Chapter XXXVII: The Fate of War
In the west of the valley floor of the Grand Canyon, the three of Pierce were colliding with Andy, and since they were ordered by General Colazinge to hand over to Dr. Prester, they rushed to the Grand Canyon non-stop, and took advantage of the confusion of Podunke to enter the mine and go down the Grand Canyon, successfully found .m.b-002 and obtained its black box, and when they finally finished everything and met Andy on the way back.
"Stopping you?"
Andy looked at the three people in front of him suspiciously, through the helmet of power armor.
"I don't even know what you're here for, the new plague virus you've spread is no longer unsolvable, it can no longer threaten the world, I'm honest with you, now that the NcR has returned to the Eastern Special District, and then when they find out about these things, you will definitely be wanted and hunted down, don't you understand?"
Pierce chuckled at first, then faded into laughter.
"You don't understand anything... You don't know anything about our plans... I'll be honest with you, prisoner, what you, the great hero of the wasteland, have done along the way, and it's actually under our control. I gotta say, I admire your ability and character, you could have been a freewheeling outlaw, but you didn't. However, that doesn't stop us from killing you, because Dr. Prester has given the order, you're already wanted, and as a guy who has repeatedly hindered the implementation of our plans, you won't get out of here alive today. β
Andy frowned, only feeling inexplicable.
"Under control? Why do you think you have control over my whereabouts? β
Pierce lifted a finger and pointed to the sky.
"There are people outside the world, you think you are free and do what you want, but in fact, in the eyes of the masters, you have no secrets at all... The reason why no one does anything to you is simply because you don't matter. Ever since you left Tibbetts Prison as an escaped prisoner, my employer has been watching you and your ilk... You should have fulfilled your destiny as pawns in this great plan, but you, you always try to get rid of it and make everything go your way, much to Dr. Prester's displeasure. β
Andy subconsciously glanced at the top of the Grand Canyon, and couldn't see the sky clearly in a daze.
Does Prest have the means to spy on the entire Eastern District and even the entire Great Southwestern Federation? Can he really do it to this extent?
"Pierce, I met one of you in Dog City, too, and he kept saying that it was for the New World, so is that some great plan you are working on?"
Pierce was silent for a moment, as if thinking about something.
"I know who you're talking about, no wonder he didn't come back, those wild dogs couldn't kill him, it turned out to be you... Hmph, are you interested in this great project? For the sake of your contribution and the fact that you are about to become a dead man today, it doesn't hurt to tell you that Dr. Prester will completely erase all the mistakes made by the NcR, and then gradually reshape the whole world to the way it should have been since the outbreak of the Great War, and the NcR who messed up all this will be gone! β
Andy was shocked and made NcR disappear?
"What the hell are you going to do? Why are you so hostile to NcR? β
Pierce seemed impatient and was about to raise his weapon, when a man standing next to Pierce suddenly stopped him.
"You still seem to have unrealistic illusions about NcR, and I used to be like you, but that's wrong."
A thick voice rang out from the silvery-white bloated high-temperature, high-radiation protective suits they were wearing.
Andy looked at him, unable to see any of the man's features because of the armor.
"What do you say? Without NcR, we might still have a group of Buraku people living in New California. β
The man sneered.
"Without NcR, we wouldn't lose what we have, the truth is the other way around, NcR has been taking advantage of us to keep it alive for it to splurge, this country has now become a tool for a bunch of rentiers to satisfy their greedy desires, a giant bear that goes crazy to the east, why are you and I in this hellish place today, why are there a group of people being thrown from New California to Colorara's Dog City? You might say it's our own choice, really? If you think about it, you will find that we were forced to be coerced here, and it is the NcR that persecuted us, it is no longer the motherland for which we have given everything, it is now a cancer in a wasteland! If it is allowed to continue like this, it will be a disaster! β
Andy shook his head repeatedly.
"I also admit that NcR has done a lot of bad things and that the situation inside it is complicated right now, but your opinion is too extreme. There are many things that can only be done by the power of the state, and these things will ultimately benefit everyone, and it would be a mistake to deny the legitimacy of its existence, and, if you do destroy the NcR, can you do better? What can you do? β
"A lot of bad things?"
The man's voice was a little agitated.
"Andy Arendall, my name is Robert, Robert Briggs, a former soldier in the 5th Engineering Company of the NcR, do you have any impression in your head when you hear the name of my unit?"
Andy was stunned, the Fifth Engineering Company? It wasn't a battle with marauders in a mine that eventually led to a big explosion...
"You're... So you witnessed the destruction of Burnham Springs at that time? β
Rob nodded.
"Exactly, the 5th Engineering Company was ordered to go to Burnham Springs to hunt down the Explosives Gang, a gang of marauders who had blown up the officers, and they were vilely hiding in mines full of flammable ores, and we knew that a rash attack could lead to unpredictable consequences, but those NST bastards kept putting pressure on us, as if it seemed to them that catching these people was as easy as catching a few fish."
"As a result, everything was destroyed, it became hell, and I can't even describe the miserable appearance in words, the charred corpses and the smell of wafting meat.... God, after all these years, I still have nightmares. β
Robert clenched his fists.
"It's not the first time something like this has happened! As long as NcR exists, this will continue to happen! Over and over! Those incompetent bureaucrats and corrupt politicians, obviously their stupidity, always pay for other people's lives! If you have the chance to visit Burnham Springs, you will know that this is definitely not a tragedy that can be described as 'a lot of bad things'! β
Andy looked at Robert speechlessly, this is the second survivor of the Fifth Engineering Company he has met, the first is Diane from Hoover Dam City, she suffered from severe stress traumatic sequelae because of that incident, she doesn't like to socialize with others and can't see burnt meat, this Robert is in a better state than Diane, but the anger and resentment towards NcR in his heart finally prompted him to join a group of terrorists.
"I know what you're talking about... Mayor Dodge had been feeling very guilty, and he said that he shouldn't have been so anxious to push the colonel, but it was at this point, everything was irreparable, and we just needed to learn our lesson. β
Robert shook his head, unimpressed by Andy's statement.
"Joseph Dodge is a fool, yes, but the main reason for that incident is not him, we all hated the same enemy, hoping to take revenge on those thugs on behalf of the Republic, but when we got there, we found out that all the information was wrong, and the information provided by the National Anti-Terrorism Agency was so wrong that we finally lost the opportunity to let the guys escape into the mine, they didn't hide that it was their warehouse where they stored explosives, and they even told us bluntly that once this place was blown up, the whole Burnham Springs would be buried for them."
"The NCA agents who came with us wanted to cover up some of their mistakes, used explosives without permission, and wanted to blow up the mine to silence the marauders forever, and it was because of these bastards that everything happened, and the colonel was killed by them."
Andy first heard the version of the story from those who witnessed it, and he couldn't believe it.
"Really? Are those guys crazy? β
Without waiting for Robert to respond, the third man muttered impatiently.
"Is it okay to stop your nagging? Are we going to stand here and talk all the time? I tell you, and I don't care what you think, I have only one loyalty in my heart to General Colezinge, and since he ordered me to obey Dr. Prester's orders, then I obey, and Dr. Prester ordered to kill Andy Arendall, and here he is now. β
He moved his neck a few times before walking towards Andy.
Pierce glanced at him dissatisfied.
"Davidson! General Kollezinji himself said, I am the leader of this operation, what do you want to do without my order? Give me back! β
The man paused, glanced back at Pierce, and finally backed away.
"Yes, Captain Pierce, but I'll keep an eye on you."
Pierce withdrew his gaze, and Robert was so disturbed that he couldn't continue, and the situation once again became a confrontation between the two sides.
Andy looked at Pierce, who was clearly the key.
"I can understand you a little, but to destroy the NcR and even the whole world to recreate an ideal new world? I don't know how you're going to do this other than spreading the virus, and now I only have one guess, but are you willing to do such nonsense? I haven't met your General Kolzenji, so I don't know what he thinks, but why can't you use your brains to think about the feasibility of this for yourself? If you had thought about it, you would have thoughts, and you don't know what Prester usually thinks of you. β
Pierce was silent for a moment, seemingly a little shaken.
"What do you mean?"
Andy vaguely feels that everything so far has actually been connected.
"You spread the new plague in order to get Tibbetts Prison to initiate the prisoner containment procedures, and then your attack on Tibbetts Prison that led to the Great Escape was to activate Odysseus's emergency runaway containment mechanism, which will cause it to initiate the final procedure after all prisoners return to prison and it is confirmed that the virus is spreading too widely, Send a signal to .m.b-001 to bomb all the affected areas to end the spread of the new plague, but this seems to have been stopped by Prester himself, I don't know what he was going to do, but since you said your plan was to destroy the NcR and the whole world and rebuild everything, then I guess it must have something to do with those nuclear bombs. β
"If he did, where would you be then?"
Pierce smiled and shook his head.
"I thought you were going to say something, huhβanyway, when the time comes, you'll be all destroyed with this rotten world, and we won't, which may be more than you think, but that's what it is; We will be the pioneers of a new world, stepping on the ashes of your corpses to rebuild everything, that beautiful new world, and it is a shame that you have not been able to see it with your own eyes. β
Andy's mind suddenly turned to the freezers he had seen in the Great Dome, and he knew immediately how to respond.
"No, sooner or later you will be abandoned, and after you have completely lost your usefulness to Prester, death will be released by him over your heads.... Do you think you are the chosen ones? You're wrong, there's no place for you in that new world in Prerest's heart! β
Pierce raised the rifle in his hand, but slowly lowered it again.
"Why do you say that? You're not him! β
Andy figured it out and calmly explained it to him.
"I said so, Pierce, think about it. Dr. Prester is a scientist, but what about you? Will you, like your General Kolzenji, be a bunch of soldiers, and you will be a violent, unpredictable and uncivilized people in his eyes? If he had a choice, would he keep you with him all the time? I'll tell you who he likes, and that's the new California scientists who are just as intellectual, rational and scientific as he is. β
"Do you know where they are? Lying in the freezer of the Great Dome, where it would not be destroyed by a nuclear bomb, when Prester completed his plan, he would awaken the people he had worked so hard to gather, and they would be the inhabitants of the New World he wanted, not you. What does he do once he gets everything he wants? He's going to kill you like he's asking you to kill me! β
Pierce fell silent, and Robert and Davidson, who were next to him, seemed to be touched by Andy's words.
Andy waited for a moment and held out a hand.
"If you understand, give up these unrealistic fantasies and go back to New California and start a new life. Pierce, you may still have a chance to redeem Helen and your children; Robert, what happened in Burnham Springs is irreparable, and we can work together to reveal those past secrets to Mayor Dodger; Davidson, you said you were only loyal to your General Kollezinji, not to Prester, right? β
The three of them looked at each other a few times, thinking differently.
Pierce opened his mouth suddenly.
"Don't mention Helen's bitch to me... What you say may have some truth, but this matter is still for General Kolzenji to judge, don't think that you can play us like monkeys with just a few words! ... If Prester really thinks as you say, I'll get rid of him myself when the time comes, and let's just don't see each other today, and it won't be the same next time! β
Davidson followed suit.
"That's right! Only the judgment of General Kollezinji can be convinced! ... You're in luck with the guys who would have died today, get out of here! β
Andy glanced at the Davidson, he always felt that he was not very smart, but he didn't bother to deal with this impudent fellow, since the three of them had been shaken, this vacillation might be passed on to General Kohezinji, according to the brigadier general, this former general had been dismissed by the NcR, but he was still influential in the army, and it would be best if he could divide him and Prester.
The two walked past Andy, and Robert suddenly handed him a key as he passed by him.
"Here's for you."
Andy took the key and looked at it twice, it was an ordinary key.
"What is this? What can it be used to turn it on? β
Robert looked at the key meaningfully.
"I didn't think this thing would come in handy again, but since you said you wanted the truth to be made public, it would be better to leave it to you, I don't have any hope for NcR anymore. The Colonel had left behind some materials before his suicide, in the safe of his office in Burnham Springs, which had now been reduced to rubble with the explosion, and it was likely that there were things related to the National Anti-Terrorism Agency, and if you had the chance to go there, you could try to find them, but don't get too much hope to find them. β
Andy solemnly put the key away.
"Thank you, Robert."
Robert shook his head, looking relieved.
"Maybe I should thank you instead, this is my last obsession... Goodbye, we may be enemies next time we meet. β
