Chapter XXXVII
The Atomic Hummer headed south and left Dog City. The road from Dog City south to the new mS area is not too peaceful, to be precise, it is very troublesome.
A group of tribesmen with unknown natural paint, possibly some kind of rock powder, and blue stripes all over their bodies, suddenly appeared, shouting and shooting bows and arrows at Andy, and there were also tribesman warriors who ran up and threw them with spears in hand, as if they thought that the atomic Hummer was a rare monster with hunting value, so a large group of tribesmen rushed to try to kill the 'beast'.
None of the people in the car wanted to deal with them, not even Alexandra and Chrissy.
It's not that they're not enthusiastic, it's that it happens too often. It's so frequent that everyone is numb.
"No wonder our caravans never dared to go deep into the east, only caravans of the Buraku could pass through this area." Chrissy glanced at the 'wildlings' with some annoyance on her face.
"How many times has this been? Why did humans become like that? Alexandra was closing her eyes.
"If it weren't for the protection of the Vault, everyone would be like that...", Tank Brain retorted, turning his head.
"How many people can you expect Vault Tech to save with some Vault? Most of the survivors of the Great War did not qualify for the Vault in the first place, but they survived into the aftermath of the war. Alexandra opened her eyes and looked at him, then closed them again.
"It's no better than New California." Andy staggered away from the crazy guys, and the rocks they threw were still a bit threatening, though not too big.
"I've heard that the desert to the west has a large number of descendants of pre-war survivors who did not enter the shelter and continued until the post-war period... It is said that a man named Mr. House did something. When he heard this, he suddenly came to his senses.
"Robert House in Las Vegas? Did that guy survive? Ha, I really don't wonder at all, that kind of spendthrift always gets the best resources, when I was working at the big dome, I heard that he ordered some military-grade anti-missile software, hey, don't mention the price, the average person can't buy it with money. The other three were very interested in this big man before the war, and they pouted to say more.
He cleared his throat proudly.
"Ahem... So you offspring should ask me more for advice, that Robert House is worth a lot of money, his father runs a hardware company, probably influenced by his father, this little House also likes to tinker with machinery since he was a child, and after graduating from college, he opened a technology company called Rocco Industries... All the pre-war ruins you see now have his products, terminals, gadgets, robots, software systems, turrets, even detergents and so on... In short, he was definitely the most well-known capital tycoon in the pre-war world..."...................... Passing by the valley of Mesa Verde, Andy hesitated for a moment whether to go to the crypto tribe to find the battery, but it was really not worth the detour just to find him alone, in order to save time Andy decided to go to the reservation as soon as possible, according to the information provided by Diana, the reservation as a pre-war Los Alamos military base should have hidden two codes that were crucial to the Hermes rocket, namely the code that can open the fixing clip and the code of the security system inside the rocket.
It took some time, and the atomic Humvee was about to approach the radiation zone. Andy hesitated but stopped the car.
"The place we are going to next has a very strong radiation pollution, and if you don't wear protective clothing, you can't enter it at all, I can wear power armor to go in, so that there will be a set of radiation protection clothing free, the tank brain is a robot that doesn't need to wear this, you two... There may be one person who needs to stay. Turning his head and about to have a seizure, Alexandra interrupted his attempt.
"Actually, it's not necessary, I'm carrying a set, it's in my backpack, and yours can be worn by Chrissy." Chrissy twitched the corners of her mouth.
"Hey, that guy's clothes, don't say they don't fit, have they been washed!" An awkward atmosphere swirled around the car.
Andy couldn't help but cough.
"Not all places have an unlimited supply of clean water like the Hoover Dam... In many places, clean water is worth the hard currency of bottle caps... Well, Chrissy, you might as well stay in the car for now, lest some strange guy come and steal the car. So Andy put on the power armor and the tank brain, and entered the radiation zone with Alexandra wearing a radiation suit.
The usual slave traders of the past are now gone, and the reservation does look like it has completely abolished slavery, as Colonel Green promised, much to Andy's relief.
"Los Alamos ended up like this... It's really—" The tank brain spun its tracks forward, and a muttering sound came from the electronic speakers.
"What a joy!" Alexandra laughed in her mask.
"I thought you were going to make some sad remarks." Tankbrain stared at the walls of the reservation, as if searching for something he was familiar with.
"Sadness? No, who's to say that this is the place where the nuclear bomb was invented in the first place? Oppenheimer could only have thought that this was some form of art. Anyway, there were some guys I hated in this place—" By the time they reached the grounds of the reservation, several of the guards had already set up their guns on them.
"Slippery." A ghoul in military uniform said unceremoniously.
"What are you doing here?" Andy stepped forward, which made the ghouls nervous.
"I'm Andy, and I'm here to talk to Colonel Green about something." The ghouls asked suspiciously.
"Andy? We do know a guy named Andy, but how can we be sure you're really him if you don't show your face? If you have bad intentions, you have to weigh it in advance. Andy couldn't help but shake his head, the ghoul didn't care, how could he 'show his face' in such a radiant place, if he showed his face in a few days, he wouldn't have to ask for it.
"It's really me, if you don't believe me, you let me go into a place with low radiation, and I'll prove it to you... Or do I remember when we were in the same league as William Clark's territory, where I shot him with my own hands, and no one else knew about it, right? The ghouls hesitated for a moment, and finally sent one to report to Colonel Green.
A moment later, the door opened.
"Come in, but don't run around, Colonel Green has an order, there are many new military administrative zones inside the reservation, and no one except members of the Green Guard is allowed to approach, and you are no exception." Andy was puzzled to hear this new situation, and the three of them, followed by two ghoul guards with guns, walked into Los Alamos.
As soon as he entered, he saw that the reservation had undergone a lot of different changes, and the trade area had been reduced a lot, which was understandable, after all, the area under Horatio's management would lose its meaning when the slave trade was no longer in place, and the large tents that were originally used to store and transport slaves were used for other purposes.
But.... Andy saw that there were a lot of shooting ranges and training ranges, and some ghouls who looked like civilians were doing push-ups with reluctant faces under the supervision of instructors in military uniforms.
"Hurry up, a hundred more!" The instructor shouted hoarsely, and a voice suddenly sounded from among the ghouls who were struggling to obey orders.
"I can't stand it anymore! Whoever loves to do push-ups will do it, I won't do it! The instructor strode over at once, his baton geaming.
"What do you say? You dare to say it again! The person who spoke was quickly moved out of the way by the others, and Andy looked over to see that it was Florence, the short ghoul old lady sitting on the ground with an angry face.
"I said, whoever likes to do it, the old lady will not serve!" The ghoul instructor's boots stepped on Florence's side, lowered his head to meet her eyes, and spoke hoarsely and rudely.
"Colonel Green's order that those of you who have been in the habit of obedience and have not been properly capable of fighting must be reformed by military training! Everyone on the reserve must take responsibility for protecting our homeland, and this is the duty of those of you who have been protected but have not contributed enough. Stand up, do push-ups, Florence, even you can't run away! Florence folded her arms and still refused to stand up.
"I don't! That kid didn't say that he would become like this after he seized power, so I didn't want to be a soldier in his big barracks! The ghoul instructor's eyes changed, and he raised the baton in his hand high.
"Hey!" Andy couldn't stand it and shouted, causing the ghoul instructor to look at it for a moment.
The ghoul soldiers, who had been following a few people all the time, issued a serious warning to Andy.
"It's not your business, hurry up and see Colonel Green." Andy ignored him and just spoke to the ghoul instructor who was going to do it.
"She's just an old lady, why do you treat her like that?" The instructor straightened up and turned to look, his eyelids missing looking Andy's power armor up and down.
"For no reason, it was Colonel Green's order, physical strength brought mental fortitude, discipline brought loyalty to the soul. For too long, William Clark's policies corrupted the minds of the people of the reservation, which is why he ended up failing, and we don't do the same. ”
"You're a slippery skin, don't be nosy, I tell you, I know you slippery skin hates us, that's why we must always be vigilant, if we don't prepare early, sooner or later you will be driven by greed to attack us, don't think we'll be naïve about it!" Andy shook his head, not knowing what to say, maybe he was really inappropriate as an outsider to talk nonsense, but he subconsciously felt that it was a little inappropriate to force a centuries-old lady who had at least contributed to the reservation to do push-ups, and even more inappropriate to raise a stick and threaten her when she refused.
"Hurry up, slippery! No more fucking wasted time! The ghoul guards around him warned him again, and if it weren't for Andy's lack of approaching in power armor, they might have made more drastic moves to urge him.
Tank Brain looked at the ghoul soldiers, and seemed to dislike them.
"It's a familiar feeling, Uncle Sam's boys are still the same." Alexandra, for her part, remained silent.
Andy took one last look at Florence and left with the two ghoul soldiers. Entering the inner city of the reservation, he saw more places being enclosed with steel plates and the like, such as the hangars and airports of the former reservations.
The former shanty town has also been turned into a training ground, and some ghoul soldiers are practicing target shooting.
"Where does Colonel Green live now?" Andy asked this question, thinking that Colonel Green was already living in an underground bunker.
"It's still in the old place." The soldier who led the way gave an answer that surprised him.
"Who's living in the bunker?" The soldier who led the way glanced back at him impatiently.
"Only Level 1 is still open, those nerds are there to make medicines, Level 2 and Level 3 are closed now, no one can enter without Colonel Green's permission, as for who is there now, it's a military secret, don't ask questions you shouldn't ask! Don't try to go where you shouldn't! Andy stared at the backs of the two ghoul soldiers, but he didn't expect the atmosphere to become like this after Colonel Green took the throne, and it was estimated that when William Clark returned to the reservation with new members, Colonel Green's abdication was not as generous as he said, but probably in the years when he presided over the reservation, he adhered to the militarized management strategy of the SA army before the war as he is now, and did not get any recognition and support from other ghouls.
Walk into the shantytowns that have been turned into military barracks, where the tents are still there. There was some music in the largest tent, and the ghouls who had brought him in went up to talk to the soldiers guarding the door, and a moment later a ghoul walked into the tent and walked in, waving at Andy.
"You come in alone." Andy and his two teammates nodded and walked in, listening to the music and suddenly realizing that he knew what song it was.
"Hey, what the hell, this bastard in this tent has a lot of taste." A ghoul soldier sternly struck the barrel of the tank with the butt of his gun.
"The next time you robot speak, I'll treat you as Colonel Quagrin." Turning his head to look at the 7.62 caliber automatic rifle that could blow his brain container, he wisely chose not to be silent.
................. Andy walked into the tent and saw Colonel Green lying on a comfortable recliner with music playing on the radio, cigars and coffee and some cans of military ration piled up on the table, two female ghouls in three-point underwear dancing to the rhythm of the music, and various weapons in the display case next to it.
Seeing Andy in power armor come in, he sat up and waved his hand, and the two female ghouls immediately stood aside.
The green-skinned skeletal veteran stood up in a recliner wearing a pair of sunglasses, a cigar in his mouth, and wearing the pre-war SA officer uniform that was almost in rags.
"I heard them say you're wearing a set of power armor, I thought it was a rusty T-45 or a T-51 that was first commissioned during the Battle of Anchorage, but I didn't think you did it, I didn't even see it... In general a little bit of the T-60, but very different in details, where did you get it? Andy stood still in front of him, not wanting to talk about these superfluous topics.
"From a very distant place, I came here to ask you for two things." Colonel Green lit a cigar and held it in his mouth.
"Not many days after you left, you came back and reached out to me... Well, for the sake of you helping me, tell me what you want... Bottle cap? Ammunition? Drugs? I can give you some for free, or give you a discounted price. Andy swallowed the comments in his heart and said directly the two codes he wanted.
Major Green shook the cigar on the ashtray on the table, and spat out white smoke from his mouth.
"Huh? Hermes rockets? What's that? .... I guess it was an engineering project that William Clark was involved in before, but I don't know that. Andy sighed and solemnly explained how dangerous what he was doing right now.
"We searched William Clark's terminal before and it didn't have what I was looking for, these... You should know. Colonel Green was silent for a while.
“.m.b... Didn't that crazy thing fall... But does that make a difference for us? Even if some slippery country to the west was bombed, so what? Maybe that's a good thing for us, as I said, the reservation is now not to infringe on others and not to be violated by others, and we don't have to pay anything for it. Andy was a little annoyed with Colonel Green's attitude, but he held back.
"You should beware of Caesar's legions, if you can help us, we can help you, and... Are you sure you need to reassure a mad scientist to press the nuclear weapons button? What if he slipped his hand and put the reservation on the crosshair? Will it be able to withstand a second bombardment? Colonel Green put the cigar on the table.
"We don't need anyone's help... Especially with the help of slippery skins, our relationship with other slippery settlements is only at the level of transactions... But you're right, the button for nuclear weapons isn't for everyone to press, an egg-headed nerd? Hmph, that unreliable guy can do what you say, okay, I think—" He looked left and right, pulled out a large pile of crumpled yellow magazines from under the table, and finally pulled out a small notebook.
After opening the small notebook, Andy saw that the inside of the notebook had been hollowed out for storage, and a delicate black holographic cartridge was placed inside.
Colonel Green withheld it and handed it to Andy.
"You take it, those people came to tell me what kind of 'ticket' it was, but before it was time to get on the boat, the bomb fell, hum... A bunch of grinding waste, and the Secret Service. Andy took it and looked at it, and found that the black holographic cartridge was printed on the shell with a white five-pointed star in a ring, surrounded by an 'E' in the middle.
"Colonel Green, were you a member of the enclave in the past?" The old ghoul lay back in his chair.
"It's just a name... Okay, I don't have anything else, I don't know where the other code you said is, no, you can go and search in Clark's temple, don't bother me anymore. ”
