Chapter 24: The Underground Market
At noon, Dunn was called to church by the bishop, and he even took Esther, Frye, and Loyo to the police to participate in the investigation, and Siga went to Raphael's cemetery on the outskirts of the North End to make a round, and Leonard was on duty at Chanis Gate.
Crane, who stayed in the company for "office food", was very idle, and Esther went down to eat with Leonard with lunch, and only Blake, Roshan and Crane remained in the reception hall at this time.
The tall, thin man who knocked on the door had a capable posture, and after a quick look around, he learned in a simple conversation that the "mercenary team" was not there anyone at the moment, so he had to leave the place in disappointment.
Not long after, the man turned back again, he was talking to a few people and decided to wait for a while, just as Crane saw that the rain was getting lighter and wanted to leave, Leonard came up and invited Crane to complete the task of finding the person together.
Esther soaked in old Neil's literature this afternoon, but old Neil was very determined, and did not really give her any books that explained the second and third periods in depth, but took out some dispensable legends, and Esther could only sigh secretly, trying to analyze what she wanted to explore from above-the true origin of the goddess of the night.
She didn't dare to say her purpose, after all, this was the base of the Night Watch under the influence of the Night Church.
The next morning, Crane was guided by a dream and discovered the whereabouts of the notebook, so he took Dunn and the others to the place where they had rescued the hostages yesterday, and since Esther had not yet gotten up, Dunn did not want to disturb her, so he took Leonard, Neal Sr., and Frye with him.
Esther did wake up late today, and when she got up in a daze, it was almost ten o'clock, and for some reason, she had been sleeping longer and longer lately, which made her vaguely uneasy, worried that she would sleep like this.
Isn't that really a seal?
She finished changing her clothes, put the little bug in her pocket as usual, and decided to see what the weather was like today before deciding whether she wanted to go outside or not. The braided pendant for Klein had been completed, and she used a silver ring as a bayonet, adding a tuft of tassels underneath her best-knit piece to date, a rather unique decoration.
But knowing where this style of hanging ornament comes from, I'm afraid it's her and Klein in the world.
Maybe the night knows. Esther sighed.
In the living room, Old Neil was sharing with Klein about the underground market, and they all greeted Esther when he walked in. Esther handed the tassel knot to Klein, who was pleasantly surprised, he didn't expect that he would receive this special handmade gift after only such a short period of time.
"Thank you! You've got a lot of skill. This thing has taken you a lot of time, hasn't it? β
Esther also sat on the sofa and stretched leisurely: "You can hurry up if you are familiar with your hands, anyway, I have a lot of free time, and I will make it up after more practice." β
"Thank you, it looks really special."
"Hey, you're the best I've ever done. I've got to make sure everybody has it, it's going to keep everybody! β
Old Neil smiled and said nothing, and sat quietly beside him to watch the two young men communicate. Klein couldn't let go of this peace knot, but in front of old Neil, the two fellows couldn't speak "hometown dialect", and could only make eye contact with each other.
In the end, Esther changed the subject: "You just talked about the extraordinary material market? There shouldn't be many such places in Tingen. β
Old Neil looked at Esther: "It's not much, but Tingen said that it's not small, and there is still underground trade." You don't seem to have been there either? β
"Can I go along? I'm curious, too! I'm not going to get in trouble, I'm just going to look around. β
Old Neil burst out laughing: "Hahaha, what trouble can you get into!" Don't be stupid, of course you can come with us. β
"Esther never been?" Klein was a little surprised, he thought that Esther was already familiar with this area, after all, she had been a member of the Night Watch for a while.
Esther shook her head, "I haven't had much contact with extraordinary people from the outside world, but I'm actually quite curious. β
Old Neil glanced at Esther disapprovingly: "There's nothing to be curious about, it's all like that." Don't be too enthusiastic, or the captain will definitely say me if he knows that I take you around. β
"Okay, secrecy! Then you talk, I'll go see Siga, and I've heard that her new story is ready again. Esther grinned and walked away.
Old Neil had always marveled at Esther's ability to read people's faces, and always wondered why Leonard couldn't learn this. Now that Esther was gone, Old Neil and Klein continued to talk.
After talking about teaching ritual magic tomorrow, Crane asked tentatively, "Esther, does she rarely come into contact with extraordinary materials?" I don't think she's been here for a long time. β
"She...... For some reason, Dunn imposed quite a bit of restraint on Esther's affairs, even forbidding me to teach her too much of the practical aspects of the occult. β
"Captain Dunn?" Klein was stunned for a moment, and in disguise confirmed his previous vague speculation that the church seemed to be imprisoning Esther, intentionally or unintentionally.
"Yes, Esther's abilities are not stable, and you should know that she lives in Chanismen, which is not a normal place to live...... That's what she can do. Dunn did this for her own good, too. β
Old Neil suddenly remembered something: "By the way, don't look at Esther with psychic vision, her state is quite strange, and she can't be used as a reference." β
Klein nodded his head in a good manner, and what he thought in his heart was unknown.
ββ
On Monday, Crane, who had already learned ritual magic, stayed at home, and after revising the pointing spell, he decided to conduct an experiment with the "hanging man" and "justice" praying to him.
After the tarot meeting, Klein looked up at the symbol on the back of his chair, and looked at a slightly lowered gray mist on the top of the round table. Because the bulge is only the size of a bowling ball, it is difficult to notice it from below, but Crane always has an inexplicable sense of it, as if there is some kind of medium that coordinates him with the gray fog sleeping inside.
Crane had a hunch that as long as he could advance to Sequence Eight, the things above would be revealed.
Speaking of which, his spiritual power is enough to pull another person up, do you want Esther to join the Tarot Society as well? Could she have thought she had a belief in an evil god? But the exchange of information here may be of some help to her.
This move is too risky, Klein will not make a hasty decision, and this fellow has a lot of secrets, Gray Mist is his biggest hole card, or don't expose it to the people in his life first. And Klein wasn't quite sure how to pull others up to the gray fog, so let's wait until the ritual experiment was successful.
Otherwise, you have to pretend to be a god in front of your fellow countrymen, and you will be embarrassed to death just thinking about it.
Work hard to become stronger first, so as to better control this gray fog.
Two days later, Old Neil called out to Esther as promised, and took Crane to the Dragon Bar with him.
Hearing the waves of shouts inside, Esther couldn't help but shrink her shoulders, perhaps because of the memory of the day she landed, she hated places like bars and the like, and she had never been to them when she was shopping in Tingen.
However, with her physical age and beautiful appearance, if she walked into the bar alone, it would only attract all kinds of malicious eyes.
Klein noticed that there was a person with a high-pressure steam rifle in the hidden place on the roof, which alerted the old Neil, and immediately found someone he knew to inquire about the situation, and learned that it was the newly wanted "Tris" who came to buy materials, but he was recognized, and now the person has run away, and the official extraordinary person who arrived rushed to the air.
After hearing the reply that the trading market had "just resumed", Old Neil walked briskly into the door of the bar with two young men.
The sultry heat and the smell of alcohol made Esther's facial features twisted together, and Crane's patience was a little better than hers, but he still frowned subconsciously.
A boxing match is being held at the "Dragon Bar", and the two men on the stage are naked, and dozens of drinkers are shouting and cheering, so loud that Esther can't hear what they are saying.
Old Neil was very indifferent, he led the two around the boxing ring and walked to a billiard room at the back, where the people were originally chatting, and immediately shut up when they saw someone coming in. After confirming their identities, the two men moved out of the way, and Esther and Klein followed Old Neil through the secret door.
After passing through several rooms, the three of them walked into a rather large room, wider than an indoor basketball court, with an atmosphere much like the vegetable market or night market that Esther remembered, and of course, there were no snacks for sale.
The vendors here are all selling spiritual materials or extraordinary products, and each seller displays a variety of small things, both useful and useless, and it is not easy for the customers to distinguish between the useful and the useless. The security party who rents out the venue will not deal with such a small matter as being cheated on money, and they are only responsible for collecting a cut of one-twentieth of the revenue.
The first to look to the left was Crane, and Esther only looked over after noticing his sudden turn.
It was a young man in a linen shirt, his pale face was glazed, his eyes were unfocused, he was so crazy that he didn't know what to say. After their eyes met Klein's, the young man with messy hair walked over, his feet fluttering as if he were sleepwalking, making one wonder if he would fall to the ground at any moment.
He stopped in front of several people, looked at Klein in a daze, and suddenly laughed out loud: "Haha! The smell of death, the smell of deathβah! β
At the scream, the young man closed his eyes, and two lines of blood flowed from the corners of his eyes.
The young man covered his eyes and rolled on the ground screaming, and no one on either side of the patron and vendor even looked at him, until he stopped a little, curled up on the ground with tears in his eyes, and then Esther pulled out his handkerchief and stepped forward, half-kneeling on the ground to carefully wipe the blood from the young man's face.
Old Neil shook his head and explained that this orphan named Ademisore was also called a "monster", because he was born with too high inspiration and often felt the things that others were unconscious, so he became crazy, and often got hurt because he saw things he shouldn't see and heard things he shouldn't hear.
When Klein asked why the official Extraordinaire team didn't accept him, Old Neil explained that none of them had a recipe for the Ademisor sequence, because the official Extraordinaire sequence information was involved, and the conversation only took place between two people, and they deliberately kept their voices down.
Esther didn't hear it, but she couldn't do anything about it, she herself was still one, she didn't even know the potion formula, and she was still confused about the situation of her sequence.
Ademisor was soothed by Esther's soft whisper, and he clung to her cuffs, muttering something that was inaudible in the slightly noisy surroundings.
"Mr. Neil, do you have any healing potions there?"
Old Neil shook his head: "I didn't bring it out." You can leave him alone, and he will get better on his own. β
"It's okay, you guys go shopping first, it's rare for Klein to come once. I'm not going to buy anything anyway, I'm here to spend a while with him, if you come across a healing potion, can you buy some for me? I brought some money. β
Old Neil took the two gold pound bills that Esther took out and patted Esther on the head: "Silly boy...... Then you go shopping first, Klein, I'll go over there and pay the bill, and then I'll help Esther take a look. β
Klein wasn't too comfortable leaving Esther alone: "Is it okay for you to be alone?" β
"It's okay, there are so many people around, how to say it's also a trading market with official care, safe and secure."
"Okay, then you stay safe, I'll come back to you later."
Esther smiled brightly at Klein: "I can't distinguish those materials, and I want you to help me see what's interesting, remember to tell me." β
Klein planned to take this opportunity to get to know the market well, so he didn't insist on staying: "Then you will shout for help when something happens." β
"It's all right," Esther patted Ademisore on the head, "just a poor child." β
Well, the fellow has a bit of a kind mother's heart attack. Klein sighed, everyone else is much taller than you, but he doesn't look like a child. After divining "Esther will be in danger if she stays here" with a pendulum, and getting a small counterclockwise answer, Klein is relieved to go to the market.
After Old Neil and Crane went their separate ways, Esther led Ademisor, who had risen again, to the base of the wall and sat down. She basically wears a shirt and trousers when she goes out now, so it doesn't matter if she is cross-legged, if it weren't for the fact that the seal can't be called casually, Esther really wants to find something that can change her appearance, so that someone will always look at her twice.
For some reason, Ademisor kept holding on to Esther and refused to let go, so she could only let him hold on to the corner of his left coat and quietly observe the people coming and going in the market.
The corner was secluded, and after Ademisor's blood and tears had subsided, he struggled to hold up his eyelids and look at Esther, this time with more clear tears, and Esther could now hear what he had been muttering.
"Boundless light...... Gentle ...... Soothing light ...... It's light ......."
