Chapter 561: Controversy and Resolution
"Dangchang!" Danny's fork for the barbecue was knocked aside by Erin's knife, and the two glared at each other, and the table suddenly smelled of gunpowder.
"Are you two going to fight, like you did when you were kids? It's a weekend dinner, not an unrestricted fight, so please maintain table manners. Frank Reagan glanced at the two of them quietly.
"Let's listen to what the assistant prosecutor has to say, and whether she is ready to stand on the moral high ground and judge us low-level little policemen."
Danny's words made Jack cast a meaningful look at him, this guy is really thick and thin, and the meaning of these words is obviously digging a hole for his sister.
Erin didn't notice it, and rolled her eyes at him, "Sounds like you're pretty proud of slapping someone and stuffing someone's head in the toilet?" β
"Daddy, Daddy, did you shove someone's head down the toilet?" Danny's youngest son exclaimed with excitement and curiosity.
"Shut up." Danny turned his head and glared at the confused baby son, silently threatening with his lips, and then showed a "fierce light" to his sister, "What do you want to express?" β
"In my opinion, you should enforce the law impartially, not by your own temper, which will only do bad things." Erin demonstratively showed off the barbecue she had snatched from her brother and chewed slowly.
"You don't know what happened, it's just a subjective assumption." Danny took the barbecue that his father gave him again, and returned the salute to his sister.
"You should respect the procedure, the law always has its raison d'Γͺtre." Erin tried to reason.
"That's right, protect criminals." The old man Henry chuckled lightly and directly started the violent argument, obviously the granddaughter's tone made the old-school police officer a little unhappy, or because of Danny's previous hateful words, he directly isolated Erin, the only one who was not a police officer at the scene.
"Grandpa!" Erin couldn't believe that the old man was so partial to her brother, and she didn't realize that she had been led into a trap before.
She turned to look at her father, "Daddy, what do you think?" What the hell will New York be if you allow the police to use excessive force and violent torture? β
"Uh" Frank Regan hesitated for a moment before he spoke, but he didn't mean to side with his daughter either.
"Nobody likes corporal torture, my dear, but some things are not purely legal matters, but judging the timing of the action, and I'll give you an example.
Now there's a ticking time bomb out there, people's lives are at stake, and you have an informed suspect in your hands, are his rights more important than those innocent victims? β
Speaking of this, he seemed to feel that there was something wrong with everyone helping the eldest son, his eyes swept over the people on the long table, fell on the younger son, his eyes lit up, and he quickly transferred the firepower.
"Jimmy, what do you think? You have a law degree, and now you're a patrolman. β
It seems that the youngest child in every family is the most favored by his parents, but he is also the one who is bullied the most by his older siblings.
James Reagan graduated from Harvard Law School, but resolutely chose to follow his father and brother into the police department, not an unassertive character, but that is outside, at home is another matter.
He knew that he couldn't hide now, but the two sides of the dispute, one eldest brother and the other was the second sister, he really didn't want to offend any of them, so he simply talked about it.
"It wasn't until I picked up the gun that I realized how important the discretion in my hands was, and that if I didn't control it properly, it could have disastrous consequences, as Erin feared."
The eldest brother Danny scoffed at this little brother who was not firm enough, "Wait, my dear little brother, wait until one night when you chase the prisoner to a dark alley, but you can't tell what the little thing in the other party's hand is, maybe it's a gun, maybe it's not, hehe"
Sure enough, James's position turned to the eldest brother again, "It's true that I can express my opinions casually during the discussion, but I don't know what to do when this kind of thing really happens." β
Don't look at Erin is almost 40 years old, she was still a strong independent woman before, but at this time, maybe because she was at home, she was surrounded by her father who doted on her the most, and seeing that she didn't even have a supporter, she turned her eyes directly to Jack.
"Hey, Jack, tell me what you would have done if you were Danny."
"Jack was there at the scene, of course he was on my side," Danny said before he could finish his words, but saw Frank Reagan slam the knife in his hand on the table, and the brother and sister who were still arguing suddenly became dumbfounded.
"Erin, you've crossed the line, Jack is a guest, this behavior is so rude."
Erin also realized that she was a little excessive, and quickly apologized to him, "Sorry, Jack, I just"
Seeing her admit her mistake so simply, thinking of the previous quarrel between the two brothers and sisters in the parking lot, Jack became interested in saying a few words.
"Actually, I don't think your point of view is wrong, Danny's behavior did cause trouble for the district prosecutor, and now it is also true that Donald Bens may be acquitted."
"Jack?" Danny didn't expect to capsize at Jack's place, with a hurt look of betrayal from his good brother.
"Let me finish my sentence." Jack motioned for the guy to be calm, "Actually, in my opinion, your brother and sister should have the same purpose, both hope to bring the criminal to justice.
But your position determines the difference in the way of thinking, and in this matter, you are all wrong, and you are wrong in your concept. β
He deliberately slowed down the pace of his speech to give the audience time to think.
"The police and the prosecutor are never on opposite sides, but the reason why you have conflicts is because you are passing the buck to each other.
The public prosecutor believes that the police must be meticulous in handling cases, fulfill their duties, and hand over a perfect case to themselves, thus ignoring the various objective problems that the police will encounter in the actual process of handling cases.
The police, on the other hand, rarely see the prosecutor as one of their side, always nitpicking, ignoring the fact that the prosecutor's job is to send the criminals they arrest to prison. β
Jack's words silenced everyone, and for a moment only the children at the table were left looking at the contemplative adults with ignorant expressions, poking the food with their forks in boredom and making tuk-tuk sounds.
Danny's wife, Linda, whispers a scolding at her two troublemakers, then gives Jack an embarrassed smile.
"You're right, Jack." Frank Reagan sighed, looking at the siblings with a look of anger.
"I hope your words will wake up these two fools, and I know that Erin was never a virgin, and she wanted to give that brute a shot in the forehead more than anyone else."
Sure enough, the old father still helped the little padded jacket, and at the end of his life, he still helped his baby daughter explain.
Although there were some disputes during the meal, Jack still liked the family atmosphere of the Reagan family, and it could be seen that the relationship of the family was quite good, and they also had their own division of labor and positioning, not the kind of upper-class family with intrigue.
Or maybe it really has something to do with the traditional family-oriented notions of people of Irish descent, as well as their Catholic beliefs, which seem out of step with the Protestant nation of the United States.
After lunch, the women began to clean up the table again, and the old men, including Jack, were called to the living room, and Frank Reagan solemnly took out a wooden box, opened it, and saw that there were six neatly arranged "cannons" inside.
"Wow, this one is mine." Danny's eyes were quick, and he grabbed one and put it in his mouth.
"Don't smoke it in the room, and it's for you to celebrate." Frank handed one to Jack, turned his head to look at his youngest son's stunned eyes, hesitated, and handed him one.
"When did you learn this?"
"I didn't learn, but the next time Danny bullies me, it's my talisman." James took the cigar and solemnly put it in his pocket.
"It seems like you're confident that we'll be able to successfully get Donald Bens to prison." Jack put away his cigar as well, smiling and teasing.
"I've heard of BAU's fame for a long time, and I have a collection of every biography of David Rossi." Frank winked at him.
Jack thought of a writer's request, "Anyway, there happened to be a famous person who wanted me to ask you for something." β
He talked about Cassel's outrageous-sounding request, but he didn't expect Frank to look interested.
