Chapter 19: The Chapel Camp

The barren wasteland flew by in front of you. Strange rocks with red colors are scattered everywhere, and the more you move in the direction of your destination, the more you will usher in the yellow sand.

It just feels hot..... Andy drove the car and grunted a bottle of water, relying on his contribution in Jericho Town, where he had access to water at his disposal, and now he could say that there was no shortage of water to drink, and both the Pip-Boy and the Atomic Hummer had a large number of them.

"I'm not wrong, am I?" He asked the woman sitting in the co-pilot, Alexandra, who was a mercenary he hired temporarily for this trip, but I have to say that this bottle cap flower can be said to be a great value, who would have thought that she was born and raised in New Canaan.

"That's right, if you continue to walk in this direction, you will probably be able to find the gathering place of the followers of the Later Holy Order, and the direction chosen by those who lost their homes after the destruction of New Canaan is of course the direction where the ancient ancestral land was located.... Salt Lake City. Alexandra was still a little silent along the way, and it was really not that simple for her to face it all again.

"Ancestral land, you say? What's the point for this? Andy drove the car and felt like he was going to fall asleep if he didn't talk any more, and the environment around him became more and more empty and worse, and it was foreseeable that there would be a big desert ahead.

Alexandra leaned back in her chair with her arms folded and didn't speak, and just when Andy thought she wouldn't answer the question, she suddenly spoke again.

"When the second prophet of the Latter Church came to this place in 1847, the conditions were as bad as we see before our eyes. But my ancestors had a hard-working and indomitable spiritual will, and they worked hard to pioneer here, day after day, year after year... Finally, in this hot and dry land, a paradise that belongs exclusively to the followers of the Post-Saint Church has been established, that is, Salt Lake City. She put a hand to her mouth, remembered for a moment, and then added.

"In our scriptures, on July 24 of that year, the second prophet took everyone to a valley in the desert, and four days later the second prophet said, 'This is where we are looking,' and the city has been rooted ever since." Andy thought the stories sounded interesting, and he raised his arm to glance at the Pip-Boy, and saw that according to the map above, his destination seemed to be a little different from the valley area mentioned by Alexandra.

"Are you sure we're not wrong? I always felt like we weren't going straight to Salt Lake City, right? Alexandra took off her hat and threw it at her feet, her pale face flushed slightly from the heat.

"Not really going to Salt Lake City... It's completely finished, the bombs that fell during the Great War have completely destroyed it, and no one is going to live there, and now it's going to that shelter in the desert outside Salt Lake City. For the rest of the day, the sun's rays became more and more unbearable, tormenting Andy's nerves.

In the heat of the afternoon, Alexandra finally said that they had arrived at their destination. In fact, frankly, there was no need for her to announce this, and Andy knew that this was the end, after all, a large spire building standing in the middle of the desert really couldn't be noticed.

The building is elegant and imposing, with four pillars forming a tower-shaped gate, and there seems to be a sculpture standing on top of it, but it has been destroyed.

This is most likely due to the aftermath of the atomic bombing that hit Salt Lake City, and in line with other signs of destruction of the building, the sculpture has only a pedestal left, and what the past has become a mystery.

But there is no doubt that this is clearly a church. One of the walls of the church had collapsed in half, causing the interior of the building to be seen from the outside, with rows of decaying benches on which men in gray or white robes sat upright, facing the huge cross in front of them, bowing their heads with their hands folded and muttering words in their mouths.

"Please show us the way.... For your words of wisdom..."Vague words wafted out of the church, melted in the wind and sand, and dissipated in the ears.

Andy and Alexandra had already gotten out of the car, and the tattered coarse cloth tents were scattered all over the place, and it seemed that these were the houses of the post-Saints who lived here, and they could only be described as pitiful against the backdrop of the harsh surroundings; If you look at the sluggish vegetable patch not far away, and see a small and simple well next to it, I believe this scene may be tragic enough.

Alexandra looked up and sighed, the glorious scenes of New Canaan's past were still vivid in her mind, and now such contrasting scenes rushed into her field of vision, making her clench her fists.

"Have they lived in this place for seven years?" Andy was in disbelief, how could the crops grown in these barren fields feed those people?

"Didn't you see it all.... Survive, these people..."Alexandra stared at the devout believers in the church, the expression on her face seemed to be a little reluctant to look directly, but as if she was forcing herself to look.

While they were looking around, the post-consecrated members of the church were still performing strange rituals there.

Andy looked at it for a moment, then turned to look at Alexandra.

"What are they doing?"

"Pray."

"What is prayer?"

"Tell yourself about your confusion and distress, hoping that Heavenly Father will save you or give you guidance."

"Does this really work?"

"Don't come and ask me, when I left New Canaan, I swore never to pray to any being again." As the two men spoke, the post-congregations in the church suddenly began to recite their prayers in unison, and though there were men and women, old and young, each one did his best, and every syllable seemed to be imbued with the most devout faith.

"I will do my best, I will do my best, I will do my best, I will do my best, I will do my best, I will do everything, I will do everything..."

"I will do my best, I will do my best, I will do my best, I will do my best, I will do my best, I will do everything I can..."

"I will do my best, I will be everywhere! I will do my best, I would like to go anywhere!! I will do my best, I will go anywhere...!! The post-congregation believer standing on the front pulpit suddenly stretched out his hands to the sky, his face flushed, and he shouted excitedly.

"I feel it! O Lord! My soul is burning, it is the guidance of the Lord, I am willing to accept your will, Lord!! Heavenly Father!! Andy was taken aback by the almost madness of the scene, and he looked back and forth, left and right, but did not see anything out of the ordinary.

"Did I miss any important sacred moments?" Alexandra sighed heavily and shook her head.

"You didn't miss anything.... Ha..... He was probably just too emotional and hallucinating. The gray-blue eyes swept over the entire camp that had been built near the church, and she was keenly aware that something was wrong, some of the wooden shelves next to the tents were tied with white-gray lizard skins with ropes, things that were definitely not something that could be obtained by yelling at unknown beings all day long.

It's clear that there's a bunch of people who should have been here aren't here now.

"Is it by lifting their spirits like this that they can endure such a difficult environment for several years?" Andy saw this kind of big scene for the first time, and although he couldn't understand it, he felt shocked.

Alexandra saw that the believer who had begun to preach from a state of excitement was making an impassioned speech, but by chance he raised his head and noticed two outsiders standing behind the believers who were watching everything in the distance, and the man suddenly exclaimed, and the crowd who had been sitting in their chairs and listening looked back at the two of them, and then they all panicked.

They squeezed towards the center of the church while gesturing with religious gestures and howling wolves, and some of them took out knives for self-defense and homemade iron guns, but they were generally poorly made and rusty, and were more like some kind of self-comfort than threatening weapons, and now under the cross, I don't know whose operation had opened a door, and behind the door it looked like an elevator car.

The After-Saints swarmed in, and the two shivering men with scum weapons also fled in at the last moment, and the elevator doors immediately closed and the outer protective layer also closed.

In the blink of an eye, the church became empty.

"This ..... What's going on? Alexandra also felt very surprised, she thought about what to do after meeting with the followers of the Post-Holy Order, although she has been away from New Canaan for many years and is no longer a follower of the Post-Holy Order, but there will always be a few people who know her, or at least can go up to resolve the hostile misunderstanding, who would have thought that when the real meeting, the choice made by the people of New Canaan is to hide as quickly as possible.

She stared at the closed elevator door, which looked like nothing more than a wall when closed.

"I was born in New Canaan, but it's my first time here, and I guess that elevator is the entrance to the shelter, the one where my ancestors used to hide from bombs underground." Andy looked outside at the tents that were crumbling from the wind and sand.

"In that case, why don't they just go down to the shelter and live there? It's better than being outside, right? Alexandra pondered for a moment, making a guess.

"I don't know exactly, but there must be some reason below that it has become uninhabitable, and can only be used to temporarily hide from the danger outside, otherwise they would not have been able to set up a tent outside." The two walked into the empty church, which was almost empty except for a few incomplete post-congregation scriptures, and they walked to the bottom of the huge cross, where the elevator doors were closed tightly, and they didn't know where to find the control switch to turn the elevator on again.

Nearby, though, they found a voice call answering machine. Shortly after pressing the button, a faint voice came from inside.

"Who are you?" Andy leans over and tries to convince them to believe in himself.

"Don't be afraid! We're not marauders or other bad guys, we're here to find out something about you, can you talk to me? The weak voice clearly showed that there was no chatter about Yaxing.

"It doesn't matter who you are or not, leave us alone, get out of here, we don't believe you, and we won't allow you to come down; We'll go out when you leave here, we didn't mess with anyone or do anything related to you, there are no bottle-caps worth anything in this camp and nothing you want to snatch.... Anyway, get out of here! After that, the other side hung up the voice contact, and Andy and Alexandra stared at each other in embarrassment.

After trying to contact again to no avail, they stood in the empty church for a moment, not knowing what to do next.

Alexandra was silent for a while, then she suddenly became angry again, her gray-blue eyes staring at the sacred symbol in front of her, and the anger in her heart could not be contained.

"It's all because of those rotten lies.... Was it stupid and naïve before, but now it has even degenerated to the point of cowardice and cowardice? What's going on in your heads? Andy didn't know how to comfort her, presumably the scene in front of her was very different from what she imagined, and he had no choice but to let Alexandra be quiet first, but when he turned around, he saw several black dots coming from the desert in the distance.

As they got closer, they must have noticed two strangers standing in the church, and then sped up, and soon came into Andy's sight, they were also dressed in white or gray robes similar to those of the Post-Saints, but many of them were also wearing battle armor that they had found out of nowhere, armed with pistols, shotguns, shotguns, and other weapons.

The leader came to stand not far in front of Andy and the two, under his white robe was a somewhat dirty white shirt, under the body was a pair of jeans, a short brown hair left on the top of the head, the emaciated rectangular face was full of vicissitudes, although this fair-skinned man may be in his thirties, but the twilight between the eyebrows and eyes made people unable to take it lightly.

At this moment, he was carrying an assault rifle in his hand and looked at the two people in front of him vigilantly.

"Who are you? What do you want to do here? If you're just a weary traveler passing by, feel free to rest in our humble camp, but other than that... You'd better not cause any trouble here, we don't welcome any troublemakers. Andy raised his hand to show that he had no ill intentions, but before he could speak, Alexandra next to him suddenly spoke.

"You are.... Rigdon? The man in front of him immediately turned his gaze to the woman he hadn't paid much attention to, and after a moment of staring, he pronounced her name.

"Alexandra, is that you?"
