Chapter 32: The Silence of Burnham Springs

The Atomic Hummer spun around a boulder, and on one side of the stone there was an old pre-war vehicle still batting into it, apparently with an unlucky driver driving in 2077.

"Where are you going next?" Chrissy looked out with some curiosity.

"Burnham Springs... You've heard the name here, right? Andy narrowed his eyes, feeling that there seemed to be some familiar figure in front of him.

"There, but a lot of people are sad, but what are you doing there? It was just a burning ruin, and I had to find my face towel and goggles. Andy heard her say this, looked down at the map of the Pip-Boy, and after confirming the location, he was thoughtful.

"I think... You probably don't have to look for that. The car slowly stopped, Andy pushed the door and got out of the car to look northwest, but at this distance, he still couldn't see the black plume of smoke rising from the ruins of Burnham Springs, which was definitely not normal.

Chrissy also got out of the car with a puzzled expression, and was about to ask Andy what he meant by what he just said, when suddenly she raised a palm to cover her eyes and looked at it carefully for a while, and then took out a pair of binoculars.

"Those are... Soldiers of the NcR? What are they doing here? Andy sighed, and his heart was exactly as he expected.

"What else can I do here, look for coal, isn't that what the brigadier general asked Major Fleming to do in the first place? There are few well-known coal producing areas in the entire Great Southwestern Federation, and the Grand Canyon has always been an unsuitable place for human activities, so only Burnham Springs remains, which used to flourish because of coal mining, right? Chrissy frowned and looked at Andy, as if she didn't agree with his guess.

"But... The mines in Burnham Springs have been blown up for years, and where is there any coal? Andy shook his head.

"You don't know... Things may not be as bad as they used to be, and besides, do you think Major Fleming has a better option? Even just finding some remnants of slag can be a good result. The two of them immediately walked in the direction of Burnham Spring, the dust piling up on the ground as they went, but the air was not so bad, and it was no longer the horrible scene of ashes falling like rain before.

Andy slowly stopped, and saw a small improvised camp with a two-headed bear flag raised inside.

Next to that small camp, several people were arguing. On one side, there are several merchants, carrying large bags and small bags leading two-headed oxen, which are also full of large cargo boxes.

What is more striking is their clothes, all plain robes... On the other side, of course, there was a group of NcR soldiers, and the excited green beret officer at the head knew at a glance that it was Major Fleming.

"You can't do that!" The merchant shouted.

"You've been giving up here for so many years, why did you come here to pick the fruit just after a little bit of improvement?" Major Fleming nudged him irritably.

"What are you talking about? This has always been the inherent territory of the NcR, so what's the matter with your New Canaan? Get out of the way! Andy reckoned that Major Fleming still didn't know anything about what was happening at the Hoover Dam, so he walked straight over.

"What's going on?" The New Canaanite merchant looked back and saw that two more NcR people were about to have a seizure, but suddenly noticed Andy, rubbed his eyes, and made sure for a while before he hesitated to speak.

"You're Andy?" Major Fleming also looked at it, with the same expression on his face.

"You... You seem to have changed a bit, wait, how do you know him? The New Canaanite merchant didn't bother to respond to Major Fleming, and he ran straight to Andy's side.

"Judge us quickly, these robbers, we just built a rest stop, and they haven't come for a few days, and they have taken over it in a blink of an eye!" Major Fleming looked embarrassed.

"My people have walked a long way and need to rest, and they happen to see...", the New Canaanite merchant took a sip directly.

"Nonsense! You're even building fortifications in the camp, and you can tell at a glance that you want to take it for yourself, do you still want to regain control of Burnham Springs? Just because you found out that the fire there has been extinguished! Major Fleming coughed.

"We didn't know what was going on here, we just came here to try to find some coal...", the New Canaanite merchant spoke more and more directly because of Andy's support.

"You liar, where did you get so many coincidences? And even then, why do you want to stay here all the time, if you buy some coal from the bottle caps? And you say you don't covet it? Major Fleming endured and endured, and finally couldn't bear it.

"Sergeant Andy, you also know that Burnham Springs has always been the territory of the NcR, and this place was completely built by the NcR, so all the assets and resources in the area naturally belong to the NcR, whether it is this camp or the minerals in it, we also have the power to decide who can stay here and who can't, the charter signed by the mayor of Dodge and issued to Burnham is still in good condition, this is not fake." The New Canaanite merchant glanced back at Andy in confusion, and his eyes began to waver a little.

Andy tapped him on the shoulder, then looked up to talk to Major Fleming to calm him down for the time being.

"Long time no see, Major Fleming, I'll have something to say to you in a moment, so let me speak alone with this merchant for a while." Major Fleming glanced at Andy, then at Chrissy next to him.

"Okay, but... You should also come and talk to me about Corporal Christina, why are you here? Chrissy twisted her face.

"I'm afraid it's not your turn, Major Fleming, I'm on a temporary mission." Major Fleming beckoned to her.

"Come here, let's talk to the two soldiers." Chrissy shrugged, and the two stepped aside to talk.

After the two walked away, Andy spoke.

"What's going on here? You say the fire in Burnham Springs has been extinguished? Since when? The New Canaanite merchant immediately spoke anxiously about what he knew.

"Since Luke made an agreement with the scavengers in Burnham Springs, we have been passing through this place and making deals with them by the way, but about a week ago, I don't know what happened to the poisonous smoke in Burnham Springs suddenly decreased, we went into Burnham Springs to check with those scavengers, and they said that the fire in the underground mine has been extinguished, and the environment in Burnham Springs is returning to normal, and there is no more heat and poisonous gas, which should be a good thing, but those robbers are like flies that smell blood..." He turned his head to look in the direction of Major Fleming.

"It's shameless! Isn't there anyone who doesn't know why it caught fire in the first place? Andy looked at the merchant and figured that he must have been a Jericho in the past, and had recently been baptized, for not only did he not speak those scripture excerpts, but he also had the slightest bit of peace in mind with the New Canaanites.

"Don't worry... This matter can be resolved peacefully. The New Canaanite merchant shook his head stubbornly.

"We don't believe it, anyway, the people of Burnham Springs have already contacted us, this is a very important node for our trade routes to the south, and the NcR has been supporting the Crimson Caravan to carry out unfair competition with us, whether it is from the perspective of helping the weak or from the perspective of interests, this place can no longer be controlled by the NcR!" Andy felt a little speechless, and the merchant was telling some big truths.

"But they have guns after all, so don't get into a conflict with them easily." The merchant looked confident.

"New Canaan is not the New Canaan of the past, now we have a very powerful armed team, called the 'Hand of God', I have seen the way those members practice, all of them are marksmen and fearless warriors, we are not afraid of anyone's threat!" Andy raised his eyebrows, but he didn't expect that New Canaan would also have a big change, the Hand of God?

Isn't this the same group that Prophet Jeremiah formed to attack Jericho's caravan when he was active in the ruins of Salt Lake City?

It seems that he has not forgotten the name and reused it.

"What do you mean... Are you going to go to war with the NcR? But this is completely inconsistent with the teachings of the Post-Holy Church, right? The merchant immediately looked at him with a serious face.

"How not? Isn't helping the weak against evil a practice of justice? We are not afraid of war, the prophet Jeremiah said, the last time New Canaan was destroyed was because we did not dare to face God's test, this is also God's revelation, only take up arms can we better believe in God! Andy opened his mouth, feeling speechless again, although this man did not look like an old member of New Canaan, as a new convert, he had a fanaticism that the old members did not have, the prophet Jeremiah had experienced the destruction of New Canaan last time, and his mind had completed its metamorphosis, and so did the New Canaanites who followed him, and it was a good thing for them to survive in the cruel wasteland in the future, but...

“NcR... It's not the NcR of the past, you probably don't know it yet." Andy talks to the merchant about the NcR's eastward expansion again, and the merchant seems a little surprised and hesitant, the Jerichos were NcR refugees who had migrated from New California during the Iron Plague, and this background made them disgusted with the weakness and independence of the NcR, and on the other hand, they deeply understood the energy of the NcR, a huge state machine, and feared the power of the NcR when it began to function.

Although this psychology is contradictory, it is also very real.

"That's it, now the NcR's troops in the east are no longer comparable to the one that could only be compared to the Hoover Dam period, once the news of the fire extinguishing of Burnham Springs comes out, in order to obtain coal and control trade, this place will definitely become their target again, and it will not only be those scarce soldiers over there who will come at that time, New Canaan has just been rebuilt and has not yet recovered, how can it start a war with NcR?" Andy persuaded him bitterly, and the merchant was visibly worried, but suddenly he became fearless again as if he had found some psychological support.

"I said we're not afraid! This one... Well... Anyway, God said, I didn't come to heaven... Heaven..."A clear female voice suddenly sounded.

"You're wrong, it's on the ground!" Hearing this familiar voice, Andy immediately turned his head to look, and sure enough, it was Alexandra, followed by a group of heavily armed New Canaanites.

"Do not think that I have come, for I may bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace to the earth, but to bring the sword to the earth. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man's enemy is a man in his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever loves his children more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. She recited the verse aloud as she walked, and the content sounded cruel and incomprehensible.

On the other side, Major Fleming was talking to Chriss, who told him that the brigadier had left Hoover Dam for the west, much to his death.

"What? He's leaving? He threw me out like garbage, and at the end of the day, he didn't care what I was doing, damn it. As he spoke, some of the soldiers began to raise their voices to alert Major Fleming.

"Sir!" They quickly took their weapons and entered the bunker, and Major Fleming glanced back and immediately took out the binoculars after hiding in the bunker vigilantly, and the high-quality equipment of the New Canaanites immediately caught his eye.

Chrissy watched Andy chatting with the leading blonde handsome girl, and suddenly her face showed a little unhappiness.

"What's going on with this guy? Why do you have his acquaintances everywhere? "However, the atmosphere on Andy's side was not so friendly.

"Alexandra... So, you are now the one in charge of the hand of God? Her blue eyes stared straight at Andy.

"Yes, Jeremiah's painstaking persuasion made me finally agree to accept this errand, but it was only temporary, and when New Canaan was restored, I would leave, and I had broken my vow, and now I am only making amends." Andy couldn't help but shake his head as he looked at the members of the Hand of God.

"I've said it before, and I'm still going to say it, you shouldn't start a war with NcR, I don't understand the long and difficult sentences you hang, but at least you should calculate the gains and losses before making a decision." Alexandra smiled, and spat out a long list of strange words again, as if with a kind of malice.

"Which of you wants to build a building, and if he doesn't first sit down and calculate the cost, will he be able to build it?" lest when he has laid the foundation, and he will not succeed, and all who see it will laugh at him, saying, "This man has started the work, but he cannot finish it." Or if a king goes out to war with another king, will he not first sit down and consider whether he can go against him with 10,000 troops and bring 20,000 troops against him? But if not, send messengers to ask for terms of peace while the enemy is still far away. So whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple. Salt is good. If the salt loses its taste, what can he call it salty again? Either they were used in the field or heaped in dung, but they were not in their proper form, so they had to be thrown outside. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Andy looked at her helplessly, New Canaan's assimilation ability is really terrifying, Alexandra is such a person, how can she turn back into such a riddler in such a short time, and what she says is more difficult to understand than the words of the tribesmen of the crypto tribe.

"You... Can you say it in words I can understand. Alexandra finally couldn't help but laugh out loud, and it took a moment before she relented, although it seemed a little offensive, but Andy was amazed by her smile, it seems that she is really happy now, has she ever laughed like this in the past?

"The road is not accessible to everyone, and the price is not enough to pay a little, and our people have already reciprocated the movement of NcR. In the wasteland, the most well-informed people are merchants, and the most determined people are believers, and we know the risks of doing so, but even if we don't, the NcR won't do good with us, so why don't we do it? NcR and Caesar's Legion are actually no different. Now, they need a reason to stop, not a reason to take a step. With that, she suddenly turned around and raised her gun, and shot down the NcR flag in the camp, and Major Fleming was furious, but as soon as he drew his pistol and stood up, bullets flew in, knocking his pistol and helmet to the ground, and he fell backwards with his mouth wide open.

Alexandra slowly lowered the shotgun in her hand, and this wave of accurate fire directly shocked several soldiers under Major Fleming, who hid behind cover and did not dare to probe.

"Peace is not always the best option, and now we have realized that." Note 1: Excerpt from Matthew 10:34 Note 2: Excerpt from Luke 14:28
