varina and the captain stood aside, each holding a list to reconcile.

After a long time, when the two sides had counted correctly, Varina handed over the Letter of Receipt to Tefre, and returned to the Siren Textile Mill with the goods.

After pushing Quaid to Susan, the rest of the matter was also handed back into Susan's hands, and Varina breathed a sigh of relief.

"Didn't mess things up, well, in a two-fold sense."
