Chapter 12: In the Water
As soon as these words came out, some of the police officers were unmoved, and some of them obviously showed surprised looks, as if they had only known about the incident.
Sheriff O'Connor motioned for the people around him to carry the body into the house, and then asked Andy and the others to come into the police station to talk.
They stopped in the hall and the bodies were lowered to the ground.
"A real doctor." Hearing the sheriff say this, Alexandra responded indifferently to his compliment.
"I'm not a hell of a doctor, don't call me that, anyone with a modicum of common sense will understand how this so-called treatment came about if they look closely, but you tell me, do you want to say that you have been kept in the dark by that liar for so long?" Sergeant O'Connor was silent for a moment, but then confessed.
"Yes, I've known for a long time, I know that Dr. Wren is a drug dealer who brags about his medical skills all day long, but what can I do? The 'treatment' he provided, though not a real cure, was the fastest way to restore the workers' motivation to work...."Alexandra was full of disdain.
"That's right, isn't it? It takes a while for the real cures to take effect, and some of them can cause drowsiness and weakness, but if you replace these things with something that has an exciting and pain-relieving effect, the sick worker will immediately become alive again, you are really a scumbag! That old lady is not wrong to scold you! Sergeant O'Connor lit a cigarette, looked unmoved, and after a few slow puffs, he looked at Alexandra with a calm look and a look of contempt on her face.
"There is sin in every human being here, and there is never even a single innocent person in the true sense of the word.... The dead man you spoke for, although there is no conclusive evidence and no one to condemn him, according to others, killed at least two Post-Saints during the invasion of New Canaan, and may have been involved in the rape of a woman in turn. His mother did not stop him at all, and later used some of the looting he had made to build a house in Jericho Town, a man who drank heavily every day and often got into conflict with the rest of the town. Even later, knowing that I had revised the new law, he still didn't care at all, and beat a person into a coma in the street, and then I ordered him to be arrested. ”
"His retribution is done, and mine will come one day, I know that." Alexandra was dumbfounded, and Andy looked at her, the usual ruthless woman showing more and more emotion after arriving in Jericho, probably because it was her old home that made it difficult for her heart to calm down for a moment.
Andy didn't care to comfort Alexandra, who was a little lost for a while, he had something more important to say.
"Listen, what I'm going to say is true, there is a virulent infectious disease that is already spreading in the town, and it won't be long before it will cause serious consequences, and many people will die at the hands of the virus." Sergeant O'Connor raised an eyebrow and listened intently to Andy.
"You've all seen the blue blisters, which grow on all infected people, so it's also commonly known as blue sickness in the wasteland, and some people don't react much, but they still become carriers of the virus. Once infected, most people's condition will deteriorate irreversibly within a week to half a month, the patient will have a high fever and difficulty breathing, and finally the whole body will be covered with blisters and burst one by one to become a new source of the virus, infecting more people. The two policemen with blue blisters were stunned in fright, and the others retreated and covered their mouths and noses.
Sheriff O'Connor's eyes rolled, and after a brief moment of panic, he came back to his senses, first reassuring the two frightened cops from doing irrational things under their emotional impulses, and then asking Andy if there was a cure for the so-called blue disease.
"There is.... And I have a way to get the whole town out of this crisis. Andy pulls out a green fruit.
"Just using it can cure the disease completely, and it won't happen again." One policeman looked suspicious, and the other reached for it, and Andy slapped it away.
"We have to make good use of this precious thing, do you have any farmland here?" Sheriff O'Connor stretched out his arm and pointed to the west of town.
"On the westernmost outskirts of Jericho town is our field, but it's a paddy field. We put the water pumped out of the well into it, and on the shore of the Great Salt Lake grows a kind of blade valley adapted to salt water, and we make bread from the flour that is ground from the blade grain. Andy thought for a moment before making a request to Sheriff O'Connor.
"You have to plough a real field and water it with clean water, and the fruit will sprout and bear fruit soon after planting, and it will not be long before you will get enough of it. It's too slow and inefficient to distribute, and when the quantity is enough, you have to mash the fruit and mix it into the water storage tank of the water plant, so that the ingredients in it can be mixed into the water, so that everyone will be free of the threat of the virus. Sheriff O'Connor took the fruit cautiously, assuring Jericho that the town would do as Andy had told.
Alexandra frowned a little skeptically, but she didn't say anything right away.
"Thank you Andy, you've done so much for our town, and I can't say enough if I don't let you get the drawings now, and in a moment Deputy Sheriff Colville will take you to the lower level of the waterworks. When we looked at it before, we found that there was a room over there with a terminal lit, and if we had to say where there would be the electronic drawings you mentioned, it would be there. ”...................... Walking on the way to the waterworks again, Alexandra finally couldn't hold back the doubts in her heart.
"Do those green fruits of yours really work?" Andy nodded as a matter of course.
"That's natural, I've tried it many times, and the origin of this thing is quite not simple, and you won't believe it when you say it." Alexandra sighed, feeling that it had been going wrong since she came back here, and whether this thing worked or not was none of her business.
"I hope you're not lying, I've had the disease of having blue blisters on my body before, but at that time, a friend gave me a native, which is said to have been handed down by a goddess, and after taking it, I was really better...."Andy smiled and said nothing, it seems that the efforts made in Ouroboros Village were not in vain, so empty land and many scattered native tribes, only Ouroboros Village has the ability to unite the tribes and spread the fruit of hope, so that those tribes will not be infected by the new plague virus and suffer heavy casualties.
Several people re-entered the Jericho Town's waterworks, where Colville continued to supervise the workers.
He walked over after seeing Andy, and after learning of Sheriff O'Connor's arrangement, he readily agreed to lead them down to the lower level to find the terminal.
Walking down a staircase to the basement level of the water plant, Andy and the others saw that the water here was no longer the level of the puddle above, but almost knee-high.
"This...."Otto looked left and right, there were also some workers in the underground level, mainly those who had been bought slave ghouls, but also some human workers, and it was obvious that the working conditions here were even worse than those above.
A large hand-pressed water pump is in front of it, this equipment is not very well matched, it looks like it was later modified, and the workers are laboriously driving it, and the salt water of the large salt lake pumped out of the ground flows into the pipes, and then flows to the machine for desalination.
"Haven't you tried draining?"
"Oh, we don't know how to drain the water, after all, we can't find the well, and it's been leaking all the time, so we have to ask the workers to send some of the stagnant water out with buckets on a regular basis, but it won't be long before everything is back to the same state." Otto sighed and shook his head.
"No, there is definitely a drainage system here, and the designer couldn't have thought about it if there was a leak on it or something wrong with the well." At this moment, a man dressed in the blue clothes of a worker came with water, his hair was very peculiar, as if he had been rolled up a little bit with a lot of small instruments of unknown purpose as hairpins, and his complexion was dark.
Andy's gaze was certainly drawn to him, and then he saw that in the collar that the man pulled open, there seemed to be a special tattoo on the skin on his chest, which looked like two numbers.
Cauville saw him and greeted him.
"Battery! How did you get down here? I've told you, if you really don't want to keep going, get out of here as soon as possible! The young man known as the battery looked up and looked at the look of his face and some of the unique painted patterns on it, and Andy knew that it should be a tribe people, commonly known as natives.
"I know, I'll be gone soon, and this place doesn't interest me anymore." Battery looked curiously at the others, especially Otto.
"Oh.... You, you stuffed all those tools into your body, didn't it feel bad? Are you also a person who likes to study mechanical things? You see, I also have a lot of gadgets in my hair. He spoke a lingua franca with an accent, and Andy knew where he was coming from.
Otto pulled out a wrench from under his collarbone, and the process looked tooth-sore.
"Of course not, these things are as comfortable and beautiful to me as manicure or dentures, and they are practical, you can understand, right? It's much more convenient than carrying around a toolbox, and you'll never have to rummage through the box and find that you're missing a tool. Andy also learned that it was the battery that helped the equipment in the water plant to do the initial maintenance, and he came here to be the only volunteer worker for a reason, he was here to see the inner workings of all the pre-war machinery and equipment in the plant, and in the process to confirm what he had learned.
Otto was very surprised, the native in front of him actually had a considerable degree of technical attainment, which can be said to be rare in most tribes whose pre-war cultural inheritance was almost completely cut off, and it did not conform to the stereotype of ordinary people for natives.
Andy listened for a moment and found an empty interjection.
"Battery, I guess you're from the crypto tribe, right?" Now it was the young native's turn to be surprised.
“.... How do you know? Andy recounts to him how he arrived at the Crypto Tribe and met the leader Azki, showing him his digital tattoo
“13”。 Battery was even more surprised, and then he enthusiastically hugged Andy and called him brother, looking very happy.
After following the battery's instructions, several people came to a hidden cubicle, and the battery guessed that it was probably the drain valve, but he didn't do anything because he was about to leave recently.
Andy and Calwell grabbed the valve and turned it vigorously, almost using all the strength to feed, and Colville was surprised to see that the part of the valve that Andy was holding was actually deformed by him, and the almost completely rusted machinery was finally successfully turned.
With the rumbling sound coming from everywhere, the water level of the stagnant water is rapidly decreasing. The workers were amazed at this, and as the water receded, the ground, which had not seen the light of day, was exposed to the air, and it was not long before they heard a burst of exclamation from somewhere.
Andy ran out of the narrow cubicle and saw the workers running towards the exit with panicked faces, Calville shouted to stop, and even pulled out his gun to fire a warning shot, and with the help of the other police officers who ran down, the panicked people finally stopped.
"What's going on? It's just that we're draining! Cauleville asked loudly, but most of the workers just looked at the others in confusion, and most of them seemed to be unable to understand why they were running, but they heard someone screaming and saw the water falling rapidly at the same time, thinking that something terrible had happened, so they began to flee in confusion.
After repeated questioning, the screaming man was finally found.
"When the water level went down, I saw a basement entrance-like place peeking out, and then I saw a lot of big yellowish translucent worms burrowing into it." He swore that and pulled out a few people to pull open his trouser legs.
"It must be those guys who are secretly biting, we saw this kind of mark on our bodies at some point when we left the lower level, something bit us." Calwell shouted at them not to continue their nonsense, and then informed all the workers in the lower area to go up to work first today, because the lower area had to carry out equipment maintenance, and the workers were somewhat unconvinced, but finally lined up and left the lower area without saying a word under the threat of gunpoint.
Alexandra showed that she was very concerned about what the worker said, and she shared her opinion with Andy.
"If what that guy said is true, the marks on the dead man have an explanation, I see signs of radiation poisoning and bite marks similar to the others, if this is from some kind of mutant creature that has been lurking here for a long time, they are the source of those strange diseases." Andy nodded, and then he suddenly had a flash of inspiration, and suddenly figured out what the bite mark was made of.
"I know what those monsters are, I've cleaned them up before, right here at Hoover Dam."
