Chapter 491: The Chinese Navy in "Holiday" (Part II)
The next day, Bohai Shipyard, Longgang District, Jinxi City, Liaoning Province.
The territory of Jinxi City is roughly equivalent to the sum of Chaoyang City and Huludao City in the original time and space, and the Jinxi Port here is a natural ice-free port in northern China, which can currently berth ships under 50,000 tons. As one of China's 15 five-star shipbuilding bases, Bohai Shipyard is located on the city's Hulu Peninsula, adjacent to Jinxi Port.
At this time, in dock No. 3 of the shipyard, a battleship was being refitted. Those who are familiar with the Chinese Navy can recognize at a glance that this is the world's first super-dreadnought-class battleship -- the "Fuxi-class".
At the same time, it is also the most produced battleship in the world, with a total of three countries in production, China, the United States and Germany, and the number of its construction is as many as 24, and it is equipped with the navies of five countries (China, the United States, Germany, and Turkey), not counting other models that have been modified and amplified on its basis. In addition, it has also achieved quite amazing results in previous naval battles, so this class of battleships is very famous in the world, and is praised as a "standard battleship" by the US Navy.
Of course, warships also have a shelf life, and the back waves of the Yangtze River push the front waves, and no matter how superior the warship is, it is impossible to keep it up. No matter how good the Fuxi class is, it is only a product before World War I. What's more, the period before and after World War I was the period of the fastest technological update of ships in history, and it was often the case that a warship had just been launched and was already outdated, just like the speed of computer replacement in later generations.
When the time entered the 30s, the Fuxi class has indeed fallen behind, although its hull design is still very advanced, but after all, the tonnage has been small, and most importantly, its 360 mm main gun has been far behind the times, in the current navy of several top powers, battleships with more firepower have abounded, the main gun is not more than 400 mm, and they are embarrassed to say hello when they go out.
However, when the Fuxi class was revised in the second batch of designs (2. version 0), which takes into account future upgrades and modifications. For example, the hull structure, the size and load-bearing capacity of the turret seat, and the load of the lifting system are designed with margins. By the way, the drawings sold to the United States and Germany were the first batch of Fuxi class (1. Version 0), the design margin is extremely small, and as for whether the United States and Germany will improve the design, it doesn't matter to China.
As early as during the First World War, the Chinese Navy had a plan to upgrade the Fuxi class, but because the war had not been available, and after the end of the First World War, there was no need to worry, it had to be improved anyway, it was better to wait until the relevant subsystems were more advanced. Until last year, Wen Desi felt that the relevant technologies were already relatively powerful, and the preparation of the subsystem was almost complete. Only then did the "Fuxi-level" transformation plan be officially launched.
This is the same as large fire support ships, and it is also for the sake of stimulating domestic demand. Throughout the ages, increasing armament buildup has been an effective means of stimulating domestic demand and expanding the internal market. For example, how did the three virtues of the original time and space get rid of the economic crisis? The mustache's vigorous increase in armament building is one of the means. Of course, the mustache borrowed money to play, so in 1939, when the debt was about to expire, he just didn't want to fight. And China on this plane is completely different, it is very rich, but it is just trying to send the money down, and there is no need to borrow money to support the façade.
The transformation plan of the Fuxi class is a big move, the weapon system, power system, electronic system, and armor must be changed, and basically except for the hull, everything else must be improved and upgraded. However, because the initial design was designed with future improvements in mind, the design redundancy is very large, and many parts are modular, such as weapon systems, so it is much simpler than the improvement of "Ellie".
The one under construction at the Bohai Shipyard is the third ship of the Fuxi class, and it is also 2. The first ship of the 0 version (Chinese self-made version) "Houyi". At this time, the Houyi had been disemboweled, and all weapon systems and superstructures had been demolished.
Leon was standing on the edge of the dock watching as a huge gantry crane lifted a gas turbine and sent it to the power compartment of the ship's hull. At this time, the power compartment of the Houyi was empty, and the original oil-fired boiler and steam turbine had been dismantled.
After inspecting the Dalian shipyard yesterday, he flew here directly on a navy plane early this morning. Comrade Li Ang now has increased the number of gold stars on his epaulettes to three, and yes, he is already a lieutenant general. In September 1923, he was transferred from the Pacific Task Force to the Naval Command as Director of the Naval Armament Bureau, in March 1926 he was transferred to the commander of the Qingdao base, and in May 1928 he was promoted to Vice Admiral and as commander of the Nanyang Detachment. In January of this year, he returned to the Navy Command as Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Navy and Director of the Armament Bureau.
Jin Longyu, general manager of Boship, proudly introduced: "Mr. Li, the Houyi renovation project involves more than 100 projects, the most important of which are the upgrading of the main gun, power system and armor. The original triple 360 mm guns were replaced with twin 420 mm guns, the power system was to be replaced from steam turbines to gas turbines, the original main armor belt was to be upgraded from single-layer armor to composite armor, and the armor in other positions was to be thickened. In addition, there are also tasks such as upgrading the computer system, radar, and fire control system, upgrading the secondary guns, antiaircraft guns, and bow sonar, increasing the lightning protection protrusion, and repairing the underwater shape......"
Li Ang asked: "I have seen the modification plan, and it says that after these modifications, its standard displacement will be increased to about 40,000 tons, is that true?"
"Yes, the increase in tons is mainly due to the widening of the mine protection salient hull is 5 meters wider than before, and the hull has also been trimmed. The other thing is that the armor is thickened. However, after such a modification, its combat effectiveness will improve by leaps and bounds, and the added weight is completely worth it. ”
"How long will it take for the renovation of the Houyi to be completed?"
"Mr. Li, the work of our shipyard will be completed in about 11 months, and the time for system testing will take about 3 months...... "Jin Longyu, general manager of Bochuan Shipyard, replied.
"Well......" Li Ang calculated in his heart, the transformation and testing of the shipyard, coupled with the running-in of the crew, the practice of new tactical tactics, the compilation of maintenance manuals, etc., until the formation of a complete combat effectiveness, it will take about one and a half years and less than two years, which is already quite fast in peacetime. If you put it abroad, it will take at least three years to make a major change like this, and the reason why China is so fast is because there is more advanced and more automated equipment.
"Hey, it's a pity that we haven't built a new battleship in the past few years, all of them have been built for other people's families......" Jin Longyu said with some regret.
"Yes......" Li Ang, the BB party, also sighed regretfully.
This is a resolution of the Central Committee, and Wen Desi has made it clear at the naval work conference that there will definitely be no large-scale construction tasks in the next few years, and Li Ang has no choice. However, although there is no major construction, there are still reconstruction tasks.
The Chinese Navy now has 24 super dreadnought-class battleships, including eight Fuxi-class (Fuxi, Nuwa, Houyi, Chiyou, Xuanyuan, Shennong, Dayu and Kuafu), four Sunwu-class (Sun Wu, Jiang Shang, Sun Bin and Wu Qi), four Li Jing-class (Li Jing, Tian Sui Tho, Wei Yi, and Huangshigong), four Yue Fei-class ships (Yue Fei, Qi Jiguang, Huo Quai, and Wei Qing), and two Qinling-class ships (Qinling and Taihang). There were also two trophy ships, one as a technical verification ship "Nuhao" (formerly the Italian Navy's "Andrea Doria", nicknamed "Ellie") and the other as a training ship "Zheng He" (formerly the "United Empire" of the Austro-Hungarian Navy).
Originally, there was still a Hanoi, but after the Japanese Revolution and joined the People's Revolutionary Union, China returned this long-outdated quasi-dreadnought to the Japanese People's Navy.
Among the 24 capital ships, the two Qinling-class were originally made out of the emergency weakened version because the dock was not enough, and the design itself had no margin, and there was very little room for transformation and upgrading, so it was not included in the transformation plan. Since the beginning of this year, the two Qinling-class ships have been transferred to the second line and served as training ships.
The first batch of battleships in the Fuxi class, the Fuxi and Nuwa, were 1. 0 version, it is also very troublesome to transform, and the most important thing is that they were attacked by Italian torpedo boats during the Mediterranean War, and were hit with multiple torpedoes, although they barely sank with good underwater defense, but their hulls were also seriously damaged, so after returning home for repair, they were also put on the second line. What's more, these two battleships were built in the United States, and the quality of the steel at that time was really not very good at that time, which made their natural foundation much weaker than the domestic sister ships of the same class later.
Therefore, these two battleships did not join the renovation plan, according to Wen Desi's idea, the Fuxi and Nuwa are the first batch of capital ships built in China, which are of great historical significance, and they are also meritorious ships, so they will not be dismantled after being decommissioned, but are ready to be converted into battleship museums. Wen Desi is going to put one in Qingdao and the other in Shanghai. The two Qinling-class ships were also converted into battleship museums, one in Guangzhou and the other in Fuzhou.
In addition to these four, the remaining twenty battleships were to be remodeled.
The two trophy ships, Ellie and Zheng He, are both second-tier warships, and Ellie is a technical verification ship, and it is its job to carry out magic transformation and verify various new technologies, not to mention. Zheng He is a training ship, and it will not be changed drastically.
The other eighteen battleships will be upgraded and upgraded, and their changes will be relatively large, the power system will definitely be changed, and the armor will also be improved. The first batch is the remaining six Fuxi-class, and their transformation is the largest, even the weapon system has to be changed.
It wasn't until after General Li Ang took office that he found that his director of the equipment bureau would be very busy in the past few years, although there was no large-scale construction of battleships, but there were still many magic transformation tasks of various ships and the construction of new ships.
The largest of these is called the General Merchant Marine Program. As the name suggests, it is a program that allows merchant ships to be easily converted into warships. It is not uncommon for merchant ships to be converted into warships, since ancient times, and during World War I, a large number of merchant ships were converted into warships by various countries. However, it was China that began to formalize it as a mandatory norm for a country.
The project began in the late stages of World War I and was so large that it involved almost all high-speed merchant ships. In 1916, China issued a new "Ship Standards Series", formulated a series of new standards, and established the "Ship Code Committee", which stipulated that the design and construction of all new merchant ships ordered by domestic users with a speed of more than 13 knots must pass the supervision and audit of the "Ship Code Committee". It includes the general transformation design of escort aircraft carriers for high-speed large merchant ships such as high-speed passenger ships, ro-ro ships, and container ships, the auxiliary cruiser transformation design for medium-sized merchant ships, and the general transformation design of auxiliary anti-submarine ships for small merchant ships such as high-speed fishing boats.
The first requirement of this plan for merchant ships is standardization and modularity, where individual subsystems can be easily replaced and disassembled, and designed with sufficient room for improvement. These ships are civilian ships in peacetime, no different from normal civilian ships, but once a war breaks out and they are needed to participate in the war, they can be transformed into warships with a simple transformation. However, not all kinds of merchant ships are suitable for transformation into warships, low-speed merchant ships with a speed of less than 13 knots are of little significance, and there are some special-purpose merchant ships such as refrigerated ships and liquefied natural gas carriers, and the hull structure is inherently unsuitable, so this category is not in this plan and is not restricted.
Of course, the performance of this civilian version of the warship is definitely not as good as that of the genuine warship, but it can't stand a large number. This is the naval version of the people's war!
........................................................................
To the west of the Bohai Shipyard site, in a remote corner away from the main site, there is a long building that stretches from the sea to the hill more than 200 meters away. The camouflage-painted building is about 40 meters high and 50 meters wide, with the seaside extending into the sea and the mountainside embedded in the mountain. The building is heavily guarded, with a warning zone of more than 300 meters, and the building is very strange, with only a few doors on the wall and a few rows of sparse air windows on the wall.
But if you walk in, you will find that this very large building is really just a shell, and there is nothing inside. Well, it's not really nothing, there's a lot of lights and ventilation fans in it, and there are escalators and platforms on the walls, and of course the main thing is in the middle of the ground. It is a 42-meter-wide waterway, a straight waterway about 300 meters long, with one end leading to the sea and the other to the interior of the mountain. There are two gates at both ends of the waterway, both of which are tightly closed at this time, especially the two steel gates embedded in the mountain, which are quite thick at first glance.
Yes, this building is just a façade, and its main purpose is to cover up the waterway leading to the mountain. So what's inside the mountain? It's nothing, it's just a small shipyard. According to its dock calculations, it can only build a maximum of 20,000 tons of ships, which is indeed not large in today's China.
The mountain is not big, only more than 200 meters high, covers an area of more than 10 square kilometers, and has no name. When the Bohai Shipyard was planned, it was zoned together with several other nearby hills, and it was renamed "Hulu Mountain". After that, China sent a large number of construction teams, and spent seven years to hollow out these hills in the Bochuan site, and built a lot of buildings in them, especially Hulu Mountain, its entire mountain belly was dug out of large and small hollows, the largest hole is 40 meters high, about 500 meters long, about 200 meters wide, with an area of 100,000 square meters, and there are 4 docks of all sizes in it.
Normal people know that building a shipyard in the belly of a mountain is undoubtedly a very, very time-consuming and laborious thing. As for why it took so much effort to hollow out the belly of the mountain and build this shipyard inside. The reason is very simple, because this is the final assembly plant for nuclear-powered submarines! This is the first and only final assembly plant for nuclear-powered submarines in China.
In fact, this humble place is the real center of gravity of the Bohai Shipyard, even though the area is less than a tenth of the Bohai Shipyard area.
At this time, the four docks were full, and each of them contained a drop-shaped submarine, which could be seen from the appearance that they were all of the same type, two of the two docks to the east were still building their hulls, and the two to the west looked about the same.
"Mr. Li, at present, the outfitting work of the two Type 912 No. 1 and No. 2 boats has entered the final stage and will be completed by the end of the month. Sea trials will begin next month...... Boat 3 and Boat 4 will be able to complete hull construction in July this year, and outfitting work will be completed around the end of next year......" Kim Yongyu said next to him.
"Well, what's going on with the Type 911 now?" Leon nodded. It's not the first time he's been here, originally a conventional submarine was built here. When he first came to inspect as director of the Equipment Bureau, the product here was the Type 908 "Walrus-class" ocean-going transport submarine, a large submarine with a water displacement of 15,000 tons, mainly responsible for the transportation of "humanitarian relief materials".
Jin Longyu replied proudly: "The situation of the Type 911 is very stable, and it has been running smoothly for four years now. Project ships 9000 and 9001 also operated smoothly for six years. ”
The Type 911 and Project 9000 engineering ships they are talking about are both experimental models, the Project 9000 and Project 9001 are the earliest nuclear power technology verification vessels, and the Type 911 is a nuclear-powered submarine of the experimental type, and it is also the first nuclear submarine in the world.
The two Type 912 submarines, which are about to be completed, are the first nuclear-powered submarines officially installed by the Chinese Navy. The Type 912 is known in the Navy as the "Beluga class", and they use the fourth generation reactor, the gas-cooled fast reactor, which is the most cost-effective fourth-generation reactor, which can achieve fuel value-added and has good inherent safety characteristics. Because it is a value-added reactor, its utilization rate of uranium fuel can reach more than 90%, which is about 200 times that of pressurized water reactors. After the Beluga class is built, if there is no accident, it can be used for life without changing the fuel.
Before they began construction, two experimental vessels using fourth-generation reactors disguised as merchant ships had been running at sea for almost four years, and two Type 911s had also been running around the world for almost two years, which had confirmed the safety and efficiency of fourth-generation reactors.
