Chapter 2: The Way of the Brain
Dr. Goddard immediately returned to the research think tank project after completing a thorough analysis of the tonic cream.
He wanted to find another one from these brains that was easy to use, and the tank brain was a very good slave... Assistants, although these brains generally have some mental problems, but they have a lot of pre-war scientific and technological knowledge and are familiar enough with the equipment of the Great Dome.
So far, half of the 25 brains in the best state selected from thousands of brains have been investigated, but only one brain can be of great use, and the rest either can't be turned on or have fallen into a state of brain death for many years and can never wake up again, or even more terrifying, they are completely crazy, and if they are released, it will only increase the hidden danger for themselves.
"So, do you understand what I'm talking about?" A newly elected brain greeted Dr. Goddard.
Dr. Goddard looked at the guy in front of him with a gloomy face, he wasn't entirely sure if this guy was still valuable, but as time passed, the final judgment would come to pass.
"Ahem.—" He didn't answer in time, but coughed twice, and although the severe new plague was temporarily relieved by the tonic cream, the effect was not as pronounced as that of the mild patients, and Dr. Goddard still couldn't sleep all night because of the pain while the others were almost back to normal.
The blue blisters on the big bald head, some of which had festered, were barely able to continue working thanks to Dr. Agnes' constant medication.
With one hand propped up on the table in front of him, Dr. Goddard stood up reluctantly, ready to type the Think Tank's personality embedding toggle command, which he didn't understand very well, but he thought it was nothing more than another neurosis.
"You're in pain, I can hear your gasps, like a bellows... What disease do you have? Is it lung cancer? I've seen that pain, and you must be desperate to get rid of this constant pain right now, right? The brain said these words strangely, and his voice actually carried a terrifying sense of demagogy.
Dr. Goddard was indeed suffering from his illness, and if it was his usual state, he would not hesitate to give this self-talking guy a blow, and then directly turn off his voice module.... But in this state, Dr. Goddard hesitated for a moment.
"You think about what you're going to tell me." The veins on his braised head bulged out, and there was no positive emotion in his bloodshot eyes.
The brain's words made him a little interested, but it wasn't necessarily a good thing for the brain.
"Of course I know what I'm going to say to you, and I want to talk to you about what exactly pain is." The brain speaks logically and clearly, not like the crazy people before it.
"As a scientist .... I believe that you should be a scientist, and you should understand that all the suffering that people suffer is essentially just an electrical signal received by your brain, some of which originate from the ends of your nerves, and some can even be made directly from your brain.... But whether it's real pain or phantom pain, in the final analysis, they are all fake. "On the green screen, the pattern of the brain flickered, with a sense of bewitchment.
"Everything you feel is an electrical signal, pain is just one of the electrical signals, it works to draw the brain's attention to the damage to the body, to remind you that your body is wrong or is being damaged.... But, so what? Of course, people will die eventually, but often they do not die because of pain or because of death, and more often than not, pain is meaningless, but adds endless torture to you.... Those electrical signals can't affect your life or death at all, they are just pain, the suffering that your genes have created for you, the suffering you are born with! ”
"Pain not only tortures you, but it also clouds your perception, think about it, do you know what chili pepper tastes like? ..... It's hard to know exactly what it tastes like because before you can taste it, the pain, the intense pain sweeps over your brain, the spicy taste is actually a pain sensation, and you have no idea what the pepper actually tastes like! ”
"This is just one example, there are many, many more similar situations...... Do you understand that people can have the ability to transcend suffering, and you want to know how to do it? Dr. Goddard stared at him, just listening, but not saying a word.
"Why don't you speak? ... Because you're bored? "The brain is a little chattering, after all, this is the first time he has had a chance to wake up in I don't know how long.
"I've seen children with painless who don't live happily and often unconsciously hurt their bodies without pain, eventually causing irreparable damage. She didn't know what the danger was because she didn't feel pain, she didn't care if she broke her legs, she didn't care if she cut her fingers, and there were possibilities in life that could take her life, but she didn't even establish the corresponding judgment, and the end that greeted her would only be early death.... When she is old enough to understand this, there will still be pain in her heart that she cannot get rid of. Dr. Goddard responded indifferently to the other's demagogy.
The brain hummed meaninglessly, and seemed to have its own set of logic.
"It's different from what I said, on a different level.... The child just passively loses the physical pain because of the congenital defect, and the psychological pain is often the real terrible thing. You know what? People have a self-destructive mechanism, and many human organs will automatically start to destroy themselves under negative emotions, such as the stomach and liver... But people are always unavoidable, sometimes falling into extreme negative emotions, every time the emotion is out of control, it will accelerate the countdown of life, and it will make your heart become like being stabbed by a soldering iron - pain. Dr. Goddard was about to speak, when a mouthful of phlegm made him cough violently, and the pain rushed into his mind with each cough, as if a knife had cut into his body.
When he stood up straight with a flushed face, he only felt that the world was spinning.
"Do you feel it? From those pains.... Smart people should be able to feel it. If you can feel it.. The next time pain strikes, take a deep breath, feel it, feel what is hidden behind that pain.... I'm sure you can feel it if you're sensitive enough. Is that... Is that.... It's the sixth sense, and it's the seventh sense, and even the eighth sense, which is bound by the human body... Yes, you can do that with hard work, too. First of all, you need to do self-isolation, isolation from pain... Pluck your mind out of the mire of endless suffering, stand on the shore, and if you can do it, you can watch the pain on the sidelines. ”
"And then, in the midst of watching, you go back to the beginning, words can't make you understand those images, to feel, the fish to feel the water, the snake to feel the heat, even the bacteria and microbes, their senses... You can even feel the concept of death itself, the concept of life itself, know what those feelings are, and then.... It's the universe, it's the dimension, it's time! Dr. Goddard smiled sarcastically, remembering that he had stumbled upon a book when he was doing research in NcR, which was a canon used by a cult to brainwash its followers, no matter how fanciful the theories in between, in the final analysis, it was just a vain attempt to make people's minds fall into a fantasy world and then give up all power in the material world, so as to facilitate the cult leader to use it for personal gain.
He looked up and asked a rhetorical question.
"Since you said so, then you must have followed your theory and put it into practice? But although life is often accompanied by pain, there is an average upper limit to pain, and if you can really have the senses you are talking about, do you need to feel a lot of pain before you can succeed? Do you want others to take pleasure in their pain? Wouldn't it be possible that successful people like you would need to help in this process? The brain was silent for a while, but it denied this tendency.
"It's not about taking pleasure in pain .... It is to control the pain, and to withdraw from the pain is not the same as to fall into the quagmire of pleasure again, pain and pleasure can be the quagmire that covers the human heart, and only by getting rid of their shackles and then harnessing them, can people get out of it... That's what I want to be, and... I've reached it because I've found a good way, do you want to know how to do it? Dr. Goddard looked at the brain in front of him and frowned.
Without hesitation, he pressed the button.
