Chapter 197: The Cathedral of Our Lady
Considering that laughing any longer might attract some unwanted attention, Kraft retracted his expression and walked with his two attendants to the place where the statues were standing.
The arches of the aperture and steps are stacked on top of each other, wrapping around the main entrance with a ring of wings on the frieze, each layer covered with carved decorations, behind which is a figure with an oval aperture and a kind face, and a child-like angel holding a musical instrument in a cloud or floral ornament.
Visitors are asked to climb the wide staircase, look up to the door, and enter the church under the watchful eye of the Knight in the Winged Helmet.
The movements of the two professors were somewhat uncoordinated, and as people who had not spoken a word of kindness to the church in the previous year, it was still somewhat disheartening to step into the most important earthly dwelling of the Heavenly Father in North.
The knights of the Church symbolize not only the dispensable meaning of security, but also the territory that legally belongs to the Father on earth, the theoretical kingdom within a kingdom.
Lyndon subconsciously lifted his neckline, put it under the tip of his nose and sniffed it, making sure that he was wearing regular clothes and did not smell at all, and then he crossed the dividing line between the gods and the world.
Natural daylight is replaced by a filtered and more brilliant lighting. With the copper frame and lead wire as the base, countless stained glass spliced picture windows divide the light, casting the chaotic landscape like Changhong shattering and swaying, forming the scene described in the scriptures on a huge scale that occupies the entire high wall.
It was the whole of the holy scriptures that was brought into view, and the saints and disciples were illuminated, filling the vision of those who came in the open and unobstructed high temple.
The load-bearing capacity of the walls is replaced by bundles of columns, which are bouquets of thin stone columns, the gravity of the grand vault flowing like water into the canal, and the attached columns are channeled to the columns with arcades. Clusters of ribs spread out from the top of the cluster column, and the branches of the trees spread out.
The ingenious mechanical design liberates the building, making it stable and magnificent, yet light and ethereal, leaving for an almost infinite magnificence that can be filled by something unimaginable, raising the space to a level that is sufficient to maintain a sublime and majestic silence on its own.
And at the far end of this space, a round of emblems in the rose window spreads its wingspan, and sits on the throne of the heavenly king carried by the slender willow-leaf window.
"Incredible." Kraft muttered. This is not a project that can be completed by simply stockpiling, but requires a considerable level of mathematical and construction skills, as well as a substantial and sustained financial investment, which can take hundreds of years to complete.
This shows that it began in the early days of the kingdom and beyond, when the decision-makers were equipped with the right skills and the extraordinary determination to bring it to life.
He imagined that if he belonged entirely to this age, it might not be an incomprehensible act to bow down before such a powerful and aesthetic creation, and to recognize it as a great work that existed outside of humanity.
"So no matter what, I still recommend it to first-time visitors to Dunlin." Linden lowered his voice a little helplessly, no matter how much he hated the church, the objective facts were undeniable.
"North University was the first place to establish a major in geometry, and it was also the first to form a specialized society, and the early support came from the archbishop of the time. They played a major role in perfecting part of the church's construction. β
"And most of the decoration here comes from church-backed painters and sculptors, who make up almost half of the art curriculum. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Tunlin University is a church university. β
"Indeed." Kraft admired the frescoes on the wall and walked along the side of the long hall, "In a way, most of the colleges in North owe it to the Church. Regardless of their initial intentions to build these academies, the results were good. β
The level of the ecclesiastical painter is really good, and the contents of the frescoes are connected together in chronological order, and the different scenes are divided by columns. The depiction of the guide awakening the chosen ones who are grazing the sheep, and the scattered sheep on the hillside turn in unison to follow the shepherd in the next scene, which is full of implications.
"I admit it, but it's a hindrance now." Lyndon looked around to make sure no one would hear his complaints, "I don't like to explain things in terms of the will of a 'Lord', which seems meaningless to accomplish any great deeds. β
The chosen one in the mural, surrounded by people in religious robes, draws a one-handed sword. He was probably referring to the idea that the first kings were instructed to draw their swords and establish kingdoms. This undoubtedly reinforces the sanctity of royal rule, but the disadvantage is that the name of the Father can be above the worldly to interfere with the academy in the hands of the duke.
The "fateful" sword appears repeatedly in the following paintings, and the painter realistically shows the action of slashing with one hand, but the effect is that it is like slicing through the enemy's armor and the long neck of the wing-covered behemoth.
It can only be said that people really can't imagine things they haven't seen, and the actions that were originally portrayed quite real become like fighting tofu in this overly violent expression, especially the incision is ridiculously smooth, resulting in no texture.
"They even feel like they only have one bone in their forearm." Lyndon dismissively pointed out the mistakes in the war picture, where the cross-section of a person whose arm was cut off in battle was no different from a cross-cut chicken leg, "It is impossible to depict a person correctly in the true sense of the word until the anatomy of the human body is known." β
"Forget it, Professor Linden, it's still in the church." Seeing that the other party had a tendency to unconsciously treat this as an anatomy lesson, Kraft quickly stopped Lyndon and pulled him inside.
They quickly walked through a series of frescoes, and then rounded the corner into the horizontal section of the cruciform hall.
The light is noticeably dimmed by the longer axis sections, and a large number of trivial solid decorations replace the stained glass windows that occupy the walls, and the dim lighting returns to the feeling of ordinary stone building interiors, with only the dusty light cast by the high windows.
The materials built into the frame are rough looking like raw materials that are not stone or wood, and they are not polished, and the simplicity has a strong contrast with the previous magnificence.
They are distinguished by differences in shape and size in the cabinet-like partitions, and are as simple as a child's patchwork of pebbles, with a grayish, white and stale color. The larger ones are hollowed out, concentrated as the main body of the figure, and pose for an approximate wing ring pattern.
Puzzled, Kraft approached and came to a high wall of gray and white scraps that rose from the ground to the dome, and identified the material.
γBonesγ
"This is.?" Instinctively, he took a half-step back and looked behind him. Koop reflexively touched his empty waist, his lips twitched, and he didn't know how to describe this scene of shock and solemnity, which did not need to be carefully arranged, even if the heart was shaken by the material itself.
Yvonne pressed the hem of her skirt and saw Kraft turn his head and relax as if he didn't care.
"The Legacy of Plague and War."
Although he had been here more than once, Lyndon's tone was still a little embarrassed, "The top layer is from more than ten years ago. β
Only then did Kraft notice that there was a slight layering of the discoloration of these bones, from different ages, and the lowest part of the skull that formed the lower arc of the ring had been brittle and cracked, and the upper layer had also penetrated into the pigmentation.
"Of course, there are many more plagues, and there are few wars that do not have plagues. The ones on the second and third floors are probably from fifty or sixty years ago. "After that time, the Faculty of Medicine at Dunlin University expanded considerably, and the academic achievements of the same period were very fruitful. β
"There are a lot of people here who receive and receive prayers, but there may not be anything underground. It is hard for those who have not experienced it to imagine, and will not understand, why some people are close to being paranoid or radical in academics. β
He spoke quickly, as if to explain something, or refer to someone, and Kraft wasn't sure if it included what he knew.
The men did not linger long in front of the uncomfortable walls and continued deeper into the church. Fortunately, Rivers University's Oak Leaf Chapter has no colleges, so they have managed to fool the door by omitting their professorship without a major, and they can enter an area that is generally closed to the public.
As for browsing after blending in, it was easier, and with a little money and a promise not to move, the bell-ringer simply let the door open, telling them not to stay on it for too long.
Walking on the same stairs that Edward and his predecessors had climbed decades earlier, readers of the manuscript have subtly ascended this bell tower with special significance.
The rooms at the top of the building are long unoccupied, the furnishings are empty, and the wide Tem River flows under the bell tower, with a panoramic view of the small half of the city, and the white stone vaults of the medical school stand in the distance on the other side of the building.
Opposite the main entrance of Notre-Dame Cathedral, a natural island in the middle of the river splits the water on both sides, revealing smaller church-like buildings and knightly sculptures in front of it.
"It's the Knight's Island Church over there, and the last time it was opened was a royal wedding, so you can only see it from a distance." Lyndon dutifully took on the role of today's tour guide, "The sculpture in front is said to be made in the real appearance of the first Norse King. β
It's not too far, but the statue isn't big, and it's hard to tell the action, let alone catch a glimpse of the legend. One could only vaguely see that the crowned king was holding the reins in one hand, and the other hand was held high as if to summon his followers, and as if grasping something.
Yvonne leaned over the window and looked at it for a while, but quickly gave up because he couldn't see clearly.
"Would you like to take a closer look?" Kraft asked. If she is curious, time permitting can rent a small boat and get close to the island for sightseeing.
The girl shook her head, indicating that she was not very interested in the portrait of a dead man, essentially no different from the one embedded in the wall below.
"Speaking of which, Dunling is quite big, and cleaner than I thought." The river breeze on the bell tower was pleasant, and there was no uncomfortable smell of most cities due to poor dredging, and Kraft pulled out the topic without words.
Predictably, if there is no progress on the academy's side, this will be the normal state of their lives next.
"Maybe it's because the sewers are wide? I heard that this system was built earlier than the current Dunling City, and it is a big project, or it is not a complete sewer, and it also includes an underground cemetery that has nowhere to be accommodated, are you interested in taking a look? β
"No, no, no." Kraft quickly refused, he had no fear of bones, but that didn't mean he liked to go sightseeing in the pile of bones, "Isn't there anything else to do?"
"Uh" Lyndon pondered, Tunling still had some places to visit, but none of them were amazing after experiencing the Cathedral of Our Lady, and it would be too unethical to continue walking.
Turning over and over again, a thought that had been forgotten before came to mind.
"How about we go and visit Morrison's family?"
"He still has family?"
I recommend a recently seen Warhammer fandom, the protagonist is the female version of Angelon (laughs). Finally someone wrote this brain hole.
