Chapter 9: Meeting
It was only after the "World" was confirmed that the "Fool" waved his hand and sent Esther down into the gray mist.
The soft and intimate light curtain fades.
Esther opened her eyes again, the dark wooden floor, with the old scratches of the chair being dragged on, the bed covered with blue sheets, and the dark gray curtains letting in the undazzling sunlight.
The room wasn't spacious, and the dΓ©cor was extraordinarily simple to save money, but it made Esther feel at ease.
Everything was ordinary, so plain that she was moved to tears, and her vision returned, and she could already get rid of that weird and chaotic perception, and only need to look at the world with her eyes.
"It's really good......"
Esther found her voice hoarse like frostpaper, and she couldn't help but touch her throat and chuckle.
She stood up from the wooden chair, one leg of the chair scraping against the ground with a screeching noise.
Even this sound made Esther feel happy, and she pressed her hand to her heart, but the simple repetition of the beating of her heart made her feel so long.
Esther walked to the window, pulled back the curtains, and pushed the closed window open.
The voices of the people, the wind, the roar of steamships in the distance, all the sounds and colors of the world poured into her eyes and ears.
In the distance, the blue and endless sea line, the sky slightly overcast by the floating clouds, the sailors who shouted at their colleagues to the tavern, rushed to the pedestrians who constantly displayed their wares.
Everything was mixed together, still a little chaotic, but clear and full of life, just looking at it gave Esther the peace of mind to come back to reality.
She smiled with red eyes and took a deep breath, the salty smell of the sea breeze gently brushing her chest, making Esther's eyes red.
"That's nice......"
She touched the ends of her forehead, which had completely regained her pale blonde, and whispered in a hoarse voice.
ββ
Esther's first thing to do was to go to the market to buy new suitcases and a change of clothes, as well as a few candles and pen and paper, in order to pray to the "fool" as soon as possible.
Thankfully, Ace had counted the balance in her pocket, and there were about thirty gold pounds left, and she was used to carrying most of her cash with her, so that she could not buy anything.
Esther held up a glass of mint honey water and enjoyed it slowly, and she looked no different from other travelers as she carried her black suitcase. Esther even bought a jar of mint cream on the recommendation of a roadside vendor, which she heard was a popular sweet in Pletzer Harbor.
After using fish stew and marinated meat sandwiches in a restaurant, Esther felt completely revived.
I feel so happy to be able to eat......
Esther took another bite of the sandwich, and her overly touched expression made several of the guests who were looking at her subconsciously turn their heads, wondering if the young lady was not in a good mind.
After Esther returned to the inn satisfied, she did not begin to arrange the ritual of praying to the "fool" for a blessing until she had finished bathing in new clothes, which was quite like a ritual of burning incense and bathing.
However, instead of praying directly, she prayed first, asking Mr. Fool when he would be able to perform the ceremony.
On the other side, in a restaurant in Port Prieze, Klein, who was eating grilled fish pie, heard the sound of prayer, quickly borrowed a bathroom from the shopkeeper, skillfully arranged the spiritual wall in four steps, and then sent a "right now" response to the ball of light that swung out of prayer.
Esther moved very quickly, because she had already prepared something, and this time when she prayed for a gift, it was far less intense than the last time she sacrificed the human skin shadow, but Esther still hung her head, not daring to peek at the other side of the door.
Soon, as the spiritual rift closed, Esther breathed a sigh of relief, and then looked at the extra thing on the table:
It is a clawed knife modeled after Esther's illustration, small and portable, with a total length about the palm of an adult man's hand.
The grip is separated from the blade, and the fang-like blade is curved and curled throughout, showing a dark red color, and there are blood grooves like paw prints on it. The end of the grip has a ring that allows your fingers to pass through and grip the handle with thick short hairs and the same curve.
But as Esther rubbed the short hair, it quickly shed a layer of hair, revealing its true dark appearance.
So Esther grabbed it and rubbed it several times before trying to use it, rubbing all the strange "negative effects" bald, and then she tried the feel of the claw knife.
As she expected, this small, delicate agile weapon that requires finger and wrist strength to work together is simply tailor-made for the "thief".
Esther made this claw knife fly up and down between her fingers, dancing it like a butterfly through a light blade, the best thing about this claw knife is that it is easy to hide, Esther can directly wrap it around the waistband of his pants with two bandages, and tie it to the inside and outside of his arm or in his high boots without any problems.
"You're not going to poison people, are you?"
Esther spun the knife around and around, considering what to name it.
Of course, this magical object has no "living" characteristics, and is simply suppressed by the hidden "Zoya" in Esther's body, and it is quietly played with by Esther, from beginning to end until it does not emit any toxins.
Esther gestured at the shape of the clawblade, and with a little force, the tip of the claw knife protruded a little more, bringing it closer to the shape of a short scimitar.
What's it called? Iron broken teeth? This claw knife is too small in size, it doesn't have that kind of momentum at all, and it's too far behind. But that extraordinary trait seems to be called a "werewolf"?
Esther thought outside the box and quickly settled on its name - "Logan's Claws".
ββ
On the 4th of January, Esther paid an extra day's rent at the hotel, preparing to wait until she met with Klein today to consider the rest of the trip.
In the morning, she once again scoured the neighborhood for a few open vendors, and tasted a fairly fresh clam and mussel soup and grilled mackerel fillet, served with crispy croissants and mint sweet tea, and then asked the stall owner for directions to the "Port Pritz Ticket Company", and went to wait to meet her fellow countryman with satisfaction.
According to Mr. World, he was able to relay the matter directly to Klein, and I don't know how they got in touch, maybe a messenger or something?
Esther walked briskly and had a bright smile on her face, and if it weren't for the fear of causing a disturbance, she would have wanted to hum a little song halfway through.
Her new clothes were as simple as ever:
A dark blue slim-fitting waistcoat with wavy patterns, a long-sleeved white shirt, and black tweed trousers, the cuffs of which were rolled into the inside of the boots for ease of movement. The hooded black cape just above the knees did not grow enough to cover the whole body, not to drag on the ground, but to hang down on the calves like a skirt.
At this time, Esther did not put on her hood, showed her hair and full face, and walked generously down the street, so that she would not look so suspicious.
But compared to the rest of the people, she was dressed more casually, not like a passenger going to sea, not like a perennial wanderer on the sea begging for a living, but like a ranger out of some kind of theatrical story, out of place in Port Prieze.
Esther also carried a small small box in her hand, which was also filled with light clothes, and the important things were still in her carry-on bag, including the deformed sandhammer, which was also cleaned by Esther.
She didn't take the carriage, because the area where she lived was not too far from the White Rose District, and after a few dozen minutes of walking, she also found the "Pritz Port Ticket Company", but it was different from the spacious ticket hall that Esther had imagined, only an old three-story building, and the wooden plaques gave off a faint musty smell, as if they had been soaked in the sea.
After entering the door, the hall was very spacious, there were seven ticket windows, and there were many people in line at this time, Esther glanced at the hall twice, and then stood next to the bulletin board, which would not block anyone from passing by, and she could see what was posted on it.
The bulletin board was full of recent passenger ship information, including destinations, ports and various price points, and Esther checked her wallet, if it was a long-distance voyage, third class was her limit.
"Is there a place you'd like to go? I can recommend you a few reliable boats. β
Hearing this, Esther immediately looked sideways.
The middle-aged man was dressed similarly to a police uniform, but without any identification badge, instead with a seagull badge on his chest. His exposed cheeks and hands were bronzed and coarse, apparently succumbed by years of exposure to the sun.
"Thank you for your kindness, I'm just taking a casual look. Because my buddy hasn't arrived yet, I'm waiting for him. β
"I guess too! A delicate girl like you, don't wander around alone, the sun on the sea is not as easy as in the story. β
Esther smiled back at the gentleman who seemed to be a guard: "But you have to go to the sea to experience it for yourself to know what kind of life it is." β
The guard pointed to the bulletin board: "Then you can see where you want to go, and wait for your friend to come and decide, I know several reliable captains, no matter where you go, there is a guarantee of credibility." β
Esther nodded, swept the "destination" column, there were not many ships heading to Fenerport to the west, but she saw a special word, and subconsciously read it:
"Bansey?"
The pronunciation of the name of this area is quite similar to the Giant's "Bincy", and Esther guesses that it is the place mentioned by the "evil spirit" and "Red Angel" Medici in the underground ruins of Beckland.
Hearing that she was interested in this place, the guard interjected, "That place is not normal, I don't recommend you to go there." Bansey Harbour is also known as the 'Weather Museum', and as you can imagine, the island's climate is always changing dramatically and is very strange. β
"So peculiar? Wouldn't the approach to the island make the ship vulnerable to distress? β
"There is nothing wrong with the normal routes. The storm was on top, and after they built a church on the island, there were far fewer strange things there. β
Esther nodded: "But such a strange island should be quite attractive to tourists?" β
"Hehe, I've heard that the locals there eat animal blood, use the blood to concoct blood clots or something, and then make a dish, there are always brave tourists who want to try it, anyway, I haven't tried it."
Esther's eyes lit up suddenly.
Blood tofu?
Just as she was about to ask again, a cold voice sounded behind her:
"Hamel?"
Esther looked back and saw a young man wearing a half-height silk top hat and gold-rimmed glasses.
He wears all-black gloves on both hands, carries a suitcase in one hand, and carries a gentlemanly cane in the other, his black hair is combed very closely, and his temperament is sharp when he straightens his face, and his facial features are sharp and angular.
Esther was sure that she had never seen this man, but that his features had a vague shadow, which gave her some kind of strange intuition, and she could immediately identify the slightly familiar man in front of her as Klein.
This made Esther smile from the bottom of her heart:
"Good day, sir."
"Gelman Sparrow. It's an honor to meet you, Miss Hamel Brooke. β
The young man held out his hand at Esther, and although there was still no expression on his face, there was an unadorned smile in his eyes.
This is the pseudonym that Esther wanted to use during their casual conversation.
"I'm honored to meet you, too, Mr. Sparrow."
"Just call me Gelman."
The young man nodded with a straight face, which made Esther's smile deeper, and she immediately understood the current situation:
I'm really trying to play it with all my heart, Klein......
Happy Dragon Boat Festival. Today's three watches, one watch.
