Chapter 6: The Legend (The First Shift Asks for a Monthly Pass)

The main entrance to the catacombs is in Purgatory Square, near the Intis Observatory, and the inclusive entrance building is supported by pillars, and at the top is a dome covered with stone reliefs, like a shrunken memorial or the above-ground part of a large mausoleum.

By the time Lumien arrived, twenty or thirty people had gathered around the steps below, dressed differently but in a more formal manner, both men and women.

Standing at the front of these people was a man in his thirties in a blue vest and yellow trousers, with slightly curly brown hair, a thick beard, slightly upturned eyes, and an iron-black calcium carbide lamp in his hand.

He said to the twenty or thirty men in a loud voice:

"I'm Kendall, one of the caretakers of the catacombs, and I'm in charge of showing you around the ossuary today.

"Isn't everyone ready with a white candle? If not, please let me know immediately. ”

Tourist? Lumian set his eyes on the stone staircase behind Kendall.

It stretched all the way down, into the thick darkness, with no end in sight.

Not far from Kendal, there was an open, heavy gate, made of thick wood, half painted with the emblem of the sun in golden paint, and half filled with solid triangles filled with symbols such as steam, levers, and gears.

After receiving a confirmed answer, Kendall lit the calcium carbide lamp and turned to go underground, followed by the visitors, some carrying horse lanterns.

Lumien was four or five meters behind them, and took the calcium carbide lamp he had obtained from Ramaya, and walked down the stone staircase without slowness.

With his ears that have been superbly promoted, it is not difficult to hear the introductions made by Kendall, the tomb keeper, at the forefront:

"After 138 stairs, 26 meters below the city streets of Trier, you will see the bones of nearly 50 generations of Trier.

"Forty-seven years ago, there was no land for the dead to be buried in places like the Cemetery of the Innocent and the Cemetery of the Priests, white bones were thrown everywhere, and the stench caused the surrounding residents to take to the streets every day to protest and get the town hall to take the cemetery out of the city......

"In the end, the town hall chose to go underground, and they connected some of the burials from the Quaternary with a number of underground quarries nearby, creating a very, very, very large tomb...... You're only going to be able to visit some of them today......" Kendall's voice echoed through the quiet, dark staircase with no end in sight, and the fear of the tomb and the underground was born.

Descending the stairs, Lumien finally saw a path separated by stone pillars and a sandwich wall.

Unlike other places in the underworld, this road has obviously been repaired and maintained on a daily basis, and there are no potholes at all, it is flat and spacious, but it is quite gloomy, and from time to time there are gusts of cold wind blowing.

On this road, there are gas lamps at intervals, which emit a yellowish glow, allowing light and darkness to intersect and stretch into the distance.

Kendall, dressed in a blue vest, once again reminded visitors:

"You must follow me closely, and you must not act alone!

"There are so many areas of the underground that we don't know about, and once you're lost, it's hard to find them again.

"Don't wander around when you enter the tombs, there are some roads that lead to deeper tombs, where the Quaternary evil spirits who hide in the darkness sleep, praise the sun and praise the light, and only by walking on the routes confirmed by the priests can all dangers be avoided."

Some visitors sang in praise of the sun with open arms, while others drew triangles on their chests.

After following the tomb keeper Kendall and them for nearly two hundred meters, Lumian saw the catacombs.

There is a natural formed and later remodeled megalithic doorway, flanked by delicate reliefs such as skulls, bony arms, sunflowers, and steam symbols.

The topmost lintel bears two inscriptions in Intis

"Stop!

"Ahead is the Empire of Death!"

Kendal, the caretaker of the tomb, turned again and said to the visitors:

"You can put out the lantern and light the white candle, everybody has to do it!

"If you don't want to go into the tomb, you can take a stroll around here, but don't go too far, otherwise it's easy to get lost and you'll be in trouble.

"After entering the tomb, if you accidentally break away from the line, don't be nervous, look for the street sign, if there is no street sign, look up, follow the black line drawn on the top of the tomb, and it will continue to the main entrance......"

Not long after, the light of the lantern went out, and orange candles jumped out of the darkness.

The visitors also held up white candles and followed Kendall into the catacombs.

Lumian watched from afar, as if he saw a little yellowish firelight merge into a stream, slowly swimming into the depths of darkness.

He didn't go inside, but carried a carbide lamp and walked around the tomb gate to find the fake wizard Ostatrul.

A few minutes later, Lumien saw a bonfire.

It was next to a pillar, and the stone wall above it was covered with wet moss.

Behind the campfire sat a man in a hooded black robe, with a high nose, dark brown eyes, and a flaxen beard that covered his chin, staring at the beating of the flames.

Lumian walked over and asked directly:

"You're Ostatrul?"

The hooded man raised his head, looked at Lumian, and said in a deliberately suppressed, magnetic and deep voice:

"Lost soul, why did you come to me?"

Fire and darkness alternate in Aosta. Trull's face jumped, making it impossible to tell his exact age, and one could only guess that he might be less than thirty years old, or maybe close to forty.

Aosta. Trull said in a low, dumb and somewhat magnetic voice:

"Witchcraft is a taboo, witchcraft is a curse, and I will not be willing to help."

"What do you need me to do?" Lumian asked urgently.

Aosta spoke in a deep voice:

"The principle of witchcraft is an equivalent exchange, you tell me first what help you want to get."

Lumian resisted the urge to taunt and provoke, and his expression suddenly became painful:

"I lost all my loved ones, I felt abandoned by the world, I couldn't sleep every night, every night, I wanted to forget these things and start my life again."

Aosta. Trull observed Lumian's expression and found no falsehood.

He nodded slightly:

"I've lost a lot too, it's a curse from witchcraft, I can understand your feelings and thoughts.

"But it's hard to forget the pain."

"Okay......" Lumian let out a long sigh and turned around, ready to leave.

Aosta quickly stopped him:

"Wait a minute, it's hard not to say there's no way."

"Really?" Lumian jerked his head back, excitement written all over his face.

Aosta nodded slightly:

"Nope." Lumien shook his head.

Aosta glanced at the burning bonfire and explained simply:

"There is a turbid spring in one of the ossuaries in the catacombs, it is called the Samaritan Woman's Spring, also known as the Fountain of Forgetting, the Fountain of Forgetting, and if you drink it, you will forget all the pain completely.

"There were many corpses singing, singing, 'Drink the water of happiness and forget the original pain.'"

"I can help you get it, but the principle of equivalent exchange cannot be violated, you need to give me 100 Filkin."

Lumian had listened attentively, but the misalignment of the price made him feel funny.

So the precious spring water is not as good as the two months' salary of a trainee waiter?

Lumian's eyes widened, and he rushed to Aosta's side, pressed his shoulder, and said, "Really? ”

Aosta opened his palm and nodded calmly:

"It's a wizard's promise."

"Good, good!" Lumian replied excitedly, "But I didn't bring so much money, I'll go back now, and I'll come here tomorrow to find you?" ”

Aosta is satisfied:

"No problem."

Lumian thanked him repeatedly, picked up the carbide lamp, and left the area excitedly.

When he was out of Aosta's sight, he retracted his smile, raised his right palm, and sniffed the less obvious smell of perfume.

Before arriving at the observatory area, he sprayed his right hand with some inferior perfume, which had just been deliberately touched by Aosta's body.

All the way back to the ground, Lumien sat down behind the pillar, hid himself, and waited patiently.

The sky was getting darker, and as dusk was approaching, he smelled the faint and familiar smell of perfume.

Lumian didn't rush to follow, and it took a while before he stepped out of his hiding place, following the scent of Aosta's remains, so far away that he could barely see the other party's figure.

Horse-drawn carriages passed by him, and from time to time exaggerated mechanical creations appeared.
