0352 [Zen Worship Buddha]

Due to the excessive exploitation of the imperial court, the local government treasury was empty, and the small people had no money to spare.

A lot of money and grain were transported from Hanzhong, but Lizhou was a mess, and Zhu Ming was required to take out military funds to help the people.

After more than two months of confrontation at Jianmen and Zitong, the consumption of military rations was serious, and if we count those captured from officers and men, we can at most maintain the existing army until March next year.

"We have to get the rich to donate money and food." Zhu Ming said.

Gao Jingshan reminded: "Of course, we have to start with the rich, but not now, we have to wait for next year's summer grain harvest!" Otherwise, these rich people will be widely publicized, and the small people will be ignorant and ignorant, and the name of benevolence and righteousness that the general has won so hard will be lost. After all, this is not Hanzhong, nor is it Jinzhou. ”

The Zhu family's father and son are in Hanzhong and Jinzhou, and the prestige of the people is extremely high, so it is naturally difficult for the rich to manipulate public opinion.

And in the Chengdu Plain, Zhu Ming belongs to outsiders.

When they first arrived, their foundation was not stable, and they suddenly let the rich people apportion, and these rich people will definitely pass on their losses, and then frantically spread rumors and smear them. After the small people were exploited by the rich, they would only hate Zhu Ming, and benevolence and righteousness would instantly turn into brutality.

Gao Jingshan gave Chengdu's governance strategy: "The general issued a tax reduction decree, which has initially won the trust of the people. The most urgent task at the moment is to rectify the rule of officials. Arrange for henchmen to be in charge of household registration and justice, retry the accumulated unjust cases, take the opportunity to remove and replace the law-breaking officials, and then severely punish the children of the big clan. In this way, it will be above board, not only to establish authority in the big clan, but also to establish faith and morality in the people. In this way, Chengdu can be gradually controlled, and the tax will be a matter of course by next summer. ”

Shi Yuangong asked: "Our army's grain and grass can only last until March next year, where can we find the remaining two or three months of food?" ”

Gao Jingshan pointed to the north: "Zhaojue Temple in the north of the city!" ”

"Wonderful!"

Shi Yuangong clapped his hands and praised him for coming to Chengdu several times: "Not only Buddhist temples, but also Taoist temples can be cleaned up." ”

Gao Jingshan said: "Although Mr. Shi has been to Chengdu and inquired about the news among the people, he can only get a glimpse of it. Zhaojue Temple was built in the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty and was extremely prosperous in the five dynasties. In the early years of the dynasty, the Great Song army burned and looted, and the Zhaojue Temple was abandoned and dilapidated. But decades later, it flourished again. During the period of Shenzong, it was already a big tail, and Lu Dafang asked the court to change Zhaojue Temple from the temple of descendants to the jungle of Shifang. ”

Zhu Ming felt very magical: "Can the Buddhist temple still have a descendant temple?" ”

Gao Jingshan explained: "The descendants here specifically refer to the children and grandchildren of the disciples. The previous abbot can refer to the next abbot. In the Shifang Jungle, the abbot can be appointed by the government. ”

"I see." Zhu Ming really didn't know this.

It seems that in ancient times there were also means of religious administration, through the appointment of abbots, thus indirectly controlling the temples.

Gao Jingshan continued: "Today's Zhaojue Temple, there are 300 halls, hundreds of monks' houses, and there are thousands of monks who hold degrees alone, and there are also a large number of monks who have no monks. It can be checked that the temple field is three or four hundred hectares, and the hidden field is even more difficult to count. ”

"In this way, the temple field controlled by Zhaojue Temple may be close to 100,000 mu?" Zhu Ming was moved by murderous intent when he heard it.

Gao Jingshan nodded and said: "And most of them are fertile fields in the north of the city!" ”

Zhu Ming stood up with a smile: "Since I have entered Chengdu, I should visit famous temples and monks." ”

Gao Jingshan reminded: "Don't kill too much, the folk reputation of Zhaojue Temple is excellent." ”

Will a temple that occupies nearly 100,000 acres of land really have a good reputation?

Yes!

It is only necessary that when lending usury, the interest is less than that of ordinary landlords. When collecting rent, he is also less than ordinary landlords. In the years of famine, a little more food was given to the victims. The monk was responsible for making friends with the government and celebrities, and this prestige rose all at once.

In the Shenzong Dynasty, the government took back the right to appoint and dismiss the abbot, and the income of Zhaojue Temple needed to be handed over.

Li Jin said in the "Rebuilding Zhaojue Temple": "Zi Temple has 300 permanent fertile soil, clean the field to correct the correction, the year into a thousand couples, the well returns to the temple, and the public shares. There are great sailors, and the money of flowing water; The wealthy family of Shanze is the benefit of the golden cave. Five baht and a wisp, all returned to the temple, and there is no selfish ......"

As can be seen from this article, the lotus root grown in the pond is owned by Zhaojue Temple (the field rent is also estimated). The money for incense donated by believers must be handed over to the government, and it is very likely that they will also have to pay the field tax.

But only a few decades later, the government gradually lost control of Zhaojue Temple, how could the incense money be handed over honestly?

Today's abbot, whose legal name is Yuanwu Keqin, is a generation of virtuous monks, who plays a pivotal role in the history of the development of Zen Buddhism.

He was twice decreed by Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty and appointed as the abbot of Zhaojue Temple (the temple holder held a term of office, and if he wanted to be re-elected, he had to obtain the emperor's permission).

There are more than 500 of his own disciples.

Among them, more than 100 disciples are abbots in other temples, and their influence is all over Sichuan, and even outside Sichuan!

Yuan Wu Keqin is drinking tea, and he is very interested in the tea ceremony. So much so that there were rumors in later generations that his ink treasure "Tea Zen One Taste" was collected in Daitokuji Temple in Japan, and this ink treasure also had a story with a monk Yixiu.

This rumor has not been confirmed, but his letter to his apprentice Shotaka, known as the "Engo Seal Form", does exist in Japan.

The disciple Shaolong held the tea cup and asked, "Zen master, it happened that the emperor summoned him, and the thieves were in Chengdu, do you want to go to Tokyo?" ”

Yuanwu Keqin said: "I am the abbot, I can't go. You are not a Shu person, you can go to it. ”

Shao Long was the patriarch of the Tiger Hill sect of Zen Buddhism, but now he is just an ordinary monk. His master got the Keqin Buddhist language and turned to Shaolong to listen to it, but Shaolong did not fully understand, so he came to Chengdu from Jiangsu and Zhejiang to place orders to seek the Dharma.

Shaolong said: "The disciple listened to the monks, and the thieves entered the city to settle the people, and they did not commit any offence to the people. If so, how should you deal with it? Is it a thief? Is it all yes? ”

Yuan Wu Keqin said: "You call him Zhu Thief now, and you already have prejudices in your heart, why do you want to ask me again?" ”

Shaolong was silent, pondering.

"Zen Master, Zhu ...... The man surnamed Zhu came. A monk stood at the door and said.

Yuanwu Keqin slowly stood up: "Come with me to greet you." ”

Zhu Ming was standing outside the temple gate, looking through Yuanwu Keqin's "Biyan Lu".

This book was written by Yuanwu Keqin when he was in Hunan. At the beginning of Zen Buddhism, there were no words, and there were works in the middle and late Northern Song Dynasty, and "Biyan Lu" was one of them.

"Old monk Keqin, I have seen Zhu Tanyue." Yuanwu Keqin and ten ways.

Zhu Ming said with a smile: "Tan Yue is the meaning of the donor, right?" I'm not here to give alms, but I need relief from Zhaojue Temple. In this way, the Zen master is the benefactor, and the poor have seen the diligent benefactor. ”

Yuanwu Keqin lived for more than 60 years, and he had never met such a shameless person, and he actually called the monk a benefactor when he met. He said calmly: "Please come into the temple and drink tea." ”

Zhu Ming flipped through the "Biyan Lu" and said: "I just read the masterpiece of the Zen master, and this sentence is quite insightful. If you can see it thoroughly, the sky is still the sky, the earth is the earth, the mountains are the mountains, and the water is water. It reminds me of my father's words. ”

"May I ask what Lingzun has to say?" Yuanwu Keqin followed him and said.

Zhu Ming said: "My father once said that there are three realms in life. Seeing the mountains is mountains, and seeing the water is water; Seeing mountains is not mountains, and seeing water is not water; See the mountain is still the mountain, see the water is still the water. ”

Yuanwu Keqin said: "This is the words of Qingyuan Xingsi Zen Master, and Ling Zun is also a person who cultivates Zen. ”

Is there already this passage?

Zhu Ming didn't feel embarrassed either, and asked, "According to the Zen master, am I a mountain or a water?" Is it a general or a thief? ”

Yuanwu Keqin said: "The general and the thief are in one mind. ”

Zhu Ming said: "The Zen master is really a high monk, in a word. If I have enough money and food, I will be a general. If you don't have enough money and food, you are a thief. Please save me, don't let me become a thief. ”

With such a threat of Chiguoguo, Yuanwu Keqin was still calm: "The account books in the temple, the old monks rarely ask, so the general will take them together." Just don't hurt the lives of the monks. ”

Zhu Ming also said: "A monk without a monk must return to the world." ”

Yuanwu Keqin said: "Yes." ”

Zhu Ming said: "There are too many Terada, and some must be confiscated." ”

Yuanwu Keqin said: "Yes." ”

Zhu Ming was particularly surprised: "I won't leave much." ”

Yuanwu Keqin said: "You can let the monks have a full stomach." ”

Zhu Ming said: "The money and grain owed by the tenants must be written off, and the monks will have to cultivate it themselves in the future. ”

Yuanwu Keqin said: "Yes, plowing the field is also a practice. ”

With such cooperation, Zhu Ming really couldn't use a knife to kill people, and sighed again and again: "I finally met a great monk today." ”

Yuanwu Keqin said: "The green tea made by Lingzun is secretly in line with the way of meditation, and the poor monks have long wanted to visit. ”

Zhu Ming said: "My father is in Hanzhong, the Zen master can go, and I can repair a book as a reason." ”

Yuanwu Keqin asked: "Does Tan Yue still want to enter the temple to taste tea and discuss Zen?" ”

"No, it's already been discussed." Zhu Ming said goodbye and asked Zheng Hong to lead the troops to confiscate the temple property.

Yuan Wu Keqin sat cross-legged in the abbot's room, and the pleading voices of monks kept coming from outside.

A load of food was picked up, a frame of money was moved, and the savings of Zhaojue Temple for hundreds of years were used as military funds by Zhu Ming.

As for the tens of thousands of acres of fertile land, some were distributed to local tenants, and some were rewarded to meritorious soldiers.

It also left a lot for Zhaojue Temple, each monk can cultivate two acres of land, and the lotus root field is also left to the monks to eat vegetarian.

The monks of Zhaojue Temple did not dare to resist, and they were all restrained by Yuanwu Keqin.

But there were so many big families who came to see Zhu Ming, but when they couldn't see anyone, they cried outside the yamen.

They sent their own land property to the name of Zhaojue Temple, so as to escape the government's service, and now they have been confiscated by Zhu Ming.

Not only was the land confiscated, but the rents and usury owed by the tenants were also declared invalid by Zhu Ming according to the location.

I can only say that I deserve it!

Even other wealthy families around Chengdu have no sympathy for these guys.

There are various ways to evade taxes, and posting in the temple is the lowest trick. Moreover, the origin of these fields is often unknown, and most of them were obtained through illegal means, and they were afraid that the government would track them down, so they used the name of Zhaojue Temple.

The seizure of the property of Zhaojue Temple is only the beginning.

In the counties under the jurisdiction of Chengdu Prefecture, there are many Buddhist temples and Taoist temples, all of which are rich and oily, enough for Zhu Ming's military rations until next autumn.

Not all of them are eminent monks, there are always a few who want to resist.

In the process of confiscation, more than 200 monks and Taoists were killed.

The rich families in Shu were uneasy, for fear that Zhu Ming would wave a knife at them.
