Chapter 3: A New Companion
"Otto?" Andy was walking with Blackie on the way to park the Atomic Humvee, when he was suddenly stopped by this ghoul, he was smiling, wearing a dark green workman's jumpsuit, which looked quite clean, not like the one he always wore that was stained with engine oil, he had deliberately changed into a new dress, and one of them was carrying a small delicate metal box.
"Ah, meet Andy again, I have something to say to you." There was some embarrassment on his faceless face.
Andy looked twice and saw that there seemed to be some bruises on the side of Otto's cheeks and the top of his head that were directly exposed from the beating.
"What's the matter? I've heard you've been beaten, is it serious? Otto touched the swollen part of his head, touching the various tools that had been inserted between his muscles.
"It's nothing, I used to get beaten all the time for various reasons, and I'm used to it. However, it was also because of this incident that I finally made up my mind to free myself from the endless work, the water purifier at the Hoover Dam now completely does not need me to bother to maintain it anymore, it is really not far from the end, and the rest of the groundwork Diane can be completely completed, so well. Otto pointed at Andy.
"I wondered, would you like to bring a maintenance attendant? I can help you fix something or solve some problems related to mechanical engineering... Well, the ghouls have very little physiological needs, so you hardly need to think about my diet. If you're not that sensitive to smells... I'd like to say that my old ghoul doesn't smell as exaggerated it used to be, anyway—" He said Ai Ai expectingly, looking like he really wanted to go with Andy, and those cautious words were presumably due to the constant discrimination he had encountered from other humans over the years.
Andy pondered and asked Otto about his physical fitness.
"Oh, of course I know Otto you're good at that, and I don't really mind traveling with ghouls, but if you move with me, you're going to face all kinds of battles, can you at least do it without holding me back?" The old ghoul snorted and pulled out a revolver that looked like it had been carefully maintained.
"It's been a long time to hone human skills, and I'm not too fond of shooting at people, but a lot of times I have to, after all, even a ghoul can die if he gets a bullet in the head."
"Although my knees are a bit miserable with time, and once I crouch down and walk, I make some horrible noises, but to be honest, I can guarantee that I can do it without holding you back and sometimes making some assists within my ability." Andy listened to him and eventually agreed to Otto's joining.
"Alright, Otto, then welcome to my team." Otto looked excited when he heard this.
"Thank you, Boss! Hey, I can call you that, right? I don't know what to call you by your title, and it doesn't seem appropriate to call you Andy, I prefer the title of boss. Andy waved his hand to show that he didn't care, and they walked and talked as they walked and talked as they continued closer to the Atomic Humvee.
"Every time I see you, I want to ask, isn't it uncomfortable for you to stick so many tools in the cracks of your body?"
"Haha, of course not the boss, and no one forced me to do it. In the beginning, I always had to run around with a heavy toolbox, but when it came to repairing things, I realized that I could temporarily plug those gadgets into my body and carry them with me without worrying about forgetting them or taking up my hands. I thought it was a great idea, and I started looking for all the places on my body where I could stuff my tools. Otto shook his head, unzipped his clothes again, revealing his upper body, and many shiny metal tools were inserted or embedded in the cracks between bones and muscles.
"God, I don't even know how to describe you, I think you're just a..." Andy thought for a moment, but suddenly couldn't find the right adjective.
Otto picked up the conversation just in time.
"A living toolbox, huh, boss? Someone has commented on me before, and I think it helps me a lot as a maintenance worker, I can carry out all kinds of maintenance work anytime and anywhere, and I don't need to prepare anything in advance, just arrive at the location of the problem. Before the two came to the Atomic Humvee, Otto was full of praise for the car.
"Oh my God, what a perfect piece of industrial art! Where did you find this gem? Are there any such high-end cars left in the wasteland that look intact? Hi, can you open the hood so I can see the structure inside? I promise I won't break it, I'm just.... I'm just too curious. Andy shrugged and motioned for his own convenience, the car had been upgraded and maintained by the scavengers when it was in Dog City, but it had been driven for a long time now.
Otto joins his team to see if there's anything else to tweak the car, at least compared to the scavengers in Dog City, who is a true professional mechanic.
Just as the two of them were examining and discussing in front of the Atomic Humvee, three people slowly walked behind them, and after waiting for a while, they saw that the two ignored them, and the leader of them finally couldn't help coughing twice.
"Ahem...."Andy slowly turned his head and saw a man in a light brown striped suit and a gentleman's hat, with a black briefcase in the crook of his arm and his eyes obscured by a pair of sunglasses.
There were also two mercenary-looking people standing beside him, and judging from the standing position, you could guess that the two of them were obviously headed by him.
"Who are you? Is there something wrong? Andy turned his body to look directly at the three of them, and the man in sunglasses walked over and shook Andy's hand without hurry.
"When I first met Mr. Andy, my name was Simon, Simon Krieger, and these two were my bodyguards. You should be very curious about who I am, so I'll make a long story short, I'm on the orders of Mayor Dodge as Mr. Andy's business assistant on your trip to Jerichotown, it's definitely not that Mayor Dodge doesn't trust you, it's just.... After all, I have a major in the art industry, and I still have a lot of experience in bargaining and exchanging interests. Andy shook his hand noncommittally, and it seemed that this might be the real representative in fact, and he was just a king-sized thug..... But in any case, the three people in front of him can be regarded as auxiliary personnel sent to him by the Hoover Dam.
The two chatted for a while, agreeing to meet again at a specific departure time, when Simon and Andy would take the train together and finally arrive in Jericho.
Before leaving, Simon glanced at Otto vaguely, frowned, and turned to leave. Over the next two days, Andy and Otto spent the next two days shopping for supplies in Hoover Dam City, and thanks to the special preferential treatment given by the Crimson Caravan, Andy was able to purchase a large number of ammunition at a very cheap price to fill the ammunition needs of the Monty Python and Rhino.
He also bought some healing needles, a new wasteland-style two-headed cowhide coat, a new pair of shoes, a new cowboy hat, and other things like bottled water and canned food, as well as some jerky and fruit from the eastern tribesmen.
There is also a small episode in the middle, after consulting Odysseus, Andy's request to repair the damaged Hermes combat armor and try to upgrade the equipment with the recovered bA stealth armor is granted, but Odysseus also urged Andy to continue to speed up the progress of capturing the fugitives.
It sent a robot to take Andy's equipment and materials, and told him that he would not deliver the upgraded equipment until the next time he successfully captured the fugitive.
After making his preparations, Andy drove across the precarious Hoover Bridge to Hoover Dam Station in the eastern part of the Black Canyon, where he was able to negotiate with the officers stationed there to confirm that his car could be taken with him to the next train car, which was almost exclusively for this mission.
The next morning, at the appointed time, Simon arrived at the station with two bodyguards, one tall and one short, to meet Andy, who was obviously more familiar with the NcR officers here, and had a great time chatting as soon as they met.
A short time later, Simon returned to Andy from the officer.
"Do you know the route this time?" Andy shook his head, and Simon began to speak in a playful tone.
"We'll take the train to the abandoned fortress first, and then from there we will change lines to the north-west railway, which is still under repair, so at most we'll have to stop and turn back about halfway through, and we'll have to take your car for the rest of the way." After chatting for a while, Andy hated this flamboyant guy a little in his heart, but he also believed that such a person had his own merits.
As Simon spoke, seeing that Otto was again obsessed with observing the Atomic Humvee's engine, he walked up to Andy and asked in a low voice.
"You're going to take that ghoul with you?" Andy gave him a strange look, then nodded affirmatively.
"yes, what do you have to say?" Simon's face twitched twice, and he hesitated for a while with a smile on his face, picked up the clipboard in his hand to cover the side of his face, and spoke in a lower voice.
"Oh.... Then you have to be careful, those ghouls may go crazy at any point, their brains will rot completely, and then all that will be left is hunger and madness; I've seen people eat a little bit after being killed by a ghoul, and the hordes of monsters are definitely one of the scariest things in the wasteland, can you trust someone whose brain can change at any time? Andy forcefully stated that he knew something about these things, and told Simon not to continue talking about them, and he laughed dryly twice before turning away.
After Simon had gone far enough, Otto slowly approached.
"Boss, that sunglasses didn't tell you anything good about me, did it?" Andy was a little surprised, after all, Simon's voice was really low just now, and it was impossible to hear what he said if he didn't get very close.
"Did you hear that? Could it be that you ghouls have far better hearing than the average human? Otto shoved a tool back into his body and looked at Simon's back in the distance with a slightly annoyed expression.
"Oh, I know that nasty guy, in fact, there were still a few ghouls living in Hoover Dam City before, thanks to that guy's constant targeted proposals and a lot of inflammatory statements in the city council, those ghouls have had to leave Hoover Dam or hide their true identities completely, and this guy has always been very dissatisfied with my responsibility for maintaining the water purifier in Hoover Dam City."
"It's hard to say what he's going to do to me if he gives him a chance, hey, wouldn't he have instigated those guys who came to me and violently assaulted me for no apparent reason, right?" Andy also looked at Simon when he heard this, it turned out that he was a racist.... After putting the Atomic Humvee on the carriage, Andy noticed that Simon and the three had prepared a car, as if they were not going to share a car with Andy after getting off the train, for obvious reasons, mostly because of Otto.
After getting on the train and entering the carriage, Simon and the three sat far away from a corner table and played cards, except that they tried to stay away from Otto for both eating and sleeping, and their behavior was obvious to them.
Andy couldn't help but complain about it on the road.
"Aren't they going a little too far?" Otto, on the other hand, seemed accustomed to it, ignoring the hostile glances of the three men from time to time, and looked through the few small books he had brought with him, or played with the gadgets he had taken out of his body.
"Oh, it's nothing, I don't care for a long time, as long as they're not aggressive enough to punch them in the face, I'm okay with that." ....................... The next step is a day and a night by train.
On the way, they quickly departed from Hoover Dam Station to the abandoned fortress, where Andy noticed the same scene as before, presumably the members of the Gallows formed by the Hangmen were on joint duty with the NcR soldiers at the station, but looking at the state and number of the two groups, it can be seen that the Gallows Gang members are obviously slightly inferior.
Simon and the three chatted as they ate.
"It's the Hangings, I feel like they're the kind of common marauders, and they were able to run this small settlement built on the ruins on their own before."
"That gang, I don't know how thick the sky is, this was once the territory of the NcR, even if it was later destroyed into ruins, this is still the territory of the NcR, they think they can steal this place forever? Wait and see, if the city of Hoover Dam is restored one day, this important transportation node will be the primary target. The three of them had a lot of discussions, and they all believed that the Hangings were still unwilling to learn after the NcR sent troops back to the abandoned fortress, that is, the former Alashid Fortress, and the residents of Hoover Dam welcomed the king to hand over all the control of the Hanged Corpse City as a kind of mantis arm as a bear, and the reason why they can still maintain the qualification of co-governance on the surface is entirely because the giant bear is too weak now, but this is not destined to last long.
Andy listened to these words in his heart, but there were no fluctuations, the hangman's original behavior had almost broken off the not-so-deep friendship between the two, and now he had no idea how the hangman would develop in the future.
After passing the abandoned fortress, the train turned northeast to northwest, and this direction led to the town of Jericho, near the famous Great Salt Lake, and Andy's impression of this place was still in the mysterious scenes that Kurisu told him when he was with him, and he wondered if the powerful chiefess would ever have a chance to return to her hometown.
Suddenly, on both sides of the railroad ahead, groups of men in blue prison uniforms appeared, and these people looked gloomy, under the supervision of a few armed NcR prison guards, who were carrying out heavy work on the railroad repair.
The inmates who are imprisoned in Black Canyon Prison are often villains who have repeatedly committed serious crimes, and the forced labor camp carried out by the NcR to recruit labor is obviously extremely intensive, which may lead to many incidents.
Just as he was thinking, a prisoner in a blue prison uniform suddenly threw the sleeper in his hand and slammed it on a prison guard's body, knocking him to the ground.
"Get down!" The other two guards raised their military rifles and shouted, but three or four prisoners rushed towards the guards from several directions with hideous faces, and they moved nimbly to the left and right, using other prisoners as meat shields and raising sand to interfere with the prison guards' vision, and in the blink of an eye, they quickly approached the prison guards.
Seeing that this rebellion was about to succeed, more prisoners showed eager expressions on their faces, and only a very small number of prisoners chose to lie down directly with their heads in their hands.
"Bang-bang-bang-" A series of deafening gunshots rang out.
