Chapter 20: Finding the Person
Eight o'clock in the morning, Xilun Textile Mill.
John and Susan were surprised to find that Varina, who had always arrived early, was actually late this time.
Susan casually asked, "You swapped shifts again?" ”
"No," John was puzzled, "when he got off work yesterday, he said he was going to invite me to coffee today, so he couldn't stop coming because of that." ”
"That's weird...... Is it oversleeping? ”
Susan said, suddenly remembering something, and asked, "Well, do you think we should tell Mr. Luca about this?" ”
"Don't do it yet."
John advised: "There is no need to let him be punished, just let him make amends when he comes." ”
"Well, that's fine." Susan nodded.
As noon approached, they probably felt that Varina was going to miss work today.
They planned to wait until the afternoon, when Varina did not come, to tell Mr. Luca.
At noon, they went out to eat together.
The waiter at the café recognized them and took the initiative to ask, "Two guests, do you have a colleague who didn't come to work today?" ”
"How do you know?" John and Susan asked in surprise, in unison.
The waiter subconsciously looked left and right, then lowered his voice and said:
"Last night, he came here for dinner, and it turned out that a few gangsters were getting him in trouble."
"The people behind chased him out, don't ask me about the rest, I don't know anything."
After the waiter said these two words, he turned his head and walked away quickly, as if he didn't want to be too involved.
John and Susan glanced at each other, and both saw the confusion in each other's eyes - "When did Varina get into the gang?" ”
It's really hard to believe such a statement.
Back at the factory, the two men went to Mr. Luca's office and told him what they knew.
Mr. Luca nodded his head in understanding, and then let them go back to work.
……
At eight o'clock in the morning, Varina woke up on the couch at the bar.
He opened the door to the billiard room and saw that the bar was open, and a few handymaids were cleaning up the mess left by the guests last night.
Varina's mind moved, and she walked up to a middle-aged maid who was sweeping the floor and asked:
"Hello, do you know where the 'Working Class Housing Improvement Association' is in the Bridge District?"
She was obviously a little surprised by Varina's sudden questioning, and only after a few words did she reply, "In the middle of White Rum Street, about three or four blocks from here. ”
"Is it near that subway station near the East End?" Varina asked confirmatively.
"On a street."
Varina nodded, thanked him, and left the bar.
The main rental channels that he can access now are as follows:
Newspapers, housing improvement companies, working-class housing improvement associations, and signs hung up by private individuals outside houses.
But when it comes to value for money, it is clear that the Working Class Housing Improvement Association is the most suitable option.
After a trip to White Rum Street, Varina found a new place to live by noon—a one-bedroom apartment that shared a bathroom with three neighbors, similar to his previous one.
After finding a restaurant for lunch, Varina went to some more shops to buy household items and a change of clothes, and it wasn't until two o'clock in the afternoon that he got a private space that was similar to the one before, but more simply furnished.
Sitting on the bed, Varina suddenly felt a sense of emptiness at a loss.
He has become accustomed to the feeling of being busy at work every day, and even on the rare days off, he has a lot of things to do, such as purchasing consumables, sorting out housekeeping, and so on.
This is the first time there has been no to-do list like today.
He wanted to take advantage of this time to read a book for a while, but he couldn't calm down, so he went out and did something he didn't plan to do right now—look for Hugh Dilcha.
This "Judge" lady in the original book is the only channel that Varina can think of to contact another circle of extraordinary people.
In Beckland, there are roughly three gatherings of the Extraordinary mentioned in the original book.
The party presided over by the old gentleman "Wisdom Eye" counted as one, and Mr. Aurora also presided over one.
In addition to this, there is a higher-end circle - that is the channel for Miss Sharon to obtain the "Gatekeeper" magical items in the future.
Whether or not there is an "Assassin" potion recipe in the "Eye of Wisdom", Varina can't be sure, but he can be sure that Mr. A must have.
He went out and bought a copy of the Beckland Post, and then followed the ad instructions to find a small detective agency in the Joe Wood area.
Varina adjusted the angle of the cap to cover the lump at the back of her head, then pushed the door in.
"Okay, I'm Detective Ron, what help do you need?"
Seeing that a guest came to the door, the detective who claimed to be Ron greeted him in person, and his attitude was very eager. As he directed Varina to the hospitality area, he habitually looked at the characteristics of his employer.
"I want to entrust you to find someone, I don't know how to charge?"
"About 4 pounds," Detective Ron explained, "The average task is about 4 pounds, and the specific fee will fluctuate a little bit depending on the difficulty. ”
"I wonder what the characteristics of the person you're looking for, or the portrait or something?"
Varina extracted the key words from memory and described them as clearly as she could:
"It was a very small but dignified lady named Hugh Dilcha, who was supposed to be a bounty hunter with a certain reputation in the East End, and had dealt with several gangsters."
"That's probably it, I want to find this lady and entrust her with something."
"Very good, fairly clearly described."
Detective Ron rubbed the short beard of his chin, quickly jotted down the features on a piece of paper, and confirmed, "So, after finding that lady, I should help you make a meeting agreement?" ”
"Yes," Varina nodded, "and I hope to meet as soon as possible, so I can take the time to come to you every day to check on the situation." ”
"Since the other party is a bounty hunter, there should be no problem."
Detective Ron said, "If your description is true, it will not be difficult to find her, but in terms of time, it depends on a little luck. ”
The two agreed and signed the contract, and after signing the contract, Varina gave an advance payment of £1 and left with the contract.
……
Eight o'clock in the evening, the Bar of the Brave.
Varina holds a glass of "half and half" and finds Caspars in the card room.
Perhaps it had been agreed a long time ago, but Caspars did not participate in the gambling game, but just sat on the side to recuperate.
Varina stepped forward and woke up the other party and got the answer he wanted:
"The party is open, I've already said hello, I'll take you there now."
He limped ahead, leading Varina from the bar's kitchen to the alley behind, in front of a darkly lit house.
"Two pounds, we'll say yes."
Caspars handed out an iron mask that only covered the top half of his face, and demanded payment at the same time.
Varina took the money out of the way, then put on her mask, pressed down the brim of her hat, and pulled up her stand collar.
Seeing that he was ready, Caspars knocked rhythmically on the door.
