Chapter 6: Pablo

Saying goodbye to Sheriff Ralph, where Andy learns where the inn is. It was getting late, and the elevator at the top of the Hoover Dam, the central area of the Hoover Dam, as the people here call the inner city of the dam, was closed at night.

As a result, Andy can only find a hotel at the top of the dam now, and the only option he knows of is .... A nicely renovated shack appeared in front of Andy, but it was almost empty, unlike the one further west where the food was good but the wine was terrible

"Old Nakamura Izakaya", this one has no visitors at all. It's a sleek store by wasteland standards, with lots of lights hanging everywhere, hot posters on the walls, no dirt or garbage, and the store is neat, spacious and atmospheric, the only problem is that it's still full of people.

The name of the shop is a bit strange, it's called: "Be careful with the café and liquor". He walked into the empty store and saw a drunken man sleeping on a chair behind the counter.

The man was in his forties, dark-skinned with short black hair, a fat build, and a very friendly face, wearing a dirty brown shirt on the upper half of his body and a pair of somewhat worn jeans on the lower half.

A few bottles were still on the side, apparently drinking and having fun before Andy arrived, and cerumen was drunk at the end.

Andy looked around the store, and judging from the traces, there was indeed not a single customer here in a short period of time, and some of the tables had some floating dust.

The guy sleeping behind the counter was probably the owner of the bar, and it seemed that he didn't think anyone would come to his shop at all, so he couldn't afford to get drunk.

Speaking of alcohol, the shelves behind the counter that should have been filled with all kinds of liquor are now empty.

"Knock knock—" He reached out and knocked on the counter, and the sleeping guy woke up after a stir, rubbing his eyes and looking at a guest standing in front of him in disbelief.

"Oh.... Oh hello.... Well, you're here? Andy was a little speechless as he looked at the wine stain on the collar of his boss's shirt.

"I'm here to find a place to live." The fat boss took the empty wine bottle behind the counter, and then his expression was a little hesitant.

"Oh yes, I do have an empty room here. But.... The price is a little higher, 300 caps per room, you can stay in it for three days...."Andy raised his eyebrows.

"Huh? Are you kidding me? In a normal place, even if you can only stay for one night, it is only 10-20 bottle caps, why are you so expensive here? The fat boss waved his hand again and again.

"It's not... That's all different, you listen to me explain it to you. The hotels you're talking about offer only a broken mattress that has mold and insects on the floor of a black-painted shack, but I'm offering upscale accommodation with real beds, clean rooms, and even three meals a day. And guess what? I've provided a room just north of the dam crest, so you can safely look down on the water from your window, and with the added surprise of watching monsters fight in the water on moonlit nights. When he said this, Andy still thought that the price was a little more reliable, but it was still expensive.

"But it's too little to stay for three days, right? You'll have to give me another better price, 100 caps, or I'd better go back to my car and sleep until the next day, and then go to a cheaper hotel in the center. When the fat boss heard this, he was immediately shaken, and he could see that the absence of guests had hit him hard recently.

"That's 150 bottle caps, you don't need to go down there and find that bastard Dusty's shop to live in, that place is dirty and crowded, how can it compare to my living conditions here?" The two chatted for a while, and finally closed the deal with 150 bottle caps for three days of accommodation but only one meal a day.

He carried the key and Andy to a place not far away near the eastern edge of the dam crest, where several heavily armed NcR soldiers were gathering and sneaking around not knowing what they were doing.

Andy quietly reached for the holster with one hand, and his eyes could already see some chemicals that didn't make it up to the table next to the campfire where the GIs had gathered before.

"What for?" The leading soldier coughed a few times with pretended to be calm, and motioned with his eyes to the others to quickly cover or hide their things.

"It's me, it's me, Pablo Riviera, the one who opened the shop at the top of the dam, I just brought guests to stay in the house, I didn't see anything and didn't do anything...."The fat boss raised his hands and said innocently, and the leading soldier squinted and saw that the things had been packed up and didn't want to stay here, and muttered something to him casually as he left: "Don't walk around at night"

"This is a military area, no matter how close you dare to kill"

"I won't let you go next time" or something like that. The flattering smile on Pablo's face finally dissipated as the soldiers took out the campfire with their belongings and walked to a more remote place, and he spat into the darkness, then led Andy to a nicely built hut next to it, and opened the door with the key on his waist.

There were three such shacks, each with two beds, and Pablo was right, the environment was indeed very good, better than that provided by most of the inns in the wasteland.

But obviously, because of the price, no one comes here to live like Andy.

"I used to be very popular here, and that was my happiest day." Pablo was a little lonely when he looked at the high-end house that he had built with all the effort, skillful means, and so much investment.

"Back then, the Brotherhood of Steel bastards weren't as rampant as they are now, and the rich people from the west and the merchants from the east liked to come to my tavern for a drink and then pay a premium to come here for a night to see the monsters in the water..... But since the bad guys were doing something, these rooms have not been inhabited anymore. Andy sat on the bed, it was indeed a genuine bed, and he was quite satisfied.

"Is your tavern also expensive? Now that there are no customers at all, and even the shop opened by the strange old man in the west has so many people, won't you change the price? When Pablo heard this, his face immediately turned bitter.

"No, my tavern is just a cheap consumption, the old man Nakamura brewed his own wine is undrinkable to death, and the people who go to his side mainly eat the roasted witch snake he made.... The reason why I don't have anyone here is because.... Because I'm out of stock. Andy gave Pablo a strange look.

"What do you mean it's out of stock? There are a lot of caravans here, and when I came here, I saw that there were still a lot of merchants coming in and out, and even if New California was cut off from the Hoover Dam, wouldn't trade in the east not be cut off? Pablo's face was even more bitter.

"You don't understand .... Alas... I really regret dying. I should have chosen the Crimson Caravan as my supplier, but the price offered by the three brothers was better at the time, and I signed a contract with them in a moment of confusion, and I was hated by the Crimson Caravan. Sheriff Ralph has always told me that ex-convict dogs can't change their eating and are not trustworthy at all.... I didn't take it seriously at the time, but now it's a good thing that the three brothers caravan hasn't provided me with decent goods for a long time. ”

"I couldn't find a place to get supplies, I didn't have any alcohol or food to sell, and most of the customers went to the shop in the center of the city where that guy from Dusty was drinking.... God, the best liquor at Hoover Dam used to be the spirits I sold here, but now I don't have anything here. Andy was surprised to hear the news, isn't the Three Brothers Caravan one of the only two caravan companies in Hoover Dam, how could it not be supplied....

"So why is that? Have you inquired? Pablo crouched in the corner with a dejected face.

"Hmph.... What's the use, every time they say they can't do it now, tell me to wait a little longer, but how long has it been waiting? I just drank those bottles of stock wine that came out of the corner of the storeroom all day long, and the Hoover Dam is now like this, and it would have been difficult to do business in the first place, and I have had no business here for so long.... I've come here in New California with a debt, and this goes on.—" He barely got up from the corner and staggered away.
