Chapter VI: Discussion of Slavery

Andy leaves Colhoti's grocery store and heads to the slave yard across the road.

With a strange feeling of not knowing what to say, Andy walked to the place where the door was sturdy and the windows were sealed.

After pushing the door in, I was greeted by a space separated by a wooden plank, similar to the front desk of a hotel, where stood a middle-aged chubby man with a goatee, the light in his eyes was mature and quiet, of course, the hairstyle and dress still revealed a tribal taste, such as the white oil paint stripes on the other party's face and blackened feet.

In the corner, there was also a black-footed warrior who seemed to be taking a nap.

Andy glanced at the black-footed warrior and saw that it was the man he had seen directing the slaves to clear the pastures with a whip on the west side of the village, and it seemed that this place was indeed dedicated to managing slaves.

As he approached, Goatee looked up at Andy, and then said unhurriedly, "It seems that an outsider has arrived, did you come to me to buy slaves?" ”

"Hmm..... Can you ask about the price? ”

Andy hesitated for a moment and chose this opening topic.

The goatee nodded, and there was no nonsense.

"250 caps for a frail person or an old man, 300 caps for an older woman who can work, 500 caps for a woman of the right age for reproduction, 700 caps for a strong man who can work, and we don't deal in other categories."

Andy listened, and his heart twitched, and the other party was like the previous grocery store owner who casually told these clearly marked prices, but behind this information corresponded to living people.

Frowning, he decided to try to get some answers from the man in charge of slavery in Blackfoot's village, and see if he could better understand Blackfoot's mind.

"I heard your name is Dominic, right? I.... Can I ask you some questions about slaves? ”

Dominic nodded, looking like a quiet and efficient man.

"You can just check the slaves and judge for yourself, but it doesn't seem like you really want to buy slaves, I kind of understand your intentions outsiders, although it's not common for people like you to come to Blackfoot Village, but I did encounter them. Since I don't have anything else to do right now, I can answer some of your questions, don't think that blackfoot people are paranoid people who can't listen to anything, in fact we are open and tolerant to a certain extent. ”

This answer exceeded Andy's expectations, he thought that all the barbarians he got in this group of barbarians were barbarian answers, but it turned out that he met one after another people who broke the label in his heart in the village of Blackfoot.

“.... Thank you for your generosity and open-mindedness, I do have some questions that I don't know if it's appropriate, such as.... What do you think about slavery? You know, in fact, as far as I know, not every settlement enforces this system, even to the extent that it is famous in a large area like Blackfoot? ”

Dominic looked down and thought for a moment, playing with an iron chain in his hand, Andy looked at it and felt that it should be the chain used to hold the bicycle before the war, and now it is self-evident what this group of natives is using for it.

"I can answer this question of you.... For Blackfoot, slavery is a tradition, and our ancestors have long ago taken slaves and ordered them to work for us, so we continue to do so in their ways. Slavery allowed us to never lack labor and was an important element of trade. ”

Dominic beckoned to Andy and walked over to a heavily reinforced metal door behind him, unlocking it and opening a gap.

"You see, all the people here are slaves."

Andy looked through the crack in the door and found that it was supposed to be a pre-war supermarket, and there were still a lot of shelves and other things left, many slaves were chained there and could not leave, and one end of their collar or shackles was firmly locked by a chain-like item similar to the one in Dominic's hand, and they were wearing thin gray-white clothes, which seemed to be uniforms specially used to distinguish the status of slaves.

Closing the door, Dominic watched as Andy continued to slowly state his point.

"Do you know where these slaves come from? In fact, everywhere there is.... There are those from the north, those from the east, and those from the west.... Slave traders collect slaves from all over the world and send them all the way here to trade with us, and we also trade with those slave traders who come here to buy goods, is it our slavery that makes them slaves? No, even if we were no longer engaged in the slave trade, these people would still be captured as slaves by slave traders for various reasons, so if there is anyone who should be responsible for their current situation, it should be the first person to catch them or themselves. ”

Andy looked at the calm Dominic in front of him, a little stunned and speechless.

"But.... But if you enslave people like that, and force them to work, and make them live like animals every day, one day some of you may be treated like this, even if it is your tradition, even if it is your culture, and no one thinks that this kind of behavior should be eliminated? ”

Dominic still looked at Andy calmly, seemingly unsurprised by Andy's doubts.

"Outsider, you don't know us well enough.... But don't worry, I can answer your questions. For Blackfoot Village, we believe in prowess, and we've seen with our own eyes how countless cowardly and powerless people have perished in this cruel wasteland, so we know we must stay strong if we want to survive. Therefore, sufficient population, labor and bottle caps are what we need... We also have agricultural and pastoral trade, but you see, they still contribute far less to the village than the slave trade I manage. ”

"You mentioned the treatment of slaves, and in fact, our treatment of slaves is normal in all places where slaves are used. I'm guessing you haven't heard of some real brutal slavery what it looks like, but I've heard slave traders who come here say that their biggest customers are in a place to the east called the Reservation. There, people are like firewood. A newly sent slave has to work to death in black and white, and their lifespan is no more than three years, and it will be measured in months... Still, the benefits of using slaves in this way outweighed the costs, so they continued to use slaves in this way, and the slave traders were more than happy to make such large and lasting orders with them. ”

"How could a qualified slave owner treat his slaves like cattle and kill the Brahmins they had worked so hard to raise?"
