Chapter 194: Between Trading and Night
As Asther walked up the stairs, there was an even louder shout from the ring, as if one of the fighters had eaten a straight punch and several people were yelling in exasperation.
Listening to the bartender, Mr. Jonas doesn't seem to have a good temper.
She tightened the strap of her satchel, and the gold pounds that the "Hermit" lady had provided to the information had already been obtained by Esther by praying for the "Fool's" gift, at least she could afford some of the premium in this matter.
The soundproofing on the second floor was not good, and Ashte, as the bartender had said, walked straight to the room on the right, pushed the door and walked in.
There were two faded leather couches, a low coffee table with a book propped up one leg, and a variety of cabinets that took up half the room, most of which were mottled and scratched, and some even had mold, as if they had been dragged straight out of the garbage.
On the low coffee table were open bottles and glasses, but they were empty, and the remnants of the liquor evaporated into the air, mixing with the subtle sour smell of the room.
Esther regretted taking her wine upstairs, knowing that it was better to leave the glass at the bar, although she was not clean, but there was a damp musty smell in the room that could not be dispersed, and perhaps the window had never been opened for ventilation.
Probably the cleanest thing in the room was the cashmere blanket, under which was a middle-aged man with his beer belly rising and falling with his breathing, his scruffy, curly beard covering his chin and making him look even older.
The hairline on the man's forehead is so high that it forms a "bay", and it won't be long before the remaining flaxen hair on the top of his head will probably turn from sparse to disappear. In the noise coming from the first floor, the middle-aged man snored like a roar with his mouth wide open, which could even drown out the movement downstairs.
Esther walked over to the middle-aged man and cleared her throat, "Hmm, sir? Mr. Jonas!"
When the middle-aged man heard his name called, he opened his sleepy eyes, and he inhaled the red rosacea twice, his brow contorted: "Who...... Who are you and what are you doing?"
Esther wasn't sure if the man was still sober enough, he looked like he had been in a wine bath, and his whole body smelled strange, but she still told the middle-aged man the way the "hanged man" told her, "I'm here to get my identification, and it should have been done in time."
Jonas sat up from the couch, stretched out his finger and began to count at Esther: "Day by day, everyone walks in illegal business, and calls people like cattle and horses! How can we do this without taking risks? Just a little money, let alone supporting a family, it's not enough to drink, and you can't even sleep!"
Esther immediately remembered the bartender's kind reminder and quickly interjected, "'Captain, it' the captain asked me to come!"
Jonas smacked his mouth twice, as if he had silently recited the title twice: "No name, no surname?"
"Yes."
"Hey, I said it earlier!" Jonas slapped his thigh hard, and after a loud slap, he subconsciously rubbed the painful part of the fan, "It turns out that stinky boy asked someone to send a message, and the identification certificate I made was for someone else." I thought he had drifted for so many years and finally had an illegitimate child—"
Esther hurriedly took out the fifty gold pounds she had prepared in advance from her pocket, handed it to Jonas, and blocked the words behind him:
"No, I asked him, and this is also for my friend, who came all the way to Port Plitz from the Eastern End, and it is really inconvenient to leave without identification......
Jonas counted the amount of gold pounds, and finally stopped gossiping about the gossip of the "upside-down man". Grabbing the stack of gold pounds, he walked over to the cupboards that occupied half the room, took off a large bunch of keys from his waist, and shoved one of them into the keyhole with trembling hands.
Jonas hiccuped and thumped his chest twice before shoving the gold pound into a drawer.
In order to avoid suspicion, Esther did not lean over, but waited by the couch and drank half and half of the cup in small gulps. She watched as Jonas leaned over and struggled to open another drawer, rummaging through it for a long time before turning around with a ball of oiled paper packets.
"Finally found it, in the end
Who put it so hidden, and it is not hiding money......
Hearing such a thoughtless complaint, coupled with the bunch of keys, Esther was sure that Jonas had put it away himself.
"Thank you, then I won't bother you." After Esther took the paper bag, she opened it and checked the identification documents prepared for "Ribbit Brooke" inside, and then nodded at Jonas.
Jonas grabbed the wine bottle on the table casually, but after pouring it for a long time and finding that there were not a few drops of wine, he embarrassedly put it back in its place: "Seriously, very few people will help children get fake identification, usually the adults who come to me are adults, adults, and those who do not see the light of business......
"Then I'll go first, goodbye, Mr. Jonas."
Jonas grabbed two handfuls of mustaches from his face, and when he saw that the other party was not interested, he stopped muttering and waved his hand casually at the lady by the door.
Esther walked briskly downstairs and placed her empty glass on the edge of the bar.
The bartender picked up the empty glass: "Jonas is awake? Great, I really hope he will come down and take care of these bastards as soon as possible, there is a brainless person who has lost too much, and he is almost in the ring by himself."
"Well, I woke Mr. Jonas up. But has he always been like that? Looks drunk."
The bartender shrugged casually, "If you're a man, chances are you'll be greeted not by broken thoughts, but by his fists. Would you like another drink?"
Esther shook her head repeatedly, "No, I'd better go back quickly...... There's no need to stay and see how Mr. Jonas manages order in the tavern."
"It's fun to watch those guys get beaten and scolded by Jonas, it's one of the few pleasures in my life."
When a drinker heard this, he unceremoniously yelled at the bartender across the bar, and there was an even louder noise from the ring, drowning out all the swear words of the drinker.
Esther shook her head and walked quickly out of the Pelican Tavern, the streets outside were empty, and two rats screamed out of the sewers and ran to the back of the tavern.
At this point in time, there were very few horse-drawn rental carriages on the streets, and Esther waited for ten minutes, until the movement in the tavern behind her grew louder and louder, and two groggy drunks were kicked out and fell to the side of the street.
And Jonas's recognizable hoarse voice rang out in the bar: "If you don't be honest, I'll beat them out one by one!"
Just as Esther was hesitating whether to go back to the excitement, a horse-drawn cab drove slowly, and she quickly reached out to stop the coachman in the broad-brimmed straw hat, whose face was completely hidden in the shadow of the straw hat.
The carriage stopped right in front of her, and the coachman's calm voice came from the shadows, with an inexplicable smile: "Ma'am, it's not safe to wander outside so late, where are you going?"
Esther was about to speak, when suddenly, the sound of a magpie chirping in a hoarse voice sounded above her head.
The moment Esther subconsciously looked up, the magpie suddenly flew down, its thin paws clasping her shoulders.
The next moment, the scene in front of Esther's eyes changed rapidly.
The coachman lifted the brim of his hat to reveal the monocle in his right eye socket.
He glanced helplessly in the direction of the bar, shook his head at where Esther had stood, and then drove the carriage slowly towards the end of the street.
By the time Esther's eyes were fixed, she was already standing behind an ordinary two-story building.
The backyard is planted with thorn bushes with red roses, only a few sunflowers stand in the corner area, and the garden does not look very pleasing to the owner, and the ground is simply paved with stone slabs, and there is no trace of decoration.
The magpie was still standing on Esther's shoulder, quietly watching her, waiting for her to speak.
Esther looked at the house behind her, "Mr. Benjamin, this is what you told me earlier
"Well, the back door is locked." The magpie sat down on Esther's shoulder, and although she couldn't see a bird's expression, Esther could intuitively sense that Benjamin was a little sullen.
Now that the back door is locked, Ace
I climbed over the fence on the side of the garden and walked to the main entrance.
Seeing her go around the house for most of the time, the magpie couldn't help but speak, "Actually, I mean you can steal the distance and go straight into the house through the back door."
Esther was silent for two seconds before she whispered, "At least this is the first time I've visited, well, of course it's more polite to go through the main door......
"You forgot you can do this."
"Yes, I forgot."
The magpie sighed and chuckled, "You should get used to the 'thief's mindset, that will make you look less offbeat on ***."
Esther nodded, and she had already stood in front of the door of this ordinary house, and saw the wooden door painted all black, and the strange and beautiful pattern of white flowers on it:
"Is this a symbol of your family?"
The magpie was still crouching on Esther's shoulder, and had no intention of coming down to open the door: "Well, the coat of arms of the Jacob family."
Esther looked at the strange white flower, "What is this flower called?"
"The ghost orchid, it doesn't grow in the soil, but clings to other trees with green ribbon-like roots. But it's an epiphyte, not a parasitic plant, and lives on itself." The magpie looked sideways at Esther's expression, "But not many people know about it now, and this flower basically only exists in ancient books......
Like a few withered "thief" families.
Esther stopped at the door, and walked into the house without pushing the door: "Actually, I should go. The rabbit is still at the inn, I should have gone back sooner......
"Come in and have a cup of tea, it won't take long." The magpie whispered.
Esther was a little surprised to hear his gentle tone, so she didn't shirk it again, "Okay."
The magpie looked back, glanced at the empty street, and then quickly retracted his gaze: "If you don't mind, there seems to be some carrot cake at home, I don't have a sweet tooth, I don't have much preparation."
"It's okay, I won't stay long."
