Chapter 231: Wasteland
This is a dead world.
Fierce winds blew from the mounds in all directions, sweeping across the icy liquid of the lake, enveloping the two men walking on the surface as if to sweep them into the water.
It was silent, and the storm blowing from the ends of the world did not make the slightest sound, let alone the slightest sizzle from a living creature. It was as if Curt and Lizzie were the only ones left in this barren world, and the rest of the things had come to an end before they arrived.
Although he can't see the image of the foothold, Curt must "sonic bridge" is not much stronger than he imagined. As if walking in the void, Curt carried Lizzie on his back and stepped on the condensed entity of "sound", carefully crossing the cold lake.
Less than a cubit at his feet was the mirror-smooth lake, the cold gray of which was reflected in the crimson moonlight, making the liquid resemble some kind of solid metal. Regardless of the strong wind, they remained unmoved, clearly reflecting the appearance of the two people above them.
The bottomless water of the lake was silently shrouded in a cold gray light, and no trace of any creature was detected in the dead liquid. All the creatures that may have lived in the lake have been frozen into popsicles by the terrible cold and sunk to the bottom of the silt.
After crossing the "Sonic Bridge" for hundreds of meters, the two finally set foot on the first sandbar that served as a relay point. But when they got closer, the island was more of a sediment accumulation than a "sandbar", and a large amount of light green was condensed in the dark soft mud.
"These things look ...... Looks like the remains of some kind of creature, right?" he stepped on a slightly sturdier block of gravel. Curt looked around at the sediment that had accumulated in the mud, "Look at that, it looks a bit like a bird's bone. The spine and part of the back bone are still fairly intact. β
It's not just the wreckage that Curt pointed out, but the fragments of animal remains can be seen in many places in this sandbar. The bones of different creatures large and small mingled in every corner of the silt, and the cold waters of the lake covered their surfaces with a dull layer of hoarfrost.
Dead bodies can be unsettling, and may even affect people's mental state, but in this lifeless wasteland, it is not too surprising to see a dead body. Perhaps it can be said that it is precisely because their existence is taken for granted that people can feel relieved.
None of the skeletal remains of these animals are intact. Among them are some monsters that have never been seen before. They are mired in the asphalt-like mud, and they don't know how many years they've been there, but they may be the last of the people who once lived in this wasteland.
"It may be the remains of creatures from this world. β
Lizzie replied with a lack of interest, "Based on the number of dead bodies in the vicinity. There may have been a large number of biomes around the lakeside. To be able to pile up this amount, either there was a sudden change in the environment of the Heaven and Earth Mutation Cheng DΓΉ, or something had been slaughtered here. β
If there were living creatures, she might be able to psychoanalyze how the environment would affect the ecology of the species. However, look at it. All you can see is dead bodies...... They are not a dinner for high-class predators. It is a obsolete product that cannot adapt to changes in the environment.
As she was lazily dozing off on Curt's back, something caught her eye on the shore of the lake not far away. In the crimson moonlight, deep in the black silt, there was something reflecting the moon's light, and from the shape of it, it seemed to be an artifact.
Soon, with the power of her magic with a wave of her arm, she gently dug a slightly frosty sediment out of the mud near the lake. Under the influence of the magic, the ice wrapped around it cracked little by little, and the remains wrapped in the heavy shell revealed before the eyes of the two of them.
It was a human head.
Perhaps a species similar to "humans" looks like a skeletal model in a hospital with its head removed and buried under layers of silt to be eroded by time. The appearance of the past is long gone. Only the remnants of flesh and blood were sealed under the icy frost.
However, on the skull's head, which was about to decay, there was still a silver metal head ring. The long time has not left the slightest trace on its surface. The sleek metal structure shimmers with a cold glow as if it had just been cast.
It is not clear from experience that it is an ornament made of metal, and although it looks like an alloy of iron and silver, the actual touch is surprisingly light. The shape of the branches and leaves of the trees carved on the outside of the headband shows the skill of the craftsman at a glance with meticulous techniques.
A large turquoise gemstone carved into the shape of a shield sits into the forehead guard of the headband, and a little wire-like vine encloses it firmly in the groove. Through the clear green, you can feel some magic sleeping inside the gem, but unfortunately you can't feel the flowing vitality anymore.
"If it weren't for the fact that only our world has a creature like a 'human', then it is indeed possible that he 'was' a remnant of this world. At least I've never seen the metal used for the headband on his head, and it's kind of interesting. β
Lizzie's fingers brushed the pattern over the surface of the headband, then forcefully removed it from the skeleton's head. Although the headband was as new as before, the skull had long since decayed to the point that only a broken shell remained, and under Lizzie's tough actions, it collapsed inch by inch with a slight sound.
"But I can't be sure he's not a 'foreigner.' With a soft sigh, Lizzie threw the pieces in her hand into the lake, "Until more control samples are found, no matter how many similar things are found, it will only prove that someone has been here." β
Silently, the smooth stagnant water did not make a wave, not even a few drops, and what Lizzie had cast sank into the lake in an instant. From a distance, it looked like a black hole had unfolded in the center of the liquid that was as smooth as a horizontal mirror, swallowing the remains into its stomach in one gulp.
The headband made of unknown metal was wrapped in a rag and pocketed by Lizzie to be examined further once tools were found. The headband may be lighter than the rag in which it is wrapped, but it is as cold and sturdy as steel.
Maybe that's the biggest takeaway from coming here, but it doesn't help you in the current predicament. Lizzie ignored its existence and looked instead at the tower's crimson moonlight in the distance, casting a gloomy shadow from its dark body, like a giant looking down on them.
"I've rested enough, let's get ready for the next relay. β
With that, she once again activated the spell, and as a few highly compressed syllables spat out of her mouth, the sound waves that coalesced into the body rose into the air in an instant. Starting from the sandbar on which the two are standing, the colorless bridge crosses the calm air and connects to the isolated island in the lake farther away.
There is still about half a distance from the tower by the lake, and the two people standing on the "Sonic Bridge" can already see the view under the tower. It is a ruined city with many smaller towers dotted around it, in addition to the central black tower and the tall rock structures that surround it.
"This is simply the legendary capital of a thousand pillars......
Looking at the ruined city, Curt couldn't help but think of what he had seen in a certain book: "In the barren sea of gray sand stands the Thousand Rock Pillars, which are the residence of the kings occupied by the demon gods. Shadows dwell, the dead cry, and even the light of the sun cannot shine. β
The City of a Thousand Pillars, an ancient city mentioned in a narrative poem in the corner of the holy book of the Wickinas sect, where the proud king boasted of his wealth and army, eventually attracting the demons who destroyed him. They destroyed the entire kingdom and took the royal city for themselves, which was only in ruins.
Although it is only a story that exhorts the world to be humble and frugal, the description of the scene of "the city of a thousand pillars" in the narrative poem seems quite realistic. In the kingdom with the "tower" as the basic structure of the building, the higher the status, the higher the tower, the higher the tower, and finally the royal capital with thousands of towers was built.
"It is also a psalm of religious themes...... Do you really think those things might exist?" Lizzie muttered unhappily as Curt recited the familiar sentence, "Although I know that there are not many documents recorded about the buildings of ancient times, most of them are in the ancient books and paintings collected by those sects, but they are basically all things that sing praises to the 'gods' of their own sect. β
Most of the psalms in religious texts and ancient texts are vague, and most of the records describing civilization in mythological times belittle "self-righteous" magicians. The "ancient cities" that exist in the records were all destroyed because they did not respect the gods of their sect.
If they completely destroy miè just because they don't worship it, then what is the difference between such an act and the "demons" they slander? Lizzie has long since not believed that any god will be completely wiped out into ashes if that happens, and she is happy to accept this "divine punishment".
"Maybe so. β
Feeling the irony in Lizzie's words, Curt shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly: "Maybe the 'City of a Thousand Pillars' recorded by the Wigginas Sect is just a dream story made up by the people who wrote narrative poems, but this 'city' in front of me is a foreign relic no matter how it is said." β
Being able to witness the exotic scenery with his own eyes is undoubtedly a good thing for Curt to be on the same level as the relics of the modern mythological era. And the most important thing is that he didn't forget that the two of them were brought to this world by a pitch-black "sun" made by a Wigginya-style device.
Although he couldn't say for sure, he still felt that there was an inseparable relationship between the two. (To be continued......)
