Chapter Seventy-Four: Warmth and Friendship Should Be Commonplace

Esther still woke up early the next day, her biological clock was stable in Tingen, and now she could guess the approximate time even without her close-fitting pocket watch, which was not yet seven o'clock.

She stretched, and when she got up from the bed, she saw the larks squatting in the window again. They seemed to recognize her, and as soon as they saw her standing on the ground, they let out a pleasant chirp.

Esther smiled knowingly, pulled out the remaining sandwiches from the previous night, opened the whole window, broke some bread crumbs and sprinkled them on the edge of the window, and the birds wagged their tails as she watched, and jumped happily to pick up the food.

Esther yawned and went to the bathroom to wash up.

A dark shadow flew down from the roof next door, and with its size larger than the larks, it flew directly with its wings to fly two small larks. Amid the angry insults of several larks, the crow swallowed a few mouthfuls of the largest bread chunks with scrambled eggs, then kicked the window edge and flew back to the north of Beckland.

When Esther returned, a few larks were still chirping and waving their wings, and she blankly pulled out her sandwich again, broke some more bread crumbs to soothe the birds, and stuffed the rest into her mouth.

Why do they look so angry?

It was just a brief morning episode that didn't affect Esther's life, and there was still a lot of time left before she went to work at Cafe Ethereal, and when she saw Mrs. Romano walking downstairs with a pot of fertilizer, Esther asked if she needed a helper.

"So free? If you haven't found a job, don't be like Calwin's bastard boy who is idle every day. Mrs. Romano said this, but unceremoniously shoved the fertilizer she was holding into Esther's hand.

"It's going to take a while for my job to get there, and it's the Sounds Cafe on the corner of the street, and they don't have many customers in the morning."

"Oh? It's strange that Martha's picky person would be willing to hire a new employee. โ€

Mrs. Romano walked out with Esther and instructed her to water the square parterre with a watering can, and to sprinkle enough water on the leaves as she watered the surface soil, as the air pollution in Bakeland caused frequent ash on the leaves of the plants.

"It's okay, I can see you're a meticulous guy, much better than Richie. He broke three of my flower pots before, can you imagine? Three of them! I never let him get close to my children again. โ€

Not long after, Norn also walked out of the apartment, carrying his old and huge backpack, and greeted the two: "Good morning, Mrs. Romano, Luna. โ€

"Good morning, Norn."

Norn walked up to Esther and looked at the upright sunflower, "What do you say?" Sunflowers are indeed a good fit for you. โ€

"Really? I wonder what Norn's favorite flower is? โ€

Norn smiled and pointed to the low pot of red geraniums next to the sunflowers: "When I was young, it was the most hanging in front of my house, and I, my mother, once told me, its flower language was 'Happiness is by your side'. Before their accident, I had a flower shop in my house. โ€

Esther's watering of the flowers in her hands stopped, and her face was sad: "I'm sorry......"

"No, no, it's me who has too many mouths, I have to leave quickly." Norn waved his hand and said goodbye to the two of them, "It's more crowded on the subway later." โ€

"See you later. Hope you have a great day! โ€

Norn smiled bitterly, "As long as the kids don't ask too many weird questions." โ€

It wasn't until Norn was out of sight that Mrs. Romano cleared her throat: "Ahem, I didn't know Norn still had such a flamboyant tongue. โ€

"Flim Flam? Didn't you? Esther continued to water the flowers in a daze.

"Young people, don't underestimate the observation of the elderly! Norn isn't a bad boy, but I wouldn't recommend getting too close to him. โ€

Esther's movements froze, and she recalled the crazy look she saw through the crack in the door that day: "I know, but it is better to have a harmonious relationship between neighbors than to fight every day." โ€

Even if it's just a false rapprochement.

As Esther stood by the flowerbed and listened to Mrs. Romano's science about her "children's" regular flowering, a man wrapped in a coffee-colored trench coat walked out, glanced at them coldly, and hurried away without saying a word. The eagle-like eyes under the man's mask made Esther frown, it seemed that this was the legendary gentleman who lived in Five Zero-One.

It's really fierce.

A few minutes later, Agnes and Josephine also came out, Agnes changed into warm orange lipstick and bright gold eyeshadow today, and the whole person looked radiant. Dozens of minutes after the two girls who were heading to the Bakerland University campus left, Richie also ran out of the house in a panic.

"Damn, I almost forgot I had morning class today! Goodbye two ladies! โ€

Richie didn't even wait for Mrs. Romano and Esther to respond, and rushed straight to the street corner to the subway station.

Esther ticked the time, said goodbye to Mrs. Romano, and headed to the Cafe of Nature.

A few minutes later, Calvin stretched out of the apartment door, and as he passed by Mrs. Romano, he was suddenly stopped by her: "Calwin, what are you looking at?" โ€

Calwin's expression was blocked behind his sunglasses, and he stopped to stand next to the sunflower: "Of course I'm looking at the flowers." Flowers are also an art crafted by nature, and since there is a beauty worthy of my appreciation, I will naturally linger for it. โ€

"You've been watching the window for so long, why don't you come down and look at it?"

Calvin was silent for a few seconds, then shook his head, "It's too close to see clearly, ma'am." But why is this sunflower so tall? Looks out of place. โ€

Mrs. Romano sat on the edge of the flower bed, turning the emblem of life of Mother Earth in her hand, and laughed: "Flowers are flowers, and they don't need to blend into anything." โ€

"I see, teachable."

Calvin didn't say goodbye, just walked out of the apartment and walked in the direction of the subway station.

Mrs. Romano looked at Calwin's back and reached out to beat her waist and arms: "Alas, people can't accept old age, but fortunately there is little Luna." If I had known that this apartment would welcome so many young people with different talents, I should have understood that this was a bad errand......"

The calm and ordinary life of Lily of the Valley Street continues.

While Sherlock Moriarty gradually established himself as a "private detective" at 15 Minsk Street and was frequently in distress, Luna Duboa, the "pianist" at 29 Lily of the Valley Street, also came into the curious eyes of the residents here.

Esther was happy to have two weeks of peace, and she preferred the daily routine of Lily of the Valley Street to be close to ordinary people rather than night watchers worrying about their lives all the time.

However, there are also people who enjoy group activities, such as Richie.

"An open-air concert?"

After Esther repeated the word, Candela's expression on the chair next to her suddenly became gloomy: "It's not so exaggerated, it's just a casual play and entertainment." However, the last 'concert' was disastrous. โ€

Richie slapped the table with a slap, then rubbed his aching palm on his trouser leg: "This time it will definitely be different!" You don't know, Norn wrote a score, and it's really nice to listen to him hum! We can play this way! โ€

"But I don't know what instrument I can play, and the piano is probably inconvenient."

Candela shrugged: "You can shake my shaker, I'll be happy to." Agnes could play the harmonica, Josephine had a triangle, and Richie could play the accordion. โ€

Richie slapped himself the thigh this time: "That's right! Let Norn be the conductor! โ€

Candela held up a hand, "Stop! First of all, Norn can't command, and secondly, none of us can understand the gestures of commanding, can you go out of your head? โ€

"So Gal doesn't participate?" Esther asked.

The corners of Candela's mouth twitched: "Letting him participate is the biggest disaster last time." โ€

Richie's laughter was much more rampant, and he kept laughing "quack" for a long time before stopping: "It's funny to say that Garr, who is full of 'love of art,' is a music idiot. He brought a violin with him, and even the pigeons in the square ran away in fright. โ€

Esther laughed along: "How can this be! Seeing that he often came to the cafรฉ to listen to me play the piano, I thought he was a music fanatic. โ€

"He's a prodigal playboy, everybody here knows it." Candela said disdainfully.

"Alright, don't speak ill of our Mr. Sunglasses behind your back, he'll be sad to hear it."

Candela put his hand on his forehead and said helplessly: "You should know that his 'sadness' is all exaggerated acting skills, right?" โ€

Richie scratched his hair embarrassedly: "Really? But he did look very sad. โ€

Candela looked at Esther, "Luna, you can come and have a look, I don't think you're going to make trouble with you in Gal." But don't take what that guy says, as far as Richie knows, Gal doesn't have any girlfriends for more than two weeks. โ€

Esther nodded vigorously: "I understand, I'll be careful." โ€

Candela then pointed at Richie: "As long as you're not such a fool, there's nothing to worry about." โ€

Richie blushed in embarrassment, but still smiled, completely unaware of being called "fool".

"It's already Sunday afternoon, it's only Tuesday, and we still have time to practice." Richie suddenly rummaged through his briefcase, and pulled out three sheets of music written by a novice, which he used to hand out to the participating members, "This is the one that Norn wrote, and I'll be in charge of the main theme and let Agnes's harmonica accompany it." You can read it, right? โ€

"No problem."

During this time, Esther also bought some music books at a nearby bookstore and played a lot of popular local melodies, which won unanimous praise from customers. With the analytical skills of a "decryption scholar", she quickly mastered the slightly different staves in this world, and learning new music was a piece of cake.

Esther took the paper from Richie's hand and just looked at it, the expression on her face gradually empty.

Richie seemed to like the tune, and he hummed a short section before looking at Candela with interest, "How's it going?" Pretty good, right? โ€

"Wouldn't it be too sad to go to Fountain Square and play a tune like this?"

Richie shook his head vigorously: "How is it possible! As long as we play well enough, the melancholy of the tune is nothing! And it's rare that Norn wrote such a tune, and I'd love to try it. โ€

Candela sighed, "Alas, whatever you want. Luna, don't you still have to go to work on Sundays? โ€

After a moment of silence, Esther squeezed the score, making Richie nervous and eager to snatch the paper back, until Esther showed a very shallow smile: "I'll take a leave of absence, of course I'm going to the square to attend your concert." I'll ask Martha to take a break for me and go back to the store to work overtime when the concert is over. โ€

"That's great! You must come and cheer! Richie said with a grin.

Esther returned the score to Rich: "Does Norn have a name for this piece?" โ€

"No, he hasn't thought about it."

"I have a good suggestion," Esther got up from her chair, she needed to go back to her room to calm down, "can you tell him for me?" 'Birch Forest'. โ€

Because that's what it was called.

* It's the Russian version of Bai Hualin's "ะ‘ะตั€ั‘ะทั‹", not Pu Shu's version, although that version is also very good, but his original, not a Russian cover.
